History
Established in 2001
LASIK MD was founded in 2001 by Dr. Mark Cohen and Dr. Avi Wallerstein with one initial clinic in Montreal, Canada. Today, LASIK MD has laser centres all across Canada.
In 1998-2001, as the medical directors of Lasik Vision Corporation, Cohen and Wallerstein had overseen the development of the first "high volume" laser vision correction centers in the North America (high volume meaning more than 100 procedures per week). In 1998, Lasik Vision Corporation was the first laser vision correction provider in North America to offer "affordable pricing" and to market this in its advertising. At the time, this was a novel technique for a medical services company and allowed it to capitalize on a larger mass appeal for the procedure.
After an industry contraction in 2000-2001, doctors Cohen and Wallerstein coordinated the acquisition of the LASIK Vision clinics in Canada by private surgeon investors. These clinics became known as LASIK MD.
Meet the Business Owner: Dr. Mark Cohen and Dr. Avi Wallerstein W.
Dr. Mark Cohen co-founded LASIK MD along with Dr. Avi Wallerstein. He is the president of LASIK MD, and one of its two national medical directors. As a cornea and laser vision correction specialist, Dr. Cohen is responsible for teaching laser eye surgery to ophthalmology residents from the University of Sherbrooke, University of Montreal and McGill University.
Dr. Avi Wallerstein is one of its two national medical directors. As director of refractive surgery at McGill University and the Royal Victoria Hospital, Dr. Wallerstein teaches ophthalmologists-in-training and performs surgeries. Dr. Wallerstein is also assistant professor of ophthalmology at McGill.
