I LOVE the young dorky staff! They're cute but maybe it's simply because I'm somewhat young and definitely dorky. And it's cool to not have to feel embarrassed to be renting dumb shit that I'd normally shun (read: Battlestar Gallactica).
That aside, Limelight is my neighbourhood video store and I am so relieved that it is, considering I could be stuck with the gag-worthy sight of Blockbuster or the crazy prices of Rogers instead. The selection is amazing for a relatively small space, and they do their best to keep a huge and well-rounded foreign section. The prices aren't bad and the 5 movies-5 days deal is one to be taken advantage of if, like me, snuggling up in bed on winter nights is far more tempting than trekking downtown for overpriced drinks.
It's never very busy which gives me anxiety that they won't survive this age of downloading, but there's a selfish plus in that for me that what I'm looking for is rarely rented.
And who doesn't want a video store situated beside a cafe pumping out the best cinnamon buns in Vancouver (vegan without the icing!)

Ooooo. Should I give Limelight five stars? Ummmmm, not quite. It's pretty small, and the young, dorky staff can be annoying.
I love Limelight though. I took several Film classes during my time at UBC and Limelight never let me down when I was searching for those elusive IRA-and-Mexican-related films (can you guess which Film classes I took?).
I would like to stress that Limelight is not a specialty video store. They have an amazing selection of obscure films, but they also have a good 'New Releases' section upon which they depend for steady business.
Try Limelight before expensive Video Matica or teeny Black Dog (although I looove Black Dog...heh heh).
If you're looking for something ultra specific, Limelight Video will likely be able to fill the niche.
With sections dedicated to directors, countries, and foreign languages, the store houses more than 25,000 titles. The staff is always helpful, just don't be deterred by the attitude with waivers from aloof to indifferent.
Expect to find plenty of British film and tv, Canadian films, and plenty of independent movies. That being said, you'll also be able to find the big commercial new releases here. And for those still on VHS, this place will sustain you with movies for a few years yet.
