Are you looking for good local food?
The market is definitely cheaper, but Local Source is definitely more adorable.
They carry an ever-changing selection of local vegetables, meat, cheeses, bread, preserves, and grains. They're always expanding their product line. They know all about the stuff they sell. And they bake a mean...er.... baked good.
Tops for summer groceries trips? Raid the freezer with the Dee Dee's Ice Cream sandwiches.
I have even been lucky enough to attend meetings catered by the Local Source crew, and I heartily recommend. Once, I even managed to attend a breakfast they put on, which was neat, if a bit... odd. (It was soon after they opened.)
All in all this spot is well worth regular visits, especially if you can't get yourself out of bed in time for the market.

Overall, I certainly respect what this place is trying to do.  If, as I do, you like to support local business by purchasing homegrown goods and commodities as much as possible, this store is definitely a step in the right direction.  They sell a variety of foodstuffs, including: produce, meat products, fresh bread and other baked goods, many different kinds of cheeses, jams, jellies, and other preserves, even organic baking supplies.

Of particular note for me are their homemade apple sauce and their apple blueberry cider (both quite tasty).

The only thing I have to grumble about is their pricing in some regards.  I expect organic goods to be a bit more expensive than what I would find in the big box stores, and I'm okay with that because it's worth it to me to know that I am supporting local business.  And admittedly, some, if not many of their prices are pretty fair.  However, to give an example, I find it a little exorbitant to pay $9 for a jar of homemade jam, when I could buy the same flavour at the Brewery Market (and still be supporting local farmers) for $5.

Maybe I'm just a grump...or cheap...or a cheap grump.  Either way, there are still many reasons for me to shop at the Local Source Market, I just tend to be a bit choosy with what I buy there.

I found out about this place at the Saltscape trade show. I was at a farmer's booth looking at his prices for farm-raised meat and he had a pamphlet for Local Source Market as that is where this farmer drops his meat off for pick-up.

When I went to pick-up my meat I took a look around... it has a few interesting things to think about - preserves and the like. However, I went with a bag of small red potatoes and a loaf of raisin bread. Potatoes were just great as potatoes go. I cubed them and did some "roasties".

The raisin bread is only okay. It is quite a dense bread and while I'll eat it I will not get again. Not bad just not my cup of tea.

I'd buy other items from here potentially.

I pop in here at least once a week (work around the corner). They've got a great (although slightly small) lunch menu of deelish paninis and soups.
You can also pick up locally sourced fruits/veggies/cheeses etc.

Local Source Market is an excellent place to head if you're the type of person who enjoys supporting local business as well as consuming food that hasn't traveled extensively.

In a cross section done in the recent Coast 'Green Halifax' guide you can see that buying basic items such as: Speerville Mills oatmeal, apples, eggs, butternut squash and chicken-- can be found cheaper at Local Source Market, or at least on par with the Halifax Farmer's Market.

Some of the things that I found particularly of note:

    *The Coast Green Halifax Guide

    *Boates Cider

    *Meadowbrook maple sausage

*Terroir pear honey and sun gold tomato ketchup

    *Dragons Breathe cheeses.

Lots of great choices at Local Source! Be sure to check the bulletin board for community announcements.

Local Source is a great place to get all of your Farmers' Market goodies when it's not Saturday morning. It's so nice to have a spot that serves as a baby-grocery store, offering great local produce and delightful items, like cheeses from Nova Scotia and grains from New Brunswick.

They also sell goods like maple syrup, frozen local and organic berries, as well as a variety of meats. You can even stop by for lunch, as they have sammies and salads, as well as coffee, tea and sweets.

I love biking over in the summer and stocking up on apples. One of my favorite things to buy is their raw milk cheese from Quebec - it's a real treat, and although it only comes in small blocks it really goes the distance with its rich and flavorful taste.

I support this business' mandate of offering local and mainly organic food year round, while fostering a very nice community space. You should swing by and pick up some yummy consumables today!

We Maritimers love, love, love to support our local businesses. Its just the way we roll, and with the Local Source Market, well, it makes buying local just that much more accessible.

If you miss the morning market, never fear-- Local Source will catch you up to speed with all the favourites. Produce, meats, cheese, syrup and all the rest of it... this place has you covered. With the sweet and wholesome vibes and a great space, the shopping experience is nothing but rewarding.

Fresh lunch time offerings are also a hit. Salads are crisp, sandwiches are plush, and coffee is local goodness. Why not branch outside the traditional grocery realms and support our local providers. Its an easy way to give yourself a pat on the back, as well as a satisfied tummy.

    Enjoy!

Stumbling upon this market in North-End Halifax is a pleasant surprise.  Local Source is a small retail outlet for locally-sourced (duh) produce, meat, and cheese, in addition to being a small restaurant and takeout for prepared foods.

The shop's website says that their goals are to "sustain a vibrant local food economy and connect urban dwellers with rural communities."  And it's true that buying locally minimizes waste in food production, transportation, and packaging.

Worthy goals.  Fortunately, it also happens to be a great little spot to grab a bite to eat, or to get something to take home and cook for dinner that evening

The first time I went hunting for Local Source, I couldn't find it.  It's a hidden gem on Charles just off of Agrigola.   The second time I went in, there wasn't really very much to buy.  But third time is the lucky charm (it's also been open for quite a while now so things are really running like a well oiled machine).

I've often moaned about the fact that other than on Saturday mornings at the farmers market, it's a challenge to find any fresh organic, free range, grass fed, artisan....you get the picture other than some at Pete's Frootique.

Now I don't have to whine.  Local Source does exactly that.  I can get my favorite Ran-Cher cheeses,  local farm fresh, free run eggs, whatever the season in produce - this week there were those huge gorgeous garlic bulbs, squashes and lots of hearty greens in the fridge.

And occasionally, they even put on a dinner or Sunday brunch all showcasing local talent and locally grown ingredients.   Quite the treasure.,

The Local Source Market is very hidden. The sign blends in with the brick outside making it hard to find. So I will give you a hint. Dave's Bottle exchange is right across the street.

Now , this store I have read about and was even asked about by someone in BC. So I felt I needed to go and see what all the hype was.

Now a days we Eat Local, See Local, Be Local, it is the way to support your fellow entrepreneurs.
This place lives up to all I have read and heard. The staff is very nice, and when I walked in was greeted with a smile.

I was stuck by a fabulous smell, it was the freshly baked loaf of organic artisan bread. Well, I bought one loaf of bread (it was still warm) one package of bacon, and one tub of the the Soyamaze miso & red pepper dip (recommended by Liz), thank you for that, it really is a taste of Heaven.
Oh yes, some really cool carrots, yellow and purple. They had a really nice looking croissant on the counter, with chocolate, that is for another day.
This is a great store and a real find.

Does any one remember when this was a rat infested stinking hole in the ground at one time? No? It was an Asian food place that was shut down by the health board in early '00's due pest infestation.
Guess what. Local Source  IS infested with rats. A friend of mine works there and she says she can barely stand it...there are rats behind the very wall where people SIT AND EAT! Not only that she was bit when taking out the garbage which they pile up behind the mentioned wall FOR WEEKS. Ask them to slide open that wall...seriously. It's very thinly disguised as a wall, but it's a garbage closet. Once when my friend started working there I went to see her & get some beef. I bought some and made stir-fry. I got sick. I showed it to my uncle who traps and hunts in NFL and found out this "beef" was actually game of some kind...moose or deer, or something. He couldn't tell for sure, but it was not beef.
Local Source is your source for botulism.

I had a great panini here the other day.  They also sell a variety of local cheeses, breads, and also some fruits and veg.
