Maybe it's just the clean, crisp air relieving me from my perpetual allergy-induced clogged sinuses, but everything seems to taste better in Fernie. Bread from the Loaf is no different. It's a cute little bakery, offering fresh Artisan bread and other pastries baked daily.

First, I have to say "mmmmm." Everything I've bought here so far has been totally mouthwatering. They have samples available for just about all of their breads, and they encourage you to try every single one. I bake a lot of bread at home, but my bread does not come out nearly as good as theirs (yes, I did consider getting a job there just to find out how they make it.) My favorite is the jalapeno cheese bread!! It's dense, soft, has a delicate crumb and a light, crispy exterior. The top is coated with delicious melted cheese and huge chunks of jalapenos. (Darn, now I am drooling.)

The loaf may be a little on the expensive side, large loaves being around $6-8, but that's no more expensive than what you'll find at farmers markets or other specialty shops. Definitely check them out if you're in the area.

Loaf has really great bread and pizza!  Everything else is likely excellent, but I haven't tried it yet.  The staff are very relaxed and good at what they do.  A little on the pricey side, but worth it.  The only downside is the layout of the cafe isn't the best for sitting down for a meal, but for take away or a quick snack I give it full marks.

Specialties

Everything we do starts with flour and water. What is real, honest bread? Well, we start with flour and we add water, a touch of sea salt, a little yeast and olive oil. That's it. Our all-natural bread is hand crafted using traditional methods - its not hurried along and it doesn't have "improvers", "enhancers" or any other additives. Except when we fancy throwing in some herbs, nuts, seeds or other tasty stuff. We know this back-to-basics baking makes our bread, cakes and pastries better for you, and more delicious too.

Depending on the season, what's available locally and what we fancy making on the day, we'll be baking a wide variety of breads, rolls, pastries, cakes and specialities daily. Everything is hand-made from scratch on the premises, using traditional recipes and methods, and locally sourced ingredients wherever possible.

History

Established in 2009

In the summer of 2009, after their paperwork came through, we arrived in Fernie and hit the ground running to get the bakery open in time for the winter season. In less than three months they fitted out the premises, sourced equipment, got their core team together, got all the paperwork and licenses in place and opened the doors.

The Loaf Bakery had an incredible, hectic first year of business and their ever-growing wholesale accounts pushed them to expand into a new production unit. In 2010 they were voted Fernie's 'New Business of the Year' by the Chamber of Commerce but their greatest achievement for the year was the arrival of their first Canadian baby born in July.

Meet the Business Owner: Phil G.

After visiting Fernie in 2003 (all the way from London, England) Phil Gadd, owner of The Loaf Bakery, fell in love with the area and looked for ways to reside in Fernie permanently. As an avid snowboarder and mountain biker with a young family, Phil knew that Fernie was the perfect location to start a business and also enjoy the sports and activities that the area had to offer.

With no town bakery and a community interested in healthy lifestyle choices, Phil saw the obvious gap and felt that his 'all natural' products would be a good fit for Fernie so they did their research and found that there was great potential for a wholesale and retail bakery/cafe with a clear focus on competitive prices, artisan quality, freshly made, preservative & additive free products.
