The little town of Lunenburg is very quiet on Sunday afternoons; the waterfront area which is comprised of a few blocks of restaurants and gift shops pretty much closes down for the day.
After visiting the Salt Shaker Deli with a few friends last week I wanted to go back and try a few more things on the menu. Our plan changed a bit when we realized that it wasn't open, so we decided to check out the offerings at Large Marge's diner on the next street over.
Large Marge's atmosphere is a mix of a 50's style diner (equipped with a milkshake machine and jukebox in the corner) and a typical maritime seafood joint. The combined genres work surprisingly well together and if you add in the hospitality of a small town the result is a relaxed environment, great for comfort food. -

We headed to Large Marge's last Sunday for a snack and were pleasantly surprised!
Traditional diner bar stools and booths abounded with funky juke boxes and old school fisherman themed wall hangings. Lots of regulars hanging out.
M tried the 'Lunenburger' which was deep friend haddock inside a bun. Hard to go wrong there I suppose. I tried the clams and gotta say- not totally impressed. Really rubbery with blackened tips at the ends which Mark described as 'just their feet'... : /
We also shared a vanilla shake which was delicious! Service was some of the best i've ever had. ever. bar none. -

It's a testament to this classic-feeling diner that my friends and I were moved to indulge in milkshakes despite the -8 temperature outside. Dishes here are what you'd expect from a diner with "large" in the name; big ol' portions of food that sits in your belly after you leave. My table ordered fish and chips, clam and chips and liver and onions. Hearty food indeed. The inside of the restaurant also lives up to the expectations diner-décor, but with a maritime edge. Think old Coca Cola memorabilia mingling with ship models on the walls.
I left Marge's happy but uncomfortably full, unfortunately I've no one to blame for that but myself.
