The Karaoke Superstar Challenge: Friday and Saturday: Get Down

If you've read a review for Lion's Head by Jill, Ellie or L-A, you've understood that it really is the karaoke that makes the Lion's Head spectacular. So rather than discuss the EPIC (a word I do not use lightly) selection of music, I'll talk about some of my experiences in the hopes of enticing you to visit and complete The Karaoke Superstar Challenge.

The first vivd memory of Lion's Head karaoke would be the Friday night Guerilla Gayfare Halifax "took over" the bar from the usual crowd. Poor souls didn't know what hit them. Picture a swath of gays, all clad in yellow, clamouring to sing for the patrons. It was a beautiful thing. Naturally, I signed up for one of my signature karaoke numbers, "Bitch" by Meredith Brooks. The tavern was so crowded that night when I asked the karaoke master where I was in the queue, he just said to come back tomorrow. I was devastated, slung my scarf over my shoulder and said I wasn't bothered. I forgot my pain in an instant because a group got up to sing "Proud Mary" and it brought the house down.

My other vivid memory of belting out some tunes happened on a Saturday with some friends celebrating a birthday. I was at home and not exactly feeling up to scratch but I was barraged with texts to grace the Lion's Head with my presence. My reply was, "Sign me up for Walking in Memphis. Be there in ten". I find that it takes a special kind of audience to appreciate amateurs singing songs far beyond their grasp every week but the Lion's Head never fails to deliver. Oh sure, I love the superficial attention I get from an audience but deep down, deep deep DEEP in the icy caverns of my heart, below the desire to pop balloons at a state fair, I like the encouragement you get from strangers. We're all there to have a good time and indulge our private fantasy of being a Broadway or rock star, and there's no judgement.

Unless you sing "Mustang Sally". Then you're dead to me.

nice metro neighborhood bar and resturant.   Good selection of beers on tap and friendly staff.

Overall a very nice find without haveing to navigate yourway to the waterfront.

My local. Cosy pub decor and typical bar menu.
It was wing night so I tried them for a change. I ordered hot, sauce on, as I have at I bet 40 other places. These were EXTREME hot.
At many wing places if you order hot the server will advise you if them make them very hot; they did not.
I will not order them again; I will stick with the usual hot turkey I guess.

This neighbourhood gem is entirely welcoming to those who find themselves paint-speckled of an Easter Sunday, as well as, as I've heard, those who're wearing sparkly shoes and ready to sing late in the post-meridian.

The food is entirely solid, from a respectable Eggs Benny (the eggs just past runny, but not as pale and flaky yolked as many a restauant brekkie) to a delish hot turkey sarnie at the lunch hour.

The beer is cold and sweet, with a decent variety on tap. Just skip the coffee unless you have a taste for cigarette ash.

Best non-downtown pub on the peninsula.  An unpretentious mix of military folks, local office workers, neighbourhood folks and slo-pitch teams all know what time it is....it's Lion's Head time.  Grownup bar staff that remember your order, a decent beer or two on tap and prices that are everyday affordable.  The menu's traditional and you really should stick to the basics:  Fish and Chips, Club, Steak.  You're on crack if you order the salad.....it's not that kind of a place.  Great spot.....you should go.

L-A, I have eaten at the Lion's Head--in addition to partaking in the epic karaoke, which is definitely their best offering. Food isn't the best in the city, but it's cheap and pretty good, and goes down well with a pitcher of beer. Almost as good as the weekend karaoke: wing night!

Karaoke is what makes this place fantastic. A lively crowd of devoted regulars show up every Friday night to perform, and some of them are actually good! The nachos are average and the drinks are simple, but come with a big group of friends and you'll have a blast. And if you're friends try to get you to sing against your will, just hide out in the back room and play a few rounds of pool - works every time.

The Lion's Head Tavern and Grill is an old favourite of those in the North End of Halifax.  The Lion's Head occupies a prime piece of real estate that opens both onto Robie and Young St.  There's a lovely patio that gets the late afternoon sun when the weather's right.  The traffic can sometimes be a bit much, but you get that downtown as well.

The Lion's Head serves up traditional Maritime tavern food:  liver, porkchops, the occasional steak and some pasta offerings.   Salads are in short supply and are pretty much what you'd expect from a tavern that emphasizes meat over greens.

The ambience inside the Lion's Head is a throwback:  lots of wood booths and brass lighting.  The staff are attentive;  all in all, The Lion's Head is somewhere that everyone should experience at least once.

The Lion's Head was a last minute twist to my night that left lasting impressions. I was ready to settle in for the evening when a super fun text message steered me otherwise. A few out of towners and some good old fashioned kareoke- how could i resist? And with a brief  bout of primping, I was out the door and on my way.

The LH is a pretty spacious spot with full bodied seating arrangements, a corner stage and divided rooms for sipping. Heavily wooded and adorned with trophy type decor, its as if we've come to a small town's most commonly frequented retreat.

The crowd was sparse, and few and far between. A quad of younger gals had their songs picked and names listed far before we even arrived. Older folks who come and live the dream seem to be the core audience, and I'm not complaining. The actual list of song options was very impressive. From The Animals to Bowie to early 90's R&B babe, Aaliyah... there are both opportunities to partake in nostalgia or the present.

I did not get up to the stage, but enjoyed a few friends give riveting performances. The crowd seems supportive and enthusiastic, and I'll have to get a song prepared for next time.

Friendly staff and a cosy, small town feel. Lion's Head is nice change from the regular.

I have no idea what the food is like at the Lion's Head. I go there for the karaoke and just that.  Honestly, the karaoke at this joint is a cornucopia of awesomeness. The regulars are fantastic and are supportive of everyone who gets up to sing - even if you suck. People will dance to your karaoke! The wait staff are great and it just might be the best way to spend your Friday or Saturday night.

Lions Head Tavern has great wings. It is your typical tavern, although I know it has Karaoke night. It is quite entertaining. I have witness some rising starts.

It is a great place to go and have a few drinks with friends. It is pretty large inside, I have also been there for birthday parties.

Lions Head - located on Robie Street the Lions Head has been a hot stop for the North endears for many years. Summer time the deck is hopping from lunch to close especially when it is nice out, it would be interesting to know how many pictures of draft they go through There are many summer nights that when you go there the baseball teams are celebrating a victory or even sometimes a loss but by the end of the night they really don't care.

A large seating area houses both tables and booths and reservations are as well a good thing, especially on a Friday if you are going with a large crowd. Often when you walk in there is someone that you know either sitting at the bar or playing a game of pool. Friday nights are always packed at the Lions head as it is Karaoke night. I am sometimes found there doing what I feel is singing up a storm.

Not only is the food great the service is always good and with a friendly hello. Normally when I go I like to get either hot wings as I am a spice freak or if I am doing a supper meal something like the hot turkey with fries for $8.95. Oh and the potato skins are some of the best I have tasted around town. As well each day there are specials posted outside on the sign.

So come on bye and sing a song some Friday night maybe we can do a duet.

I have eaten here many times over at least 25 years! You have to be doing something right to stay in this business in Halifax for such a long time. This is your typical maritime tavern, good specials at a reasonable prices are what you should expect. Service has always been good. Worth a stop for a cold one for sure. recommended
