I've only flown here once, from LA back to San Jose. My gosh I was dropped off at the wrong terminal(terminal 1, when my terminal was really 7). Holy crap it was a long walk to the other side!

Well going through check in and security check went fairly smooth. But when I got to the US Airway terminal it went to hell! Couldn't understand the lady on the intercom, she had an accent, was talking to fast, and sounded like she was yelling. She took forever to board the first three groups(which were like business and first class). Then told every other group to line up altogether because our flight was about to depart! So everyone was rushing through!

Then on our flight, 15 minutes away from arriving to SFO, a passenger fainted. She was ok though, ha it was a crazy flight/trip!

Its one of the worst airports in USA, and unfortunately its one of the busiest airport in the West America too.

The airport is always under construction.  Land / Air traffic is always a mess.  Seems like officials here can't even get a simple things right.

    1. Not enough immigration officers.

    2. Outdated Technology - people are too cheap to offer free wifi at terminals.

    3. Not all terminals are connected.  Means if you want to connect, you have to re clear the security again and again.  (Terminal 5-6-7 are interconnected, com'on American & Delta!)

    4. Most terminals are dirty, and offers expensive food options and you have no where to go around with it.

    5. Dirty bathrooms.

    6. Public transportation options to/from LAX is nearby non existent.

I avoid LAX as much as I can unless I am flying out internationally.

I can remember when most of these terminals were built; and many of them appear to have not received a coat of paint or new carpet since then. Hint: at that time, most, if not all airlines flew prop planes. Most developing countries have better/nicer airports than LAX.
I try very hard to avoid flying in or out of LAX, and so should you.

I'm feeling the pain of losing my upper tier elite airline status for the first time in years.  No lounge access for me.  No free wifi.  No good eating options.  No good ways to transfer between terminals.

But yes to long security checkpoint lines.  Yes to long immigration lines, in the hot basement.  Yes to long customs procedures.  And yes to bathrooms where your piss will ride right back into your bladder once you see the conditions.

Remind me to route myself elsewhere.

If your a lousy and or easily distracted driver...coming to drop off or pick up, don't come here.  There is a traffic cop salivating every 15 feet ready to bust you for the smallest infraction. Maybe thats a good thing?

LAX. It is what it is.

It is the one spot where LA connects with the rest of the world and its limited on space, so it does the best with what its got. It is trying though. Ive seen massive construction going on inside its terminals so that tells me that the message has gotten across.

Besides who wants to really hang out at any airport to admire its decor? You'll probably tune out with your smart phone anyways! Its an airport. You're just suppose to go in and outta there safe and sound. All I ask of LAX is to provide me with free reliable WIFI and a selection of fine drinks and semi healthy food selections.

So if you frequent LAX  for business or pleasure, please be patient...change is coming and all will be well. Oh, and watch your speed.

    Happy and safe travels!

LAX really went downhill with the whole TSA screening and all. It always is a hassle having to check in and getting to your waiting area.

I only come here because of all the options one has when flying (such as times, destinations, etc).

I think its so ridiculous too that they don't serve food on any of their flights. I flew from LA to NY at 1AM and no food was offered except peanuts and cookies.

The terminal is old and could use some renovations including free wifi and more power outlets. The food selections are limited but the airport bar in the United terminal isn't bad. The one plus to this airport is that the walk from the plane to baggage claim to outside was very quick. it's no SF airport but I guess it gets the job done.

I had heard horror stories about LAX before coming here... but after three visits, I can honestly say that it's a very efficiently-run airport with quick and focused staff. Security has not really taken all that long to get through, and the airport itself is clean and well organized.

I haven't really paid too much attention to the food/shopping options available, but there are some decent options if you need a relatively cheap meal before your flight. The Starbucks line gets a little ridiculous though. I did love that there was a book store nearby, too.

I've always flown Southwest though, so that may make a difference in your experiences here- I don't check any baggage so that I don't have to spend extra time here before or after my flight; I'd much prefer to maximize my vacation, thanks.

Interesting side note: when people have picked me up here, it's not unusual for them to ask me to go upstairs to the departures area rather than downstairs to arrivals. I don't know if it's more convenient for them, less traffic and hassle, or simply a personal preference, but it's easy to get to and made pick up a breeze.

Outdated terminals. As one of the busiest airports in the country, this airport is VERY slowly catching up with cities like SFO or even JFK. Maybe. They're finally remodeling and  expanding terminal four but what about the other terminals?

I've been to many of the terminals and the halls are narrow, floors are old and dirty. Welcome to LA! The food/"restaurants" choices are poor to none.

Transportation to the airport is lacking. No public transit that goes directly to the airport. Closest thing is the green metro line then you have to take a shuttle. LAX needs to get some inspiration from other airports.

These days, I'm in and out of LAX twice a week for work. I've been to several airports recently and this is still one of my least favorite. It sucks that I don't have much other choice...Burbank won't get me where I really need to go. Lines for checking your bag or getting through TSA security can be awful if you're not flying first class or don't have status with the airlines. Most terminals aren't connected once you're in the secure area so if you need to get between two terminals for a connecting flight, there's a good chance you need to re-clear security. I haven't found any food here that's any good either.

Worst. Airport. Ever. Seriously. How does a major metro area have this dump as its main airport? Be it the vile bathrooms, the lack of any way to change terminals without going through security again, or the slooooow security lines this place is a nightmare. God help you if you need to eat and are in terminal five. The options are all  bad. Seriously McDonalds is the best option in here. Ugh.

This airport is a dump. LA should really invest it cleaning LAX up and making it nice.  SeaTac, SFO, and Austin-Bergstrom are all great; they have local food, are clean, have modern terminals, and a pleasant, open atmosphere.

LAX just makes me want to get the hell out of there as quickly as possible.

This was the most disgusting airport with the worse people I have ever seen.  I guess I was on the third world side of United Airlines and couldn't have been more miserable for the 4 hours I spent there on a layover.  There was one restaurant and and I think a single coffee shop and a few souvenir stands.  Way down the corridor was another dirty restaurant but I lost my appetite.  There were little charging stations with people huddled like rats around them looking for laptop and iPhone juice.  Awful, awful place.

It's my home base - nothing like the smell of freshly brewed smog seeping through the automatic sliding glass doors and watching the paparazzi swarming around Kim Kardashian at the terminal 3 baggage claim when I arrive home from x destination.  I always appreciate coming home to LA and seeing the diverse mix of people that, in my opinion, you really don't see anywhere else in the world.

Many parts of the airport, though, are in major need of an upgrade.  Take the lead from IAD.

    Blech.

    Just as crummy as ever.

Started outside when the taxi couldn't process my credit card. He said that it's an issue with antennas at LAX making it sound like an airport issue. Can't confirm that for ya without doing a little more research, and well, I don't care that much. I do care when the 1 friggin' ATM in the joint isn't working so I can't get cash for the driver and it says the next nearest locations is 1.4 miles away? Because that's just a hop skip and a jump when you're scrambling to get green for the driver who can't process your card.

Add to that the inability for people to understand that if there's an open kiosk you can proceed, you don't need to wait for someone to say "next" they rarely do. Again might not be an issue with the airport itself maybe the check-in agents?

Faults with the place itself? That small space with people gather at the first security check point is SO small SO hot SO sticky. Does time stop there? Temperature increase? Something barometric. Past security, the gates are old, most smell, the food options are slim and don't taste that great. The whole place looks rough around the edges... like an amateur drag queen the day after a big show. LAX needs to be hosed.

I've developed a seethingly apoplectic apathy regarding LA airport. It's not worth the energy it takes to actually HATE it. meh.
    meh.
    meh.

Between the underground footways that look and smell worse than subway tunnels. . . and the bizarre flourescent soul-sucking lighting, I sometimes panic that I'm dreaming and somehow I've ended up in Downtown Crossing in Boston and can't figure out whether to head to state street or chinatown and then. . . some chick in peeptoe strappy booty stillettos, super low slung jean with a string thong whale tale, tube top, big hair and lip liner with drawn on eyebrows clops by, and I remember. . .RIGHT, I'm in LA. . . .

Beware, allow at least an extra 1/2 hour for Amerian Eagle puddle jump flights to the Bay area . . you have to go through the whole American Terminal, take escalators back down to ground level, stand in a holding pen far too small for the number of people waiting there (also people waiting for Quantas end up there, what the hell. So, if you are on a 45 minute flight, or a 20 hr flight, stand uncomfortably Here.)

Then you take a shuttle bus randomly across the Tarmac with planes taking off and landing all around you, and then arrive at another waiting area. Where you then wait.

    sigh.  grump.

It's ugly, spread out, disorganized, ugly, there are no services of any kind whatsoever once you cross out of security (no food, no stores, no coffee, no bar, no freakin' vending machine. You may, however, use the not too filthy restroom)

LAX. it's a place to land your airplane.

    Meh

Perhaps the ugliest, dirtiest, and lack of service airport I've ever been to. There is this weird security check point where you have to walk up stairs, stand in the narrow hall way and the go through one of two X-rays. Then another long walk to the terminal.  Don't pass the Gordon Biersch, beacuse McDonald's will be your next best opportunity for food. Be prepared to pay $9.99 for T-Mobile Wi-Fi. And if you are lucky enough to get a seat, it is really is your lucky day! The restrooms are up to par with gas stations.

Looking  forward to another trip in June.

This isn't the worst airport, but after visiting other national airports, it is lacking in many areas. It gets the job done, parking is fairly easy, many ways to get to and from the airport (I prefer the Flyaway), and its easy to get to and from the terminals.

I would not recommend this airport if you have a long layover.

If you are dropping off or picking up always use upper level roadway. The lower level is divided and hard to navigate but the upper level is less crowded and open across five lanes. Have arriving visitors pick up luggage and meet you on upper level and you will save time and frustration. Also use the cell phone lot on Supelveda. You can park for free and wait for cell phone call of arriving passengers saving even more headaches.

This airport needs a complete overhaul for convenience sake.  It also looks like one of the oldest airports ever kept.  Not  much food establishment options to choose from in the Alaska/Horizon area I was in and the other Alaska/Horizon location is equally bad. One location as a Ruby's which sucks and is overpriced, a sports bar and coffee shop.  The other terminal has a Starbucks, Burger King and a seafood/bar and chocolate shop (forgot the name) but seriously? I can only imagine the rest of your airport.

This message is for the big money folk down in LA...please help your city improve your airport.  There is money down there although the low income folk would beg to differ...if you have that BIG MONEY please I beg of you to fix it.  Its strange design layout makes it very unuser friendly.

I like nothing about it and the one bar I managed to go into charged almost 10 dollars for 1 partially filled glass of wine.  It was about 1/3 full. It was appalling to say the least.  Next time I fly through LAX, I'm brining some mini's with me as long as they're within the 3.4 oz specs.

    Can't stand this airport.

OK - HERE'S something GOOD about LAX - It's not as wretched as PHL!

I agree with the dozen or so of the recent reviews of LAX about crowds, amenities, and especially the dated architecture, lighting, and decor that makes you feel like you're in a grainy 1970s movie from the time you walk through the door.  And the design predates some of the more creative solutions to large airports, like Denver or Atlanta where the airports are at least as massive, but underground rail systems makes everything a little more accessible.  No such amenities at LAX.  If you need to get from Terminal 1 to terminal 7, you may as well take a cab downtown and then another one BACK to the airport and start over!

Truthfully, I like the Southern Californian feel of LAX, especially when you land here in the morning and get a decent dose of natural sunlight.  But after dark, you are inundated with bizarre fluorescent lighting schemes that make everything feel old and yellow.  Lackluster is the word that comes to mind.

I'm almost always on United when I come through LAX - plan on 15 minutes minimum from gate to gate as you might arrive in terminal 6 and fly out of terminal 8.  In that case, 15 minutes would be a marathon sprint!

And oh, your flight from San Francisco might only be an hour, but plan on another 30 minutes taxi time on the tarmac.  If you land on the runway opposite your terminal, it would be faster to get off the plane there on the taxi-way and take a train back to Los Angeles!  The place is simply TOO big for its own good!

Sorry LAX.  Would like to give you a bit more credit, but I think some of my fellow Yelpers have the right angle on this one - if you CAN, use a different airport!

This airport definitely needs some updating.  It is very slow going through security.  On the way out, I was in an expedited lane for people who did not have any hand luggage, an idea that is long overdue.  Unfortunately, that trend has not caught on out here.

To make matters worse, they were training a new TSA agent.  Sigh.

    Glad to be home.

Terrible.  Dirty, crowded, old.  The seats are all hard as rock.  The food options are minimal.  And there's virtually no outlets to charge your electronics at.  A hole of an airport for a hole of a city.  Oh, and most of the staff is crabby/angry/mean because they deal with the same attitude from passengers all day.  Cheers!

There are "charging stations" provided by some company (Samsung?) that have like 4-6 outlets per station.  Problem is, people camp out at the things.

On the plus side, every ten minutes there is an announcement talking about unattended baggage, narrated (I'm pretty sure) by Vin Scully!?  Awesome.

All in all, this airport is a total piece of crap.  It reflects poorly on LA.

Driving to LAX midday on a weekday is the hot ticket!

If you have to take or pick up anyone from the airport then you should try to organize your flights if you can.  Going around midday  on a weekday is the best way to avoid traffic.  I made it there from the La Crescenta area in 30 minutes.  The Pasadena/San Pedro 110 Freeway was traffic free as was the I-105 Century Freeway.

    PROS:

Hardly any traffic on the freeways.

Drop off is easy.  Just pull over and say "Hasta la vista, Arrivaderci or Aloha" to your house guest.

House guests are like fish; they stink after three days.

Carpool lanes on 110 and 105.

    CONS:

Any unexpected accidents on the freeway.  Keep your radio on.

If there is an accident head to the coast for few hours and have your kids find another way home from school.

Ugh...inefficient security checkpoints. This is probably more for TSA at LAX than anything else.

It seems like every agent there have to ask permission to do anything.  And by the laws of queuing theory we all know that this is not good for the over all flow.  Really? don't they train you to make decisions as to whether or not someone requires additional screening?  And if they do, don't you think you want to take them aside and conduct the additional screening instead of holding people up?

I don't know if their incompetence stems from being TSA, being Californian, plain incompetence or a combination of all of the above.

Once you get past TSA (budget more than your usual 2 hours till boarding time), the terminal itself is not exactly nice. Every restaurant in there is greasy fast food everything.  Not exactly what I want to eat before I get on a plane....

They do have one thing going for them, charging stations for people to plug in phones, laptops, and what ever device you need charging.  And its free! That's pretty cool.  I'm glad I didn't have to hunt down an outlet and defend it from other people waiting for me to unplug my stuff so they can charge their devices.

I understand..they get alot of people going through this airport.  And they may not have the resources to manage it.  But seriously, with a little bit of modeling and a bit more educated people running the TSA there, this airport could be more efficient.

    I like LAX.

Most of the times that I've been there it hasn't been insanely crowded. It doesn't take more than 10 minutes for me to get through security and workers there are pretty friendly. It's a very big airport and is segmented like it. Luckily, I usually fly southwest so I leave at the first terminal.

Not a bad place to fly. I don't like the lack of free wifi though.

PACKED PACKED PACKED!...at ALL times of the day.  Traffic on the freeways to get there will of course be bad during certain times, but it's the traffic INSIDE the airport that gets RIDICULOUS!

If you are going to pick someone up from the airport, either park, or make sure whoever you're picking up is already outside because if you want to just circle around the airport instead of paying for parking, it can take you up to 15 minutes.

Cars, shuttles, and buses are all mixed up in the traffic, creating one big mess of crazy drivers...and none of them are polite.

You're better off flying out from Burbank or Long Beach and tickets tend to be cheaper at those airports depending on your destination.

Personally, I try to avoid LAX at ALL COSTS!

You get the 2nd star for being 'my' airport. This place is so out of date, it's criminal. Lines are always long, restrooms are gross and food options are few (and pricey). How is it possible that LAX can't manage decent services? Why aren't there more areas with outlets for people that need to plug in?

Completely inefficient from top to bottom and I don't understand why there haven't been any significant improvements in the decades since I've been using it. I mean, good grief. Look at Detroit, Dallas, Boston and Atlanta. THOSE are the kind of airports you don't mind having to be stuck in.

    Get it together, LAX.
