Marché St George succeeds on two fronts: it is the place I dash to when out-of-town guests are coming and I want to show off a true gem of Vancouver living and it is the place I shuffle to first thing in the morning when I need my coffee fix. The staff are as friendly as the exterior is unassuming and they take pleasure in serving up delicious food and hefty lattes alongside a well curated market of goodies.

Among the menu, the flatbreads are standout. They rotate the toppings each day, and serve up a large helping splayed across a marble slab. If the bacon-carmelised onion is on offer, take it!

The market features several unique finds: black garlic--a pungent, spreadable head of garlic that has a sweet, savoury roasted flavour. The cooler includes an impressive selection of cured meats and cheeses--some of the best charcuterie I have found in the city--and every Thursday, a fresh delivery of milk products from Abbotsford's Birchwood Dairy (the same dairy supplying Matchstick Coffee Roasters).

Locals and regulars can 'apply' (leave your name and phone number) for a tab, to be paid monthly. While perhaps not incredibly useful, it does at least up your cool foodie cred at this outpost of good eating.

Le Marché St. George is a charming rustic market located on St George Street / East 28th Ave (residentially between Main / Fraser). This little haven is a breath of fresh air from your daily high-street chains. There is little signage to draw you into the part café, part boutique grocer, neighbour friendly hidden-gem. Operating out from a renovated house, Le Marché St. George somewhat reminds me of something out of an Anne of Green Gables movie - an old world ambiance.

Although this little nook has limited sheepskin-lined bench seating - a small window bay and a table, and one outside bench, neighbours gather here for leisure conversations. Cozy throws and blankets are provided to keep you warm and comfortable during plummeting temperatures.

Couples cuddle together while sipping hot coffee while accompanied by their gorgeous dog. Even the rain won't stop them! It is somewhat romantic and endearing as we snapped a photo of them thru the windows. I can even envision bicycling on warm summer days to get away from the business and bringing home a fresh bouquet of flowers.

Kid friendly environment with wooden toys and books for your toddler to make adventures out of.

This boutique grocer offers a variety of goods both locally and internally sourced. Daily staples of milk and banquettes, eggs, produce, organic milk, artisan cheeses, sausages. Eiffle Tower shaped pasta, olive oil, salts (sea, butcher, and gardener), Mission Hill preserves, etc stock their pantry shelves. Virgin hand woven throws, blankets, and scarves; trinkets, perfume and even knitted goods can also be found.

When you stomach is a little empty, fuel up with homemade sandwiches, quiches, and wild mushroom risottos. Menu may vary depending on the day and is noted on their blackboard by the window. If you feel like something sweet instead, they even carry delicious macarons from Kitchening With Carly..

So how is the coffee here you ask?
Freshly made espresso beverages are available. We both tried the Americano Espresso - no need for something fancy or the annoying-skinny-this, extra-hot-that, 3-pumps-whatever, 5 minutes type of order.

The coffee served in a modest mug is anything but ordinary. It is strong, flavourful, but not acidic or sour to taste. They know what they are brewing. Hot milk is served in a small bowl. Harney & Sons Tea in a variety of flavours  readily available. I hear the Au pain chocolat is to die for!

If you were awed by the cozy café, you would be more astonished by how they transformed their home into something beyond what the exterior of the home offered.

Have been wanting to stop by for a very long time and finally popped in today. My friend and I split a chocolate ganache tart. Delicious. And I had a pain au chocolate too. Loved the flaky/buttery bread with chocolate inside and had this alongside my small hot chocolate. The drink portions were great and everything was served in different cups/mugs and plates. The staff were very friendly as well.

It is a cozy and charming place. I wish my neighbourhood had one!

Cozy antique feeling spot. Situated on a quiet friendly neighbourhood street. Only reason it looses a star is because the chocolate croissant wasn't fresh. Took if back and had a regular one instead which was ok. Im guessing the croissants were not fresh because it was 2:30pm, maybe they are better 1st thing in the morning. Mocha was good.

Wow, I really had a different idea of this place from reviews I'd read. My new impression based on an actual visit instead of a virtual view, has an emotion attached; jealousy.
Some one with a wonderful vision must have seen this corner convenience store (as I may have), and through dreamy eyes made their vision into a reality.

A cafe/gift/gourmet foods shop nestled into a residential area that somehow, like a magnet attracts people enough to have it's own energy about it. With just a couple of window seats to sit and savor a fresh pastry and drink something warm while catching up with friends or bicycle by on a warm day and stop in to pick up something from the outside baskets.
    Awesome!
I wish I could transform my corner store into a place like this.
Maybe I need to dream more.

This place is charming, the food is great, and it has a different tiny kid toddling around speaking french every time I've been, but I had to stop going here as it makes my girlfriend want to change her life and I'm not prepared to grow my own broad beans or wear chunky sweaters just yet.

Perfect little shop where you can shop for local produce, and enjoy a coffee/fresh baked treat. A little pricer than your regular market but the quality is worth it. This is a great place to go if you want to support your local peeps. My favorite item at le marche is the cured original-d sausages. Yum!

Baked goods are always extremely fresh and oh so delicious. Coffee is usually good but last time I had a latte, I felt that the coffee beans were over roasted and so it tasted a little off. Bonus: in addition to soy, they offer almond milk as an alternative. Awesome!!!

It's you one stop shop for your stapes... eggs, cheese, bread, yogurt, fruit. The seating is a little limited but a very relaxing atmosphere if you can snag a spot. Super kid friendly. They even have a basket with toys! Staff is super friendly, efficient and cheerful.

Support local businesses, eat healthy and go to Le Marche St George!

P.S. During the summer, the VanValley Buyers Club set up their produce pick up at Le Marche. Check back in spring if you want to be apart of the buyers club (it's like a produce coop. You prepay for your fruits/veggies and every week you pick up produce that is farmed locally. Every week is a surprise but it's always fresh, delicious and worth it! Great deal and you can shop at Le Marche during your pick up each week!)

I wish every business would take a page from Marché St George's book, because this shop is exactly how my romantic little brain imagines the perfect general store to be. Minimally stocked with locally-sourced and artisan wares, this tiny corner store is the best of Canadiana and French village charm.

As I sit outside on their well-worn (and much-loved) wooden slingback chairs, ant-flies whirring by and sun spots poking through the lush green leaves overhead, I can't help but wonder if this particular spot is somehow enchanted. To my left is a "Vancouver Special", straight ahead are rows of East Van homes, but behind me are the most caring and loving neighbours picking up their baskets of fresh vegetables, and to my right is a time warp that goes neither forward nor back, but away to my favourite spot in all of Vancouver.

Granted, this little place is going to cost me a bit more than an average corner store / café, but in turn I get so much more than just a tub of Birchwood yogurt or jar of Mission Hill preserves. Instead, I get to feel like I'm somewhere completely different but alongside all of my best friends I've never met.

The only not-amazing thing i have to say about this place is that it's so popular there never seems to be much room to sit!

the coffee is amazing, the staff are friendly, the baked goods are insane and the retail items look perfectly selected, though i've been too busy looking for a place to sit to peruse them.

so glad to have this place in my neighborhood.
did i mention the great coffee?

    This place is a gem.

In an area which isn't particularly pleasing to the eye (sorry, guys...an east coast gal just can't fall in love with "vancouver specials"), Le Marche St George is a little slice of beauty.

The products are a bit on the pricey side, I'll be honest, but the shop is so lovely and quaint (and yes, a little hipster), that I wanted to purchase something just to support the business. That's a little odd, I know.

The market portion itself sells a wide variety of both locally sourced & international goodies, and the selection definitely varies from what you see at bigger , standard grocery store, which is nice.

The cafe part of is lovely, too, with all of the tables and chairs inside and out, filled up by the neighbourhood patrons sipping their cappucinos and nomming on the awesome pain au chocolate.

An awesome place to visit on a sunny afternoon. A hipster-chic-old fashioned-neighbourhood grocery-cafe. What's not to love?

This place is an absolute delight!
    Rustic, and authentically french.
Aside from amazing lattes and cappuccinos, they have an incredibly unique selection of groceries, both imported dry pantry goods, and cheeses, dairy, and cured meats. I was very tempted to buy a bag of pasta shaped like bicycles today. Bicycles! And they recently introduced an outdoor, organic, produce display.
The staff are incredibly friendly, and knowledgeable about their products. They also have delicious paninis, flat breads, and quiches.
It does get fairly busy though, especially in the late morning to mid afternoon and is often filled with babies and tots. And it is quite small so it does get hard to find a seat, though they do have outdoor seating now.
If you find yourself in this neighborhood, it is definitely worth trying!

One side of their personality is a small little cafe with baked goods and coffee...the other side is a high-quality, highly-selective grocery store.

I come here for the groceries...milk, cheese, eggs, olive oils and beautiful products I didn't know that I wanted until they showed it to me. And the family that runs the place is so friendly and love to talk about where all the items come from, who makes it, how it gets made...It doesn't look like much, but they pack a lot of lovely items inside that little shop. Worth a visit...and many return visits.

Quaint place tucked in on St. Grieves street. Once you find it, you'll keep wanting to come back here. Serving fresh French pastries and fine coffees and teas, it also is stocked with fresh yogurts and various dairy products. They even have some Harissa and other fine spices here. I started my morning with an Americano and an enormously tasty pain au raisin. Sunny day + a delish breakfast = perfection.

Try this small gem. You'll be glad you did.

Le Marche is a personal favourite spot, and it will always seem magical to me. Under different owners, this place was a yucky corner store in the neighborhood my friends and I grew up in. After LMSG opened, a girlfriend hinted that it might be worth checking out, knowing how much I adore French anything, so I ventured over with my man on a gloomy, dreary morning. We now meet there on special occasions and any free morning that we both have, where I can also be bothered to drag out of bed at an early hour.

The reasons why, are peace, quiet, tranquility, and fresh, delectable pastries from Plaisir Sucre. Time spent there is perfectly wonderful and relaxing. The Larsen family, who now owns the building, are so amazingly friendly, and know how to make excellent cappuccinos to go with our morning croissants (I have tried them all!!) and buns. They are excellent hosts, and care so much about the space, the neighborhood, and the goods that they carry.

Coffees, pastas, crackers, charcuterie, preserves, tinned goods, dairy, candies, soaps, teas, linens, pottery, home cleaning solutions, chocolates, little arte-nouveau tins of solid perfumes, and bread...all of their items are great quality and many are natural, local, environmentally friendly or organic, because they want other families to be happy and healthy, too. They even went to the trouble of visiting the dairy farm that the milk comes from. I really want to see these people succeed, and hopefully the community supports them!

This is the nicest general store/cafe I have ever been to. The antique furniture and rustic decor, with large, bright windows and fancy-dancy serving trays melt my little heart, and makes it easy to forget bustling city life.

    I love Le Marche! xoxo!

OMG- BEST COFFEES, CROISSANTS, QUICHES AND SANDWICHES.

    Was I yelling.?..soooorrry...back to yelping.

I grew up a block away from this lovely spot but when I was a kid we would walk here to get gum and chips; little neighborhood corner store.

The owners, who are lovely, have turned it into a local organic market  and cafe, with farm fresh organic eggs, local produce, cheeses and meats. Lovely doesn't even describe. Delicious lunch fare, pastries and cappuccinos galore..

They even keep their own bees in their garden in the back. Just thinking of this place makes me smile...

My mum and I walked down there a few times on my last visit. I truly hope this place stays around for years and years.

Some day my kids will walk to this little neighborhood store and instead of bringing home gum and chips, They will bring french pastries and milk...

If there were convenience stores in little French villages, they would probably look like Le Marche St. George. You won't find lottery tickets or coca cola here, but you'll want to try the artisan cheeses and meats, the carefully-selected import products, and organically-grown vegetables. Stick around and chat with the friendly owners while sipping a coffee; they love to talk about where the products come from.

Le Marche St. George is the kind of business you don't see often enough in Vancouver: small and highly personal, with a product selection that is carefully thought-out and beautifully displayed in rustic French style.

It may seem off the beatin' path, but it will be worth your while to take a jaunt about four blocks East of Main St. on 28th.

Okay, okay this place does have its charms in the pictures. But in person, it falls short- very, very short. We went there this morning with high expectations. It seemed like a hole in the wall corner store with a few gourmet offerings. There was no "hello, how are you" at the register. The croisants were heavy and doughy. The pain au chocolat overly lacquered. Ordered a London Fog and the drink came with the teabag still in the cup with no where to put the used tea bag... The baristas were constantly touching their hair and faces, which really grossed me out.
Who does these write ups? Gorgeous and cozy??? There is seating for 2 parties inside, for 5 people maybe and just another couple of chairs outside. There did not seem to be a real dishwashing station. Cups were being washed at a sink and not in the sanitary way that's needed for cups used between strangers.
    YUCK!

Absolutely charming. This quaint little market reminds me of an old style Montreal cafe, in a quiet neighbourhood. A very unique sight in Vancouver. Outside, a young couple sat, watching their child play with a dog. A neighbour walked by and greeted a familiar face exiting the cafe. Have a coffee or a pot of tea at the sidewalk table, and you'll feel as though you've been transported to a French garden. The croissants are delicious, and my next visit will be to sample the tasty looking flatbread.

I stop in regularly for some sort of mocha or latte coffee beverage and a croissant. While I am there I also pick up farm fresh eggs and locally made cheeses and artisan sausage. I hope this place doesn't become discovered because it really is a treat in the middle of my neighbourhood and I don't want it expanding or getting too crowded or ruined!
