Review from Andrew P.
It feels strange to review a building, but since I have spent probably 1/8th of my life between its walls... I feel I have to.
Yes, the LSC is almost entirely concrete. Few windows. A labyrinth of tunnels and hallways that would trick even the best inner Theseus. However you can get a varied experience depending on the floor you are on (seriously) in the Bio wing where I spent much of that time.
So here, for the first time, I will give you the insider Scoop floor by floor...
Floor 1 (Really the Basement): Nothing down here but the aquatron, supply closets, and a couple of sorry lab/offices. Rumor has it that there exists a secret tunnel that connects the LSC all the way to the Tupper medical building......
Floor 2 (Not quite basement, not quite the first floor) Really the best floor for those visiting. The McCulloch Museum with its stuffed birds, ceramic mushrooms, and often mislabeled insect and bone collection has a special place in my heart from my early years of an Undergraduate. It is also the only really public place to view fish aquaria. The next stop could be the main biology office, where the secretaries are always friendly, or the touch tanks resembling assorted marine habitats outside the museum. There is also a very busy Tim Hortons on this level. The second floor is also the gateway to the nearby Chemistry building, library, and Chase mathematics building. But beware, any rain and the skylights leak... Do not use the bathroom on this level, it is way too busy. The water fountains are also warm with low flow.
Floor 3 (Lobby): This floor has the LSC's 'food court'. I am a big fan of the pizza at Pizza Pizza and the cheeseburger at The Grill. This floor is the main floor that you would enter from the front, and connects to the Oceanography wing. Water fountain and bathroom are no good here either.
Floor 4: Bio offices and labs, nothing of note.
Floor 5: Home of the Biology lounge. Frequent departmental events happen here. During the day it is populated by undergrads sleeping/doing homework. At night the students are replaced by mice that run around your feet.
Floor 6: Home of the best men's bathrooms in the building (with no peek-a-boo gaps in the doors). Sadly , I have heard that the women's bathroom is the opposite. It also has, in my opinion, the best water fountain that is cold with good flow.
Floor 7: Large plants and a decent peek-a-boo men's bathroom and a good water fountain.
Floor 8: The floor of the administrative offices. The 8th floor also has the greatest view of the entire campus and looks out to the ocean. If you are having lunch at our fair campus, this is where I would recommend. This floor also has the greenhouse, which I have been told is available on appointment to the public.
Please, come on down and make your own adventure! You never know what you might find! -
Review from Kirk F.
My least favourite building at Dalhousie.
Could it be the lack of public water fountains? [There is one, it's just hidden]
Might it be the winding, never-ending labyrinthine hallways?
What about the cold, unfriendly stone facade, both inside and out?
Possibly the lack of wifi for doing schoolwork between classes or the lack of power outlets for laptops?
...Well, actually, yes, I guess it is kind of all those things too.
But it's the seats I really hate. Oh! Those cruel unmercifully rigid plastic frames that are too close together forcing you to do a weird shimmy down the aisle to get to your seat. Horribly uncomfortable.
There is hope! some rooms have been renovated with much more comfortable seating. Hurrah! However, despite the innovation of making seats that people actually want to spend hours in, Dal has failed to consider the needs of today's students. For 12 - 14 seats, there is one power outlet with two plugs.
...
Seriously?
Seriously.
You just spent what I'm sure is a ridiculous amount of money on renovations and you didn't think to install more than one power outlet for every 12-14 seats? Really? ... I can't even continue to express my belief just because... Seriously!?
Oh and the Tim Hortons kinda sucks too; too busy, too many kids from the grammar school and the hours need to improve.Listed in: Dal
