I love the name. It drew me here. No lie. No idea where it came from, but it reminds me of "300". To quote the epic movie,
    King Leonidas: Madness...?
    [shouting]
    King Leonidas: This is Sparta!
[Kicks the messenger down the well]

There's no well to get kicked into, but they have a huge ice cream shaped waste receptacle outside. Be kind. Don't litter. There also aren't 300 robust, wickedly ripped men ready to fight for me here... sigh.

But boy, do they make up for it...

Temptation. Temptation. Temptation. Sweets upon sweets. Lord knows I have a soft spot for chocolates... in any way, shape, or form.

Most gelato/ice cream places let you sample a flavor or two before committing, and Leonidas is no different. I settled on some chocolate gelato. Oh, it was perfect for that warm spring Sunday.

I also grabbed a box of dark chocolate truffles to go. I'm very proud of myself for not devouring them upon sight. Savor the goodness, my friends. Savor it. Or come back again! =D

Btw, the ladies here are super sweet! Like the chocolates. They would never kick me into a bottomless pit.

You know when you get a box of Black Magic or Pot Of Gold at the holidays and your bratty siblings steal all the "good" chocolates right from under your nose (by "good" I mean the chocolate orange crescent moon, the caramel square and the solid dark lady, obvs)?

If that has a tendency to happen to you, march over to Leonidas in Leslieville and drum up an order of individual chocolates that range in price from $0.80 and $1.50 each. They're all very beautifully arranged in the display case and have fancy names like "Alexander Le Grand", which incidentally was my favourite of the three dark squares that I ordered. You can order one square or a hundred, they don't care - there's no minimum. When it comes to chocolate, I'm of the opinion that the darker and more bitter, the better. Give me 99% cocoa, I'll finish it off (slowly).

These guys have been kickin' it for almost a hundred years (since 1913). Some of their stuff is kosher if that's important to you (or "coshure", as I recently read in another review). However you (mis)spell it, they're careful with their craft.

Oh, and I almost forgot the actual reason that I stepped into Leonidas: gelato. They sell it. However, the cold stuff was overshadowed by the beautiful chocolate displays so I'll have to go back to try a cone another time!

This place is very cute.  The owner takes a lot of pride in her shop and provides you with recommendations based on your taste buds.

I bought a couple of chocolates to try out and pass along to my folks.  As a milk chocolate fan, there was too much dark chocolate choice for me.

But, what I did try and like was the butter cream filled milk chocolate.  Heaven.  I don't know how many will be left for me to share!

I will go back to try the gelato.  It looked very tasty and refreshing.

I saw chocolate so I found myself here on my way to another place. Got the dark chocolate with a praline centre and hazelnut on top because it was the lady's favourite. Pretty mediocre. I wasn't impressed but based on the amount of Christmas orders she had to fill--stock pouring out all over the floor--I'm sure others would disagree with me. She seems pretty popular. The chocolate I tried didn't do it for me but perhaps another one might. Definitely worth a try.

No seriously, the chocolates are that good.

The owner seems to have a heart of gold, loves her product and gives great recommendations.   There's usually a few boxes on sale and I was told she gets shipments in from Belgium on a weekly basis to keep stock fresh.  The chocolates are delicious.

The store also sells gelatos and the website also sells chocolates online.  But you save a few bucks if you go and buy at the store, and you have a bigger selection of gift boxes to choose from.
