We have been here for dinner twice now and they do not disappoint. Both times the food and service was excellent. The meals themselves are some of the best we have ever had! Highly recommend!

Settling in for a real nice cozy atmosphere is Le Hobbit.
I would probably write something about the food, but strangely most of it is rather simple but ok. Nothing was breathtakingly standing out here, but nothing awful either. A pretty good wine list with a lot of choices, even by the glass.
Menu does have a lot of choices, so there's a good decent amout of variety. Specialty onglet was nothing too crazy but at least cooked nicely. Watercress here for a garnish seemed to be on just about everything, (even the french onion soup which did not disappoint). Seems the service and the atmosphere here is what I really seemed to enjoy the most, it's a good solid stop for what's on the street in the area. I could go back, but I wouldn't expect anything extraordinary or dying to try something I didn't get the chance to. -

A very pleasant surprise. Was not really feeling this place, but my girlfriend insisted we eat a French restaurant while we were in Quebec.
Glad I listened to her. Very friendly service and I thought the food was fantastic. The shoe-string fries were awesome! NIce ambience and it's a great location for tourists.
Highly recommended... -

We came in search of French eats! Oh Oui did we find the right place.
Hubster and I learned quite a bit during this dinner! Sweet Bread is not at all anything like a pastry and Sea Trout is pink like Salmon!
This meal was hands down my favorite dining experience during our visit to Quebec. The server with the blond spiky hair was very entertaining and enlightening. Merci beaucoup for answering my naive questions! Not once did he make us feel beneath him with our unsophisticated pallets!
The menu was in both francis and anglais, but we were still lost on what to order. We opted for the Leak Soup for starters, Beef Tartare, Artichoke Sweet Bread for appetizer, the Sea Trout for our meal and Creme Brulee for dessert.
The soup was good and creamy. When the the Sweet Bread arrived we were expecting sort of an artichoke dip and bread. To our surprise there was a meaty, artichoke stew with filo bread on top. Made sense, thought the filo bread was the sweet bread part. When I took a bite of the meat it was totally unrecognizable. My husband said, "its chicken! Cool we got a two-fer!" We debated on the fact that this was not chicken. I refused to keep eating and moved onto the Beef Tartar, yum!!!
When our server came to check on us we asked about the meat in our Sweet Bread dish and he said, "sweet bread" and we reply "right, what is in that dish?" he replies again, "sweet bread!" we were really puzzled and he goes on to to tell us that Sweet Bread is a part of veal that gets cut off before they grow testicles... he stops there and we freak out, did we eat veal testicles?! And he goes on to say, BEFORE the veal reach puberty and grow testicles, they cut the thymus and that is what sweet bread is.
Shiver! Granted, I'm not a picky eater. But where I draw the line is Veal!
We came for real French eats and here we got it, without even knowing!
Too funny.
When the fish arrived, my first observation was that it was pink. I immediately think they are trying to play us for fools. I've had trout many times and it's white! Did they run out of Trout and are trying to serve us Salmon? I wave over the blond spiky hair guy and he happily explains that Sea Trout are big and are pink like Salmon. I thank him kindly for answering all our questions and he did this cute bow saying it was his pleasure and to let him know if we have any others.
It was a wonderful meal in a dimly lit, cozy restaurant. We had a great time and definitely recommend it to anyone coming into town! -

On a lazy Monday we headed for a late lunch. Le Hobbit was pretty much empty. Service was good, as we were the only ones in the place. The food was at best unimpressive. I had the mushroom and cheese crust (aka croque Monsieur) and bf had the venison burger. Good points... The shoe string fries are fantastic and quite addictive. The portion size is huge. Now the bad... The baguette for the croque Monsieur was soggy and completely smothered in cheese. It's he venison burger was burnt and the menu description of wild mushrooms turned out to be simple button mushrooms. Would not return as there are many other places in QC to try.

Absolutely fantastic cuisine from appetizer to dessert! The duck was fabulous.

What a wonderful place- Small but could comfortably accomodate our large reservation! I ordered the venison carpaccio and the elk skirt steak- both were amazing! The service was great as well- the only thing that I would mention is that the by - the- glass wine list is kind of a bummer. only 4 options, and 2 of them were sold out.
The folks who ordered the burgers were all dissapointed.
After my delicious meal, I ordered a cheese plate for dessert, and was exceptionally happy- I would definitely reccomend this place to anyone and everyone! -

Easily the worst artwork I've seen in an eatery.
Beyond that, the burger was good and the onion soup was tasty--not too salty.
Not sure of the connection to the Hobbit. I saw no hairy feet. But then again, I didn't look at all the artwork. -

Love Rue St Jean!! After a full day of walking in the hilly Old City, we were looking forward to a great meal. Le Hobbit was one of the very few restaurants still open around 10pm on this street. I was intrigued by the name and the ambiance looks quite promising from the outside.
Only thing was we saw a couple of flies inside the restaurant and mind you it was 50f outside... just an observation...
Food was just average in my opinion.
My favorite was the black pudding with parmesan crisp and raspberry purée. Thanks for making my first black pudding a pleasant experience. The Parmesan crisp was a little stale but still added to the presentation.
Duck confit panini with sweet onions and pickles. They were very generous with the duck confit. But the combo was overtly sweet for my taste. It cones with string fries that wasn't seasoned and salad that was already slightly wilted. Well it was 10pm afterall.
My friends got the duck confit cannelloni and she was really happy about her dish.
Service was quite alright, as usual the waiter was trying hard to translate the menu for us which was nice. -

We had a wonderful dining experience here before heading to a concert for the Quebec Summer Festival. I enjoyed the frigale (soup or salad and hot beverage for $6 CAD) deal with the elk skirt steak and mashed potatoes with leeks. Perfectly done and very flavorful. My husband had the duck cannelloni with wild mushrooms and cheese which was out of this world dish to eat.
The ambience was great as we people watched, balking at the insanity of people driving cars into the old city. -

Bistro with nice sidewalk cafe seating. Enjoyed our lunches today: the panini with confit de canard was huge and good, perhaps with more mustard than necessary? Double-sized crocque-monsieur was excellent. Full marks for the excellent shoe-string fries. Pasta with four cheeses was tasty but not as generous as the others. Good service, nicely decorated with a modern but still cozy feel.

Like Anh V., we also dined at Le Hobbit twice during our stay in Quebec City. We fell in love with the cozy space (especially important since it was a chilly/rainy/snowy April when we were there). We loved the cheese plate and I don't remember the entrees we chose, but we always went with the specials for the evening.
It was reasonably priced for sure. And I think part of the reason we went back is that we kind of had a crush on our waiter. Very handsome! -

Friendly staff greeted us right away and made us feel good all evening. The other guests were a great mix of friends, a couple large groups celebrating something, a few families with kids (including one newborn) and several couples of all ages.
The food was imaginative if a bit typical and traditional bistro style, and well prepared and presented. Plenty of wine by the glass choices.
We also enjoyed the artwork (photography for sale) covering the walls.
It felt like a local - which I prefer - but obviously had plenty of tourist customers too.
This was another Quebec restaurant with the odd policy of having it's customers go to the bar to pay the bill with a credit card. -

a charming bistro with their daily specials constantly changing on the menu.
we came here twice on our short visit.
i preferred the seating area in the back which was away from the door but was sunlit and comfortable.
their special that day included a delicious borscht soup - a hearty concoction of beets and cabbage. i picked the beef bourguignon as the main dish- a slow cooked dish with red wine and tender bits of beef. the special came with coffee or tea for $14.95.
of course, i had to add in the dessert for an additional $2.00 - it was a light and creamy creme caramel otherwise known as flan.
the following day, i had the tri-color rigatoni pasta with a three cheese sauce. perfectly al dente and sinful. if you need more protein with the pasta - the chicken was juicy and flavorful.
the greek salad was a meal in itself so do share the two dishes between two.
sante!Listed in: weekend in quebec city

Highly recommended bistro on Rue St. Jean. They recently completed a major renovation of the space. We had canneloni de canard (duck) and a very good trout dish. The service was friendly and efficient, the prices reasonable, and the food was memorable. (Mmmm, I'm remembering it now...) There is great attention to both preparation and presentation here. They also seem to be open later than some other restaurants in the neighborhood. Put this one on your list.

i gave it four stars, not because it is a fantastic restaurant, but because it is a really great bistro. reviewers who ordered hamburgers give me a laugh. i was in quebec city for a week and went twice. both times, i ordered off the menu du jour, both an entree and plate. the food was very good, not fantastic, but very good. the place is comfortable, not too noisy, and the service friendly and relaxed. i am not one for overly attentive or obsequious service, or for eating quickly, so friendly and relaxed is fine.
if you are a veg, it is not ideal, but you can make do. -

charming bistro with great service. came here because i thought it was the only restaurant that served trout in the area instead of salmon which i had enough already. but to my dismay, it was a steelhead trout which looks and tastes like salmon. they should have just really said in the menu that it isnt the tipical river trout. it could have been better if it was prepared differently but they have it done just the regular pan seared style. taste was just okay. also, we went there on a 90 F degree weather and they dont have A/C so decided just to order it to go.

My dinner experience at Le Hobbit was not great to say the least. Probably my worst dining experience in Quebec City which otherwise has some great restaurants. The service, while very friendly, was pretty awful. We didn't get any water until over half-way through our meal. During a long dinner we saw our waiter maybe 3 times. He never asked how our meal was. He told us to pay our check at the bar (maybe this is a normal custom here? I felt like he was just lazy). Even worse than the service was the food. The cheese platter was weak. The veggie burger my wife had was inedible. The salad tasted like I was eating grass with a little dressing dribbled on top. My burger was nearly burnt, even though I asked for it medium. They only had one beer available on tap even though the menu showed at least 5 if not 10. The worst part was that the staff was so inattentive, I don't think they even realized what a poor job they were doing.
