Clean and stately.  Renovations were underway, but the staff was accommodating.  Beds were really comfortable.  High ceilings.  Enjoyed my stay

I was quite looking forward to staying at this hotel but it ended up being a little bit of a let down.  The positives were the lobby is undoubtedly grand, the room was spacious, and the service at the front desk is top notch (more on that below).  The negatives were the room furnishings (somewhat worn and overall uninspired) and the noise due to ongoing construction.  It was b/c of the noise that we be asked to be moved to another Starwood property in the same category (we were staying using points).  The front desk was gracious and even offered to move us to another room on a higher floor before we ultimately decided to switch hotels (which ended up being the right move for us to enjoy the rest of our trip).

In short, although I do like classic hotels, this hotel in its current incarnation was not for us.

While I think there are many good aspects to this hotel (service, platinum lounge, lobby decor, location), I want to focus on two things that were pretty hardcore buzz kills to my stay.

One, there is no WIFI. I had a pretty serious WTF moment to myself when I hopped on my bed, popped open my computer, and saw that there was no wireless connection. I could probably get wireless at a motel nowadays, no reason why a Le Meridien shouldn't have it. And you have to pay a ridiculous amount to use the wired connection (if you're not plat)!

Two, the gym is outdated. Like 1990s equipment.

It may not be a big deal to most people who may stay here for leisure but if I'm staying for business, these two things are an absolute necessity. So yes to vacation stay, no to business.

I like that King Eddy has old time appeal.  I stayed here on a business trip, and I really enjoyed that the hotel felt unique, in contrast to hotels such as the W, which are upscale but also generic with the same feeling in every city.  The staff was helpful and friendly, and the location is fantastic.

The rooms are larger, but no real wow factor, just comfortable.  Also, they only have internet through ethernet wires in the rooms!!   No wireless.  This was a huge disappointment, and they need to upgrade.  I had to go to the lobby to grab wi-fi for my DROID, which was a major inconvenience.  Most hotels should have wireless in the rooms...  its 2011!

    It's a beautiful old hotel.

Our room was enormous and nicely decorated.  Very British feel to it.

The only semi-con to the place is the dimly lit, kind of depressing looking bathroom.

Typical old school fancy hotel. It reminded me of the luxury collection with all that marble, and in fact, Le Meridien is somewhat of a destination according to travel sites like http://tripadvisor.com. Their service is a notch higher than the Sheraton for sure, and I love that they serve some sparkly juice-waters at the front!

The rooms were ok, mostly I didn't like that it had this gross musky smell that almost smelled like BO. Although, this only happened once, the other stay I had was fine.

I really appreciated the platinum lounge. Make sure you check out the mini fridge which is stocked up with perrier! WOW GOLD MINE. Yep, it's the small things...

Great service; absolutely love the lobby! My boyfriend says it reminds him of his childhood, not because his childhood looked like that, but because it looked like all of the wonderful movies he watched as a kid, sorta like that one hotel in Home Alone.

The rooms were oddly oriented and a little old. We were upgraded to one of their suites, which consisted of a square-ish living room and a separate bedroom that faces a concrete courtyard. It wasn't on one of the top floors, so not a lot of sunlight made it into the room. Not one of my favorite hotel rooms.

    What a grand place!
I have been to the King Eddy often and a pleasant room, friendly and accommodating staff are consistent.
As a platinum SPG guest I am often upgraded to a spectacular room that adds to the experience, but I would stay here anyhow.

    Pros:
    - lounge is a great place to refresh
    - lobby bar is spectacular for a casual meeting or a drink before dinner
    - afternoon tea
    - proximity to everything you want to do in Toronto

    Cons
    - the carpet and bathroom in some rooms are tired ( not bad, just tired)
    - often sold out; book early

The King Eddy is one of those throwbacks to the good old days, when Britannia ruled the waves, the sun never set on the British Empire, and syphillis was killing snuff-sniffing dandies by the dozens.

The lobby is done up in the grand manner with China vases, plush armchairs and various other bric a brac, balustrades and columns on the mezzanine level above, and a big portrait of King Edward smug in his finery.  The Consort Bar looks posh, but I did not partake - if I was here with a girl it would be a different story.  Huge magnums of champagne were on display and it seemed to be the place for a quiet tete-e-tete.

Our room was away from the elevator in what appeared to be a newer section of the building.  It was big, clean, and the windows looked out on King Street below - we were hardly in there.

The location is great.  Jonge Street is right around the corner and the subway is only a few yards from the door.  Most importantly the Hockey Hall of Fame is nearby. The staff was friendly and helpful.  It definitely fits the image of a grand hotel that has not yet seen its prime - plus the price wasn't bad.

For $200 a night, this was a great hotel in a great location downtown; I'd definitely come back.  Certainly not cheap, but among the upper mid-class hotels (Hilton, Starwood, Marriott), this is the best option in Toronto.  The one negative is they have a very (very!) limited room service menu after 11pm.

Beautiful hotel with very good service.  When you first walk into the lobby, you immediately know this is going to be a good stay.  The lobby area has a vaulted glass roof, large marble columns and very graceful decor.  Very clean and well kept.  Very nice for a hotel that has been open for over 100 years!

When I got to my room, it was very large, clean and comfortable.  It was decorated well and had the look and feel of a turn of the century hotel.  They have found a good balance between old world charm and providing modern accommodations that are expected from most travelers.

Finally, this hotel has the perfect location in Toronto, very close to popular attractions including the Eaton Centre, Theatre district, CN Tower, Sky Dome.  It is also has very close access to the subway.

While not cheap, I would highly recommend this hotel if you value comfort and first class accommodations and want to be in the heart of Downtown Toronto with easy access to most everything you need.

Customer service. Customer service. Customer service!

These guys are as good as it gets in that dept. The hotel itself has a classic, regal feel, along with some general quirkiness. The room layouts are sometimes a little random, but anything that might throw you off about the decor, layout, etc, they make up for with an excellent staff that does everything they can to make your stay enjoyable. We have come to Toronto a lot for business, and always make a point to make a reservation at the King Eddie!

The cocktail lounge in the lobby is a great place to unwind after a long day.

I stayed here for 1 night.  I had booked through Priceline, and got a great deal.

The atrium of the place is amazing.  Very nice, posh, and the people are very friendly.

I had asked for a double, but they only had a single queen.  So I had to upgrade to a king suite (only $50 more), with a cot.  I'll say the king sized bed is amazingly comfortable.  The cot looked passable.  The sitting area had dated furniture, and a position for the tv that was at an awkward angle.  The views from our room on the 15th floor were not so good (into a wall, into an alley).  The bathroom was passable, but had nice shampoos and stuff.

I don't particularly care for the room that much, as I just want it to be clean (check) and comfortable (check).  Also, the location of this hotel is amazing, and there's some history involved with this hotel.  I recommend it!

Where do I begin when it comes to the King Edward hotel? With the lobby of course.  There are almost no words.  It's really beautiful, with marble everywhere and it was just so elegant, almost too elegant, as I stood there in my shorts and t-shirt gaping at the hugeness of it all.  They apparently serve afternoon tea, and they also do a brunch, but it's way too expensive.

Throughout our stay in Toronto, I really appreciated the location of our hotel.  Almost smack dab in the middle of the financial district, accessible to the King subway stop, as well as many streetcars you can pretty much get anywhere you want in Toronto from here.  St. Lawrence Market is a 5 minute walk and it's across the street from the Beer Bistro (review to come soon).

The elevators are treacherous, seriously, if you plan on going into one of these elevators, make sure it's within .5 seconds of the door opening; otherwise it will close shut on your arm.  Our room was very nice, huge comfy King sized bed, flat screen TV and a huge bathroom.  There was even a safe in one of the closets.  I also managed to get to the gym everyday (astonishing, I know) and it was extremely clean, and they provided water bottles and towels.  It wasn't very big, but big enough to let you get a full body workout.  There is also a Spa located in the hotel, but Joe wouldn't let me take advantage of that :(

They charge you for EVERYTHING, I made one phone call that lasted maybe 2 minutes and it was like $4.00! Internet was something like $13.00 a day or hour, I can't remember.

Everyone was extremely nice to us and they really catered to all of our needs, from when Joe locked his beer in the mini fridge to when I lost my wallet.  I would come back to the King Edward hotel in a heartbeat!

This is really a classic! If you stay in hotels often and are growing weary of the 'standard appointed room' - spend a weekend here! The building is obviously very old but has been kept up, and the rooms are stately and classical. Staff was very helpful...

The internet is not included in the room, but is free in the lobby and club lounge if you need to send a few emails...

I'm really  not sure what the parking situation is - I actually showed up in a rental car, circled the building twice looking for a ramp entrance, noticed the subway station on the same block - and punched "Avis" into the GPS... I returned the car to an Avis outfit about 5 blocks south of the hotel as you certainly don't need a car if you're staying in this property. In addition to the nearby subway, the hotel offers a limousine service in the mornings from 7:30 - 9:30 during the week... Pretty baller if you have a downtown client out of walking distance.

The club lounge on the 11th floor is the largest one I've seen, and offers free breakfast in the morning, as well as appetizers, wine, beer, and soda all complimentary in the evenings. The attendant was very friendly and when they closed she sent me and my friend back to the room with a fresh bottle of chardonnay...

    I'll definitely be back.

More like 3 and half stars until full renovation is completed.
The King Edward hotel  opened in 1903. The hotel was granted it's name by namesake King Edward VII. Notable celebrities that have stayed  in the hotel are:  Mark Twain, Rudolph Valentino, Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley,  Britney Spears, and Ernest Hemingway who had lived in the hotel for a period.  Even Margaret Thatcher lived here! Here is a web site that lists the celebrities and dignitaries that have stayed here. http://blog.buzzbuzzho...
It is kind of like the old  Plaza in NYC and is planning  a full  renovation just like the Plaza has done as well.
They are supposed to build condos within the hotel again during it's up coming renovation.
    http://www.yongestreet...
The Beatles also stayed here  in 1964. The King Edward has not only housed film stars but also film sets, from  Leonard Cohen's 1983 musical I am a Hotel, to  Jamie Foxx's film Bait.
I think we had a renovated room and it is clear they want to keep the Victorian theme of the hotel only redone with modern furnishings to make it look Victorian.
It belongs to the Starwood group of hotels so you can get points staying here. We did not eat in the hotel but they do have an afternoon tea that we took advantage of which was nice. We also did not use the gym or laundry services which they do offer.
It is obviously a traditional classic hotel. It is charming and service is warm and friendly. One special feature is that each room is decorated differently kind of like a B and B. No 2 rooms are exactly the same. I would like to go back when it is fully renovated!

Old style hotel in the downtown of Toronto. Rooms are fair sized. Bed is quite comfortable. Traditional style furniture in the room. Bathroom is not that big but everything works well. Breakfast was quite good in the restaurant. Unfortunately the interent is not wireless so you have to use a cable but the connection is easy and quite good. Price paid was quite good.

I spent 2 nights here and absolutely adored this hotel! We were upgraded to a suite for being SPG Gold and the room was so nice and big, we didn't know what to do with all of it!

We even had a printer in our room. Room service was good. The beds were so comfortable! And the lobby was soooo pretty that we didn't feel we had enough of it even after sitting there for 3 hours!

I know I've stayed here before and didn't hate it as much as I did this last time. I don't know if it was because I got in at 10pm (or because I was originally bringing my dog), but I got stuck in an AWFUL room on the 2nd floor--the banquet and room service floor.
It was a square little room with hardly any furniture, facing an awful looking building and parking lot.
There was so much noise on that floor and the room smelled of fresh paint.
It didn't bother me that it was a handicap room, and then I thought: how can they put handicap people in here?!
    Awful.

    Pros: Location
    Friendly and knowledgeable staff.
    Clean lobby and common areas.

Cons:  I had a room with a shower/tub that would not drain!  I showered daily in inches of dirty water :(  There was no offer to change rooms or compensate for this.  It was really quite disgusting to shower with your own filth lingering in the tub and bathroom for hours.
I was given a room at the very end of the hall that was small and dirty, unfortunately.  I was also given a key to a mini bar and guaranteed that it would be filled, but there was no mini bar in the room.  The room was of far lower quality than I anticipated based on other reviews.

The hotel is perfectly acceptable but I was definitely expecting more and it didn't seem like a regal old hotel at all.  So I give it 3 stars.   The lobby was very large with random scattered couches in the middle and a tea area on one side, but lacked unity and seemed kitzchy.  There were too many boutiques.  Reminded me a bit of Hilton Chicago.  My room was very large, and the room service was extremely quick - I only got the seasonal fruit with banana bread - but it was only okay (the banana bread seemed like it had been frozen).  There was no wireless in the rooms, only in the lobby.  Overall, good friendly service, but given that it's supposed to be renovated, it did not seem either regal or updated.

This hotel is pretty good to platinum guests.  I received a suite upgrade and the lounge had free beer and wine in the evenings which was very nice (not something you see in normal US Starwood properties).

While the room had a LCD TV in the living room, the bedroom had a very small tube TV that needs to be updated.  In general the hotel is very classy and elegant but just seems a little old.  Maybe I'm bias but I prefer the feel of W Hotels over the "stuffy" Le Meridien.

Good stay though and good service.

This review might be swayed by the fact that we got a great deal for a room from hotwire...

The King Edward's lobby is very nice. The staff was quick to check us in, and the concierge was very helpful is pointing us in the right direction. The room was large and clean, with a very comfortable bed, comfortable pillows, and a roomy and clean bathroom. There was no noise of the city from our room. The location was very good. Parking was a bit expensive, but there are a few garages around the area for much less money.

My only complaint was that there was no free internet.

Very nice hotel in a busy area of Toronto. You are within walking distance to the major shopping mall and fine dining and TO's nightlife. I got this pricey 4 star off of priceline for 75% off of the price posted on its website. But even if I had paid the full price, I would have still thought it was worth my cash for the stay.

Sorry. I don't usually give poor reviews. But this hotel reminded me of a poor assisted living place in Queens. My room was dingy. Looked like it hadn't been renovated since Edward passed away. It was quite a large room with two queen size beds with twin or double headboards. No plugs by the desk for cell phones/computers. The phone didn't have clear buttons on it to call reception or the concierge. The bathroom was puny and shoved into a corner. I was expecting a gem in downtown Toronto. A Plaza, a Carlyle, a Plaza Athenee (ok maybe bigger). And I got a nursing home. If you can get a room for under $150 and need a hotel, then stay here. If you are looking for a comfortable room and need amenities, look elsewhere until they invest in this place. None of the photos served up by yelp looked anything like my empty room.
