We were delighted to find this place (Thanks to Marc). Definitely one of the better Japanese restaurants in the Richmond area.
The dinner menu is expansive; offering anything from sashimi and sushi to croquette and grilled fish.
    We tried:
Tuna sushi and scallop cone, which were delightfully fresh.
Dinner set: gomae and edamame were good but nothing spectacular.
Grilled ahi tuna: the fish was nicely cooked but the sauce didn't  really enhance the flavor of the fish. The carrots were sublimely sweet. Sweet potato was not at all greasy although it was fried. Still a good dish overall.
Bento box with tempura, sashimi, and chicken teriyaki. Well cooked and pretty generous portion.
A great neighbourhood gem with crave inducing menu and quality ingredients.

    Funny thing we noticed tonight.

Ever used the test where if you went to a Chinese restaurant that had alot of Chinese customers, then it should be a good place to eat?

Or if a Pizza shop is highly recomended by alot of Italians then it's gotta be good?

Le Nakamura was a bit of an odditiy.  We've been here quite a number of times, my Grandmother, even moreso.  This place serves sushi but is also a Yoshokuya.  Hamburger steaks, Pork tenderloin with wasabi and teriyaki and Tonkatsu or cream croquettes and salad.

Truthfully I'm not a fan of their Hamburger steak since I'm a demi glace fan and not a teriyaki red wine sauce fan, but the other stuff is pretty good.

    OK. so funny thing.
Everyone who is not Japanese is eating sushi.
The Japanese are eating the Yoshoku or something, but not sushi.

That's what we noticed on this night.

The sushi is good, the food is fresh and they know how to do things right. They've been in the business for quite some time now and before with Hananoki.

The service tonight was a bit slow, but it was quite busy.
Something they seem to have done right by being busy, since next door at Zen Cuisine, it's empty....and dark.....

    * Classic Japanese in this old fishing village *

Steveston has a long history with its Japanese community from its early days as a Japanese fishing village to the days when all of the Japanese were forced into internment camps inland to when they returned.

Le Nakamura is a newer chapter in that history.  The chef has a classical French training which certainly appears in certain offerings on the menu (for instance the rack of lamb presented in classic European style yet with a red wine teriyaki sauce).  But the bulk of the menu is classic Japanese, and executed very well.

The restaurant was packed for lunch today and about half of the customers were speaking Japanese at their table.

Things started off well when the waitress brought the tea.  It was a higher quality green tea than you get at most Japanese restaurants in the Vancouver area.  Very good first impression!

    We ordered two lunch sets.

We both had a chirashi set.  It came with a small chirashi that had an incredible fish to rice ratio.  The toppings on mine (the hana chirashi) included 3 types of salmon, tuna, tamago, ikura, and okra.  The toppings on my partner's (the tuna chirashi) were several generous large slices of bincho, and some diced tamago.

The fish was very fresh and had been cut into very small pieces for the hana chirashi (I actually like them a little bigger like on the tuna chirashi, but both worked).  On the side the set also came with a bowl of udon (the bonito broth was very flavorful and the noodles were not overcooked), some agedashi tofu which was perfectly fried so that it wasn't greasy at all and came with grated daikon, and some broccoli and spinach gomae.  The gomae had a nice sesame flavour, and was just a tad sweeter than I like - but very good.

The hana chirashi set was a very reasonable $11.95 and the tuna chirashi set was even more reasonable at $9.95.  Amazing pricing for such a superb lunch from a well trained Japanese chef.

For those that wander down from Vancouver or central Richmond - be prepared for Japanese sized portions.  For me a smaller portion with excellent quality is much more satisfying than large amounts of mediocre quality.  But consider yourself forewarned if you prefer more of an AYCE sushi style quality/quantity ratio!  I was quite full after lunch here, and I have a big appetite for what it is worth!

We definitely will be returning to try their dinner menu.  Seems they have a lot of nice options available!  We'll have to dig into some of their French influenced dishes as well to see how those are.  But it will be hard to, because the Japanese focused dishes are quite enticing!

It might be worth noting that this place is now taken over by a different owner in March/April of 2011.  It's terrible to say the least.  Not run by Japanese folks either.  New name (forget it at the moment) - but we thought we'd try it anyways.

I'd called in for reservations and they'd highly recommended I make them.. we walked in @ 6PM and the place was entirely empty and stayed empty until 7PM when we left.. about 3-4 more tables walked in.

    Stay away!

This is a limited review of their most expensive menu items only.

    Very good.

$80 for two, no alcoholic drinks.
