Review from Adam P.
Toronto, ON
I have been going to this restaurant for over 20 years (starting as a young tyke) and has been a part of our family for a long time. I have seen it go from the Atrium on Bay (when it was more upscale and elegant), to some obscure place in north Toronto, to its current place near Dufferin and Hwy 7. According to its website, it is now heading back downtown. This is great news and I will be going back more often since I am downtown as well. I have seen different types of ownership of this place and I don't know why it has such a hard time staying in business
One thing for sure is that despite the ownership changes, the food has tasted the same.
To describe the food is a little hard. To me there are two types of Chinese food; Chinese on Spadina, or the Canadian modified version (think Mandarin). This restaurant is king of a mix of the two.
They have a wide variety of dishes, but for me, I basically order all appetizer type of stuff.
The dishes that I absolutely dool over are:
Egg Rolls - these aren't the egg rolls that you picture in your head. Yes they do have a bean sprout inside, but their outside is wrapped in a think layer of egg and deep fried. This is the main reason why I go here.
Sliced Pork Tenderloin. Thick cuts of cold pork tenderloin, no fat on them and absolutely succulent
Deep Fried Won Ton with ginger Sauce - these are like the won ton's that you think of , except the bottom of the won ton has some uniquely tasting soft spot while the rest of it is crispy
Short Honey Garlic Spare Ribs - extremely small riblets (can hold between finger and thumb, with meat that falls off the bone in a honey garlic that is awesome
This is the usual stuff that i get mixed in with a main dish or two of a phoenix nest, chop suey, or cantonese chow mein.
Obviously not everyone agrees with my review, but if this place moves back downtown, I hope more people will be able to experience what I do.
