BURRITAS!!! I am craving the spicy sauce they put on these things. So flavorful, just the right amount of kick and the service is fantastic.
Our server/owner (i think) broke it down for us about the history.
The horchata is smooth, not gritty, and if you add the strawberries it's refreshing.
Papusa's were good, but I wish I didn't eat them AFTER the burrita because the burrita was so good I was full (insert sad face here)
They take VISA, which is always a plus. -

I can only vouch for the torta ahogada, but it was a memorable food-assault. Imagine your typical bollio roll crammed with pig bits, avocado, queso fresco, and sour cream. Sturdy. Filling. Unremarkable. To make it remarkable, suffocate it in a pond of burning orangeness. This is definitely a chunky, arbol-based sauce, not a smooth rojo made from pureed guajillos, and it will harm the weak accordingly. The spiciness builds slowly and tenaciously but, while it offers a fight, it doesn't detract from the pleasant and complex flavor.
If you're not a fan of spicy, avoid the torta ahogada. In fact, you could probably avoid the tortas entirely--without the sauce, the sandwich was merely average. But if you don't mind the hiccups and a warm, tingling sensation in your stomach, it is definitely worth a try. That said, make sure to have a glass of the canela-rich horchata on hand to extinguish any fires. -

Overall I thought this place was pretty good:
Taquitos - these were served in a way I had never had before - topped with a couple of ingredients of your choosing and topped with crema.
Platanos - these were alright - a little on the dry side so I didn't enjoy them as much as I normally would.
Pupusas - very good...tasty and filled with enough flavor from the beans and cheese to complement the subtle flavors of the corn dough.
Fajitas with homemade tortillas - fantastic...very authentic corn tortillas tasted so fresh and homemade...I could eat an eternity of these things!
I'd go back and try a few of the other items on the menu, but would definitely order the tortillas again. -

Omg!!! My fave dish thier Agua De Chile is sooooo bomb!!! Its Ceviche, in green salsa and lots of lemon and cucumber and some onion! Very Delish!! I come very often just to get that! Leaves my mouth watering and very spiced up at the end but always keeps you wanting more even though its spicy and might be too much to handle lol. LOve Et!!!

Spanish Karaoke on a Friday night! It was fun to watch the performances in Spanish. If you go for Karaoke, be sure to tell the KJ you want Spanish or you will be racially profiled and given the lyrics in English.
Sigh...This was my worst meal the entire 12 days I spent in SF/Oakland. We stumbled in here due to a cab drivers mistake with tummies rumbling and full of only martinis... not hard people to please. I will eat almost anything after happy hour if I don't plan ahead with a good reservation.
My dear friend had the Diablo de Camarón (which he orders every time he sees it on a menu). He wouldn't even finish it. The shrimp were not of the quality you would expect being to near a coast line and the spices were too much. I tried some and it was that kind of hot that is just a waste of the food. WE LOVE SPICY FOOD. 'Inedible' is what he called it. I'm not sure what my other friend ordered but a double thumbs down was his answer to my inquiry.
Our waiter was adorable and very kind. I was so taken by him I just asked him to bring me whatever his favorite dish is. Ha! I have no idea what it was. It had what seems to be a bottom layer of pre-made taquitos, a layer of lettuce, a layer of sliced cheese (yes, sliced), a layer of sliced tomatoes. more lettuce, all smothered in a cream sauce. I still have no idea what it was and didn't want to hurt his feelings. -

It wasn't all that. The menu is incredibly confusing, so I asked the waiter to help me out. He asked if I like tacos and I said heck yes. He brought out a heaping plate of stuff and below it were five rolled tacos, thin-stylee. I start whacking it back and I didn't know what the hell I was eating. Then something chewy was stuck in my mouth. I was chewing away and it wasn't getting any smaller... then I remembered I saw pig ears on the menu. I figured that was what I was chewing. Thingswent down hill shortly thereafter.

Four of us zoomed in for a quick lunch after doing the tour at Anchor Steam (a MUST do if you enjoy beer).
The guacamole starter was excellent! Freshly made. Chunky. Rich and creamy. My only complaint is that there wasn't more. Order two ... you'll need it. We went for some paposas too. The loroco and the house. WOW. Very filling.
I had the torta ahogada: Pork, avocado and white cheese. The sauce is excellent but oddly enough not the burn I had expected. My lunchmate had the same sandwich dry and seemed to be enjoying it more with sauce on the side.
Last gang members had the fajita platters; beef and chicken. Very generous. I took the remnants home and had them for lunch with the extra tortillas (home made of course) they gave us. Throw those bad boys in the toaster and you're cruising.
Excellent horchata and a decent selection of beers. I was told that Wednesday was karaoke night but that would have taken a LOT more drinking. Very nice people. -

Gerberas are for displaying. Lorocos are for eating.
This native Salvadorean vegetable makes Yaquis' scrambled eggs unique. Similar in taste and texture to an artichoke, they gave an authentic twist to what otherwise would have been a standard dish.
Beans only come refried. Tortillas only come corn or rice flour. Egg whites are not an option. All A-OK when being introduced to a taste from someone's home.1 Previous Review: Show all »

In a nutshell, the waiter was mad at me because he got my order wrong, the menu is incomprehensible unless you are fluent in spanish and an avid spanish dish connoisseur. Also everyone stares at you while you eat... weird. Advice: buy from the taco trucks!

This place is amazing. I haven't tried one thing I don't like off their menu yet. I work on the same street and can assure all you yelpers THE FOOD IS ALL FRESH which just makes me want to support them even more. I see the load of food delivered every morning and am happy to know I'm eating the freshest food when I'm eating at los yaquis.
Of course like every one has mentioned, the two guys that run the place are seriously some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. I hate when you eat good but the service is so bad you never want to come back; so definitely give them props for always making a great atmosphere. You can tell they love what they do. -

Great Food and Nice decor.
As you walk in to Los Yaquis, you will be surprised to find a nice decor, and very welcoming staff, who will make sure you have a great experience while you are there.
The taquitos are like you had never seen before, they are a whole meal with many toppings like cheese, avocado, nopales, cueritos, carrots, and anything else you ask for...
I was surprised to see "Tortas Ahogadas" in their menu, they are hard to find here in the U.S. These tortas are dipped in hot sauce and are delicious but very hot, so make sure you get a cold beer afterwards!
Try the flan, it is amazing! It had great flavor and texture.
There is also karaoke every friday night. -

Okay, trust me, order the fajitas, the nice lady owner even let me get half steak/half chicken, so yeah, go for it...homemade tortillas are amazing..Ask for a little crema on the side. Enough for two HEARTY portions even if you want to split, BUT if you split - treat yourself to the plantains side order. (I sorta split it with my bf and when we were ready to pack our leftovers, they gave me FRESH new tortillas) YUP, that was a sweet deal.
Now I didn't try this, but the next table had one of those Beer and Tomato juice cocktails -- what made it look super amazing -- and what made me want one so bad was the presentation...There was an incredible looking rimmer of seasoned of rock salt and spices.
Here are my only criticisms - I was wearing shorts and my legs kept touching chewing gum under the tables (so wear pants!) AND really what jerks think that the proper place for used chewing gum is under some nice restaurant's table??? Is it so hard to place it in a napkin (already provided on the table?). The only other negative was that in the bathroom they had the motion sensor paper towel dispenser (My FAV) BUT it was outta towels...boooo.
LOVE THIS PLACE. -

A friend and I walked into Los Yaquis prior to an "event" at The Armory nearby. I ordered "The Special:" five taquitos covered in shredded cabbage, tomatoes, cactus, carrots, quail eggs, jalapenos, pig skin, pig ear, head cheese and more. It was glorious! The [Chilean] chardonnay probably could have come from a better source, but it was drinkable. I later enjoyed one of the the three lollipops that came with the check at home alone in the bath. They aren't afraid to take risks at this restaurant.

Their claim of authentic Jaliscan food drew me in. My family is from Jalisco so I was aware the dishes were going to be a little dfferent. So I was expecting to see enchiladas like my abuelita used to make. What I got was waaaay off. Am I missing something?
First of all, their enchiladas are all filled with nothing but cheese with the meat served on the side. So my husband's steak enchiladas were basically cheese enchiladas with a side of grilled skirt steak. WTF? I just don't get it. Maybe they make things differently in San Juan de Los Lagos, where the owners are from. In any case, I was disappointed.
I was also pissed off that I ordered chicken fajitas which were supposed to come with rice, beans AND salad, but they only brought out the fajitas and nothing else. When I reminded the server about the side dishes, she said salad was not included even though the menu said so. Considering I'm on Atkins, I couldn't even eat the rice and beans. So I was really looking forward to the salad. I was extra annoyed at that point. Why include something on your menu if you're not going to honor it?
Bottom line: The food is decent, but here were too many "misses" for me to come back. Unless it was for a Michelada to cure a Sunday morning hangover ;) -
Review from Bill B.
My friend called the fajita chicken "the best I've ever had", and after stealing a bite, I agree. Tacos (5, taquito style) come under a mountain of toppings - choose either 2 for $7 or the special of all for $9. Choose among: pork, ham, cheese, cactus, pig skin, pig ear, and headcheese. The horchata is like a liquid stick of Big Red gum and perfectly smooth. Also be sure to try the Dulce de leche cookies for dessert!
Decor is nice for a taqueria and very clean, and the service was quick and very friendly. I'm surprised this Jalisco-style, family-owned and -operated, Mexican and Salvadorean restaurant hasn't exploded on Yelp yet - only 4 blocks from 16th/Mission BART, it's a winner! -

So much food for an order! Today, for lunch, I ordered the fried taquitos with a plate of the following items that I chose: pigs' ears, pork loin and avocado. (Other items I did not choose includes head cheese and pig skin. Another time.) The dish also comes with tomatoes, lettuce, jalapeno and this great creamy sauce. While I was waiting for my food, I was watching the chef prepare different dishes and salivating at how nicely each ingredient is being handled and put together. When I took my food back to the office, everyone was intrigued with what I was having and after offering them a taste, they were all fighting for the to-go menu that I brought back.
I also bought one of their gelatin edible art that looks like a paperweight. I've never seen anything like it before and it even taste good, though we hesitated eating it because it is so beautiful. However, in the end, gluttony prevailed! -

Solid little joint if you know how to order. I didn't know how and I didn't pay attention to the pix on yelp so with this in mind ORDER THE SOUR CREAM ON THE SIDE. They crema the whole plate. This was the only downside to this meal. Change it and I'll give you 5 stars.
I order the fried tacos, "tacos dorado" , 5 to a plate... 6 inches long diameter of a dime and YUMMY. I ordered the ham, avo and queso blanco as a topping. Fresh iceberg lettuce, fresh tomatoes rounded out the plate. BUT it was all buried under the crema. Bummer on that note.
All in all a satisfying dish once I added the house hot sauce.
The hot sauce is worth mentioning as a serious condiment.
The horchata was smooth with great depth, best I've had in a long while.
Really nice people inside.
I'll be back. -

My last review was unfair. I really only talked about their one cocktail. I will now mention the food.
+1 star for their homemade tortillas
+1 star for the quail eggs
+1 star for the yucca with chicharron. TRY AS APPETIZER
+1 star for having their pupusas
+1 star for all their Salvadorean breakfast. Man, it's just like I remember as a kid. Casamineto with your choice of eggs, cotija cheese, re-fried beans, fried plantains, crema and homemade tortillas.

San Francisco, CA
I went the first time because of my coworkers. I was surprise when I saw in the menu a different variety of choices from the ones we usually see in a mexican restaurant.
Flavor and quality of the food are high standard, one can see that the ingredients are fresh and very good quality. I really enjoyed the chicken with enchiladas. The best part is everything has that homemade flavor hard to find. The owner, who is the same cook, prepares the menu and all the ingredients for the food.
Size of the dishes is medium, not too much that you are gonna leave some food behind or too little that you have to order more.
The environment in the place invites to sit down and enjoy a glass of wine or a cold beer, perfect to go by yourself, with a date or four more people.
If you go, you are really going to like it and you have to come back and try the whole menu, so better start now before it changes. -
Review from Joanna M.
America's next top tostada can be found right here at Los Yaquis.
Walking into Los Yaquis, I was warmly greeted by the chef and the sole waitress, and settled into a warm seat on a cold night. She brought over the menu, and explained what was what. They are from Jalisco and import some Jaliscan ingredients such as the delicious queso blanco and the headcheese (queso de puerco) but there is also Salvadorean food and traditional Mexican dishes. They're striving to differentiate themselves from the run of the mill local taquerias by serving botanas (Jaliscan snacks) such as picked pork skin, pickled cacti, etc.
So after the grand tour of the menu, I chose three tostadas, one with lomo (pork loin), one with the queso blanco, and one with the queso de puerco. Each was great, but that queso blanco is phenomenal. It's kind of a cross between mozzarella and ricotta, with maybe a curd of cottage cheese thrown in, and with a taste of citrus. How it's shipped here, I'm not sure. Maybe angels fly it in. As I said, each tostada was tasty, though they come smothered in accompaniments like crema, cabbage, tomato, which kind of obscures some of the unique tastes. Next time, I will ask them to go light on that stuff, or put it on the side.
They offer an alfalfa drink that some yelpers have tried and photographed, but it was not in season when I went last month, but now that it's almost spring it might be available (or soon to be.) My second choice, an ice cold Negra Modelo, hit the spot, though I'm still very curious about the alfalfa beverage.
I got the run-down on the small town that the family is from: San Juan de los Lagos in Jalisco. It's famous for it's statue of the Virgin Mary, and the site of one of the largest pilgrimages in Mexico, as the statue has been reputed to cure ailments and make miracles happen. When you walk into Los Yaquis there is a beautiful shrine to your left, and the hostess will be more than happy to tell you all about it.
Definitely the most hospitable place I've encountered lately, with fantastic food to boot. -

YES!
My friend, the Danktress of SF, who scouts super cheap and delicious holes in the wall of the city, brought me here.
Very generous with proportions and ridiculously inexpensive. $2 papusas, $7.75 for a two-papusa plate with seasoned white rice and refried beans. Papusas of course come with marinated cabbage slaw and mild tomato salsa. The "side order" of guac is a heaping bowl of rich, delicious guacamole that comes with taquitos and tortilla chips. There is a whole lot else on the menu aside from papusas, but I can't really speak on all of that other than I appreciate the variety offered. Horchata was the best I've ever had-- thicker than usual and with a lot of clove. Food was hot, service was fast and friendly.
So, so comforting! -

THIS PLACE IS AWESOME!!!
This is such a refreshing change of pace from the normal Mexican fare, they have a great menu and offer a nice variety of stuff that you really won't find anywhere else around here. The people who work here are very friendly and polite and you can tell they want to please you. You can ask them just about anything on the menu or to suggest an item and they will happily work with you. If you tell them it's your first time there, they will usually give you a small discount, too.
The five mini "tacos" plate is very good, but can be confusing at first. It is 5 taquitos (I think with chicken) covered with 5 items that you select. You are not selecting the filling, but the toppings. I like the tomatoes, nopales (cactus), cueritos (pig skin), queso fresca, and the ham. It comes to your table looking like a giant mess, covered in sour cream and salsa and all those toppings, and it is delicious and I almost guarantee that you've never had anything like it.
The nachos are also very good, and come sprinkled with fresh Mexican cheese.
I also LOVE the tamale de elote, which is basically a tamale without any filling, but the corn is VERY light and airy and fluffy, and it is kind of sweet. I don't use the sour cream that comes with it, because it is kind of sweet so I eat it after the other food as kind of a dessert. Also, they have a great beer selection.
Trust me and just eat here once and check it out, at the very least you will experience something different that goes beyond normal Mexican restaurants and hopefully you find something you will like. Try something besides just a burrito or tacos or something, because there are SO many other places around for that stuff!!!
The HORCHATA is DELICIOUS!!! Lots and lots of cinnamon.
The strawberry water is the BEST I've ever had.
BUT WAIT! YOU CAN GET THEM BOTH MIXED TOGETHER!!!
OMG THIS IS THE BEST DRINK EVER MADE!!!
You must come try this place, at least for the drinks. TRUST ME! -

The minute I walked in, I had a feeling this would be my new hole-in-the-wall Mexican place. It was a mixed crowd - a group of guys talking loudly in Spanish and drinking rounds of Michaladas while a lonesome old guy enjoyed his sopa.
Did the food match the atmosphere? Absolutely.
They carry an extensive menu, but the waitress was patient with us and kindly gave her perspective on it. I got the tacos especiale plus mini ham and cheese quesadillas all topped with lomo, napoles and oreja (pork loin, cactus and pig's ears) while my friend got the bistec ranchero. Both dishes hit the comfort food spot and surprisingly, I wasn't busting out of my seams after eating it like most of my Mexican restaurant adventures.
It was a great experience that went above and beyond my expectations for a cheap Mexican place, but I just have one quibble - please put some heat in there! My friend and I were freezing. We were both tempted to buy some coats from some random guy who walked in and tried to sell them. Do you have a special deal with him? (insert conspiracy theory) Maybe I'll just get the sopa the next time it's cold.
P.S. We stereotyped the place by asking for chips, which the waitress responded with, "We don't have chips, but I can bring you a little something." That little something was a taco topped with a fresh cabbage, tomatoes and authentic sour cream straight from Mexico - a far superior substitute for chips and salsa. -

A friend of mine recommended this restaurant pointing that they had the best Jaliscos food, and guess what, he was right!!!!!
The sour cream was the a BLAST, because its mexican 100% (brouhgt from San Juan de Los Lagos, Jalisco) so with it all taquitos kept an genuine flavour that places you in the environment of an authentic mexican restaurant: the birria was awesome and the Alfalfa water was even better....yummy!!!1
But its not only about the food what we liked the most, the service was great. Our waiter (Salvador) and his brother were very kindness and were extremely patient by waiting for us to place the order an by asking them lots of questions about the menu hahaha.
Stop by this non expensive and affordable place...YOU WONT REGRET!! -

This place has the best Horchata I've ever had. Not too creamy, not too sweet, and just the right amount of cinnamon.
I had a torta served hot, with hot sauce on the side. The hot sauce was phenomenal but I'd recommend it on the side since it was very spicy and might have overwhelmed my tastebuds if it had been poured over the sandwich.
The papusas were good, as were the sweet corn tamales. The tamales were a little sweet for my taste, so I'm not sure I would get those again.
I loved this place because everyone who took care of us was incredibly nice and there were lots of locals in the restaurant who knew the staff. -

Los Yaquis is situated at an obscure location where the residential neighborhoods start to appear as you go south on S Van Ness Ave after passing Highway 101. I only found out about Los Yaquis due to their Scoutmob deal offering so got a cool 50% our meal which consisted of a variety of pupusas, flan, horchata, and ceviche on crackers. It is said that they have authentic Jaliscan food and I can't speak for how authentic it really is but their pupusas, the reason we came here in the first place, are average at best. Not enough filling as I would like in my pupusas (I got a vegetable pupusa and there were barely bits of veggies mixed with all the cheese). You can taste the bits of cinnamon at the bottom of the horchata and it had just the right amount of smooth sweetness; it doesn't get a whole lot better that here for that at least.

A fantastic yet-to-be-discovered Mission restaurant!
Los Yaquis' wait staff was so helpful in deciding what to order from their mostly Salvadorean menu. They even brought over samples of the tacos and quesadillas so we could see just how different (and yummy) they are.
The tacos are fried and crispy, come with a plate of 5 and made to order (I got vegetarian tacos with cheese) and are what I think of as a taquito, topped with pickled carrots, peppers, nopales, lettuce, cheese, and crema. Deeelicious.
They also had a great tamarind drink, made with freshly mashed tamarind and just the right amount of sweetness.
A wonderful new find for me with none of the wait that you face on a weekend in the Mission. -

I'm not a fan of Mexican food with frills, i.e., Mamacita, etc. Keep it simple and traditional, which is what Los Yaquis does. The food is good, the people are friendly, and if you're lucky, you'll experience Mexican karaoke while you enjoy your food. And if you're in the mood for Salvadorean food, order some pupusas.

The owners are from my hometown, so pardon the bias, but it was great to taste las tortas just as they make them back in San Juan. The beer is plentiful, I had a 40oz Victoria to accompany my torta which was made as if it had been brought from San Juan, and el pan was delicious - definitely recen hecho! I will most certainly be returing in the future - again and again.

Everything we had was great! I had the Sopa de Res. The beef was tender and the broth was super tasty. It was so much I'll be eating leftovers for lunch. Even the side of rice that came with it was perfect. The guacamole app was also awesome. Portions are large and next time I'll split one. The homemade tortillas are awesome! This is my favorite Mexican joint so far and I live in the Mission.

Love the food at this place! Okay the interior is not a 4 star restaurant, but I didn't expect it to be:-) The food was EXCELLENT! I have not had more flavorful food even in an expensive place. If you live or work nearby, I recommend you stopping by to try it out.
The service was even better than the food. I don't know if the guy helping us was the owner or what, but he asked if it was our first time there. When we told him yes, he insisted in bringing us something extra just for us. He brought us some variation of a taquito stuffed with chicken, and cheese. Tasted great. He made sure to tell us he appreciated us coming in and asked us to come back - who does that these days:-)

Thrillist you fail.
I trusted your write ups and raving praise.
New place near my work? Awesome. Delicious Mexican-Salvadorian food? Excellent. I went to check out Los Yaquis that day.
What I'd end up finding was as far as possible from what I had read.
Maybe I couldn't quite decipher how the food is ordered so I'll take the blame for that, but all I knew is that the taco dorados here were supposed to be bomb so I figured I'd go with that. I'm not sure how the accompaniments work so I asked the waitress to just bring me whatever she thought would be good.
First of all, I love mexican and latin food, but I'll admit my tastebuds have probably been limited to a bastardized American version of the cuisine. So I can't say for certain if the food was just way too authentic for me, but I didn't find it very appetizing. It was actually kind of difficult to get through it. The 'super authentic' grilled cheese the waitress raved about was squeaky when I chewed on it. And there were these (not very good) clear cartridge-like things, and maybe it was lost in translation, but I heard either 'pork skin' or 'foreskin'. Dear God I hope it was the first one.
I found the workers to be pretty friendly, even with a confused out-of-place asian guy in their restaurant, but what really turned me off was how they they kept giving me take-out menus and business cards, and wouldn't stop asking me to tell all my co-workers. Normally I'd be more than happy to pass on a good word about a place I enjoy even without being asked to, but come on, at least let me finish my meal before you hand me a stack of advertisements and give me a five minute speech on all your catering and delivery options. -

My boyfriend and I came in for a sunday dinner after the wait at Walzwerk was 45min. The waitress was amazing, so sweet and her recommendations were spot on! The food was so good. We had tacos (amazing) I never had tacos prepared this way before, Tostadas de Camaron (PERFECT) just the way I like them. My boyfriend thought they were had too much lemon/lime on them but other than that it was a nice experience.
