This place is such a hidden gem in Calgary. I've been 3-4 times for improv night and just love it. The atmosphere is relaxed, the crowd younger (for some reason when I think Theater I have this image of people in their 50's-60's drinking sherry and wearing tuxes and gowns, but loose moose is lots of collage age people as well as a mix of others too).

Anyway the actors are awesome and it is super funny. It is well worth the $10 admission price. Everything is non profit and the place is all run by volunteers who just love theater. Improv goes every Friday and Saturday night at 7ish. The website has listings.

Skip the movies one Friday and go here instead. You will have a much better time!

I don't know why I let all ya'll in on my best date spots, but here we go again. You're lucky, lucky people. So pay attention boys and girls, because this one's a real gem.

It's Friday night and you're strugglin' to come up with a place to take that wonderful woman in your life. You don't have the deep pockets for Teatro, the ballet isn't playing and you're definitely not foolish enough to try and pass Moxie's off as a good night out.

Seriously dudes, if you take a girl to moxies and act like you've done her a favor, I hope your ass gets dumped ON THE QUICK.

So where do you go? The Loose Moose, ya turkey!

This is where you can get wine in a cup, brush shoulders with freaks geeks, hipsters, chess club kids, people older than your parents and more. It's an eclectic crowd - and that's what makes it what it is.

Improv night here is awesome. You never know what you're going to get. Sometimes it's hilarious, sometimes it's a bit flat, but it's ALWAYS going to give you something to talk about in the car ride on your way out to another classy establishment after the show is done.

See, that's what a good date is about. Originality. Creativity. Giving your date and you something to talk about other than your boring job and your probably-boring life. Laughing together. Sitting shoulder to shoulder in little theater chairs watching semi-pro actors work their butt off to entertain you. Sneaking your arm around her shoulders complaining about the fact that there's not a lot of room on the armrest.

    Easy.

Think about it - you could go to the movies and pay $12 for a bag of popcorn that's been sitting in the machine since noon, served by a greasy kid who's just trying to save up to buy the next Final Fantasy title for his wii.

OR, you could go to improv night, eat a handful of twizzlers and see a show that will never, ever be repeated verbatim.

    You know what to do.

I assumed this place would be for an elderly demographic or that I would be entertained by nerdy drama geeks or something along those lines.
While some of the people performing are drama geeks, they were totally awesome. The cast was mostly younger people, and the people attending last Saturday's improv show were a range of ages.
For $12, and $10 for students, this is a fun alternative to going to see a movie, with a lot more laughs. I liked that the audience got to participate in deciding what acts were to continue and what got cut. The actors are witty and talented. I would be so stressed having to come up with improv story lines like that on the fly.
i was surprised at the sexual innuendo and swearing in the acts - no biggie - however 'angry dad' sitting in front of me, with his two tween daughters wasn't impressed by it (there's no warning of offensive material), and he propmtly removed them from the venue at intermission. Ahhh, funny.
All in all, my friends were laughing and happy with the show - thanksfully, as I suggested going, and we plan to all go again. And maybe try a Friday night this time.

I've heard about Loose Moose Theatre Company before, I made a big banner poster for them before in the early summer but I didn't see it anywhere inside boo! I was busy reading reviews on Yelp yesterday and totally lost track of time and when I realized it was 7:37 I knew I wouldn't make it there for 7:45 to meet up with Angelo and the gang.

It was a bit confusing at first when trying to look for the first, if you're getting onto 17th avenue / blackfoot trail heading west you turn off on 26th Avenue and stay in the right lane continuing down there. Instead of turning at your first left into the Crossroad Market (I knew this wasn't right because the parking lot was empty and I thought I was in some b-rated horror flick) you want to be turning your second left and then you'll see the pile of cars parked for Loose Moose.

I loved Drama class, I took it every year in Junior High School cause the thought of acting, play writing and improv has always sparked my interests. I wasn't sure what to expect with The Christmoose Carol show and how much improv there would actually be and wow was I ever impressed.

The great thing about what these actors/actresses do is that use any available tool, sound, etc available to them to improvise on what the story line and script already has become.

What makes live shows so great is anything can happen and when it does you have to be ready to act upon it or else the audience just gets confused and heck why not? I can't recall a moment in the play/show where the audience wasn't laughing. It was really cool much like comedy shows and other live shows where there are a ton of audience interactions as well.

My favorite actor/character was the guy playing the kid in the ugly christmas sweater / ghost of the past his facial expressions were hilarious, I'm sure that personality corresponds to his real life personality too which is hilarious.

Glad I had the chance to go check something like this out and you should too!

Oh boy! We won tickets on Twitter to go to their annual Christmas production, a Chrismoose Carol. I'd never been to it, nor ever heard of it, but it got me in the Christmas spirit almost more than anything!

5-6 actors put on a version of a Christmas Carol (apparently in previous years they have done Westerns and various genres). It was terribly low-budget, hilariously improv'd, ridiculously absurd, and very very funny. It's a treat to go to a Christmas production that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Guys on bungee cords and references to Calgary neighbourhoods as though they are part of 19th century London? What else would you expect from the Loose Moose?!

I could never understand why I never ended up watching Loose Moose moose, especially in it's day when my friend Mike Tan graced the stage with his good looks and versatile humour. Still, what a great place to bring a group to. Despite a few minor snags such as limited payment abilities and phone/box office service availability, it was very easy to work with Loose Moose. They were kind enough to accommodate to group bookings and when I incidentally scheduled a UYE on wrong dates, they offered to shift our group into a different night.

The Christmasmoose Carol was a great production. I wasn't quite sure how much was left open in the script for the actors to freestyle/improv, but every minute was entertaining and as a Charles Dicken's connoisseur, they did justice to the classic story.

Ok I lied, I know very little about Dickens

For $15 Loose Moose will entertain anyone from ADD ridden individuals who end up loosing count of how many "e" and "t" are supposed to be in "theater" to the elitist theatre snob looking for a light break from "avant garde" stage business they have to put themselves through. I agree with Van, Loose Moose did bring back memories of Drama class. I am very interested in checking out their intro improv classes :)

As largely stated in the reviews, Loose Moose seems to be the ideal place to take dates. A dark cold room that presents opportunities and excuses to grope and suck face? Duly noted

The Loose Moose is so much FUN. It's perfect for groups old or young, first dates, everyone will enjoy it. As mentioned in other reviews, it's attached to the Crossroads Market building, which is offers a lot  of parking spots.  The theatre holds a few hundred people, so no matter where you're sitting, you have a good view of the stage. They did Super Scene the night we went. The 5 actors would propose a chapter in a story they would direct, and the audience got to vote on which ones sounded the most interesting. As the performances go on, there ends up being one storyline that ultimately wins. I have to give it to people who do improve, it takes a lot of balls to get up on stage an just go with the flow, not knowing where you'll end up. We laughed a lot in the two hours we were there. More than worth the measly $12 dollars they charge ($10 for students) I can't wait to go back.

This place is an amazing hidden gem, tucked away behind Crossroads Market. I used to pass by this place every day on my commute home from downtown, and regret not stopping in and checking out a show sooner. $15 was all I had to plunk down for an incredible experience called a Chrismoose Carol. Best adaptation of a Christmas Carol I've ever seen! Well, next to my personal childhood favorite, Mickey's Christmas Carol :). And honestly, far better English accents than some Hollywood actors! Bungee Jacob Marley! Is there any other kind now?

I've been a follower of Loose Moose Theatre for Kids since my kids were small - that's about 20 years. Now I take my grandchildren and we all love it. The seating is really good - you can see clearly from any seat. Your kids can have their snacks during the performance and are encouraged to interact with the performers during the play. How awesome is that? It's comfortable, great fun, usually has some jokes built into the play geared for the adults (clean of course) and afterwards the kids can meet the actors to talk and get their programmes signed. Terrific entertainment and not too lengthy for the kids. The location is good as well because you can explore the market and galleries which reside in the same building. Yes! Enjoy!

I have long been a big fan of improvisational theatre.  Ever since performing in high school and teaching shortly after graduating, improv will always be an exciting memory for me.  When the chance came up to go watch some improv here in Calgary, I jumped.

The Loose Moose Theatre Company has been around since 1977.  They are well known within the improv community for being a top act.  They recently moved to the Crossroads Market and perform out of that location.

We had the good pleasure of attending one of their Friday night Theatresports events.  Theatresports is where they combine traditional improv with a competitive team environment.  Effectively, teams compete against each other to make you laugh.

The quality of the individuals and teams was incredible.  They definitely know how to perform and both my fiance and I were laughing all the way through.  I've also heard great things about their other events, but haven't had the chance to check it out.  But for Theatresports alone, I walked out in pain from laughing!

A great stepping stone for budding comedians to develop improvisational skills and practice assertiveness.  For the audience a real treat, as it is a very personal and experiential outing.  You got to put up with the good and the bad, and sometimes it even gets ugly, but it's well worth the visit.  Important to our blossoming art culture.
