Lola has a tasteful selection of stationery and greeting cards. The assortment is dominated by baby and wedding cards, but you can also find birthday cards, thank-you cards, love and anniversary cards, and more. If you like letterpress cards, Lola has plenty.

I spot a card on almost every row that would be great for someone I know... or myself. I will bashfully admit that being in this store makes me want to stock up on cards to hang on my own walls.

Stay classy: emails are good for business correspondence, but special occasions call for special cards - Lola's got you!

    CARDS
Some say, "nothing says I love you like a handwritten card."  Ugh, debatable, but a card can definitely carry heavy meaning.  An old fashion card is inconvenient at times: kinda hard to find, find the words to print, and print legibly (for some) given our technology.  However, the perfect card for your loved one with a few hand written words can be priceless.  Especially if you're broke in this economy, you may want to consider a heart felt card - beyond your standard Hallmark.  If you got dough, grab one and load it with some cash or a gift card!

    THE OCCASION
I came here because my niece is turning two this year, and I want her to remember how much Auntie Ray loved her before she became a rotten child (totally kidding - she's already rotten and I even love her for that).  Whether it's an old card for V-day, a B-day, graduation, cards mark a point in time that E-cards just don't quite flag.

I walked into this store and found a beautiful assortment of cards - took the time I didn't have because she's worth it.  Sure, she can't read now but she's likely to out-live me, and I know my sister, like me, has a shoe box to toss this in.  When baby girl moves out, she'll get that box and take a look - we always stumble upon old cards in times of transition.  Sometimes those cards reaffirm our decision to keep it moving or reconsider our direction, ya know...

    NO OCCASION?
I recommend grabbing some stationary anyway.  My grandma was a pretty classy lady and taught us that it's rude not to send thank you's.   In her day, she collected stationary and sent thank you's regularly - I so don't do this but I've found it helpful to have stationary laying around: thank a boss for a bonus, drop an invite to your girl who just split with her man, write a rain-check for your boy, forgotten b-day, or just a simple thank you for being you.

    CARDS ARE UNDERRATED
Well I dare you to send one to someone after they do something nice for you.  Just writing this I can recall five cards that changed my own life - and if you knew me you'd know I'm not all that sentimental or gooshy.  (1) my first real love valentine (2) my first birthday card from a acquaintance that ended up being one of my best friends (3) a college graduation card from pops (4) 18th birthday card from mom (5) good luck card from my firm after moving on to law school.

    BOTTOM LINE
I think this store has something for everyone.  Check it out and support a local business, even if it's in a yuppie neighborhood.  If you're not shopping for yourself, consider the stationary as a gift.  Lil classy old school is cool.

    NERD ALERT
At the counter, they have astronaut ice cream! I'm giving away my age here, but seriously - did you eat this as a kid???  Sweet memories

Oooooh what a cute little place! It's card heaven, and I'm a card whore. I buy up different birthday cards inspirational cards so when the right moment or birthday pops up....I'm ready! And I have a rockin' card, you know the one people say "where did you find this card, it's perfect" or "it's so funny". Yeah I know.....I have my secret places. he he he....
Lola of North Beach is my new personal excellent selection find!
Oh and they have cool tchotchke's when life calls for a little something for a little someone special.

Oh Lola.....you caught me by surprise on a warm summer day.  I was strolling around North Beach and found you nestled in between bars, restaurants, and cafes.

You were definitely a pleasant surprise.  I recall spending over an hour just reading through all the quirky cards, giggling at the little trinkets, and being stuck by the awesome pens.....It took me forever to decide which one to get.  In the end I ended up with the fried egg :)

I've come back repeatedly because I seem to be addicted to your cards.  Although my gift giving has become slightly predictable, every card that I give has the same effect every time.  It brings a smile upon the receivers face and that is all that I can ask for.

Aside from shopping for gifts, I spent a lot of time looking at the recipe books too.  This place has a little bit of everything compacted in a cute little space.

    I *HEART* this store.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that they have the BEST greeting cards in San Francisco.  Every time I go in here I end up buying way more cards than I need because I find so many great ones that are unique that I haven't seen in every other card store.

There are also lots of small items that are perfect for gifts, but I usually end up buying things for myself!

    Employees are super nice, too.

A cute shop with nice employees :)
Lola has an awesome selection of cards, including many wedding & baby ones I've never seen anywhere else. Most of the cards are individual but there are a few boxed sets.
They also carry other goodies like soap, lotions, baby items, books, san francisco related items like cable car christmas ornaments.

Lola is absolutely adorable, a tiny store (think, one person per aisle) crammed with lots of unique cards and kitschy items, including SF branded souvenirs that aren't tacky.  It's one of those places which sell things you really don't need, but can't resist because it's too darn cute/stupid/funny, or all of the above.  I got a kick out of the thumbs-up "Like" and thumbs-down "Dislike" ink stamps, mocking the familiar Facebook feature.  And the contact lens and eyeglasses cases with an owl printed on the front with the words, "I can't see shit!"  What I did need was a yearly planner, which I usually get at Borders.  With their stores now defunct, I needed to find a new store to purchase them from--queue Lola.  My patronage is also supporting a local business, always a plus.  I don't make it up to North Beach often, and sometimes forget that there are little gems like this store all around the city.

I'll have to remember to come back for baby gifts.  It almost makes me want to have kids just to buy all the cute baby items they sell here...almost.

Lola of North Beach is a cool little gift shop and just the right place to buy a post or greeting card, other stationary products, or a cute little gift for the folks back home. And sometimes, analog greetings are better than the digital ones.

Whenever I'm in the neighbourhood, I make it a point to walk down Grant Avenue in General and stop at Lola in particular. The store space is cozy, but the good things definitely come in small packages.

    LOVE LOLA.

This is my favorite card store in the city.  Courtney J. introduced me to this place years ago and I absolutely LOVE the selection of cards this cute little shop has to offer. The store also has the best 'fun' gifts and reminds me of what San Francisco is really about - supporting the mom and pop shops that make the city diverse and fabulous.

I wish I had more cards to write on a daily basis... I could spend my whole paycheck here!

    Dear Lola:

I am not a greeting cards kinda guy, but after I walked into your shop, I became a believer.

I was amazed at the variety of cards you carried, compared to what I normally see from the regular Hallmark selection in other establishments.  Now I understand the power of greeting cards.

Picking the right card for the right person for the right occasion does take a lot of thought.  Your staff did not rush me to find a card.  Instead I was in there for an hour reading and chuckling at some of the possibilities.

Although it is hard to find parking for your cute store, I will be returning here to purchase more cards on other occasions.  There were many cute books and cool accessories that I did not have a chance to look at, since I was on a mission to get a Father's Day card before this Sunday.

    I hope you understand.

    Best Regards,

    C

Definitely  a charming place to find greeting cards, baby gifts (Onesies with headphones and SF themes such as the I dig Marina Chicks onesie, baby shoes, baby socks), tasteful journals, thank you cards, candles, gift bags, calendars, ornaments, erasers, magnets, rubber stamps, etc.  The Japanese food erasers that I like so much (the ones that look like sushi and cake) are sprinkled throughout the store.  Custom printing services are available.

    Things I spotted and liked:
    * Mini tubes of Lollia hand creams, perfect stocking stuffers
    * Sushi calendar in sticker form - each month is printed on a different piece of sushi
    * Cupcake greeting cards
    * Carrot & Stick Press and Snow & Graham letterpress notecards
    * Metal paper clips in various animal shapes like ducks, penguins and cows
    * Tiny Japanese super strong sushi magnets
    * Moleskin notebooks

My greeting card standards are high and I noticed that Lola's carries greeting card lines that aren't commonly found elsewhere.  I'm constantly looking for unique cards so that's a plus.  For the type of girly store that it is, they have a surprising number of humorous and irreverent cards.  That's a minus.  I never feel comfortable giving those types of cards and would rather see more of the pretty letterpress cards.

Lola and her tempting walls covered with cards - each one eliciting an emotional response greater than the card before. Funny dogs, heart-felt love poems, and simply stated words of celebration. That's the beauty in the business of correspondence: rarely does one take the time to write feelings of hate or hurt or spite. People write to one another out of passion, care, and consideration. Well wishing, a simple hello, or declarations of love... and they all start here... at Lola.

Imagine if you could catch all of the happy thoughts that Lola's four walls encompass, bottle them up and share them with someone that needs it. Every time someone picks up a card and smiles because it reminds them of someone they love, it ignites something. Something positive and wonderful that I wish I could hold. Before computers and the instant gratification of email and instant messaging, people would actually write to one another. When was the last time you picked up a real pen and put it to a fresh piece of stationary or run you tongue across a real envelope? It makes you think a bit, doesn't it?

The way we correspond with one another has completely changed the feel of our communication. Thank you is shortened to "thx", and most adjectives and feelings lost along the way. Lola adds warmth and thought to an otherwise basic message by simply adding paper. It's incredible.

Lola is a cute little stationary store in the North Beach. I stumbled into Lola on a Sunday shopping trip to Chinatown. I parked ALL the way in the North Beach - that's how bad parking is. However, I did not mind the nice walk through all the little boutiques on Upper Grant. I ended up buying a 2009 calendar featuring vintage artwork of Italia (good luck finding that at your local Walmart or Target).  And while I was paying for my calendar, my eyes fell upon a little story book with a very recognizable green cover. "Good Night Moon" was one of the very first books I learned to read through all on my own. I bought that too.

The store owner is a very sweet lady who let me store my giant calendar and storybook at her store while I walked the 4 blocks into Chinatown to get splashed by fish water and purchase my fresh, very reasonably priced veggies. Her son is a local part-time photographer who takes stunning photos of San Francisco - also available for sale at Lola's.

$20 spent at Lola = vintage calendar, sweet smile, contribution to your community
$20 spent at Target = generic puppy calendar, plastered smile, contribution to a corporation

I urge you to please support your local small business owner this Holiday season!!! One of the wonderful things about living in San Francisco vs. the suburbs is the fact that Targets and Walmarts are not your neighborhood stores--you actually have plenty of small businesses like Lola's to shop at. Your dollar will go much farther in a struggling economy...

This place has the best selection of cards and cute baby items and is a joy to browse on a weekend.  I've bought many cards from Lola, but the two best purchases have been a cute baby-tee for my friend's new baby son, and a non-cheesy "Congratulations on your pregnancy" card for my friend who A) isn't finding out the sex, and b)is in a bi-racial relationship.  Can I tell you how dififcult it is to find cards that don't have little blond babies on them dressed in blue or pink?  I searched up and down to find a good card for her with no luck elsewhere, but I went to Lola and had so many choices, I bought two!

Their boxed cards are also nice and they have a beautiful letter press selection.  This is the first place I think of when I need a card.

I get excited in stores like Lola.

This is a place of quality gifts. The card selection always makes me laugh and sigh. I want every candle in that place, but unfortunately I only give and get them as gifts. They are a little pricey for a scented candle. The baby booty's and clothes are adorable and soft blankets that I use for myself. Hmmm... they also have cute wrapping and gift bags. But best of all when you want to pay $5 for a blank greeting card, come here!

Just a reminder, being that this is my favorite gift stop, my birthday is coming up in October. Note that my friends!

I visited and loved their Ghiradelli Square location, so it was inevitable that I would eventually make my way over to their namesake location.  And it is every bit as delightful and wonderful, if not more.

With plenty of witty, humourous, and/or meaningful cards to peruse, I decided to take the sporadic approach, wandering the store in multipe figure eights, picking up whatever card happened to catch my eye on that round.  And oh the sights to behold!  I found myself chuckling on quite a few occasions, and the bulk of those cards just *had* to be shared with my card store companions.

I left with a Naughty Betty "Happy Birthday to my most Fabulous Gay Friend" birthday card.  Interestingly enough, I only just realized, upon looking up the card on the internet for the sake of this review, that it's a birthday card.  Somehow, I missed the interior greeting and thought it was blank.  And sent it off.  To a recipient whose birthday is not for another few months.  Oops.  But it's still a perfectly appropriate card, and therefore I'm sure I will be forgiven.

I also bought a pack of 6 "You're Welcome" cards (http://www.uncookedlan...).  I've been searching for these my whole life!!

The lovely individuals who work here are also great!  The woman who rang me up was super friendly and happy and great.  Yay.

Lola has been one of my favorite stores in North Beach for a long time. They have stuff there I would love to buy even though I don't need it. And I would but I have no money.

Anyway, Lola has the greatest selection of thank you, get well, happy anniversary and what-ever-else-you-can-think-of cards. They're not your crappy Hallmark/Walgreens variety. No. These are cards you want to buy and just keep cuz they're so cool, or they just make you feel happy. They also have a bunch of other stuff that's way over priced but cool to look at anyway.

On the useful side of the spectrum, Lola's used to offer a great selection of notebooks: spiral bound, not spiral bound, cool graphics on the cover, small, over sized, lined and not. But on a recent visit I sadly realized that they had done away with most of their note books. Why? I dunno. To make space for over priced stuff that's only good to look at, I guess. They still carry the mole skins, but I'm over those.

    Doggies welcome

This is such a wonderful little spot for gifts and cards. It reminds me of what Papyrus was back back back in the day. Each card should be special and full of that hand made touch, that hand written effort which we've lost in the age of emails. I'm just blown away by the walls of smart cards and personalized greetings.

I feel like I'm in the presence of greatness when I see all the pretty things in this store. If I had more money, I'd buy up the store itself and be a happy girl. They have such beautiful gift ideas for small children too. If you're in the market for beautiful gift ideas for a baby shower, this is where you need to go to first. I definitely would make the trek all way into San Fran just to get the best of the best from Lola.

We purchased a beautiful baby blanket for the boyfriend's new 5 day old cousin. See picture:

So much cuteness in such a small place. I walked by it once at night after it's closed and saw the cutest iPood onesie on the window. It was perfect as a gift for a friend who's expecting a baby girl. So I vowed to come back sometime later, hopefully before the baby's born. Because god knows I hate driving to the city.

So anyway, I finally went back today and got the onesie, plus another one that says "I might barf". I spent about $55 for 2 onesies plus a card.

Make sure you know what you're getting before setting foot in this store or you might be tempted to buy stuff you don't actually need just because they're cute. Seriously, I was having a hard time not to buy all the other onesies besides the iPood one.
But all this baby stuff still doesn't convince me to have a baby of my own though. It's fun dressing them up, but I don't think I can handle my own. I think I'll just get another dog or something.

Besides all the cards and papery they carry, the baby clothes, blanket and shoes are adorable, very soft and fluffy! They don't have inappropriate catch phrases like, "Who's my daddy?" But ambitious and simple t-shirt patterns that are conveniently packed and ready to ship to your recently knocked up gal pal.

I ADORE shops like this.  In fact, this may be my new favorite place to shop for cards.

In this small shop, Lola has a great assortment of cards and can custom-print stationary or announcements for any occasion.  There are is a very good selection of letterpress cards which are my personal kryptonite.  Oh letterpress cards, how cute and sweet you are!  Delicious and sweet like a cupcake!  Sorry, having a moment....anyway, in addition to great cards, Lola carries some really fun baby gifts (one in particular that comes in a box ready to post...brilliant!) as well as all of the Moleskine products and a nice variety of Kate Spade stationary and desk supplies.  Me likey.

Oh gosh, I almost forgot that they carry Russel & Hazel products here - it was my first introduction to them today.  Great notebooks, binders and office products with a modern touch - made me feel organized just by looking at them.

Exercising the most restraint possible, I walked out with a new set of letterpress note cards by Carrot & Stick (they have the best selection from this company that I have seen yet), 5 cards, and a book.

If you like cute, clever and beautiful cards, Lola is worth a visit.  Valentine's Day is coming up, and if you're like me, you haven't quite finished all of your Christmas thank you notes (please don't tell my Mom)....

Sure, it's a chick place. It caters to gift buyers and now a little bit more of an emphasis on paper (invitations and stuff like that).
But, if you are in a pinch for a card and something small, it's a great spot. plus, Ivan is a cool guy and a smart shopkeeper.

So months ago, while walking by this store my boyfriend and I spotted the super adorable iPoo'd onesie. Both had a good laugh, stored it in the ol' memory bank until we found a reason to buy it. (and not for ourselves!)

So a friend had a baby! We immediately walked to Lola, picked up the onesie and a hilarious how-to parenting book and a super cute greeting card.  And had one hell of a time not buying 10,000 other adorable knickknacks. But now I know where to go when I need something quirky and cute!

Hands down my favorite card store in SF.  Amazing selection of well made and funny cards.  They're also not really that pricey when you think about the fact that they're generally made in the USA/Britain. Much butter then buying the junky hallmark cards made in china.

They also have a good selection of gifts, especially baby items.

Totally worth the visit to North Beach.  Check out their unique cards & items!

I visted here last year and was delighted by its choice of stationery and gifts. the cards have a very 60's style, with graphics and bright colors.
it is a great place for gift buying and finding something unusual.

AHHHHHHHHH! paper! yeah, i love paper. it's my favorite.
and this store. letterpress cards! sighhhhhhhhhh.
a perfect place to pick up a cute gift for a baby shower, or for a friend who enjoys yummy-smelling candles or pretty journals/stationary.
the owner is SO nice. definitely worth a little stop, even just to admire the beautiful paper.

Love this shop.  And the blonde haired lady who usually works here is really cool and funny.  They're all really cool and nice, actually.

Some of the cards have cracked me up so bad I had to buy them even though I had no one to send them to.  They didn't get upset (or call police) when I made an ass of myself laughing hysterically at a card with an alien on it (you had to be there, it is really funny).  they didn't even look at me funny when I came up to pay for it, tears running down my face.

I got my grandmother a photo album here.  It was pretty, just the right size, and unique.

Check out their cards by the cardmaker "Papaya."  They are the most beautiful cards.  I send these to my mother-in-law, grandmother, etc.  My own family doesn't do emotion, so luckily Lola also  has plenty of smart-ass cards for me to send to my siblings.

This is the only place I shop for cards, or for the "Wheel of Responsibility" for my brother and sister-in-law, who just became parents (god help them).

In sum: Beautiful cards.  Hilarious "make you laugh so hard you cry" cards.  Sympathy cards for your pets (which came in handy far too many times recently, unfortunately).  All kinds of cards.  Beautiful gifts, funny gifts, unique gifts, and cool employees.

I love Lola of north beach!

I went to them after having a bad experience at papyrus with my wedding invitations. If you are planning an event or a wedding you quickly learn how involved and costly the process of getting invitations can be.

The owners and staff at Lola were fantastic. They were so helpful and easy to deal with. I ended up getting wedding announcements, favors, thank you notes, and my program from them. They all turned out fantastic. Also, I am always a fan of patronizing local boutiques instead of big chain stores. My only regret was that I didn't come here first before messing with papyrus.
