This is a review for the hair salon, not the spa.

This was my second visit to Life Salon and it was even better than the last. The hot towel, the scalp massage, the smells, mmm. The service there is great and the stylists are very helpful. They even touched up my makeup after my hair was finished!

I've only ever had a single haircut at Life. Right after one of their stylists won 'Best Of' in The Coast, I immediately booked and figured it would be a revolutionary appointment that would change my hair forever.

Hey - I was fickle and optimistic back then. Now I'm just fickle and realistic.

Anyhow, the appointment was fine. I don't think my stylist said more than four words to me the entire time. She did do a nice job on the cut but nothing too groundbreaking, creative, or different than I've had anywhere else. I probably would have liked it more without the stand-offishness.

Where I'd say the salon does win some serious bonus points though is in the scalp massage department. During the shampoo of my appointment, she really did a spectacular massage treatment instead of just whipping me through. Better than any other salon I've visited in the city, actually!

This is a review for the hair salon, not the spa.

I've tried many different salons in HRM, and Life Salonspa is my favourite to date. I love the smell when you walk in, I find it very soothing. After you check in, they offer you tea or water often flavored with lemon or different fruits.

I've always loved my haircuts from LifeSalon, I have extremely curly hair, but I often wear it straight and they are able to cut it so it looks good either way. My favourite parts of the experience is the hand massage they offer complimentary, and while they let the conditioner sit, they wrap your head in a warm steamed towel, so soothing and comforting.

Yes this salon is one of the more expensive ones in town, but I feel like it's worth the price.

I made an appointment for a cut on May 13th 2011 and got in that day. Before I booked the appointment I called to confirm they had a curly hair specialist on staff, they confirmed. I thought "Great" when I arrived I explained to the stylist that the best way to cut and style my hair was to wash-blow out first then straight iron and cut LAST. Obviously she was dyslexic and insisted the cut should be done before the wash and proceeded to flat iron.

Since I'm half afro american I know after 35 years how to cut and style my hair, but I decided to let her try it her way. BAD idea. I left with half of my hair on their floor.

I don't recommend this salon if you have afro american hair unless they hire a Afro American (Canadian) stylist. Just my 2 cents and $50

Great stylists, delicious-smelling Aveda products, and a super location.

Better for hair and makeup than for pedicures and the like... it's often a bit chilly in winter.

The tea they give you while you wait is almost worth the visit on its own.

I booked a massage here, I am a traveler and enjoy massages all over the world.
This was the absolute worst massage I ever had, it was horrible from start to finish. The therapist was so unprofessional, no spa etiquette at all from her long fingernails to not knocking upon reentering the room to the scalding hot towel she placed on my freezing back.
I have contacted the owner/manager and they seemed surprised and not helpful, rude even.
I also contacted Aveda, since their name is lent to this place, they were not helpful either.

I was in town and desperately needed a trim so I went in to the Life Salon. I'm generally not too picky - I'm one of those people that will get a "proper" haircut every 6-8 months and just let it grow out in between since I have long layers. I walked in because I noticed they are an Aveda affiliate salon and was immediately booked for Emma.

She was very friendly and nice. She started the session discussing what I would like to do with my hair and then gave me a lovely head massage before cutting and styling  my hair. She listened to what I wanted, offered helpful suggestions and was very professional.

Could I have had the same haircut anywhere else in Canada? Probably, but Emma was very lovely and that's what made it an enjoyable experience. I don't know when I'll ever be in Halifax needing a haircut, but if the time arises, I'll head back to the Life Salon.

Life Spa's ties to Aveda is what initiated my first visit to this downtown spot.  And from my own encounters, Life is in deep with the Aveda philosophy and easily embodies the brand's "bio-holistic" logistics.

Enter Life, and it appears as a well stocked storefront of Aveda product. The spectrum of the brand fills the shelves, and a sales person is there to answer questions and advise. The actual spa and salon is beyond a doorway behind the counter. A little more private and a little less chaos, the disconnect from shopping and salon is a nice idea.

The salon itself is suave and urban chic. This is a place of savvy professionals with the overall holistic esthetic to their work. Spa services fall into the category of natureopathic luxe, as everything incorporates elements of Ayurveda, aromatherapy, natural elements and techniques with an overall regard for energy and wellness.

The wide range of facials, body wraps, massages and relaxation treatments serve their purpose for both the mind and body. From Reiki to Reflexology, Life is a holistic hotbed that ranks at the top of its class. I've tried the Reflexology here, and while its not something I could indulge in regularly, I wish I could. There are so many wonderful treatments here for those who can afford it.

In the last month or so I had been thinking about a pretty dramatic change in the hair department... I checked the Lifesalon website and found: Connie. The website specified that she had training in 'advanced foil placement' as well as a preference for making funky unwearable ideas, wearable for the average person. (Ie: someone who doesn't necessarily want to go the green hair route but wants a unique look nonetheless)

I made my appointment for this past Tuesday and was I ever impressed! Connie did a great job of channeling my idea of going from light brown (with honey blond streaks) to a cool brunette with violet/red streaks. The streaks are very subtle and I love it! I can now face the prospect of turning a translucent pale/white colour over the course of winter without looking completely washed out.

I highly recommend you book an appointment with Connie! She's very relatable and friendly but not in an overt way. ie: talkative but allowed for comfortable silences too. She was very encouraging of my dramatic change too and really took to heart my requests/specifications. I'll be back to Life Salonspa for my next hair chance up that's for sure!

I'm a difficult customer when it comes to salons. I like my stylists smart, skilled and silent, unless they have something to talk about besides hair. And I've experienced both the bad (oh, please be quiet) and the good (ahh, nice head massage) at Life.

In general, the place probably falls more toward the good end of the salon experience than the bad. They have some really talented hairstylists, and they go the extra distance with the warm towels and scalp massages, which can be delightful.

And regardless of whether you "click" with your stylist or not, you're pretty much guaranteed to come out with a cut and style that you're happy with - there are no duds in terms of talent on staff here.

They also have a very dedicated spa team. I haven't been for a pedicure myself, but my girlfriend comes here regularly and absolutely LOVES what they do with her toes. For her, happy feet = happy girl, so thumbs up to Life for that.

I'd never yet ventured into this chichi salon until yesterday. I decided to pop in and take a look at their products, and maybe suss out their services as well.

The space is bright and spacious, with lots of natural light filtering through the large front windows. There are products for days: shampoos, conditioners, serums and lotions, curlers and sprays - so many beautifying goods!

They also carry OPI, an expensive, high quality nail polish line with some pretty jive colors. I didn't speak to anyone, as it was pretty busy and I was feeling quiet, but I tried out some hand lotion and sniffed some products. There was a strange spicy smell in the air so it was hard to distinguish specific aromas, but from what I could gather, some of the products smelled fresh and subtle.

I don't know about their ingredients, but if I'm judging based on price, space, offerings, etc. - this place is a-okay by me. I'm probably not going to buy anything from them or get my hair did anytime soon, but this seems like a nice little place if you're looking to get a fresh coif or some fancy products.

This was the first hair salon I tried out when I arrived in town this summer, as a walk in off the street on a weekday afternoon. I was able to get a cut almost immediately, which was great, and was supplied with a nice cup of tea while I waited. (I managed to fully interrupt the relaxing effect of the tea by spilling it on my lap, but I digress...)

My stylist was the sweet Sheri, who chatted with me casually throughout. I left looking cute, but my cut could have grown out better. I have lots of hair which needs thinning out to avoid the dreaded "big hair" look. This cut simply didn't... cut it.

With return visits I probably could have built up a relationship with my stylist to fix the issues specific to my cut, but I won't be going back because of the price. When taxes and tip were added in I spent almost $70 on a cut that was just so-so. In the end, my budget sent me looking for other options.

This chic salon has long been my official go-to spot for getting glamorous. I'm a frequent customer at Life, and I usually spring for the whole shebang when I venture to the salon (new 'do, facial, scalp treatment and a massage). To date, I can't recall a single time that I've left unsatisfied with my cuts and colors.

The first thing you'll notice about this spa is the commitment to quality and eye for finer details. The salon is beautifully designed; it is sleek, bright and modern and provides privacy from the hustle and bustle of Spring Garden. The front of the spa is a "beauty boutique" of sorts, stocked with a large inventory of quality products (including my favorite luxe brand,  Aveda). Venture beyond the storefront product area and you enter into a private, relaxing salon oasis. Beautifully decorated, the salon area houses an atmosphere thatprides itself on aesthetic excellence.

In terms of quality, Life's services must to be considered one of the best, if not THE BEST in metro Halifax. The friendly and skilled staff place special emphasis on providing their clients with a relaxing, wholesome experience that goes above and beyond the basic "cut and color". The stylists here are true artists that listen to your every hair need to give you a cut that perfectly suits your hair type and lifestyle (my particular stylist, Amy is fantastic: she showed me that my once troublesome hair can actually be manageable, and she's shown me that I can wear a variety of styles that I never thought I could, like sexy bobs and razored cuts). She's even suggested some very "unique" color options that I never considered before, and they turned out gorgeous and classy enough for my professional life- I had these beautiful eggplant-colored highlights, and I was stunned how professional and pretty they looked (**note: a great thing about their color is that they're feature natural ingredients that aren't as damaging to the hair as other color brands. Love that!)

For those who like that "extra something", Life offers a whole myriad of luxurious hair and skin treatments for your indulgence. I like to really pamper my hair, so I adore Life's extensive hair and scalp treatment- it's essentially a facial for your locks, and I find that it makes my hair smoother, shinier and less 'splitty' (thus requiring less frequent trims).  The glaze treatments are also a personal fave for extra shine factor.  And for bodily indulgence, Life offers a whole host of skin treatments (I really like the body wraps and facials)- and the massages are very relaxing.

Great place for a haircut!  Connie is super friendly and its nice to have a good chat with her while getting my hair done.  She is honest if she doesn't think something will work for my hair, but will listen as I point out pictures. Really I need to look like a super model to get the hairstyle I want, so she does her best to make me feel beautiful.   I really enjoy this Aveda salon!
