When my coworker asks me to go to lunch, she means go to Lhy Thai.

Oh, see, here is another Thai restaurant with Thai in the name. They want me to know what I am in for. So my coworker's daughter is allergic to peanuts. Wah, what is a life without peanuts? So to get her peanut fix we drive a bit to get here. Useful tip: call ahead. They do take reservations for lunch. This place is mini, so in order to get back in time, we make reservations to bypass the line up that crowds the slim hallway to get in.

We always order from the Specials Menu. I get #2 Mild (because I am a wimp) while my coworker gets it medium. #2 is green curry chicken, a spring roll, a pork satay with a big mound of rice. Plus they give you a little side of cucumber in vinegar. This is the best bang for your buck. They have other dishes for the same price... a fried rice here, a phad thai there... but I am all about value. I have had the other dishes and I feel as though I need to scrape the plate while my stick thin coworker tells me she's stuffed.

The green curry is mildy spiced (because I asked them to do that) with tons of bamboo shoots and little shreds of chicken. I could drink this like soup it's so good. I have no idea what's in green curry... I always used to get yellow, but I like this way better. The satay is a good mouthful with a thick spread of peanut sauce on it. The spring roll is really crispy with a drizzle of a dipping sauce on it.

Our waters are always refilled and the service is fast. Sometimes they get slammed and you have to wait a bit, but such is life. While their prices have gone up, they are still well below the other restos competing for your lunch time business.

For my Burnaby friends, the Penang curry is so good.  Soooo good.  I'm craving it and looking up recipes to make it myself.

Not a destination restaurant by any means, but good for take-out.  Their lunch specials seem like a great deal.

The portion sizes are pretty darn small for what they charge and for a hole in the wall.

But the Penang curry is sooo good.  Its a red curry, dashed with coconut milk, milder than most curries and sweeter.  It doesn't have bamboo shoots in it, which is a plus for me.  I got it with the chicken, nothing to complain about.  Extra charge for the coconut rice (you will need it).

On the other hand, the Pad See Ew was terrible.  Burnt noodles, bad broccoli, oily and bland.

I can't think of a reason not to give Lhy Thai 5 stars, other than I don't want it to get any busier than it already is. We'd been told by countless peeps of Thai descent that this is their favourite and most authentic. So we went. And now we are regulars.

The spring rolls, quite frankly, are to die for and may very well be the best in Vancouver. I kid you not. They are crispy and delicious, but what makes them stand out is the peppery flavour that is littered throughout the roll. When it meets up with the sweet chili sauce, magic occurs. Starting the meal this way sets you up for great success.

Everything we've had there has been excellent. I wish they had Drunken Noodles, my favourite dish (Pad Kee Mao) but they don't - and I'm okay with that, because everything is so tasty.

Also on the menu? Phat Phuk. Say it loud, say it proud. If you're reading this while sitting in the restaurant, by the time you are done giggling, they will have brought you your food and you'll forget all about the funny name. The service is that good. Last time we were in there, we ordered our spring rolls and got them 30 seconds later. It was shocking (and delicious. Did I mention they were delicious?)

I'm sure when it comes to Thai food I am not expert, but I definitely know when food tastes good.

Spring rolls were really good, however. The sauce for the spring rolls was amazing. As a typical non usual Thai eater, I ordered Pad Thai. I thought that the pad thai had a nice spice to it and the flavor overall was well infused into the dish. I also had pork stir fried with peppers and such. That pork dish was not my favourite. I wouldn't recommend it.

Overall, the food was decent. Atmosphere was cozy, but run down. Service was good and efficient.

Food was very fresh and delicious. I enjoyed the Phat Thai noodle which was very fresh, and the sweet, sour, mild spicy sauce was so tasty. I liked the deep fried bananas with mango ice cream too. I could melt warm and crispy banana with cold ice cream in my mouth together, and it was a pretty happy moment.

Prices were decent. Shrimp Phat Thai was $8.50, dessert was $3.50, and the spring rolls were $5.95.

Service was friendly but it was a little slow when they were busy.

Overall a good experience and I'd definitely go back~!

This place does not have the best value for your buck. I was there for lunch and the portions were very small, just about enough for a child. I ordered the Curry Chicken with cashews and requested it extra hot. Came back luke warm and barely hot. I needed to ask for pepper. When I was done here, I stopped off at McDonalds for a couple of burgers because I was still hungry. Not worth the money.

UPDATE OCT 2011: STAY AWAY. The quality of food has taken a serious dive in the last few months. Last 2 visits myself and friends have become very, very ill after eating here. Not going back.

    Original Post:
Cute little place in the neighborhood that was suggested by a friend, it's now a place friends and family visit almost weekly!

Tucked in between the dollar store, food market and across from Value Village, it's easy to miss this place. The locals all know about it and most of the tables have been full every time I've gone in. The decor is a little dated but that's not what you are going for, it is?

They don't deliver and I find a lot of the time their phone line is busy for take out, so be patient! Take out is usually ready in 20 minutes. When eating in the restaurant, it's not that much longer.

You can order most items on the menu with a range of spiciness of Mild, Medium, Spicy or Very Spicy.  I usually go with the Medium, that's enough of a kick for me.

Appetizers: I love the Spring rolls and stuffed chicken wings. The Tod Mon (fish cakes) are good but a little greasy. Chicken satay is kind of bland and the peanut sauce with it is ok.

Main Curry dishes: If you like it hot, go for the Red Curry (#23) you can go with either chicken, pork or beef with red Curry sauce, bamboo shoots, rend & green pepper and sweet basil - YUM!

Veggies: the Phat Phuk (various veggies in oyster sauce) Phat Spinach (spinach with garlic) and Phat Tour Ngok (bean sprouts with green onions and oyster sauce) are all great sides.

Noodles: I am a big fan of their (# 75) Phat Thai Gai...rice noodles fried with chicken, tofu, green onion, tomato sauce, bean sprouts, egg and peanuts. It's a nice side dish and for kids, it won't look like a weird food to them - they chow it down!

All the Rice dishes rock, you can't go wrong with any of them, be it for a side dish or as a main.

    Just go! You'll enjoy it!

After eating at Lhy Thai, everywhere else Thai is a pale second best.

We've tried pretty much every Thai restaurant in Vancouver. I have yet to find a restaurant that provides such exceptional food at excellent value. We are always disappointed when we try another Thai restaurant as none of them come close to Lhy Thai.

We were here again this evening. As usual, we ordered twice as much as we could eat -- we always order enough for leftovers, which are almost as tasty as it is originally.

    Here's what we usually order for two of us (from their dinner menu - the lunch menu is mainly combos);

#6 Gai Hor Bai Toey - a marinated chicken wrapped in a Teay leaf. Sometimes it is absolutely amazing, tonight a bit dry but still tasty. For appetizers, the Chicken Satay are excellent as well.
#14 Tom Kai Gai - this chicken in a hot and sour coconut soup is always amazing.
#30 Panang Goong - we love the prawns cooked in a red curry paste. Probably our favourite thing on the menu
#35 Phat Phew Wan Gai - sweet and sour chicken
#69 Pra Ram Lhong Song - a spinach stir fried and topped with a peanut sauce. Yum!
    #75 Phat Thai Gai

We always order medium spice. Not too hot, but with enough kick to let you know you're not eating mashed potatoes. We always try something new each time, but those are our favourites. Paul is the owner. His wife is always working hard in the kitchen. It is far from fancy, which you would expect from many a family owned business. Their son is often seen doing his homework at a computer desk in front of the cash register. If they are busy, you will probably find them running hard to serve everyone and service may be a bit slow. If either Paul or his wife are sick they will close for the day. We've taken groups of up to 12 people, you just have to call ahead and they will gladly rearrange the tables to suit your needs. Nothing is microwaved - it's all prepared right there. Often you will have to ask them to bring your bill at the end of the meal - I wonder if maybe they feel it's rude to bring it to your table, as if they are rushing you.

Two deserts are outstanding - the Deep Fried Banana with Mango Ice Cream (my favourite), and Coconut Ice Cream with shaved Coconut - I don't know where they get their coconut ice cream, but I've never found it anywhere else to taste as good.

If you love Thai food, I can't imagine not trying Lhy Thai.

Very nice Thai food. The staff were cheerful, and the food came quickly. No complaints. My dad and I shared the Red Curry with beef, and the Chicken Cashew- I think numbers 23 and 33. I will definitely come back.
