Great hang out spot! It's a bit cozy and tight inside, so it's better for singles, couples, and triplets.
The baked goods are delicious and very well-priced! I got a veggie panini and pot of tea for about $7.
Sitting by the window makes for fun people watching of shoppers on Main St. -

I randomly wandered into Liberty Bakery a few years ago and I must have looked confused, because an old lady turned to me and said, "if you want to get anything, you have to get a slice of the almond coffee cake. I've been buying it every weekend for years."
Sure enough, it was the best little slice of heaven ever. Not to mention ridiculously cheap!Listed in: I Eat Where I Live.

I can't believe I never noticed this bakery before.
It was a cold morning and the word panini and soup caught my eye. My husband and I walked into Liberty and the first thing we noticed that it was packed. The line-up was almost to the door and all the seats were taken already. Luckily a couple left after we ordered our food. We both ordered the panini and soup combo for $7 each. I had the pesto turkey and he had the ham and cheese. They were good, but a little on the small side. We both ordered the minestrone soup and I enjoyed the soup very much. It was flavorful and warmed me right up. They also advertise that all their soup is vegan. I'll definitely try their pastries next time.Listed in: Main Street Love

I often go here with one of the girls at the record store I frequent. I can't eat anything other than the colorful meringue which is awesome, however, the smell is so inviting. They have such a variety of pastries. The staff are super friendly and always giving my friends extra crackers for the soup. The prices are awesome.

The space is adorable, my daughter enjoyed her sandwich and I enjoyed my coffee
.I had a "stockholm" not sure what that is exactly and i guess i had imagined one thing and got another so I will have to return and try something else.
Great place to watch Main street go by. -

meh.. not that special. I'm kind of surprised by my fellow Yelpers' reviews.
No bread, just pastries which didn't look that spectacular. The coffee was ok, the pastries were ok, and the soup/sandwich lunch was just ok. This place reminds me of every other slightly trendy coffee shop in the city, but with no real defining features. The location is the only remotely special thing about this place. I suppose I was expecting to be blown away considering all the other reviews. -

Pastry VERY good, Sandwiches meh!, and cofee blah!
Lots of room to improve! on the coffee frontier. it seems like they just need to change the supplier. -

If you want to hang where the Main Streeters hang, this is your spot. You enter from the side alley, and immediately you're greeted by pastries, animal-shaped cookies and paninis. How inviting!
The blackboard menu is simple. Panini + small soup is around 8 bucks after tax. I chose the red pepper panini, my mate the ham one (she's the regular with certain favourites). We both had the black bean soup which is served with a hit of lime and hot green chili. Normally I'm not a fan of bean soup but this one was well balanced in flavours, quite delicious.
The sitting area is what makes Liberty Bakery super quaint. The weathered furniture lends an old town feel to the whole place. Definitely check it out, be tempted to buy a 45-cent meringue to go. -

I ADORE this quaint little place!
Vegetarian soups. A delicious selection of paninis (vegetarian and meat-filled). These two items make a perfect pair for lunch. Top it off with a mini jug of fresh iced tea (SO good) and you should be happy as a clam in no time. On your way out you might as well grab some lemon cake too!
Something to note: This place is NO LONGER CASH ONLY. They now accept debit and credit.
While you're paying for your food don't forget to help yourself to the free samples of their baked goods. They are mighty tasty. I normally don't really care for sweets, but their coffee cakes, especially the lemon cake, are just too good to pass up. -

This is an alltime favorite place of ours. We usually get the exact same things because their panini sandwiches, cookies etc are simply perfect.
A great place for a sit down lunch or an alternative to the grab 'n go sandwiches at a coffee shop etc.
You won't find a better chocolate chip cookie in the city! -

My perfect winter Sunday afternoon - after a couple of hours of cruising the vintage shops on Main Street, I'm cold, wet, and my pocketbook is light. I'm enjoying my own thoughts and the people watching, and don't really want to go somewhere loud and high energy - what to do?
Why grab a corner table at Liberty, order up their vegan hummus panini, a bowl of black bean soup and a cup of coffee and watch the world go by over the top of my novel, of course.
The sundried tomato, hummus & pine nut panini is incredible. It's just the perfect size for one, and if you dip it into the soup? Heaven. Their baked goods are delicious (I'm a HUGE fan of their pies) and they are totally reasonably priced. Plus, every month they donate whatever ends up in the tip jar to a different charity. The feel-good you get from that completely counteracts the extra cookie guilt, seriously.Listed in: The Vancouver Edition, FUC This!

I'm really impressed with Liberty. This super kitschy, cute Main Street spot has a few vegan options among their fresh-made soups, sandwiches, and baked goods. It's also got a unique and interesting atmosphere that is fresh in this city. I'll be back.

I used to live half a block from this place and I'm still not sick of it!
I haven't had something I didn't love at this place.
The only downside? THEY ONLY TAKE CASH, just fyi.
Every single thing I have had here is so good. Here are just a few of my favorites:
-the black bean and feta panini
-the chili bean and lime soup
-the coffee cake
-the hot chocolate (is real and so rich)
This bakery is cute, delicous and a great way to spend a breakfast or bunch. If you are at 21st and Main do not pass this place without at least looking at their cute decor. And once your in the door, I guarantee you won't be leaving without a delicious snack in hand.Listed in: Cheap and fast, just how I…

One of the best place to stop on Main for a coffee pick me up or some good nosh...
They have a great range of yummy sandwiches, soups, and fantastic baked goods..and as they should since they are in fact a bakery..I am a huge fan of the little lemon pound cakes....really great for a nice dessert..so good that one is only enough for maybe 4 people..if you are a piggy like me:) I do have to say that I find them a bit pricey...BUT..the food is so tasty it's worth it!
The staff are all great..so nice..stupidly nice...the other day when I was in there was a lady with a walker trying to come in..and there are stairs when you enter and she was struggling...so the guy behind the counter ran out and took her walker and he carefully helped her down the stairs and to a seat...so sweet!
Good thing to know is that they are cash only so make sure to hit up the ATM before you go!Listed in: Super Great Service., My Main Street Mainstays

On our quick little trip to Van, Main Street was one of those little heavenly bits of vacation. Totally regular looking street, with the sweetest boutique shops and this gem of a bakery.
The couple hours I spent sitting outside, drawing, drinking coffee, and eating their tasty treats was a highlight in an already fantastic vacation.
Almost everything I tried was delish (and me, not a sweets person!). The eclair was the only miss--little dry, and not the custardy filling I'd hoped for. But everything thing else we tried (and we tried a lot) was fantastic. The coffee was quite good (I think I had two...or three? americanos), and the ambiance was relaxed and comfortable.
If I lived anywhere nearby, that would be my hideout to escape from the doldrums of a long work day, or a great way to start a lazy weekend.Listed in: foodz, date night

Review from Toki M.
This cute small cafe is a great place to take a break and refuel if you've been shopping the stores on Main Street. The cafe offers a wide range of dishes and desserts along with good coffee and espresso drinks.
Highly recommended is the raspberry genoise cake, which was light and creamy and actually offered only as samples, but hopefully by this time will have become a standard item on the menu.
The eclaire was rather disappointing because the filling tasted like it was based on oil rather than real cream. The chocolatey Sacher slice was dense and not overly sweet, but I wish the cake layers were less dry.
Otherwise, service was friendly, and the weather was perfect for sitting outside and soaking up the rays. -

I usually review restaurants based on five points: food quality, service, ambience/environment, value, and that spark, je'ne-sais-quoi, that sets it apart from it's competitors. So, let's begin!
Food quality: High! Yummy baked treats you don't often see in Vancouver, such as meringues, stockholmes, palm fronds. Well-made coffee drinks. Haven't tried their soups or pannini yet, but they smell scrumptious. One star!
Service: Slow, but polite.
Ambience: The bakery is tiny and cramped, but pleasantly so. Chairs and unique tables. Quirky wall art. One star!
Value: The coffee drinks were expensive, but on par with their neighbours. Their baked goods were a deal! One star!
Spark: Yep, it's got it! Another star!
So there ya have it: 4 stars and a guarantee I'll be going back. -

this bakery is across the street from one of my fav. sushi places in vancouver - zipang. coincidence? perhaps. the magic of eating on south main? i think perhaps, yes. ::grin::
in one word: potato. a friend told me about it, and simply said, 'just get one.'
i did. yum! it's like a cupcake meets rum-ball (but w/o the rum and the chocolate) meets sour cream timbit. all good things. (unless you don't like those things. then i guess it's not).
anyway. good bakery - i'll try the scones and cookies next time, and i suspect they've got the good java here....
and like the others have said - it's not cheap, but it's not exorbitant (think, same prices as meinhardt for desserts, maybe a wee less).
and a few little outside tables, limited indoor seating.
enjoy!Listed in: Go-To Goodness

I popped into Liberty Bakery on a blustery near-winter day for something sweet to bring home to my hunny. I was immediately enveloped in the warm, delectable scents of baked goods and homemade soup. Proprietor Liberty Gustafson serves up delicious baked goods from cookies to pastries as well as a number of delectable lunch items from vegetarian and non-veg panini's and all-veg soups. I picked up a couple of chocolate-covered soft gingerbread cookies and the resounding lip-smacks from my housemates was a testament in itself! There is nothing like homemade goodies, except homemade goodies from Liberty Bakery!

I love Liberty. My 2.5 year old daughter loves it. My wife loves it. The food is great - when it's there. If you go too late, they run out of stuff. Seating is a little tight at times but generally, we don't have an issue. Lovely outdoor seating albeit a few tables only. Their pastries are tasty and very well done. Not overly sweet. For paninis, they have a splendid ham and cheese and an excellent turkey pesto. They also have vegetarian and vegan options. They always feature two soups; a vegan black bean with lime chilli and something else - when that something else is Potato Zucchini or Corn Chowder, game over - we love those soups.
Soups, I believe, are featured for 1 week and then rotated.
We've been going there for about 6 years now - use to go every weekend now...maybe once or twice a month. We slowed down a bit because we've been through 3 price increases which is understandable but their fare is no longer as affordable. Excellent quality food for the price - we just cut back on eating out a bit.
Service is always friendly though it seems they're gone through a spate of new hires and they're...very green. Since Cherry left, we've noticed a slight decline in service but that's ok. Still a lovely spot on Main to have lunch at.
Accepts Cash and Debit (finally).
