This restaurant has been around for a very long time.  I have frequented it for at least 10-15 years.  For those who remember, it used to be located on Thurlow Street until it moved to it's current location.

There is nothing that I can say about this restaurant that has not been said except to offer additional praise.  It is truly exceptional in terms of food and service.  The waiters and maitre d are first rate.  Very nice and romantic ambiance.

The menu is constantly changing so I cannot really go into what is exceptional.  What I do remember as outstanding was a lobster risotto.  I don't know if it is still on the menu.

Definitely a place for special occasions

We went on the Saturday night after Thanksgiving.  The dinning room was full, with people enjoying themselves.  The place is nice but not over the top.  Very comfortable feeling.

We were explained the many options being featured for the evening along with the full menu.  I had the crabcake app with the sweetbreads for my main course.  Both were outstanding.  The other had the lobster ravioli app, this was amazing.  For his main course he had the duck breast served with Fois Gras.  It was superb.

We enjoyed a nice Cote D'Rhone that didn't break the wallet.  The overall experience was great and we look forward to going back on our next trip up to Vancouver BC.

I was in Vancouver in the summer of 2006.  We ate at many places in BC, but this place always stuck out in my memory as having a kick ass foie gras.  The other items were good, but not quite worth their cost, but it was one good foie.  The service was also good.  This was before Yelp had expanded, so you could had to rely on the city guides found in hotels, cross-checked with Yelp.

I rated the service at 4-star and the food at 3-star only.

My friend took me here for my birthday dinner.  The service was excellent and the waitress was so attentive.

We got a complimentary mushroom almond tart to start with. We ordered lobster ravioli with sea scallops and crab cakes for appetizers.  However, we found the sea scallops was quite fishy and crab cake a bit salty.

We had lobster risotto  as second course to share and it was very creamy and delicious.

I had pan fried sea bass  and my friend had caribou as main course.  Both of us found it was good but not impress at all.

We still have some room for dessert and had the chocolate crepes with hazelnut mousse filling and orange ice cream.

I am not a typically looking for French cuisine, but tonight my girlfriend and I decided to try some in a city known for great French restaurants.

We were offered a sample of the foie gras, and it was absolutely delicious. We ordered the Pumpkin soup with bacon (10/10), Arugula Salad with Shrimp (9/10), the 1.5 pound lobster plate with veggies in a lemon cream reduction (7/10), and the bone marrow appetizer (7/10). The chef even offers a complimentary sample of their Sorbet to finish to meal...the Pear Sorbet offered tonight was incredible (10/10).

I am just a visitor to Vancouver, but I can say with complete confidence that this is a must try for anyone looking for great French cuisine in the downtown neighborhood.

Le Crocodile is the BOMB! The Portions are Ginormous and reasonably priced all things considered.
For Lunch we ordered and shared the:
    Tomato Gin Soup
    Halibut w/ Tempura Shrimp Prawns
    Oysters on the half
    Braised Veal Cheeks w/ Pasta
We ended up taking half the Veal home because it was just so large.
    Service was perfect.

Thank you Michel Jacob for being the culinary stalwart that you are. Your restaurant's simply amazing, consistently putting out reliably superb cuisine for close to the two decades which I have dined at your restaurant.

Your dedication to the quality of your food and restaurant is unparalled.

I have seen great restaurants come and go, great restaurants that last but have their quality fluctuate between spectacular and not so much so.
Le crocodile has not disappointed in the 18 yrs I have dined with them.

Food is perfect, classic French cuisine. Utmost attention is paid from flavours to textures, to the design of each plate.

It is a monumental testament to le crocodile that when culinary celebrity Emile Jung came and created an anniversary menu with Michel for their 25th anniversary dinner, though the meal was fabulous, I was slightly diappointed it was not as good as the cuisine created and put forth my Michel himself.

    You guys are world class!

Had to break the bank to have dinner here, but it was pretty much worth it.

The slow braised lamb shank was cooked perfectly, but I have to admit that the lamb could have been better.  It lacked the robust and distinctive flavor that makes lamb what it is.  The accompanying gnocchi was rich and delicious.

My girlfriend had the sea bass, and as if to counterbalance the so-so taste of the lamb, it was out of this world good.  One of the best seafood preparations I have ever had.  The chef bestowed us with a plate of shoestring pommes frites to soak up the excess sauce.  Brilliant!

We had the orange creme brulee for desert.  It was good, but I don't think I've ever met a creme brulee that I didn't like.  I love the crocodile confections, and I appreciate that they give you both milk and dark.

The service was very cordial and professional.  The ambiance is just ok; the lightning was a little bright for me, the decor is unexciting, and I thought the tiles at the front door looked like bathroom tiles.  The restaurant is attached to a hotel, and looks the part.  I wouldn't let that stop me from coming back, however, because the food, menu, and service were terrific.

The Express Lunch is a pretty good deal at $20 but I think it's worth shelling out a few more bucks to get what you really want in a regular entrée (my veal medallions were superb). It took a long time for our food to come out since I was with a sizable group, so I don't know if one would have enough time on a typical lunch break. But Le Crocodile is the kind of place where you'd want to linger a little longer. It'll take you a while to finish the generous portions anyhow.

This is Proper French Food. Presentations aren't modern, newfangled, deconstructed, or molecular; instead, you get well-executed items with classic treatment (turned veggies, dust-fine parsley, perfect shoe-string potatoes), usually with a plateful of sauce -- really, the best sauces in town.

The only glitches in taste, I thought, were a rather sour mushroom soup and a voluptuous butter lettuce salad that could've used a more tasty dressing.

One of the best restaurants in town. Unbelievable flavour, and amazing service. I abosolutely love coming here. Although it's very expensive, it's always nice to treat yourself to mouth-watering food.

Let me start with the service. The servers are very professional and they constantly make sure that your glass is filled with wine or water. The chef as well, the times we've been there give complimentary quiche dishes or a taste of their inhouse sorbet, etc. And during Birthdays they always make you feel special by giving you a dessert with a candle to blow.

Love French sauces. The first time I came here, I ordered the Lobster. At first I didn't think it was worth that much, but then I realized I thought about the taste of the sauce, and how juicy the morel mushrooms were. And even better is that when you leave Le Crocodile your tummy is content, not too full or bloated.

Le Crocodile is the best French restaurant I've been to in Vancouver. The decor is smart and elegant and the staff is knowledgable and friendly.

The foie gras was very well done and they didn't skimp on the portion. The lobster bisque was rich and delicious. I had the seafood pasta as an entree twice and it never disappoints even though I usually get something else like duck confit while at French cuisine. Give this place a try. You won't be disappointed!

Impeccable service, and I mean, you get what you pay for.  Even drove my car back up after we paid the bill so we wouldn't have to wait for it after we got outside!  Staff was knowledgeable and very friendly.  The food was absoutely worth the premium price!

Pan seared froe gras was for the appy followed by the angel hair pasta with prawns and scallops.  The waiter even let me change the sauce since I don't like cream sauce.

Great place to take a date!

Very few times in life does one experience a meal that transports you into a divine decadent realm - a world consumed by sensuous pleasures devoid of everyday concerns. I had just such a meal last night at Le Crocodile, arguably Vancouver's finest restaurant. For just a few hours nothing else existed except the exquisite culinary works of art bestowed on our dining party by Chef Michel Jacob and his gifted kitchen staff.

A day later I'm still not hungry. It's as though my body doesn't want to let go of the lingering memory of this sumptuous meal, the flawlessness of which it will likely never experience again.

Our party started with an amuse bouche of a chevre tart. Simply stated - pastry perfection. Shortly after fresh pan-seared Quebec foie gras topped with a grilled scallop, in a Calvados reduction and served with perfectly ripe cantaloupe arrived to our collective gasps. The foie gras dissolved in my mouth like a snowflake in the rain. I needed a pause of silence to lose myself in the rapture of the moment.

It seemed like I'd barely regained my composure when our entrees arrived in a sweeping tour de force - a plump inviting lobster tail perched like an apostrophe atop a bed of caribou tenderloin strips, layered on a mound of sweet pea cous cous and encircled in a deep garnet moat of Pinot Noir reduction sauce. The sides, a cheeky matchstick crisp potato nest and delicate portions of brussel sprouts, baby yellow squashes and turnips. Hard to imagine how anyone could improve on the taste or visual presentation of this dish.

My companion, clever fellow that he is, ordered the Dover sole, which at first blush I thought a rather sedate selection on a menu with prettier sister selections. How wrong I was. Its elegance lies in the simplicity of preparation and a classic beurre blanc sauce, that only a chef mentored by Strasbourg's famed chef Emile Jung, could create.

A Poire William sorbet cleansed the palate. I thought I was done but then it was like spotting a lover across the room, my heart fluttered. There she sat, at the next table, voluptuous and resplendent in her youth.  I had to have her. My warm orange citrus soufflé beckoned to me. When she arrived at the table the server deftly poked a hole in her centre, eliciting a delicate exhale, then poured a thick stream of crème anglaise deep into the well. Ah...I was putty in her hands.

Service by the way - as one would expect from a restaurant of this caliber - is superb: attentive and well-informed, there exactly when you need them, but never hovering or pretentious, and more than happy to join in the evening's banter.

So if you are looking for one of the finest dining experiences of your life - in a city like Vancouver where the competition is stiff indeed - and your credit card is ready to be deployed for some heavy lifting, then I say bien sur Le Crocodile.

The restaurant is very romantic with great service.  Valet parking really made our day there!

The 5 course tasting menu is very good value with huge portion each course, I would say they were almost 2x the average french restaurant i have been to in US.

Food tastes good, nice presentation, ingredients can be better but given the price I have no real complaint.

However, i don't recommend foie gras, which is really soso and taste more like mousse pate instead.

Went here for my brother's 20-something birthday, and this place does not disappoint!!

It's ambiance is romantic, so if you want to impress a date, a boss, or your visiting in-laws, this is THE perfect place to bring them to.  Just make sure you have reservations as this tends to get busy especially during holidays and weekends.

My server was amazing and attentive!! I loved how she patiently explained each of the specials without any notes. LOL

I ended up ordering for my entree, the roast duck with pan-seared foie gras and then foie gras terrine for my appetizer.  The duck was perfectly cooked, pink in the middle.  And the rest of my family had no complaints on any of their meals.

Will definitely go back! In fact it's currently my favorite French restaurant.  Just a warning, this place is expensive though (even for Vancouver standards).

The Skinny: exceptional service however the flawed flavour combinations and lack of an editing eye make for a rather poor dining experience (2.5) service: excellent service however the timing of the dishes were rather poor considering we ordered a prix fixe menu (4), value: unfortunately, given the level of cuisine, $90 for a 5 course menu is a little outrageous.

First of all, this place is hard to find. It's actually located on the corner of Smythe and Burrard because I actually wandered into the IGA looking for this place.

Wait times between courses were a little on the lengthy side. I think we were sipping on cocktails for at least 20 minutes before we were offered the menu. For a 5 course chef's menu, we were there from 7:30 to 11:00 pm.

We started with an amuse with a mushroom tart with truffles- made with what appeared to be the frozen pie tartlet crust. Lame! Not to mention, the flavour of the mushroom just didn't come through in that dish.

The pumpkin souffle with chanterelles were nice. The souffle had a nice texture and flavour but unfortunately the mushrooms were slightly underseasoned and bland.

We order the foie gras which was disappointing. It came with some potato crunchies on top with melon and a lot of sauce. The sauce was pleasant but not great. The only redeeming quality was the portion size of the foie - it's a large serving. Now if only it were better prepared...

The Lobster Crepe was very flavourful. However, I felt that the slightly overdone halibut on top was a little overkill on what would have a been a nice dish.

The grenadin of Alberta Veal and the duck confit with cranberry hollandaise was the final dish. Just to let you know...  I have a beef. I have a beef with sauces that look like Pepto-bismol. The cranberry hollandaise was highly unappealling layered over a perfectly good duck confit - definitely needed an editing eye. The hollandaise was too heavy for the duck confit. The veal was not that tender either. Flavour-wise, the sauces were beginning to all taste alike (with the exception of the Pepto... I mean, cranberry hollandaise).

The cantalope sorbet smothered in port was a little too heavy to be a palate cleanser.

Finally, the best dish of the night was the baked passion fruit cream with fresh mango and coconut sorbet. The passionfruit really came through in the dessert and matched well with the cream. The coconut sorbet was less decadent than it ought to be.

Overall, considering how much dinner was and the poor quality of the food, I definitely felt bummed out - 2 stars.

Le Crocodile restaurant is my favourite restaurant in town for many years.  I've tried other well-known find dining restaurants in Vancouver (including the former Lumiere) but Le Croc has always been my favourite.

The food is delicious and the service is impeccable.  Dishes I like are the Chilean Sea bass in Lobster Deduction,  1/2 Roasted Lobster served Thermidor in its shells and Grilled Prime Rib on Bone.  But their desserts are yet the best!  I haven't had good desserts at many restaurants (usually pastry shops make way better desserts) but the desserts at Le Crocodile are sinful.  Must-try desserts are the Soufflé served with Orange Crème Anglais and the Chocolate Crepes with Halzutnut Filling.

The servers at Le Croc are polite and attentive.  I find that if it is a table of only ladies, the service is even better!  I'm so happy that Vancouver has a restaurant like Le Croc!

Absolutely loved it.  I am so happy we found this place!!

The hardest part was to find the restaurant.  The address is Burrad street, but the entrance is actually in Symthie.  I was a little annoyed by that, but all was forgotten/forgiven once the food started to come in.

We did a-la-carte dinning.  It was fantastic.  It took a little to get the first course, but then everything was flowing at a great pace.  We even got 3 "treats" during the course (I think to kill time while they finished the next course) but they were all delicious.

We did not have alcohol, which usually is a turn-off for good service.  Well, not here!  Our glasses were always full and the service was great.

Definitively will be back and, now officially on my top 3 favorite restaurants.

We need something like this in Seattle!

Nice little traditional french bistro. No it is not haute cuisine and the people who work there shouldn't pretend that it is. There is nothing wrong with a bistro that's striving towards the higher end of its category. No surprises and none of the items ordered were disappointing. No complaints. 3 stars.

    Excellent food, flawless service.

Our waitstaff was genuine and available. They tidied up our table at appropriate intervals. They gave a decent explanation of their menu items.

Our appetizers and entrees were flawless in presentation and flavor. We ordered the onion tart and escargot. The escargot shells were made of thin pastry, which was a tasty surprise. Our entrees were leg of lamb Provencal and fish trio. The leg of lamb had a rich flavor. The fish were excellent, although the sauce was a bit too rich. Very surprising for a french restaurant, the portions were relatively massive. In fact after our amuse bouche mushroom quiche and appetizers, we had very little room for our main course!

Would we visit again? Absolutely! The food is great, the service is the best we have had in Vancouver, and the restaurant is reminiscent of Paris without being overbearing.

The restaurant wasn't what I imagined it to be.  More open and bright, the tables were so close together and not much ambiance.  The service was ok.   Where they lacked in service, they made up for in food.

For starter, I tried to bone marrow.  (I've always wanted to try it after watching people eat it on iron chef) It was too fatty for my liking, but I can totally appreciate why people would love it.   The flavors were simple and it was well seasoned with garlic and truffle oil.  For my main course, I had the froie gras with duck breast. OMG.. so tasty, the best froie gras and duck I've ever had.  It was surprisingly a large entree and I was only able to finish half of it.  For dessert we had the souffle which was finished off with grand marnier cream.  *drool*  That followed by an espresso and the crocodile chocolates made me one happy girl.

Whenever I have a bad day, last thing I need is going into a place with poor service and food. Coming here or bringing guests is always safe and makes my day and never disappointed! This place never fails me EVERY single time I've been here!

To start off with is the excellent service. The waiters are very tentative no matter how busy the place is. My water is always filled and I don't even notice when they come around! One time my husband made a reservation for my birthday and the hostess said: "You look so beautiful today, must be your birthday! *wink *wink! I guess they took time to note these little things in their book. Another time they brought me a complimentary salmon tart. I didn't touch it. The waiter noticed and I told him I don't like fish. He quickly ordered a duck tart for me. Other things like the staff there always wear a smile, open the door, pull chairs, etc. really makes the dinning experience extra special.

Now comes the food. I am a picky eater who always complaint and won't eat a lot of different foods such as parsley, celery, carrots, lamb, goats, fish, oysters, game meats to name a few. However, after dinned here a couple of times. I know whatever I order (even food I've never tried before) will taste great! The taste is delicate and you can tell how much care was put into prepping each dish!  I like just about everything in their menu but most of the time opt for their Tasting 5 course menu for $75. Don't even think that their portion size is small for a second! We always come out full...too full! If you don't want a dinner, go in for their Souffle or Tiramisu. They are to die for!

Disclaimer: This review is long overdue.

Le Crocodile is just simply divine. Cosy and romantic. The server was charming, attentive and quite frankly the best I've ever had! I had a starter of soft shell crab that was only so-so, but for my main course had the steak with Bearnaise sauce which was phenomenal.

Unlike a lot of other frou frou places - the serving size here is extremely generous. Although I left there with an emptier wallet, honestly it really is not too expensive for the quality of service and food.  All I have to say is eat here.

I would definitely return to Vancouver to dine here again.

The service is definitely as good as everyone says it is.  The waiter turned up his nose at my initial entree selection, so I picked something else - gotta trust the man!  Great wine list.  Complementary "amuse bouche" (my bouche was definitely amused) and desert plate.  The peppercorn sauce on my steak was almost hilariously abundant in peppercorns, but over all, the meal was good.  Would definitely visit again.

Definitely one of the top French restaurants in Vancouver.

Service was amazing here.. they are very attentive.. refill your water regularly.. they fold your napkin.. clean your tabletop between courses.. even this very good looking french woman in a business suit (manager?) came by a few times to make sure everything was great.

Ordered a half litre of Red (Bordeaux) which was really good and complimented the meal well.

To start, we had frogs' legs and a plate of seared foie gras that came with quail.  Both outstanding as a first course.. I had never had frogs' legs before and I figured I'd start at the 'best' place and I was not disappointed.  They were succulent and the sauce was really good too.  The foie gras and quail were also delicious.

For entrees we had the veal chop and a seafood angel hair pasta.. the veal was tender and you get a very large portion.. the sauce used for the pasta was incredibly creamy and a sensation on the tastebuds.

Important to note: the portions for all the menu items were very sizeable.. this is NOT one of those fancy restaurants where you pay an arm and a leg and end up with miniscule portions. You actually leave full and satisfied.

Bonus:  we received 2 complimentary dishes from the Chef.. i have read this on other reviews and believe it to be a fairly regular occurence.. the comp dishes were awesome as well.. a goat cheese tart.. and a pear sorbet at the end.

We also had ordered dessert to share.. chocolate crepes.. they weren't completely what i had expected as i've had chocolate crepes in Paris which were to die for.. these were not bad and an interesting take on them.. they used chocolate mousse instead of sauce  which was still good.

They bring out the bill with mini chocolate crocodiles.. a very nice touch.  Total bill for all of the above for 2 people = $200.. but incredibly worth every penny.  Would recommend this to anyone that wants a superb french culinary experience.  Make sure you make reservations (they were busy even on a Tuesday).

I reserved a table for two for our 10th anniversary.  We had cocktails - Tanqueray/tonic in perfect balance and a martini smoother than any I've ever had.   We started with Kusshi oysters on the half shell and escargot. Oysters were fresh, clean, and perfect. Escargot was served in a pastry-type open shell and in the traditional butter sauce. Yum!
I had a grilled asparagus salad. Very good but not exciting.  Entrees were duck breast with pan-seared foie gras and sweetbreads. The best foie gras I have had!  Melted in my mouth. My husband loved the sweetbreads even though he had never had them before.  He's very adventurous.  Dessert was creme brûlée a  l'orange and a cheese plate.  They even wrote Happy Anniversary on the plate!  The perfect end to a perfect meal!

The service was exceptional. Our waiter was able to tell us everything about our entrees and was always there to pour more water, wine or get us anything else we needed. The Somalia was wonderful as well and recommended a great pairing to our meal.

The food was good as well but not great. Considering this is suppose to be another redition of a fabulous French restaurant in France I was a little dissappointed. I've had better French food and it's definitely is not up to par with Rovers in Seattle or The French Laundry in Napa.

The prices are quite reasonable so I guess you pay for what you get.

I'm from Maine, and read about Le Crocodile in a Vancouver guide book which mentioend they served frog legs. I LOVE trying new foods, so I went there with my native Vancouver friend.

We were not dissappointed. We called about 20 mins before we arrived on a Saturday night and had no trouble being seated.

Service was great. The valet opened the door, hostess pushed my chair in for me and placed the napkin on my lap.

I had the avocado, tomato, crab salad which was so fresh and delicious. My friend had the goat cheese salad which I tasted and was scrumptous!

I loved the frog legs and my friend ordered duck foie gras and quail, also great. The chef provided a mini caribou and wild mushroom appetizer. He also provided a scope of sorbet with some liquor.

5 stars :) but be prepared to have a relaxed, longer than usual meal.

Our favourite regular French restaurant in Vancouver.

    Good service, consistent food.

Rack of lamb is very well made with lots of sauce on the plate, chocolate profiteroles quite delicious.

Tomato gin soup often overlooked, other classics include the onion tart and the duck liver terrine.

Very reliable, beats the many trendy to-be-seen new places in town any day.

We came here for lunch on our last day in Vancouver. It's a very cute French restaurant and had great service from the wait staff.

I had the lobster bisque for a starter and it had great flavor. The chef gave us a freebie amuse bouche which was a duck quiche. That was delicious! For my entree I had the seabass, which smelled kinda fishy, but didn't taste fishy. It was very tender and moist and so soft that it basically fell apart when you touch your fork to it. Yummy!

For desserts, we had the Tarte aux Pomme a l'Alsacienne which is warm alsatian styled apple tart with vanilla ice cream. Never had an apple tart this way and it was very unique and still delicious. We also had the Gateau au Chocolat Moelleux, which is warm soft chocolate cake with an orange reduction & nougatine ice cream. I'm not big on the orangey flavor with chocolate.  So it was just ok for me.

They gave us cute chocolates (milk and dark) in the shape of crocodiles after.

Didn't try the wine since I'm not a big fan of drinking midday. Walking around town flaming red is probably not ideal. :)

Must try if you're in the area and want to check out a nice French restaurant! :0

I really enjoyed my dinner here. The service was really awesome - everyone was super friendly and gave great suggestions. The Ambiance was nice too.

    And the food -

Bone Marrow - amazing. Very Juicy with a great flavor.
Duck foie gras - some of the best I've ever had. The bread kept coming too!
Frog Legs - great sauce and flavor.
Avocado, Tomato salad with crab - delicious and refreshing.

It's a must if you are visiting Vancouver and love French food!

Tres bien! Le Crocodile offers exceptional food, service, wine, port, ambience...you name it, it's a top 3 for me.  Le Crocodile has remained a top tier restaurant for 2 decades.  In a business where 5% of new restaurants are still around after 5 years, this might be the best review going.

    Bon manger mes amis!

Delicious French Food! Service was really good, they are very attentive to your needs. I love the waiter's accents. A very nice cozy restaurant. It was a Saturday night and we didn't have any reservations. They were able to accomodate 7 girls at the very last minute with no wait. At the end of the meal, they gave complimentary chocolates that were in the shape of crocodiles. This definitely made a lasting impression.

The wait for our food wasn't too long. But my one complaint would be parking. It was difficult to find parking on the street on busy Saturday night on Burrard Street.

This is a truly lovely French restaurant, with 5 star plus service ... but a major downside in their wine pricing.  Their wine list is nice, heavy on French wines, but the markup is shocking- and I am not easily shocked.

I will definitely go again, but next time I'm calling first and bring my own bottle ... pretty much whatever the corkage fees are, it will still be a deal.

Wonder Bread was on my table (For the price I pay, I think that's unexceptable) My pasta was mushy.  Foie gras had veins in it.  They better learn how to clean it.
    Service was Ok.

French cuisine does not get any better than this.  Every dish is a treat and the prime ingredients are not hidden behind over powering sauces - just enhanced by them.  The service is impeccable.  One of Vancouver's finest, but bring a thick wallet.
