I was a fan of this place before I stepped in, based on their name alone. See, I grew up in the 510 :). Haystack, represent! This was where I tried Steam Whistle for the first time and this is where I've been with friends to have deep conversations about absolutely nothing, while people watching. Sitting privy to the embarrassing hilarity of a woman going from patron to patron, asking what " the mod scene means to you."
I also went here on a terribly dull date, and the cheerful atmosphere of 510 was the only thing that kept me from making a really...er, long trip to the bathroom... with my purse and coat. I should try their veggie burger someday. If it isn't a dry hockey puck-stravaganza that I find in most places, I'll change the 4 to a 5 :).Listed in: F, F, D, HK, 30 Days Hath Movember, Delightful WPF

Everyone and their dog loves this place. That's cool. I've never been one to go somewhere just because 'everyone else is doing it'.
Local 510 has a lot of potential but for me, it's missing that special something that elevates it to a great place. In my mind, it is so very average. Perhaps it's one of those places that you either love or you don't. I don't love it. That's ok, because we don't have to agree on everything right?
One reviewer has called the staff "painfully cool" - I guess I can see that, if painfully cool means hanging out chatting with the other staff, waltzing by the table every once in a while. Let's face it, when someone 10 years younger than me refers to me with a condescending "hun" it IS painful.
Food is expensive for what you get, and doesn't blow my mind. A friend RAVES about their tacos so I try them and find them really really bland. The jambalaya makes me want to cry, it is ALSO painful. Calgary IS changing into a city with great food and truthfully, I expect more from a place like this that just has so damn much potential.
Local 510 will be one of those places that I go when someone else suggests it but won't ever be at the top of my list. It's ok, maybe I truly DON'T get it.

A friend suggested that we come here for drinks on a Friday night. Being Thanksgiving weekend I figured things to be moderately dead. Local 510 was rockin' though. It was packed, but not uncomfortably full. There was a good number of people but you didn't get jostled around constantly with people trying to get to the bar.
The bar staff were great and quick on the pour. The music was good with a DJ stashed in the corner of the bar mixing it up. The music wasn't crazy loud either which was nice. My friend and I could still have a conversation without having to strain.

Review from Arc P.
Talking with fellow yelpers I understand that the experience might be different here when it gets busy; however, I really enjoyed my time here. I found myself here on Thursday afternoon coming home from work.
I had a BigRock Trad with Sausage Mac and Cheese. The trad was pretty standard, but the mac and cheese was excellent. I enjoyed how it wasn't too cheesy to allow you enjoy the flavor of the sausage. Unfortunately, it wasn't cheap at a pricey $13+. But the happy hour price of BigRock for $5.10 (fitting) made the entire meal's price easier to swallow. That being said you can get similar levels of quality and price for a little cheaper nearby.
There really isn't much signage on this place save the carvings below eye level on the panels that enclose the patio. It's very easy to walk by the establishment if you aren't careful.
I am a fan of 510 and would recommend it to others. -
Review from Wendy P.
I've become a fan of Local 510. My previous experience was sometime last year, on a Saturday night. It was alright, but it wasn't my favourite. Although, most busy, crowded places on a Saturday night aren't my favourite. I'm big on conversation while I'm out. Local 510, however, rocks my socks off at other times of the day/week.
The absolute best time to visit them, I think, is on a sunny afternoon for the patio that stretches from out front to all the way around the side. People hang out with laptops and books or with their friends in the shade, sipping on a nice cold beer and nibbling on a panini or an appy. I tell ya, it's the perfect hideaway. Don't be looking for any plugins, you'll be relying on whatever battery power you have if you're planning on working a little bit. But if you can get a couple of hours out of it, you've got a good idea of when your friends should come join you for the afternoon.
Patio tip: The front patio is great if you want to sit in the sun, but that won't stop some of the 17th Ave peddlers from asking you for some change. I had one of them do this right over top of the patio ledge when I was there for lunch last week. If you stick to the side, you won't get the sun, but it's much quieter.
Happy hour specials include domestic beer for $5.10. Get it? Local 510, beer is $5.10? Yeah, yeah, ok. Enough Captain Obvious, right?
At any rate, go for some specials if you can, the prices are a little higher than most pubs, but the fare is also just a smidge fancier than your normal pub food.Listed in: Places to go in the Beltline, The Red Mile, Calgary Happy Hours, Calgary's Best Patios

The drink prices are not great, the service is okay, and I'm not so sure I like the layout of the place, but they put on some great shows here! Especially good memories of many afternoon shows (Saturdays, Sundays ...)
You can sometimes get corndogs for $1 apiece on Sunday afternoons too! So good.
I really like the look of the pub too. Nice hardwood, cool lights. It's nice.
You will definitely find me here on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon from time to time. -

Local 510 is really, really good.
I don't open restaurants, but if I did, I'd do it exactly like Local 510. Although I'd have a hard time getting it as good as Local 510 does it.
The ambience and decor are great, the food is amazing, the Caesars are spicy, and they have weekly specials that don't suck. I can't recommend any specific menu items, because everything I've had has been great. What I can say is that they recently introduced nachoes to the menu, and they are wonderfully cheesy and layered: not at all like the shitty single layer of burnt Kraft slices you get at other pubs.
I recently had my birthday party here with 20+ people, we were treated amazingly and everyone was happy.
The place gets busy after 9PM on Friday and Saturdays. If the weather is good, expect a line. Weekday lunches are almost never busy (in my experience), so if you work closeby it's worth the trip. -

I wasn't expecting much when I first went to Local 510, but now over a year later, I have to admit I love this place.
The patio is pretty big, with a great style and comfy seats. It is great to just chill on in the summer and gradually get drunk without knowing it. In the colder months the inside is a nice bar with a lot of wood and a welcoming atmosphere.
The food, I am happy to say, is top notch. Great burgers, awesome appetizers. You can't go wrong. They also have a great tap selection and all sorts of happy hour deals.
I say go here.Listed in: Top Restaurants, Best Happy Hour

ok i finally had a chance to return to this place to update my review and let me just say I am so glad I did. First of all you have a suave interior, you expect a chalet interior but you get a streamlined bar ambiance with sleek wooden interiors and great archetectural details.
The staff is both charming and attractive and the men tending the bar don more tribal jewelry than the women clients that come.
The exterior wrap around patio is clad with outside heating lamps and great comfortable faux leather upholstered booths.
The best part of this joint and dare I give it away is Tuesdays. All appys are $7.00 and not just regular apps neither.. we are talking mussels and brie, wings and ribs all with 5 star presentations. And Ricards light for $4... wow... See you next Tuesday?1 Previous Review: Show all »

So apparently, according to my friends, I "always" want to go to Local 510. They call it "my bar." Because I always suggest it.
Local 510 is just awesome. A lot of 17th Ave bars are filled with drunk 18-year-olds and there's nothing wrong with that, but when you're not a drunk 18-year-old anymore, it's kind of nice to go somewhere where there is a slightly older and calmer crowd.
The music is always fantastic, the food is tasty and the beer is pretty good. I think they could up their tap selection if they wanted to move into the next level of awesome, but I'm happy with Grasshopper when I go there.
All in all, Local 510 is great for a night with friends or lunch...or dinner. It's loud and busy, but not too loud. The service is friendly and the space is cool looking and clean (for a bar). The line up starts after 10, so even getting there half an hour earlier makes the difference between waiting in line and not waiting.
Also, hipsters. Lots of hipsters. But let's be honest, that's my crowd. -

Great music, great food, decent selection of beer on tap. The design of the space is very modern, and a nice change of pace from the typical pub/bar decor in Calgary. If you go, get the meatloaf - very nicely done.
The place gets packed on Friday/Sat nights, but is more mellow if you go early. If it's cold out, beware the tables by the front window - you'll freeze your arse off! -

Food is miraculous, service is humble and tidy.
Great Flare on pub fare, with a great non-pretentious atmosphere.

5 things you need to know about Local 510:
5. The patio is great and usually pretty empty on weekdays for lunch.
4. The staff are friendly and helpful while also almost painfully cool.
3. Rumor has it, one of the staff's mothers makes the dessert every day (one type of pie, one type of cake). I can't confirm this, but I can confirm reports of it always being delicious.
2. The cocktails aren't cheap, but they're delicious and fresh. They do a pretty tasty Moscow Mule.
1. The meatloaf will make you cry.
Add all of these things up and you've got a place you'll visit often, whether it's for a quick bite or Friday evening fun.Listed in: Friday Calgary Cocktails

I'm a sucker for any joint that's got a great summer patio. Enter Local 510.
Not ONLY is this place located on 17th Ave, but it's got one of the greatest patios on the strip.
With a Wild West inspired interior, and staff that is as friendly as they are accommodating, Local 510 is as great a place to people-watch as it is a place for a casual night out.
They offer a great mix of traditional and modern pub fare, along with refreshing drinks to keep you hydrated as you spend hour after hour (after hour in my case) on their perfect patio.
Enjoy! -

This is a perfect pub. Great design, amazing food, decent prices, and a wicked patio set-up. And it's on 17th, which makes it great for people watching.
I was there the other day for a lunch meeting and had the steak sandwich. I was really surprised when it arrived, since it was far from ordinary. A perfect sized steak for lunch (prob 6oz) that was actually cooked to my liking (rare - which can be hard with most sandwich steaks) with a tomato coulis on top - great plate presentation. My Caesar salad even had their own touch with a home-made dressing and kalamata olives in it, which was a welcomed addition. My friend had the butter chicken, which also had a unique presentation and plenty of naan bread. Both of them were only $12.
I hear that they also have a DJ on Saturday nights, so I will have to check it out for the after hours experience. -

Local 510 was an absolute gem when it first opened. It was still in the stages of recognition and not too many people knew about it despite its amazing location on 4th Street and 17th Avenue. It kind of felt like an upscale Ship & Anchor because it overlooked the street making it great for people watching, but instead of splintery benches you had luxe black vinyl booths and stools.
They always have great DJ's that rotate throughout the evenings or weekends making it a great place to go to listen to music, but not to dance. There food is great. The menu is super simple but they do it really well. Sometimes you just feel like having a cone of sweet potato fries and side of garlic aoili -- they do it just right. I have also tried the Butter Chicken a couple of times which was delicious.
If you don't feel like drinking when you head there (they have a great selection of beers, ciders, and cocktails) they have french pressed coffee which is such a treat to enjoy on a warm summers evening.
I think the only drawback for Local 510 now is how busy it is. Last time I went there I almost had to wait in line (luckily my friend was waiting for me) and then line was quite long. Once we were inside there was nowhere to sit so we ended up standing for awhile. Not to mention we could hardly have a conversation. I think for a bar that is so loud they should have room for dancing because otherwise you just have a bunch of people standing in a room with really loud music.
In the summertime they have live music which is cool, but I definitely want to check out Local 522 which is there counterpart closer to Eau Claire which showcases live music almost regularly -- particularly catering to those interested in folk and roots music. -

How awesome is it that the address of the bar actually doubles as its name? Right... pretty awesome! You'll never be able to get lost heading to this place, located between 4th and 5th Street on 17th Avenue.
Formerly known as Lucky's Bar, 510 opened fairly recently to an older crowd of people. It would seem that most people in the bar were late 20's, early 30's. It's one of those places that you see in the movies and think, "Where the heck are these places?" Well, this is one of them. This is a great place for the slightly older crowd to drink and party without the obnoxious behaviour of the other (younger) clubs.
510 definitely has an interesting atmosphere to it. The place is covered in wood slates, giving it a somewhat rustic feel. Their most prized wooden piece has got to be the giant slab of wood acting as a table in the upstairs area. And I mean GIANT! It takes up the whole upper level and would be great for a large or private party... assuming they would close off upstairs to a private party.
Friday seemed to be a popular place for minglers and people-watchers. Even when the place is busy they are able to offer quick service from one of their many waitresses, or from one of their two bars. One takes over upstairs and the other is downstairs right when you walk in.
One of my favourite things about 510 is the DJ they have Thursday nights and Friday during happy hour. His name is Walter and he used to DJ at the Den, Broken City, and some nights on CJSW. He's a super friendly guy who is able to strike up a conversation with anyone! If you want to hear a song, just give him the request and I'm sure he'd play it for you. Don't be shy, he's the sweetest man!
They've also got a pretty big patio area to enjoy the summer evenings. It stretches almost all the way around the bar and has a nice little covering to shelter from rain (or even snow) on the cooler nights.
510 wouldn't necessarily be my top choice for partying on a Friday night, but I wouldn't hate paying it another visit for some drinks with friends... or just to visit with Walter. Interesting ambience and lots of people to look at. -

What a conundrum.
I mean, how do I even describe this place. I think my fellow reviewers did it justice. But honestly, you couldn't label this place if you tried.
It's a pub. No, it's a lounge. No, it's a pub in the disguise of a lounge. Local 510. WHO ARE YOU?
It doesn't matter WHAT it is but what matters is that they've really hit on a perfect recipe for this prime location. I went there a few times over the summer and had a different experience each time. Their patio is fabulous. Comfortable. Secluded on the side and fun on the front. Their grilled salmon with tabouleh-squash salad was SO FABULOUS for $12, I was pretty shocked. Their drink prices are up there but it's hard to find a mint julep so for $10, I splurged. A Saturday night was hopping and packed so we parked ourselves upstairs being delighted to find a less busy bar there.
Yeah, this place is a conundrum and I'm okay with not figuring it out. I just like it. -
Review from Mike M.
Once upon a time, a lone man walked into a saloon, through the heavy door and into the parlour. Gimme a scotch...Craggmore, 12 years old, he says to the bartender. Make that two, he says as he notices his compadre walk in. His eyes grazed the ol' haunt he'd been too on one too many occasions. Its wooden interior and dim lighting always reminded him that warmth was never far away.
After a lingering duo of dames decided to exit , their seats were promptly snatched up. The man was impressed at how friendly the bar mistress was, he'd been to bars from kentucky to kalamazoo and the service had never been better.
His weary eyes glanced to a sign noting the $7 appetizers on Tuesday's. Although not hungry he felt compelled to get a bowl of mussels for he and his pal to share. When it arrived he'd gotten more than he bargained for, about a pound and a half of steamin mussels, dripping with the curried mayo of a land far away.
It was the best of times , it was the worst of times. Best because he knew, deep in his heart that if there were one place in the west, that he could always quench his thirst and put cheap food in his belly, a place where the people were warm and friendly, Local 510 twas it.
The worst of times simply because, it was winter, in Calgary and he wished that damn patio were open and the sun was blazing once again. -

Meh. I had a chicken sandwich, it was boring. This place needs more seating.
