Review from Chrissy M.
Halifax, NS
While on my way to Adept with the bf today, we walked by and I was immediately intrigued. I am a big fan of sandwiches. I've watched the sandwich show on pbs more than once, thats how much I like them.
On our way back to the car I insisted we pop in and we both got sammich platters. I ordered a roast beef and he ordered the black forest ham. DELISH. They were so good! The bread was soft, the cheese amazing, the meat fresh and delicious!! It was served with veggie chips, a garlicky pickle spear and coleslaw. I'm generally into creamy coleslaw but this was tangy and vinegary. I've never had anything like it so I believe it was made on site.
The server working was also lovely and very quick. The man working, who I assume to be the owner, turned on a model train that runs overhead and we were delighted like 2 little kids. Simple pleasures, eh? I will definitely return! -

I cruelly popped my head into Leicester's yesterday afternoon as a preliminary scouting visit before I inevitably return and buy, you know, all the cheese. While I'm really happy that I did, it was just downright mean to come face-to-face with such a great cheese selection without the time to pick some up to take home.
Much like other businesses on Quinpool, it's tough to get a feel for the place from the outside. Inside, though, it's cozy, warm and low-lit actually giving it an upscale feel from your average Halifax deli (if such a thing even truly exists). Complete with flatscreen television mounted in the corner, Leicester's is nice enough to please pretentious cheese buyers like myself, with a few added features so the old fellas can still enjoy their fresh-cut meat sammiches while watching the news.
There was a nice selection of meals-to-go prepared in one showcase with a few soft cheese options, while the back display showed off the real goods: blue cheeses, truffle cheeses, and plenty more that could make even the most lactose intolerant start to wonder what he or she could get away with.
Since I didn't get to indulge during my first visit, I'll reserve judgement until I get to actually taste some of the food, but for now I'll just say that the selection, presentation, and warm welcome from staff was enough to make me want to come back.Listed in: Quinpoolin', 'Market'ing, New Restaurants 2011!

Unfortunately a Schwartz's smoked meat sandwich this is not, instead of a house made smoked brisket they are using a packaged product. Oh well, maybe one day an authentic Montreal smoked meat sandwich will come to Halifax. I've included a photo of half the small sandwhich...the bread's nice but it's a sad little sandwhich.
