Review from Sheryl D.
I'll start by saying HB and I (HB more so) are addicted to the Shelbourne location's chicken pad thai. He used to get withdrawal tremors when we first moved to the mainland and couldn't find a Little Thai Place pad thai substitute. It's all that tangy, ketchupy goodness. This location was closer to us so HB ran over to pick up pad thai and some soup for little sick me. Actually I was really wanting fish, but their seafood soup was as close as it gets on a rainy, cold and gray Friday night in Victoria.
Unfortunately, both the seafood soup and the pad thai missed expectations. The soup tasted like tom yum goong except it was overly flavoured with fish sauce that it turned out to be this salty, briny mess. Fish sauce is traditionally used in Southeast Asian cooking so finding it in this soup is normal. What's not normal is the amount of it they put in. I also found chunks of lemongrass in it (which is not pleasant to be eaten at all), like the cook got too lazy to take the inedible herb flavouring out. It could be that's just the way they make it, but I have had the same soup in Thailand, and I can assure you that lemongrass is like what a bay leaf is in North American soups. It's meant to flavour the soup but taken out when served because it's just not meant to be eaten! I couldn't avoid it and ended up biting into one and it's horrible. They then overfilled the pad thai container so we ended up with this soggy mess. It's supposed to be a "flash-fried" noodle dish for crying out loud.
Next time, we'll go to our favorite Shelbourne branch. No surprise here with the inconsistency as all the branches have different Thai chefs. That's also the reason why they serve some dishes at some locations and not at others. I've been told their Thai chefs have different specialties.
