this restaurant totally satisfies my random cravings of spicy beef noodle in soup with a side of pork and vegetable dumplings.
well worth the money. home style cooking. fast service. consistent food quality. convenient location right across from metrotown. i chowed down here today in between my shopping spree (yikes!). -

Decided to try the beef balls with noodles. The texture, visuals and the taste of the beef balls was completely unappealing. I expected something closer to meatballs but they were difficult to bite into and rubbery.
It also smelled like burning plastic inside.
I don't think I'll go back... -

Beef Noodle Soup! Get it here :)
Homemade noodles - nice, and chewy.. keeps you slurping and slurping and slurping til each noodle is gone. Beef is very soft. I actually like my beef a lil bit on the more chewy side, but apparently.. people said the more soft and fall apart it is.. the better :P
Broth is consistent and flavorful. Yes there is no hot hot spicy, but it has spiceness flavor which is delicious. Large bowl is good to feed two girls, or one really hungry man. Has delicous pickled vegetables too! Annddd it doesn't leave you with a heavy MSG filled after taste! (I don't remember if this place is MSG free or not).
Prices for each bowl of noodles are mediocre ~ less than $10
You see people young and old eating here. And if they don't finish their broth...(yes just the broth), the pack it up to go. Just shows how much appreciation there is for this place.
Bf always loves coming here. And he's quite the picky eater :) Kinda says something! -

Spicy Beef Noodle Soup!
3.5 stars but feeling generous & rounding up.
A large order is enough to share between two people. Personally, I would just go with the plain o' beef because you get a lot of meat and that ish is tender! Hardly any chewing needed because the flesh just tears apart the minute you apply minimal jaw pressure. Plus, I liked how there was no fat on the beef. Some places you have to sit there and pick away at the lard which can get quite annoying. Not here!
We also got the spicy tendon and beef noodle to share. Same deal as the beef noodle soup but you get a boat load of tendon. I'm not big on that so that's why I say just get beef only but if you love that stuff, fire away.
The locals we ate with (who picked the restaurant) said the soup base was a little off that day. I threw in some extra chili because it wasn't spicy to begin with, plenty of vinegar, and some of that spicy radish we picked up at the counter by the cashier. Mixing in all that definitely made the soup more rich & tasty. The cold pickled cucumber side dish was also a great compliment to our noodles. Walk up to that counter and check out some of the side dishes they have to offer, those are self served.
The steamed dumplings were sub par, they can easily be passed on.
Whether or not the soup base on this day was off or not, I still say it was an enjoyable lunch. The "homemade" noodles were cooked long enough to become soft just like the meat. It was a simple and affordable meal (maybe $10ish/person). The restaurant can be somewhat hidden because it's in an awkward corner of a plaza surrounded by a bunch of other restaurants and shops on the first floor. The addy says Kingsway but it's really facing Neslon street. The small place got crowded really fast so that tells me people knows what's up. -

This place used to be GREAT! I loved this restaurant and used to go all the time, but not anymore...I've been to it in recent years, and their food are totally downgraded to a point...their beef noodle soup used to be SOO good but when I eat it now, I feel like it's simply a "SOY SAUCE" noodle soup. All you can taste is the soy sauce, it's not like a beef noodle soup anymore. And I'm not the only one that thinks so...my friends and co-workers used to eat at this restaurant a lot too. One time when I went with my co-worker, he also commented on how bad it tastes, he said all he could taste is the soy sauce. I'm not sure if it's because they changed cooks or something, but yea...it tastes REALLY bad now compared to before...In terms of service, their service is usually okay, but there was one time where the server was giving me attitude problem and practically lecturing me just because I wanted to do take-out...like what the heck...so yea, I stopped eating at this restaurant now...I LOVE beef noodle soup but this is not the place to go anymore.

What has happened to LSD? I came here last time because the Cattle Cafe had a huge wait list, so we decided to head next door to LSD. We thought it was closed because we saw no lineups and literally no customers. We only saw two tables with customers when Cattle Cafe was completely full and at least 7 people waiting outside the door.
I order the usual large bowl of beef flank with tendon in noodles. The portion is humongous, I couldn't finish all the noodles. I saw a couple ordering just one large bowl and sharing it, doing it the Asian way. The tendons are too big in my opinion and the beef is not tender enough. Although, it seem to be a little more tender then my last visit. Maybe, they are reading these reviews and finally getting the point. The broth is quite bland and not spicy enough even when you request it to be spicy. The saving grace was their dumplings. It was very tasty.
This is not the best Taiwanese noodle place in Vancouver or Burnaby. But, it is good enough to have a reserve recommendation. If you are craving for a good bowl of spicy beef noodle in Metrotown, go to Huaxi noodle Specialist in Crystal Mall. -

Burnaby, BC
I ordered the #1 small and spicy ($6.95) - which is beef flank with handmade noodles. First off, the small is a fairly big portion! It's comparable to most other Taiwanese noodle places that serve one size (which is normally big to my standards).
The only difference is taste. The broth actually has taste here - many places seem to be so bland that it's easy to neglect the soup - which is not the point of having a bowl of soup!! Although I'm praising the fact that the broth here is heavier and beefier tasting, I have a gripe. I ordered the spicy (as opposed to mild/regular) and it was nowhere near spicy at all. In fact, maybe she gave me a mild - who knows, but it definitely isn't spicy. Jen was saying that with the old chef, a spicy bowl was really spicy. Weird.
The pickled radish on top complimented the otherwise mediocre taste of the beef flank. I do have to say that this was the meatiest and interesting beef soup I've ever tried - with barely any fat and the meat being more dense than soft. I think because it was more dense, it didn't pick up any of the flavour from the soup or marination.
The noodles were perfect, no complaints there. It was served still chewy but soft and with a good, not too starchy taste to it. -

I love beef noodle, but not all are worth your time. Even in Taiwan, there are beef noodle restaurants that you'll never forget, either for good...... or for bad reasons.
Since I live in Burnaby, I've eaten at Lao Shan Dong several times; I've tried a number of their dishes, but my focus is rating beef noodle soup in the Lower Mainland, so for the 4th time, I ordered their item number 1, basic beef flank noodle soup, not spicy.
To start this off, I have to compliment their speed; the soup arrived in about 2 minutes, including our other dishes; that's great.... right?
As usual, I rate the beef noodle on its beef, broth, noodles and cabbage. The beef, even though it was fatty, was dry, really dry (C+); the broth was bland and forgettable (C); the cabbage was the highlight of this soup, but it was actually too sour, and I didn't even think that was possible (B+); the funny part of the whole thing is that apparently, the restaurant's name suggests that they make their own noodles; every time I've had Lao Shan Dong's soup, the noodles have tasted like they came right out of the box and were way overcooked; not chewy, not thick, just disappointing (C).
Overall, the soup gets a C+, but for a restaurant that's been doing this for over 50 years in Asia, I'd expect a bit more. -

I'm not Taiwanese. I'm not Vancouverite.
I didn't even have Beef Noodle while visiting TW.
I'm just a Noodle lover.
How I love the Noodles is none of your business though. :P
LSD is something that I appreciate even when there are minor imperfections. I'll let either the TWnese or Vancouverite pick LSD apart but from my standpoint its enjoyable nonetheless.
Beef Flank Tendon Noodle Soup($8.50/small)
Noodles have good bite-back response while the soup tend to be quite full-bodied and was on the sweeter side even when I asked for half spiciness. Next time, IF there is a next time I will ask for 100% or 125% chiliness to get some headsweats going.
The Beef Flank was tender even the first piece was overly surprising falling apart tender as it was more of a slice form than a cube format which holds together a bit better. The Tendons were were tender soft as well much like ones in Pho but carried the Broth quite well.
I did end up with ONE last piece of tough Tendon but that was out of about 5 pieces so I wasn't exactly missing out. I didn't realize how close it was just outside MetroTown either. Very convenient for some decent Noodles.Listed in: 4+ ****Stars****, Vancouver'ing for the Week

When they finally put me on deathrow and ask me for my last meal, beef noodle soup is definitely one of those items that will be listed.
i LOVE beef noodle soup. Coming from Los Angeles, i have scoured this dirty city for the best bowl, and still havent not found one that was consistently good, and equal to those bowls served back in asia.
So on my annual trip to Vancouver, i told myself i would end up eating one bowl.. or 2..... because i knew the chinese food in Burnaby is much better than anything they serve back in the states.
My cousin brought me here, and i was pleasantly surprised. Still not the best bowl ive had in north america, but easily one of the better bowls ive had in a while.
The portions here are ginormous.. i was hungry on this day, so i ordered the large thinking it would be semi decent, and i could order something else on top of that.... big mistake. the bowl was just gigantic. The flavor of the broth is well flavored and has depth... depth of flavor is certainly hard to find. my complaint however, is that i also wanted it spicy... which this place doesnt even come close to that word.
I was satisfied since its better than most ive had in california, but man... so sad it wasnt spicy.
***
LIKES: Beef noodle soup, LARGE portions, and the mixed meat plate is good too.
DISLIKES: Not spicy.
VERDICT: Had this place made their broth spicy, it would have been one of the best bowls ive had all over north america.... and i travel a lot... -

Went here based on the reviews I read... The Spicy Beef and Noodles was Great (dish #S7).
Not much for atmosphere, but worth a trip. -

After check out many reviews, went o this place last week.
I ordered spicy beef noodle soup. The beef is soft enough to melt in your mouth. The soup is ok. My friend order beef tendon noodle. Tendon is too hard to chew.
I gave one point for two reason :
1. The waitress use her bare hands to crab our bean cure. Yes the same lady who just order our food. I saw it on the way to the rest room.
2. I found a bug dead body in my soup.
So here is 1star review.
Gracias! -

Best dan dan mein I've ever had, hands down. The noodles were perfectly chewy.
The bf had the spicy beef noodle soup with tendons and though it wasn't spicy, it sure was tasty!
The pork and cabbage dumplings are delicious as well.
And to top it all off, the prices are super cheap. Two bowls of tasty noodles, a plate of dumplings and a pot of tea for $22 CAD. NOT BAD! -

After reading all the reviews for LSD, I was excited to venture to Burnaby for some beef noodle goodness since the weather has been so frigid. We parked in the free lot on Nelson and walked to the restaurant, where there was a small line. Fortunately, turnover was quick (I was hungry!!!!) so we got a seating for 2 in about 5 minutes. We ordered a large bowl of half beef and half tendon, dumplings and a side dish of bamboo shoots.
Our bamboo shoots came first, and at my dining partner's first glance, I could already tell that it wasn't going to be anything great...too sweet and they looked like it was store bought. Well, at least I had my beef noodle soup to look forward too...or so I thought. Our steaming large bowl came out and it looked so promising! Until, I took my first taste of the broth...it was bland and I needed to add a lot of their chili sauce to flavor it. The noodle didn't have that extra chew that most hand noodles have. The beef and tendon were mediocre. I couldn't believe we drove out of our way...the highlight of our meal was the dumpling dish.
Oh well, at least this trip helps me reaffirm where the best beef noodle restaurant for me is...sorry LSD. -
Review from Orian I.
This was incredible. I mean incredible!
I love this little place, it's crazy and well worn. The food is incredibly good and you can't beat the prices.
we had fried tiny fish with peppers, jelly fish salad, 10 dumplings (hand made and beyond awesome) and 3 different noodle dishes.
The best really was the original beef noodle soup spicy. it's not very spicy, it's more like they gave it a little jump start which i loved. We also got the noodles with pork sauce, interesting and kind of sweet, and the beef sauce on dry noodle. different flavor than the noodle soup, but incredibly good. I got this one mild just in case.
All in all it was one of the best places we went to when we visited. we got out of there with all that food for only $32 plus tax and tip. I'd recommend this to anyone.Listed in: My trip across the boarder-…

Ah LSD, the sweet memories, the psychedelic feelings I get while eating here. Heavily reviewed place and it's pretty busy during the normal meal times.
Ambience (2.5/5) - Cramped, busy and generally average noodle shop atmosphere.
Food (3.5/5) - I usually get the half-beef and half-tendon spicy noodle soup and the pork dumplings. The spicy broth is more of a sweet, chili-oil based kind of kick....not mouth scorching that's for sure. The dumplings are great here and one of the reasons I come here for lunch.
Service (2.5/5) - This place is hit or miss. Sometimes the server is attentive but the place gets really busy usually and it's hard to get any service here at times. It's a cash only place, I don't mind that. However, when the register runs out of small bills during the lunch rush, that's just not acceptable. They had to run out to the bank to get more small bills, the place should be more prepared given that it doesn't accept any other form of payment.
I still recommend this place to eat, but I won't build this place up to be a beef noodle haven.Listed in: Noodles Pour Toi.

Good choice of appy's. Beef soup was a bit too salty for me and NOT authentic enough. I love the beef tendons though and noodles were good. So far, I always order the beef noodles and would definitely like like to try their other noodle selections.
Service is good and decent. Prices are reasonable. Definitely recommended for a place to go for quick lunch or if you have a craving for Taiwanese appy's and beef noodles. I suspect they do use MSG or some sort of spicy chemicals as I always get sleepy after eating there. My body is sensitive that way to spices and MSG and gets sleepy...lol
I would still go back again despite the sleepiness factor though because they have quite a good variety on their menu and I have more items to try! -

You've heard of Soup Nazi? Well, there is a waitress here whom I refer to as the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup Nazi. She commands her squad of younger waitstaff. You needn't understand mandarin to know she is barking orders at them at uzi speed.
This place can get very busy. If you're waiting, you're given a menu and expected to know your order by the time you're seated. A couple of times, my party and I were asked to order while standing in line. Fair enough, it's a slurp stand and turnover is fast.
You are allowed to chew your food. Here are the best items to chew on:
1) Spicy Beef Noodle Soup
2) Mustard Greens and Pork Noodle Soup
3) Pork dumplings (swirl in a concoction of vinegar, soy sauce, and hot sauce)
4) Cold seaweed appy
5) Seasonal veggie appy
6) Tofu and preserved egg appy
It's a great enough deal that would make both Soup Nazis smile.... -
Review from Melody P.
My sister and I drove a friend from Seattle to Vancouver. She highly recommended this noodle house for braised beef noodles. I have to be honest. I've been to Vancouver BC few times. This is the first time I think the food was NOT GOOD! My braise beef noodles are better than this.
Ok! This is why: The meat and tendon were not tender enough. The worst is the meat and tendon have no flavor. However, if you eat them with soup, it's just salty enough that you can swallow. Otherwise, having some chill paste is another option.
Not sure if we went there too late or something (we arrived there around 8ish). The waitress who helped us was not very happy and had some attitude there with us. -
Review from Simon K.
This is one of the best places in the GVR for Beef Noodle Soup, a small little restaurant located close to Metrotown, just around the Bestbuy building, this little gem of a spot serves some of the tastier servings of Beef Noodle that I have come to love.
Most of the soup noodle dishes that are on the menu can be ordered in either regular or spicy soup. The spicy is not that spicy, so if you can, I suggest you go for it. The beef is nice and tender, and the tendon is real soft, not like other places, and that was a surprise. Also they have many side dishes that can be ordered, and already are presented at the front, from cold seaweed appy's to seasonal veggies, etc... they are all on the last page of the small menu that you get.
Another thing, they have real good dumplings in your choice of chicken, beef and pork. All of the main dishes are filling, and even if you go in with a starving stomach, you probably are going to come out feeling real full. I have been tricked time and time again while eating the noodles, and ordering more, and coming out feeling stuffed!
The area of this place is small, and a little cramped, so do not expect comfort! (you have been warned) And occasionally the food comes out quicker than ordering at McDonald's, so be prepared to eat. They do not open late, only until 10 PM. They do have parking on the side in the apartment there, since they don't have a private lot for themselves.Listed in: Favorite Food Places

* Definitely one of the better Taiwanese beef noodle places *
Thank you to Ken K. (http://www.yelp.com/us...) for suggesting this spot after his careful reading of Chinese language websites in the Vancouver area. Good tip, Ken!
Sometimes crowds don't lie. This spot was crowded, but they quickly found me a seat.
I was impressed with how efficient and friendly the service was. They only have about 10 tables, but I counted at least 4 waitstaff that were moving the fastest I have ever seen in a noodle place in Vancouver. They sat me within 30 seconds of coming in, and then watched to see when I was ready to order from a far (without rushing me at all). When I looked up to signal them they were instantly there to take the order. The food arrived 2-3 minutes later - perfectly prepared. Oh, and the service was really friendly too!
Had the standard test dish of spicy beef noodles with flank and tendon. What a generous portion! (Kind of explains the slightly higher prices)
The noodles had the perfect chew to them, and they were plentiful. The broth had a nice balance between heat, sourness, and beefiness. There was an MSG buzz to it, but not overpowering - more the enhancing level.
The tendons were excellent. Large whole pieces cooked to the perfect consistency. The beef flank was perhaps the weakest part of the dish, and the thing holding them back from 5 stars. It was a bit too dry. I think they either used a cut with not enough fat, or didn't stew it long enough. I buried the beef deep in the bowl and let it start to soak up more soup to soften - but even by the end of the bowl it was still not as tender as I like.
This is a really respectable noodle house - one of the better ones in Vancouver by far. If they could get the beef to be just a bit more tender they would have a full 5 stars from me!Listed in: Vanoodle, Vancouver Taiwanese Food, Thanks, Yelp!

I want to visit while visiting Vancouver! Simply amazing braised beef noodle bowl! The beef was so tender and the broth was amazing! You have to order the pork dumplings! Just like mom used to make! Will be back next time I'm in Vancouver!

BEEFY GOODNESS!
This is the place to go for good taiwanese beef noodle soup w/ hand pulled noodles. Starters were the cold sliced beef flank and spiced boiled peanuts which were amazing!
Went with the beef flank and tendon soup. Nice portions of flank and soft tendon. The noodles were very nice quality, good chewiness and flavor. We also ordered about 30 dumplings to help top things off. Prices were very reasonable and the place appeared to be popular with the locals. Given the number of great restaurants in the this town that is no small feat.
If you are in town come here!Listed in: Vancouver Highlights

I have heard a lot of hype about this place. Some people even go as far as saying this is THE BEST beef noodle in Vancouver. Even more so, they claim that the beef noodle here resembles the kind you find back in Taiwan. Now, i am from Taiwan, and I know a good bowl of beef noodle when I taste one.
None of the compliments above were justified whatsoever, at least when I went there on two occasions....
Let's start with the good stuff first....
Ambiance: I actually, for some reason, kind of like the interior decor of this place. Compared to other beef noodle houses, this place is roomy and more on the comfy side. Unfortunately, this is the only part that "wins" in my book.
Food: The soup is the most important factor when it comes down to beef noodle. Yet, it is bland and has almost no taste.... The appetizers are alright, but nothing overly special. The portion is good, however. You will surely leave this place with a full stomach.
Value: The beverages are outrageously expensive. Among the other beef noodle houses, this one is slightly more costly overall.
Service: How hard is it to get an order right?
"Hi, I would like a bowl of beef noodle, large please"
And somehow, the order came out wrong.
But hey, at least the guy who was waiting the tables has a nice haircut....?
They should go to Denny's and see what real service is!
But all jokes aside, I wouldn't go back here for the overcooked beef and tendon, and I certainly won't miss the noodle or the soup.
Verdict: If you crave for beef noodle and want to go to a place that tastes better and costs less, go to the Crystal Mall food court... and I am serious. -
Review from adam b.
Had the beef noodle soup as i was told by the server that was best. The noodles were definitely fresh and th soup had some nice flavor. I like the fact that this dish is unusual from the other asian restaurants I have been to (and I have been to tons). Enjoyable but not sure if I would return as I like other soups more (pho, korean tofu, etc).

Small and very busy noodle house located near Death by Chocolate, just off Kingsway.
Went there for lunch on a weekday, and had to wait for a table, and was given a menu while we were waited. The moment we were seated, they wanted to know what we were going to order--I don't work that fast, apparently they want you to decide while you wait.
I had the Beef ball noodle soup. Is it really beef BALLS? I have uploaded a pic for you to decide and tell me. Still don't know, but I couldn't make myself eat anything but the noodles--the "balls" looked a bit spam-ish and the tiny bit that I tried was chewy and not my kinda thing.
The soup was good, is you are Ok with lots of cilantro (I know people who hate cilantro), scallions and general beefy-ness.
Bottomline, you don't go here for ambiance, you go here if you like beef and "home made" noodles--almost no chicken or veggie choices to speak of. -

OMG. I love Lao Shan Dong noodles. Traditional hand-pulled noodles hits the Taiwanese beef noodle spot for me.
I always go for spicy and order sides of the beef shank and dumplings. The broth is amazing and i love their garlic chili sauce. YUM YUM! I dream of this place when I'm in NYC...*drool* -

As far as Taiwanese Beef Noodles go - this place has hands down the best I've had - albeit I haven't been to a lot of Taiwanese Beef Noodle places.
But I know my noodles and soup.
Excellent noodles and even better soup. Great portion - did I mention I love the noodles? Obvious cash only place - with quick service, right across from Metrotown.

i'm taiwanese so i've had my share of childhood beef noodles.
this is the first place i've been to where i disagreed with most yelpers.
some people SWEAR by this place.... why?!
i went around 2pm, busy but not packed. ordered the spicy beef & tendon noodle. noodles were great -al dente, yeay.
beef was overcooked - chewy spewy.
tendon was overcooked - melted in my mouth -ew.
the soup was alright but nothing special imo.
i've been to better places whether they were nicer or more hole-in-the-waller. i have to admit they served a big ass bowl of noodles but i found myself miserable half-way through the bowl. i might go back and try this mustard greens pork wutever
5 stars for overrated mos def. -

I have to agree with some that this place ain't doing Taiwan justice. It's great for what it is... but it's not really the Real Deal in terms of beef noodle soup. The beef isn't cooked quite right, and the rest of the menu is lacking in a lot of my favorite Taiwanese dishes.

One of the best beef tendon places that I've been so far. The noodle texture was just right and the soup was very tasty too. The preserved veggie is a nice touch. Why 3 stars? This is because I also tried their famous beef noodle soup. The beef was dry, chewy... really it was simply not good.
Though I only went there once, my other friends who live close by went there multiple times and never had good beef once. My advice: If you are into tendon like me, you will not regret making a trip to this place. -
