We usually enjoy splitting a starter between the two of us. So, when our server indicated that the salads were small, we ordered two. I think our definitions of small are different because we could have very well split just one. It was nice, though- a nice mix of greens and a light sprinkling of dressing.

I got the Osso Buco with some sort of maple savory sauce on noodles. It was excellent.

Dessert was yummy. We'd broken tradition and got one each. Some fruit crisp thing and a slice of cake.

Service was fantastic, the vibe was warm and comfy, and if we were here longer I would've been more than happy to return.

I would probably give this about 2.5 stars, but some things here were done quite well and three is probably a more accurate rating.

Straightforward bistro food in a quaint setting.  Menu is somewhat varied, but sticks to the basics of beef, frites, some pasta and so forth.  Nothing too crazy.

Duck confit rolls are rather basic, but at least edible and enjoyable, nothing too crazy but unfortunately not very memorable.  The Escargot is served in a nice huge puff pastry with a great reduction, something worth getting for sure.

A unique soup was served that involved a mix of paprika, onion and of all things honey... It sounds bizarre but it's quite good.

I did not bother with classic steak and frites or mussels but went for a croque monsieur.  Perfectly flavorable melted cheese with memorable ham and sauce, they nailed this.  The side of fries though were horrible.  They were old, reheated, even served cold.  I would have actually sent them back, but had plenty of things to not concern myself with.

I was a bit disapointed with the basic table wine, it tasted incredibly watery even for house red, very odd.  The beer selection is un-remarkable.  Sugar pie is of course incredibly sweet, but also quite rich and delectable tasty with a light crust and not overly syrupy luckily.

I can't say I was terrible impressed, but there was some very good things here.  I'd consider a repeat but hopefuly I would get a better experience.

Our first meal, fresh off the plane, in Quebec City was at the very charming Le Cochon Dingue (The Crazy Pig!) in Lower City, and it assured us that this would be yet another delicious vacation.  We arrived to a bustling breakfast service and were quickly ushered to a comfortable table near the window with lots of sunlight.  Upon request, our waitress cheerfully presented with English menus.

We quickly made some wise decisions:

    1. Le Panini du Matin ($11.95) - an excellent tartine with eggs, cheddar, ham and basilic mayo tucked into grilled and pressed country bread, this was a spectacular breakfast sandwich, made better by the free substitution for french fries with homemade mayo (vs. the included home fries).  The sandwich also comes with a tiny yogurt smoothie and a full size espresso, cafe au lait or pot of chocolate.  I'd recommend the chocolate!

    2. Charlevoix Plate ($15.95) - a great choice if you like to have some sweet and savory together.  This brunch plate included half a flower shaped waffle loaded with fruit and maple cream along with home fries and a small portion of spinach and cheese egg scramble.  The maple cream was stunningly good!  The plate also includes a hot breakfast beverage

PARTING THOUGHT: Unfortunately, poutine is not served until the afternoon, so keep that in mind when you are deciding on your timing.  Don't be shy about asking for recommendations from the staff!  They know what they are talking about!  I hope I get to try the poutine and ribs next time!

Fellow yelpers you have led me astray.  The duck spring rolls sucked.  Way oily and nothing at all in the way of flavor.  This was followed by the duck poutine which just tasted like barbecue sauce dipped duck on a plate of average poutine.  The sugar pie was good but nothing to rave about.

The ribs were excellent, which is a saving grace.  Would go back for the ribs as long as you didnt make me order anything else.

The ambiance is not at all fancy either so go somewhere else if you want to impress your date.  Basically its a step up from a good ole American bbq joint.

Le hobbit, La Lapine Saute, and Echaud all looked like better choices.

Le Cochon Dingue (literally, "the crazy pig") is one of my favorite cafes in Québec City. Bask in the beauty of this town while you enjoy a nice meal at one of the tables lining the sidewalk in the summertime (or indoors if you're brave enough to face the Canadian winter and find yourself in QC during this time). Aside from the cute little piggy plaque hanging outside, I'll also never forget their delicious café au lait.

I followed my Yelp taste buds right to the duck confit spring rolls (thank you Yelpers!) and was not disappointed.

For my entree, I ordered the maple-wood smoked pork ribs. The waiter gave me a nod and said "best thing on the menu, good choice" and holy maple-wood jeebus was he right. Best ribs I've had in a long time.

Since this was my birthday dinner, I ordered my favourite desert, a four layered, amazingly delicious, carrot cake. It cake with a huge flare-like sparkler and a singining waiter.

GO HERE. GET THE RIBS. ENJOY!

My friend and I went directly to this restaurant after a nine hour train trip. We loved the cozy place at first glance.
While waiting at the door, we saw their amazing strawberry pie. That pie is berry red with lots of strawberry on top, i.e. couldn't look better, added on the to try list right away :)
We ordered the duck confit spring roll, ribs, and half bottle of Le Jaja De Jo to go with it. I know nothing about wine. So I won't comment.

Duck confit spring roll is a genius idea, definitely worth trying.

Ribs are just as good as people described. Maple syrup gives it a just right sweet taste. I feel I can eat the whole rack.

I enjoyed everything, Fries is seasoned, tasty. Even the bacon they put in the Caesar is perfect !

For dessert, my friend and I shared the strawberry cheese pie. Very nice strawberry   mixed with the cheese taste. I also ordered a cute bowl of latte.

Thanks le Cochon dingue,my dinner was happy and wonderful. Of course, thanks snowing Quebec city too

After an excursion to Saint-Anne for some adventure tourism in the form of dog sledding, we came to Le Cochon Dingue for our Christmas dinner.

Located on the most charming of Rues in the snow covered Lower Village of Quebec City, you couldn't ask for a more cozy spot.

The place was packed when we arrived, yet we waited just 5 minutes for our reserved table. Everyone was full of smiles and a warm welcome.  I appreciated the collective good cheer from the staff as they all were working extremely hard this holiday. We were surrounded by many families, who like us, were celebrating Christmas in a more casual & relaxed fashion.

Here you'll find bistro fare at its best. The standout on the menu was undoubtedly the Ribs, which my children devoured. Whatever their secret recipe is, my 3 mad, hungry boys agreed that these were the most delicious ribs EVER.

I could have taken them for the grand feast at the Hotel Frontenac, but their holiday was More perfect because they'd experienced the best ribs of their life.

For Moms reading this, I promise you'll enjoy the grilled Salmon as I did. And, for Dads, you'll favor the Steak Frites. Later you'll smile when the check arrives, reminding you that Le Cochon Dingue is one of the the best deals in town.

Came here for a snack while in QC.

The duck spring rolls were very good. I would definitely recommend them! They are just as described, egg roll on outside and duck confit on the inside. The sauce was a nice mix of sweet and savory.

The French onion soup was OK, not great, but OK. The top wasn't cooked/broiled nearly enough so the cheese didn't have a nice crisp to it. The soup was tasty, however. My guess is that they were just lazy with ours and that it is normally better!

The "real" hot chocolate was good. You gotta love dark and bitter chocolate though if you are going to enjoy it. My GF does and did, I don't but it wasn't mine anyway!

Definitely a place that is "non-french" friendly =)

After mistakenly going to le petit cochon dingue which is right next door, we figured out that they are indeed two separate restaurants. We were there for what would be considered either a very late lunch or a very early dinner. It was still packed to the brim. Our server was very friendly with a ready smile. After perusing the menu, we decided on the duck confit spring rolls, the French onion soup and the seafood pot pie. All were quite good. But the shining star of the meal was definitely the sugar pie dessert. We ordered this despite being beyond full. On the menu it is touted as being the best sugar pie in the city, and I wouldn't doubt it. We finished it in a minute flat. It was so good. I would highly recommend it.

Love this atmosphere of this bright-yet-cozy Lower Town bistro: it's bustling, with pretty waitresses in tight red tops, blue gingham tablecloths, flowers and a beautiful French-style bar in the middle of the fuss. We had lunch our first day there and it was fine: the smoked meat tartine was a little underwhelming, the pork osso buco a little greasy and overwhelming. Great fries. But at the suggestion of our hotel, we went back for breakfast the next day. And the breakfast...oh my God, the breakfast. It was a breakfast heaven, a breakfast delight of treats familiar and unfamiliar. I had the Duo campagnard: scrambled eggs tartine, mushrooms, bacon, hollandaise sauce, crepe stuffed with caramelized cinnamon apples, maple cream sauce, Swiss cheese and home fries. Incredible. The swiss cheese melted on top of the cinnamon apple crepe was the perfect salty-sweet compliment. The home fries, dark and crispy and smoky, were the best I've ever had. My husband had the Brunch platter: 2 eggs any style, bacon, ham, sausage, home fries, slice of cranberry bread, crepe in maple syrup sauce, baked beans and your choice of toast. It was a cornucopia of breakfast treats.

After reading other Yelpers opinions we ventured here for a mid week breakfast - OMG wow!

Every morsel was delicious! They make real coffee (a true long black) and my mushroom, spinach & bruchetta omelette was possibly the best I have ever had filled with fresh herbs and marinated mushrooms! It was served with warm, tiny delicious home fries and a petite mango smoothie - divine!

My honey had the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and Brie - he claims it was also delicious.

As someone who is gluten free I even took the risk and sampled my honey's warm buttered baguette with home made raspberry jam with whole raspberry in it - it was worth every mouthful!

Highly recommend it - we will be back tomorrow before we head home!

This place has the best truffles I've ever had, ever! Do yourself a favor and get a few of these before leaving. A perfect spot to drop in for some coffee and snacks while wandering around old quebec village. You can see the chefs baking and cooking up a storm in their open kitchen, wish I had a meal here since it looked like everything was being made with love. I was very pleased with my visit!

This was a GREAT place to eat dinner. We ate out in front of the restaurant, on the patio, and although initially the staff had told us that there would be a 35 minute wait, we were seated within 10 minutes of putting our names in. The patio area was very nice, especially because the restaurant is located in one of the nicest parts of the city, in my opinion, as well as one of the oldest (although all of the old city is gorgeous).

For starters, we got a few things: beet tartare with goat cheese, "Imperial Cheese Rolls" (goat cheese and pear wrapped into a flaky dough crust), and duck spring rolls (duck, pesto, and a raspberry sauce). By far, the best of the three was the duck spring roll; it was fresh, tangy, and delectable. The other two were also very good, but the goat cheese in the "Imperial Cheese Rolls" was a little too strong, in my opinion, and the greens that came with the beet tartare were a little wilted. You really can't go wrong with any of the three, but if I had to pick one appetizer to suggest to the person reading this, it would definitely be the duck spring roll.

For dinner, I had the Duck Poutine  (french fries, gravy, cheese curds, and duck confit). I was a little skeptical when I ordered, because I'd never had anything like that before, but the fact that I've never seen Poutine on a menu anywhere in America was enough for me to take a leap of faith and give it a try. And thank god I did, because it was INCREDIBLE. I can't really even describe the way it tasted... but I'd have to say that the flavor of the duck and the texture of the cheese curd were the two most prominent aspects of the dish. Some people may not like the feeling of chewing the curd, it was a little tough for cheese and it kind of squeaks against your teeth when you chew it, but I personally thought it was really unique and interesting. I loved it. This Poutine is probably the best thing I'm going to eat on this trip, no question.

Overall, I really liked Le Cochon Dingue. The atmosphere was nice and relaxed, the food was sensational, and the prices were reasonable. HIGHLY recommended to anyone that's going to be traveling in or around Quebec City!

It was OK.  The hostess was wonderful, walking us through the restaurant and then seating us at a 4 top when a two top was unavailable.  The restaurant has been open since 1979 and seems to attract a mix of tourists and locals.  We ordered moules and frîtes and a Croque Monsieur to share.  My frîtes arrived hot but Alan's were tepid, as was his Croque.  Not good.  He sent them back.  The waitress brought him another crock of frîtes which were warm.  He ate them and some of the mussels, which were pretty good.  Not the best we've had, but certainly better than others.  When his Croque was redelivered it was hot and there were MORE frîtes.  The Croque OK.  Not fabulous.  It wasn't an exciting lunch.  We could have eaten on the ship.

While walking through the oldest part of Quebec City, on what could've easily been the coldest day of the year, we stopped in Le Cochon Dingue ("the crazy pig") for lunch before starting the drive back to the US.

After a little research, this looks like it could be a chain-- which is not usually something we aim for... so this only means that this particular place is especially nice, since we had no idea and still loved it.

The staff greeted us warmly and did not rush us through our meal.

I had the Tartine Croque- monsieur: an uncomplicated open sandwich with ham, tomato, bechamel sauce and melted cheese on bread. Served with a small salad and shoe string fries. Delicious- I think I made a  yummy noise with just about every bite of that sandwich. CAD 14.00

My husband had the Dingue formula- a prix fixe selection of soup, salad, sirloin steak, all you can eat french fries, dessert and nonalcoholic drink for about CAD 30.00. I was not surprised that he finished everything... and also that he was definitely not hungry for the rest of the day.

Not too much money+ zero hassle +good lunch = me in a food coma, sleeping all the way back to the states.

    Yummers!

They were open late. The duck confit spring rolls were delicious. The veal I ordered was good but not amazing. However, the seafood pot pie my girlfriend ordered was completely wonderful. And the maple fudge cake we had for dessert was bite the back of your hand good.

On top of it the place is unpretentiously cute, and our waiter was very sweet and attentive. It made our last night in Quebec a treat!

Based on what I have been reading in reviews, Le Cochon Dingue is something of a chain restaurant, but I never would have guessed it .

With its festive snow-filled vintage yuletide, Quebec City is one of the most beautiful places to be during the Christmas holiday. During our recent visit we found two fabulous places to dine, obviously Le Cochon Dingue being one of them. We took the ferry to Levis where we met some truly lovely people whom we now call friends. As we were leaving to head back across the river, they suggested Le Cochon Dingue as a place for dinner. Knowing the locals usually know best, we followed their suggestion and we were quite glad we did.

Located along the riverfront in a reestablished historic building that boasts with European elegance; the only thing that made me consider, for a moment, to part company with Le Cochon Dingue was the name which implies pig or you could surmise as lots of meat on the menu, but we were in QC, to be expected.  After a frigid passage and a long walk of schlepping through QC snow and ice, we rambled into Le Cochon Dingue where it was remarkably welcoming, cozy and warm. We knew we would stay for as long as they would have us. We were immediately greeted by the host who was sincere and eager to find us a seat. It was a busy Saturday night and we were surprised to be seated quickly, in what felt like the best spot in the house...right  between the restaurant and coffeehouse and in direct view of walls and walls of scrumptious-looking desserts, coffees and teas.

Our waitress was professional, attentive and just distant enough for us to enjoy a lasting, sappy romantic dinner. The chef was accommodating and made several adjustments to our food, respecting our unorthodox diet.

Mon Francais est faible et mes excuses pour cela. Le Cochon Ding est un bel endroit a diner et ie souhaite le succes continu ces par restaurateurs avec leurs affaires topnotch. ~  Paix a tous

On our trip to Q city we ate here twice because it's right in the middle of the old village, it's really tasty, and it's reasonably priced. VERY busy, and cramped seating, but considering the location, it was just fine. The warm salad with brie and walnuts is decent - not amazing, but the open faced grilled veggie sandwich with a side of frites is quite delicious. Bill had the comfit du canard and said it was tasty but not outstanding. (He was wishing he'd ordered the ribs.) Overall, quite good food for the price and location.

For starters, we enjoyed the grilled oka cheese and duck confit spring rolls.  I liked the sauce for the cheese.

As a meal, the mussels salsa rosa was fresh but simple on flavor.  I was hoping for some sauce.  The fries...disappointing.

For dessert, the country-style coffee and apple cheese dessert was a nice finish.

This is a small chain of restaurants, though I picked up on that based on the logo t-shirt uniforms and other small touches. I do like the decor and location in the lower part of the city. As for the food, it's decent and hits the spot. The half slab of ribs is nicely prepared and falls right off the bone. It comes with a large caesar salad and many roasted potatoes accompanied by spicy mayo. The signature dish (cheaper cut of meat) was less impressive, and we would not order again. For dessert we had strawberry cheese pie, which was too sweet. Borderline diabetics should avoid that one.

The food served up at the Cochon was outstanding.  The crepes were beautiful, the cafe au lait was delicious, the omelet was cooked just right - we ate breakfast here twice.  I could have eaten here every day we were in Quebec, if I'd only known about it on the first day we got into town!

The waitstaff were super nice and very friendly - we felt very welcome, and did not feel rushed to vacate the table once we'd finished breakfast.

My friends and I came here for dinner during Carnaval (yes, this review is long overdue).  It's a great cozy restaurant that's perfect after spending the day out in the cold.  We were given bread and a jar of pickles to share. Yeah, a jar of pickles! They were bite-sized and I thought were just delicious.  Needless to say, they were long gone by the time our mains arrived.
I had the homemade duck confit pie that came with a side salad. The duck confit pie was good but I wished there was some sort of sauce in it since it was a bit dry. The mixed greens salad had a light vinegrette and made me feel better for the junk food I had that weekend.
    A couple of standouts:
Seafood pot pie - my friend asked if she should get the seafood lasagna or the seafood pot pie. In a snap, with no doubt she said the pot pie.  Done. It was delicious. If I didn't like duck so much, I would have gotten it.  The pie itself was nice and crusty on top and it was packed with lobster, crab, scallops, shrimps and potatoes in a cream sauce.
Sugar pie - okay, no doubt this is for those with a sweet tooth. It's rich, sweet and is definitely for sharing especially after a big meal. It's noted as the best in town so you can't go wrong and it's the probably the best way to go into a self induced food coma.

Reservations are recommended. We wanted to come the day before but the wait was going to be an hour so we made reservations for the next day.

This place is as much -- maybe more -- about the full experience as it is about satiating hunger. I smiled more than once because of the quirky decor, and dishes and glasses with kitschy charm.

The warm and intuitive staff will not only welcome the "cochon" in you, they'll play a hand in helping you let loose (i.e., pig out) on delicious Québécois treats and supporting plates.

I found my guédille scrumptious with its fresh seafood. You can't go wrong with dessert, particularly the cakes. (That said, get away with having only one meal that day!)

I loved Panache for breakfast, but this place was my sentimental favorite during our stay in Quebec for the Winter Carnival.  I felt like a dirty pig (translation for cochon dingue) after ordering The Brunch Platter: 2 eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, home fries, toast, crepe in maple sauce, cranberry bread, cheddar curd, and a raspberry-like sauce.  I washed all of that down with a bowl of coffee....mmm, heaven *burp*.

We LOOOVED this place.  There was a wait, but it was worth it.  We sat on a little elevated platform overlooking the bar.  Great cafe ambiance.  The waiter we had was a little spacey, but we didn't care when our food came.  we both had Croque Monsieur.... Out of this world!  The meal came with a little jar of pickles.

I think they just serve breakfast and brunch, but it is a don't miss when in Quebec.

Enjoyed a fantastic panini breakfast here. Wanted everything on the menu once I saw what everyone else had on their tables. Everything is fresh, light but tasty. Staff was delightful. High recommend.

I ate breakfast here while on vacation in June.  I was up pretty early and didn't have to wait for a table; in fact, I got to sit at a coveted outdoor table and enjoy the summer morning.  I ordered the "mountaineer's bowl"-- maple granola, raspberry yogurt, fruit, and a slice of cranberry bread.  The granola was delicious.  I'm assuming that the maple syrup was local because it tasted much better than any boxed granola I've eaten.  The cranberry bread was wonderful as well.  I originally didn't intend to eat all of the bread but I couldn't resist.  My waitress was super nice, and I really appreciated the multiple coffee refills.  Great way to start a day of sightseeing!

Was with a party of 4 and they all liked the food. The steak was good and the ribs were very well reviewed. My pasta (vegetarian btw) was pretty good, definitely better than average and not as good as I would expect a "meat and potatoes" place to make it. It was perfectly cooked with plenty of sundried tomatoes, spinach and cheese.

Service was decent and so were the prices. I would definitely go back again.

I love this little place. It's part of a local chain (not usually a fan of chains), and it's super-casual and and cute and comfy and it's great. It's kind of like a La Madeleine back in the US, but better. I'm not a big fan of La Mad, so don't let that put you off, though! I've heard it's great for breakfast and I think it would be good for lunch, too. We went the night we arrived in QC for a late dinner around 9 pm. I had the chicken pot pie, which was awesome! This was also where I was introduced to sugar pie, which was out of this world! So good that we went another night just for dessert! This is the kind of place that if it was in my neighborhood, I'd eat there once a week. Having sugar pie withdrawal now...

Dinner at Le Cochon Dingue on our first night in Quebec City was excellent and a lovely way to set the tone for a good visit.  Yes, it is a touristy place -- so is all of Vieux Quebec.  It is also welcoming and reasonably priced as compared with some of the restos closer to Place d'Armes & Chateau Frontenac.
I'm a big pot pie fan, so had the seafood pot pie, which was delicious -- salmon, shrimp, scallops, lobster & potatoes in a creamy sauce topped with puff pastry.  Sister enjoyed the maple-smoked ribs.  We tried the sugar pie (good but crust too thick) and decadent double chocolate cake -- left very satisfied.  Their desserts are baked a few doors away at Le Petit Cochon.
On our last night in Q.C. we returned and had the same main courses.  I was disappointed that my seafood pie was heavier on the potatoes and missing the scallops and lobster.  Still yummy but there may be a quality control issue that needs attention.

My wife and I ate here twice during our visit to Quebec.  The prices were very reasonable for the tourist district.  I had the ribs my first night in Quebec and was very pleased. The meet pulled easily from the bone and the flavor was quite good.  The small ceasar salad that came with it was good as well.  On our second visit, we had pork burgers for lunch. It was my first time having a pork burger, but if they are all like that, I will have to have more. If Le Cochon Dingue had cheaper beer I may have given it 5 stars.  However, the prices appear to be in line with the other places that serve beer in this area. I would go back if I come back to Quebec city.

This is a lovely restaurant in lower town across the street from the pier.  The food was delicious and the portions were generous.  I had the price fixe dinner with the mussels and all was delicious!

Vieux Quebec is a charming town by the port. I read reviews from Trip Advisor about this resto and it was exactly what we needed on a cold winter day. The resto is really cute and quaint, we had flower shaped waffles with delicious maple butter and classic eggs benedict. Service was great and food was comforting. And tons of boutiques in the surrounding area.
