We had an excellent experience here at the restaurant, right from the beginning. The server was amazing, friendly and helpful! No matter what we asked, she tried to accommodate us. In terms of the food, it was quite delicious. I ordered Combo #2 which has very generous portions. The pupusa was quite tasty and the enchiladas were amazing. My friend ordered the paella and it was awesome! Lots of shrimp, chicken and fillers. I also tasted the eggplant lasagna which was quite good. The only food I didn't like were the tacos, which were quite bland overall.
Also, for those liking a little more heat, I would ask for their homemade hot sauce. It was spicy, but still tasty!

Overall it was a great experience and I will definitely return

Finally got to visit this place after years of meaning to but never being able to get around to it.  Service was prompt and friendly and the free chips and salsa were nice touches.  What was a little strange about the chips though was that they were nicely warm on top but once we got to the bottom of the pile, the chips were cold.  I had the chicken flautas as an appetizer and they were fairly mediocre.  Although they tasted freshly cooked, the filling wasn't all that tasty in my opinion. My main however was fantastic (paella).  It was somewhat awkward to eat because they serve it on a narrow sizzler so I had to be careful not to dig in too much or else the food would spill everywhere.  But the rice was perfectly cooked and it had mucho amounts of chicken, chorizo, and seafood (mussels, shrimp, and calamari - all nicely cooked and seasoned).  What was great about the sizzler they served it on was that it kept the food nice and hot.  My sister had combo uno and she raved about both their empanada and the pork and cheese pupusa (she was less fond of the chimichanga though).  All in all, it was a positive meal.  The prices are a touch steep but it's nothing outrageous.  Pretty good overall.

Despite the almost quaint (if not so sparsely decorated) vibrant orange and yellow walls and the very friendly server who we suspect was the owner, the food at Los Comales just wasn't good enough.

My bright green caiparinha arrived in a martini glass with no trace of anything fresh or muddled in it other than the lime wedge garnish. It was also a little bit too sweet, but most importantly, I have definitely had better.

The complimentary basket of tortilla chips and unusually thick salsa appetizer were a great starter since we were starving on this early evening. While the chips were supposedly homemade, they did not taste that way. They tasted more like they had come straight out of a plastic bag than a deep fryer. Nonetheless, we were pretty thankful for them since it took a while for our shared appetizer to arrive. Made with the same heavily and colourfully spiced tortilla chips, the nachos were quite small, but nicely dressed with mozarella, ground beef, tomatoes, and green peppers. The accompanying dips of refried beans, sour cream, and more of that thick salsa were pretty much the highlights of the entire meal.

Longing for something simple, my dinner date ordered the chicken with rice which arrived as a brilliantly yellow, but flavourless pile of rice (which she remedied with a flip of the salt shaker) flecked with frozen peas and chopped vegetables (mostly onions) and sided with slivers of iceberg. To answer her question of "Where's the chicken?", I squinted and pointed to the slightly irregularly chopped whitish cubes and said "there, there, and there".

My equally disappointing cebiche de camarones arrived as a tiny cup of previously frozen scrawny shrimp drowned in onion slivers and chopped tomatoes swimming in a spicy ketchupy sauce. While I'm not denying that it was my fault that I ended up having the same tortilla chips in my entree as the ones in the two previous dishes, this might have occurred to the server while taking my order and it would have been nice if he had pointed this out to me or made a suggestion to substitute them in this final one so that I wouldn't have gone into tortilla overdrive like I did.

Great little place downtown. The service is amazing. Maureen the server is a gem. The karaoke is incredible--their in-house singer El Cantare has a real set of pipes. When I went in with my boyfriend, a charming family next to us kept singing and they were brilliant. The food is delicious. Thanks for a great night!

Meet the Business Owner: Ana R.

Ana immigrated from Central America.  She started out at the Hilton, knowing very little English after six months of schooling.  Fortunately, the chef at the Hilton was very kind, and taught her well as Ana's English improved.  She was the only "non-Canadian" on staff at the time.

She eventually became a chef at Aroma Restaurant, specializing in desserts, before finally fulfilling her dream of opening her own restaurant,

Los Comales.  Ana is proud of her food, and puts enormous effort into it.  Her background at Aroma and the Hilton are clearly visible in her dishes, especially the desserts.  She also mixes her own drinks from scratch, such as making her own mint syrup for mojitos.
