Review from Purdy J.
The Little Mexico Cantina is a nice little spot tucked away in the Steveston area of Richmond. It's not authentic Mexican food, but it's a great family restaurant with reasonably priced meals. I've dined here at least a dozen times and their food and service has always been very consistent and reliable.
Atmosphere: Cosy restaurant with busy decor (ex. pinatas hanging from the ceiling). The live plants inside and out are a nice touch. Their indoor seating is a little dark but they have wonderful outdoors seating with patio tables with umbrellas. It is very family friendly, every time I go there are families with small children.
Service: Friendly and kind to both adults and children. They come around to make sure everything is okay but I would have liked if they offered to refill my water more frequently.
Food: Consistent, hot and tasty food. Comes out fast. I love their burritos and tacos the best. We usually order the same thing every time. You can also get the meal dairy free (with is wonderful and still very tasty). They also have an extra hot hot sauce with habanero peppers - it's really hot and my husband loves it. Corn bread is a also delicious especially if they have just made it fresh. All guests get a small chips and salsa free upon arriving - the chips are usually fresh and the salsa is good (not the salsa that you buy from the grocery store!).
Healthy factor: The tortillas are made of white flour. There are no whole wheat, gluten free or brown rice options. Vegetables don't generally come with your meal (unless you consider tomato sauce/salsa to be vegetables).
Price: Meals average from $10-$15. The burrito was $10.95 - very reasonable and comes with 2 burritos, beans and rice.
Other:
-It's a great place to go if you don't want Seafood or feel like going to a touristy Steveston restaurant.
-I saw some people having huge margaritas... I mean huge.. it can be shared with 2 or more people. The glass was a size of a small fishbowl. -

This is a nice little place located next to a residential area of Steveston. The servers are nice and friendly and the atmosphere was relaxing on the patio.
The server said we should try the corn bread to start but I didn't realized it they charged $3 bux a pop for it! It was good tho. We ordered the chicken quesdillas and the Beef taco and enchilada combo plate. We also ordered a few sodas and margarita. The portions are ok and the quality is decent but the prices are a bit steep for what you get. -

I have gone to this restaurant for years and it always has good food and is a cozy place for dinner. Everything is really fresh and hot when you get it. Their portions were better years ago as were their prices, but it is still a great place to go for a quiet night out.

The food is tasty, the prices are good and the margaritas are fresh and yummy. I love having this place so close to home! The owners are amazingly friendly, and even though they probably can't speak a word of Spanish, the resteraunt has a great decore and theme. I love all the pinatas, especially the creepy little bear poking out of the ceiling. "Ceiling Bear is watching you...eat"
My favourite dishes here are the taco salad, the broken sombreo, the egg and potato burrito and their fresh, wonderful, can't-stop-eating it salsa.
If you're looking for an truly authentic Mexican place, this probably isn't it, hell, most places aren't! But if you want a nice, fun place to come with friends where the staff will treat you like gold, then give this place a shot. -

This place is a clever attempt at convincing the people of Richmond that this is Mexican food. Nice Try. I read every review here and was pretty excited to find a Mexican restaurant close to our house. The ambiance is actually very cozy. We got our chips and salsa and realized that they had given us some pretty stale and tasteless chips. So we weren't impressed from the start. Ok, well I am pretty open minded about mistakes. But.....we had a look at the menu and it was pretty limited for what a Mexican restaurant should have. Suffice to say, I had enchiladas (there wasn't much more on the menu that wasn't some sort of 'creation'. Their margaritas are delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed having a couple of those. Overall, we weren't impressed and probably wont be back.

You wouldn't have though it, but this Mexican restaurant is a great little gem nestled amongst all the other seafood restaurants in the area.
Especially in an Asian dominated market like Richmond, you would never have expected something authentic. However this place is family run and the dishes are all high quality and delicious.
It's a little tight in here in terms of seating so if you're with a sizable group it can get a bit snug.
This ain't tex mex, it's the real deal. -

How great!!
Finally made the long trek out to the end of Richmond... but it was in the name of good Mexican food................. oh and we were not disappointed! Promptly seated by smiling people... always a good start. Had a starter of Broken Sombrero (fried broken corn tortillas, chorizo, egg, some sort of spicy chile sauce, onions) and a main of beef enchiladas. Went all the way and had a dessert as well, Bueniullos, ice cream on a sugar tortilla, with Cajaeta sauce and icing sugar.
All was delicious, and even better, got to sample my friends dishes, Also amazing, and got to talk to to one of the owners briefly. You can feel the love!! Nice to see it busy as well. :) I'll be back. -

It's a great little place and the best Mexican eatery in this part of town. My significant other really liked it. It opened her mind and stomach to Mexican cuisine.
Once this was accomplished, it opened the door to even more options from food down south south of the border.
Now we can both enjoy Mexican food !! -

I love this place. The owners are so nice. Try the broken sombrero! It's amazing. And in the summer get your mango margarita! Delicious!

Little Mexico Cantina claims on their website:
"These are families who cook the same food as their mothers and grandmothers -- a menu is inspired by the cooking of northern Mexico and southern California."
I spent 25 years of my life in Southern California, and the food served at this restaurant resembled nothing I had ever experienced at countless Mexican restaurants throughout Southern California and other U.S. border states, such as Arizona and New Mexico.
I was pleased, however, to be served the traditionally complimentary chips and salsa, and not terribly surprised or disappointed to find the salsa uncharacteristically mild. It was comprised only of chunks of very very lightly flavored stewed tomatoes, topped with a sprig of cilantro. it was tasty and juicy.:)
My husband and I ordered the chicken fajitas and Mexican pizza. The chicken was chunky and tender, but very bland under the sauce that dressed it, which was more like the sweet and sour sauce one might find in a Chinese restaurant. A small dollop of cheese, sour cream, and "guacamole" accompanied the "fajitas," but the "guacamole" was just mashed avocado- no spices, onions, tomatoes, etc.. All in all, edible, but not worth 12.95. As for the Mexican pizza, the menu description was this:
"MEXICAN PIZZA - Best in town! 10" thin crispy crust covered with mole sauce, chorizo. Feta & Jack cheese, onions, tomatoes and sasame seeds."
What I got was thin cripsy crust topped with mole sauce, a tiny sprinkling of what actually looked like cheddar and jack cheeses, garnished with a little bit of chorizo. Completely absent were the onions, tomatoes, and sesame seeds, although, there was a sparse scattering of green onion slices across the pizza. The flavor was decent, but not at all substantial enough to be worth 10.95.
When someone that I'm thinking was the owner came by to ask, "how is everything?" i replied that i expected a bit more for my money. She just shrugged me off, mumbling something like, "this is how we've done it for years..." Later she asked if we enjoyed the chips and salsa, stating that no one serves a free appetizer. Ha. Complimentary chips n salsa are pretty much standard!
If you're looking for a very bland, slight resemblance to Mexican food, and are not that concerned about value for price, give this restaurant a try. It won't make you sick, and maybe we just ordered the wrong things.
