Two caveats: I've never gotten anything other than a haircut here and I always get it short and simple. So to any everyone who's looking for a mani-pedi, waxing, or prom hair, I can't really help you. But, if you are looking for a good, reasonably-priced haircut, Gina is definitely your gal.

I've been going here since 2006, when I took the plunge and opted for an even remotely stylish haircut. I've lost track of how many visits I've paid to Lan Salon, and the few times I strayed from Lan were nothing but mistakes.

Gina is very meticulous and doesn't miss a single detail of my head. Whether it's cleaning up the area behind my ears, grooming my neckline, or thinning out my sideburns, she's on it. The icing on the cake is when she rinses out my hair before the final drying and styling. I still prefer to go home and shampoo out any remaining fuzz; but if ever I have to hit the town right after my haircut, I know Gina's got me covered.

I've brought friends to Gina and they leave looking even better than me. She's even fixed hair mutilated by over-confident attempts at self-styling.

So whether your looking for a basic trim or are facing a hair emergency, go take a spin in Gina's styling chair.

After 10 years searching for a good haircut in SF and Oakland ranging from $10 - $150, I finally found Lan's Salon.

$20.  Ask for Lan.  She's attentive,  thorough, professional and dreamy.  I can't even tell after she's cut my bangs.  Great with Asian hair.

It started with my hare-brained idea to rinse my fine, curly hair with apple cider vinegar. Well, I have since learned that curly-headed gals have no business drying out their hair with ACV. Plus, it stinks.
Anyway, since I'd dried out and damaged my hair with this little holistic home science experiment, I thought I should trim off the ends.
So I Yelped and came up with Lan Salon.
    BAD, BAD, BAD.
I showed a photo of my desired cut to Kim, and asked her to trim it a bit, but she completely HACKED OFF ALL THE HAIR ON THE BACK SIDE OF MY HEAD!
I am a professional middle-aged woman with a career and it doesn't exactly behoove me to look like one of those kids begging on Telegraph Avenue. But there it is.

Now this is the story all about how
My hair got long, and made me frown
Now i'd like to take a minute, just sit right there
I'll tell you all about the place by my bus stop that cut my hair

In Southern California, born and raised
That's not important here, just covering that base
Kicking it off Shattuck, I found Lan Salon
Heard from some Yelpers that their haircuts were bomb
When I walked up their prices seemed good
Just $15 for a haircut in my neighborhood?
I talked to one sweet lady and she told me to sit down over there
She said, "Give us twenty minutes and we'll cut your hair."

I got in the chair and she grabbed her shears
Then flashed me a smile in one of the mirrors
She asked me how I wanted my hair
And I said, "You decide! I really don't care."

She finished up no more than ten minutes later
I looked at my 'do and dug my new flavor
I opened my wallet and tipped what was fair
Then winked at my stylist and told her thanks for the fresh hair

Loved my haircut. I had one of those days where I as just sick of my hair, it felt flat on my head, it was too long, got stuck in my backpack, meh. So, i decided to yelp a place really quick to get my hair did. My first impression of the place is, its spacial and comfortable. The beauty salon actually does nails, coloring, pedi, and hair! (so versatile!)

I had Lan, she asked me what I wanted, I gave her a picture but pretty much I told her everything I didn't want. Lan immediately understood exactly what was wrong with my hair (current-state) and grabbed her razor and got right to it.

What is LOVE, is that she used a razor. Honestly, if you want lots of layers and you want it to blend well, make sure your hair stylist can use a razor. Lan took her time, made sure everything was aligned.

For men: this is the place for you! They are quick and they know what they are doing. The whole time I was there, the majority of the customers were men coming in for their monthly trim.

After reading a very recent review on Lan's Beauty Salon, I decided I'd come here over Lhasa's. I looked into both and read through the reviews, they both seemed pretty good...

I wish I looked into it a bit more now.

I brought some pictures of the hairstyle I wanted, but Gina showed me other pictures from books she had. I don't think she was clear on what I wanted, and she ended up giving me a lot of layers for a short cut. In the pictures I showed her, the hair wasn't really layered much, more of a straight cut.

Also, I didn't expect the cut to be $25. I thought it was going to be $20. I wish she had told me earlier that it would  be five dollars more for BLOW DRYING and styling. She didn't wash my hair or anything. I was a bit unhappy about that part, especially given that I wasn't exactly happy about my haircut (it didn't really look like the picture I had shown her).

Sometimes my hair looks okay, but I was really expecting more from here. My bangs are not the length I had asked for. And you know that bangs take a while to grow out... so I have to pin them up sometimes.

Aside from the haircut, Gina is nice and the place is pretty big. They do nails and waxing too so maybe they're better in that area? I wish I had gone to Lhasa's because I saw that they solely focused on haircuts after passing by it.

Please note, this review is only for the nail services and general salon condition.

I took advantage of a free 1/2-hour while in Berkeley to finally get a long-overdue pedicure. Although the final product looked good the person servicing me was very slow... I was in the salon for about 45min and that was even with me only giving the nail polish 5 mins to dry since I was running super late at that point... To sum it up:

    Pros:
Cheap, weren't busy when I stopped by on a Thurs night, clean and updated looking interior

    Cons:
Slow service and the place smelled TERRIBLE - kind of like a sewer leak... Hope they got that corrected since my appointment.

Excellent service. And complete beauty care.

I have used their services for over 5 years now. Coloring my hair at least 4 times a year, sometimes getting highlights. My hair looks very healthy and I always get compliments on the color and cut.
The results are comparable to expensive salons. Lan's technique in color is great.
Also they do a great job on waxing and eye brow shaping.
As for the mani/pedicure concerns it is also the best of the area. My pedicure lasts for over 2 weeks as freshly applied, and my nails are healthy.

I always say I am not one to take hair very seriously. I grow it long, chop it off and in between I put it in a messy bun. I'm easy.

My hometown in LA does not offer a quality cut under $75, so when my lovely best friend told me I could get a great haircut for $20, the bargain hunter in me perked up. It's just hair. What could possibly go wrong?

After witnessing my friend get a cute new 'do, I was feeling confident. In my hand was the picture of my dream haircut: an asymmetrical bob, one side longer than the other but even in the back, with long side swept bangs. If I do say so myself, it would have looked smashing on me. Would have, if Gina gave me the cut I asked for.

My main concerns were that it not be too short in the back, that I have long bangs and that the asymmetry is from side to side, not front to back. What did I end up with? Multiple tiny, short layers in the back, miniature bangs and two even long sides.

To be fair, it isn't a bad cut and I believe it actually looks good on me. However, it isn't at all what I wanted. I think Gina is a talented hairstylist, but I think there was a serious problem with communication. I am going to reveal my ignorance and admit that half the time I could not understand what she was saying and looking back, I don't think she understood my concerns at all. She seemed so excited once she was finished, so I feigned glee, but I am really unhappy.

Why three stars if I hate my haircut? This is not a bad salon and I don't even fully blame Gina. I was asking for a drastic and relatively complicated haircut, so I should have been either more forthcoming in what I wanted or less cheap. Gina is a sweet woman and she gave my friend a nice haircut, so for standard cuts this is a good place to go. Unfortunately I will splurge next time and finally admit that I do take my hair seriously.

This is review for Gina and hair cuts. I was finishing up some work in Berkeley and decided to get a hair cut since it had been ages. I was already on University Ave, and after decided between Lhasa and Lans, I went with the latter since I had heard more about it.

I was a drop-in and luckily the only one in there at the time, so I was immediately seated. The woman introduced herself as Gina and asked me what I wanted. I was a little vague, as I told her I just wanted a trim, some layers, and to take off split ends. She told me what she thought would look good, verifying it by showing me many pictures from different hair books to make sure I liked it. I told her I trusted her and to do whatever looked good.

She snipped away while making friendly chit chat with me. She didn't do anything annoying like poking fake nails in my eye or combing my ears like some other places, and my hair cut came out exactly as the picture she pointed out to me -- it looked goooood if I do say so myself. It came out to only $20 and I tipped her $5. Only minus is that for that price, I didn't even get a hair wash like some other salons I had been to, but the upside is that she did straighten and style my hair while other salons charge you for the blow-dry.

I met up with a friend at Starbucks and the first compliment I got was on my hair, so I'd like to think that it was a successful trip. Will definitely come back when I need another touch up.

I just got a great hair cut by Gina. I desperately needed a haircut before Chinese New Years and Lan Beauty Salon popped right up on my Yelp app. After reading a few rave reviews, I decided to make an appointment to see Gina.

Gina was very sweet and so nice to spend time with! She asked me what I wanted and the best part was that she suggested some ideas too. She really made sure that I liked my haircut, which I appreciated. I came in with very long (too long) hair and now I have very nice layers (and she kept the length!) I really like my haircut and will definitely be seeing Gina again soon.

And my lovely haircut was only $23!

I am asian, have thick short hair. I was looking for a very unique cut but I brought in a picture of myself with the haircut and I came in with the haircut I wanted, just a little bit longer.

I came out with completely different hair. Way too short in the front, thinned everywhere, and just a complete disappointment.

Gina cut my hair and she asked a lot of questions. She showed me pictures of sides and backs. I said yes or no, thinking that she was still aiming for what I had brought in but I think she instead gave me what she had pointed to in the pictures.

To be honest, I don't think Gina knew how to cut my hair so that it would look like the picture I brought. To be fair, I've had this problem with other places. It sees like thick hair is no longer in. Every hairdresser I go to wants to thin it. It just makes me look ridiculous though. And when I ask hairdressers not to thin my hair, only a very few will listen to me because they think I don't understand how to cut hair (which is true, but I know my hair and what I want)

In any case, not the place to go to if you know exactly what you want. It could possibly be good if you aren't quite sure what you want but I don't know, this was so far off from what I wanted and I'm so unhappy about it that I don't think I'd suggest it to friends.

I'm going back to Oakland Chinatown. It has $9 cuts and they'll do what I ask.

Lhasa across the street had a wait. I feel like these two salons are in some sort of epic rivalry because they are across the street with the same service and almost-same prices. Honesty looking at the sign LAN made me think of a LAN party.

I sat down with Lan of Lan Beauty Salon, and hoped for the best. I don't get a buzzer cut like most Asian male customers here. Actually, there were 2 other said-Asian-male customers getting a buzzer cut. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.

Since they were done within 10 minutes of starting, I didn't have to wait long. I told Lan that I wanted a scissor-only cut. She told me it'd be no problem.

Pretty soon I was confident that she knew what she was doing because she started trimming around with regular shears to shape my hair and paying careful attention to detail about how much she cut. She told me that she'd come back to make it shorter when layering it. She was right - she finished up my haircut about 20 minutes later when she mostly used the thinning shears to give my hair a nice texture.

I'm pretty satisfied with the $15 haircut. I'd go again for my scissor cut for sure. Beats waiting at Berkeley Hair Studio for a rushed haircut.

I was a walk in at 6pm, and they were nice enough to take me. This place gives a decent mani/pedi. It was pretty quick though and not too luxurious. That being said, my extremities were treated nicely and felt pampered just enough. The people working here were very nice. I might have come again, but one of my toes did feel sore a couple days later, whether from a nick, a small infection, or too short a nail, i will never know.

Oh god. I was lured in by the price of $5 for bangs, and I came out wanting to cry. ($5 for them to create bangs, not a bang trim, since I dind't have bangs to begin with)

The lady who cut my hair only said two things to me throughout the quick session: "I know, I know" and "very cute! very cute!"

I asked for my hangs to by trimmed, she rushed me into the seat, and cut away, without even asking how I wanted them cut.

It was my fault for not jumping up, clutching the remaining hairs on my head, and running far, far away from her. I just kept sitting there, in the blind hope that she actually knew what she was doing as she kept reassuring me "very cute! very cute!"

Even with the rest of my hair as reference, I dont think she picked up on the fact that my hair has a lot of volume. The length that she cut my bangs to, when they were drenched by her spray bottle quickly bounced back up when dry.... to some awkward length around the midway point between by eyebrows and my hairline, when I had originally wanted eyebrow-length bangs.

The ladies at Maxi haircare on Telegraph have always been wonderful to me. Once, I wandered in there, thinking about whether I should get a haircut, and the older asian lady gave me a full consultation, based on my hair type/look I was going for. She ended up advising me against the look I wanted, saying she didn't want to do that to me, when she easily could have easily gotten some extra business from me.

*That* is customer service - when the stylist actually communicates with you about what you want.

I'm pretty easy to please/usually only come on yelp to rave about places that I really like/love, since I hate saying bad things about anything... but this place - Lan Beauty Salon - is the exception.

I LOVE this place!! It is the only place I go for a quality and affordable haircut. Kim and Lan (yes, how narcisstic of me to get my hair cut here!) have been cutting my hair for the past three years. At the advice of Kim,  I chopped off 6 inches of hair last November. Despite my extreme hesitation, she reassured me that the cut would look good because of my face shape. Needless to say, I put my full trust in her hands and walked out a very satisfied lady! These ladies are the only ones that I trust to maintain my short 'do... even if it is just cutting an inch or two off.

I'm a big big big fan of their other services.. I've been getting my hair dyed and my eyebrows waxed for the past several years. The ladies here are all very attentive and very outgoing. Even though I now live in the City, I gladly make the trek out to Berkeley every 2 or 3 months to get my hair cut at Lan's

After a 14 years with my past stylist (who unfortunately left town) I was a bit nervous to try anyone new.   But Gina came highly recommended, and when I first walked in the door I was greeted with big smiles and a positive attitude.

Gina listened carefully to exactly what I wanted.  Her years of experience show, she's very professional, and I was at ease in no time.  The haircut turned out great, and I've since recieved many compliments.   I look forward to returning to Gina.

Also, the price is so low, I felt I was robing them.

I'd decided to cut my hair SHORT for the first time in my life, and as a girl who's had long hair for as long as I can remember, I was super nervous.

I wasn't quite sure what kind of look I wanted at first, but the lady who cut my hair was very responsive and meticulous; she would ask me specifically what kind of look I wanted to go for, what length, and made suggestions as to what would look better. In the end, it turn out great! I never knew I could sport a short-haired look but she cut my hair in a very posh style, which I loved.

The haircut was about $30, but I would say is a pretty good rate since my hair is super thick and took a long time to groom.

One of my friends forgot her credit card there after she paid, but the lady came running after us on the street to give it back!

I've heard terrible rumors about bad haircuts around Berkeley, but Lan Beauty Salon didn't disappoint.

Upside: You can't beat a mani/pedi for $29. bucks!  They'll get you in and out on your lunch hour and it looks great.  One star.

Downside: The place is flithy and really makes one wonder if they don't keep their salon clean, do they even clean their tools.  Minus two stars.

And never, I repeat never, let anyone who works there come at you with a pair of scissors or hot wax.  I learned the hard way on both counts.  Minus another two stars.

I wouldn't be surprised if most of these ladies aren't licensed.

Been here twice and was satisfied both times. I'm real iffy when it comes to people cutting my hair and I found this place was pretty good. I had long hair (surfer's type) and wanted to get it trimmed. The lady, forgot her name, did a good job.

I came back a few months later (which was a few weeks ago) and now that I have shorter hair, the same lady from before, cut my hair. Again, she did a pretty good job.

It's not like all the other hair salons I've mentioned on here but it's not bad. They do a decent job and for only $15 (price raised) it's worth it. Although, I do miss my Arty's Angels but my wallet isn't complaining.

    Two thumbs up for Lan!

After searching from Yelp, I found this salon and decided to come here. ^^

This salon is busy every day. Even though no appointment is required, but since there are many customers every day, it's better to make an appointment to avoid a long waiting time xD

I got my hair cut and also colored for the first time (Yep, I've never colored my hair before :s). I'm very satisfied with the result. =)

The staffs, the one who cut my hair (Gina) and washed my hair, are very nice and friendly~
They gave me lemon cookies and hot tea while waiting for my hair coloring to get done (with my head under the heater or whatever that equipment is called lol).

The price is alright as well. =)
    Love this salon. Highly recommended.

I've been going to Gina every since August! I don't think I'll change hair stylist ever again! Unless I move far far away... To maintain my short hair, I've been going to Gina every 2 months, and she does a fantastic job every time. Now I am trying to grow out my hair, and it is at this awkward stage where its not short and its not long, its just kind of weird....so today I thought why not do something fun with this shortish hair! I went back to the salon and had Gina give me an asymmetrical bob. As always, she gave me a very cute cut and I absolutely love it!

I was a bit nervous because you never know of Berkeley salons.  However Gina is a pro.  She is also very friendly.  I walked right in and was able to get it cut with barely I wait. I have really long hair and a got long layers and side swept bangs.  It looks great.  She is very careful and makes sure she does a great job everytime.  It only cost $25.  Didn't wash my hair and cut it dry so I sadlly missed out on my favorite part--the wash. Yet got a great haircut!

Went into conniptions yesterday over how ugly my hair was. I couldn't wait even one...more...day to get it chopped. So I did some searching for a salon in my price range (under $50), open on Sundays and in the Berkeley area.

Trekked down around 4pm and there were maybe 3 or 4 other customers in there. I didn't make an appointment but didn't wait more than 5 min or so. I noticed a previous reviewer who said that her hairstylist yelled in her ear. Yeah, there was a lot of shouting/loud talking in Vietnamese. But I didn't think it was too bad.

I don't know the name of the lady who cut my hair, but she was an older woman with very short hair. She was very nice, and we spent a few minutes talking about what I wanted ("your hair too long. no style."), and then she basically dove into my hair. (Without a shampoo. I had said that I only wanted a cut.) It took all of twenty minutes, maybe? And my hair looked really cute afterwards; basically, I had said bangs, volume, and shoulder length, and she gave me exactly that.

I didn't ask for a blowdry, but she gave me one anyway.

She charged me $20. According to their brochure, women's haircuts are $18 and up. So I'm not sure what that $2 was for--the 7 inches she chopped off my head? The blowdry? But whatever--it was well worth it.

Usually when I pick a cheap place I get this horrible sinking feeling in the middle of the haircut like oh no...I shoulda forked out the big bucks! But this place was a good find!

Cleanliness-wise, it is true that the back of the salon where hair is washed is kinda messy. But it didn't squick me out.

Lan is a great place to drop in for a manicure. They have enough chairs that they are able to accommodate walk-ins with minimal wait. While I was there, I saw several people get very acceptable haircuts, too. The staff are very friendly and they are careful about sanitation. The only problem is they don't have very good drying equipment. After doing a great job on my nails, my manicurist ruined my polish by leaving it too long under a hot dryer and although I though I'd waited a long time for my toenails to dry, they smudged when I put my shoes on. They offer a great mani-pedi especially for the very reasonable price but you'll have to allow a lot of extra time for air-drying..

It is better to have your hair cut by someone who knows what they are doing than it is to give your mom a pair of clippers and a salad bowl.

$12 hair cuts and a seven dollar tips makes an extremely motivated cosmetologist do their best all over ones scalp.

I think it is a great thing when service quality stays high and prices don't inflate.

I've had good luck with Lan and Kim. I'd recommend both.

Alot of reviews recommend Gina, but while I don't think her cuts were bad, I think she paid less attention to my instructions than the other two and gave me her generic asian male cut.

Even though it's not a shampoo, you get a free rinse after the cut, which is really great.

We went for pedicures; as mentioned by someone else, there was a definite underlying stench of humidity + garbage... What hair salon smells like that?  The pedicures themselves were OK-- not bad, but nothing spectacular, either, and definitely no-frills.

Gina cut my hair and did a pretty good job.  She was quick and efficient and listened to the few directions I had.  For $15, not too bad.

This place is great. Gina is the best. Absolutely. A no-brainer. I'll be going here for every haircut I'll need.

This review is for an eyelash perm only. I went in on 10/30/10 and came out with the exact same lashes and paid $35 for it. I tried to tell the lady that they looked EXACTLY the same but she wouldn't listen. I would like my money back please!

Outstanding experience great service unbeatable prices! I get my highlights done by Kim who is absolutely an  expert, I am blonde and it's really easy to have bad highlights done. The first time she was a little cautious because she didn't know my hair, but now it's the 3rd time and I am super happy. Btw I live in the city and it's totally worth the trip! She is really good with cuts too!

I have been a customer for about 5 years, I get my nails and waxing done there. I never have to make an appointment,  which is great because I am always on the go. Prices are very competitive and the staff is very friendly and attentive.

I've had two excellent manicures here and I'll be back. It's nothing fancy, no rose petals in the soak, and only a brief massage, but for an $11 manicure it's perfect: a great selection of Opi colors, no appointment, no wait, meticulously-applied polish and friendly service -- on my walk home from work and open till 7 on week days. I couldn't be happier. Also they have a candy jar at the register with GOOD candy.

Note: This review is for Gina only. I can't speak for the others there, although they're always very nice.

I now get my hair cut exclusively by Gina. She's the best, is a pro, works quickly but efficiently, and is a lovely person to boot. Here's what I get for $15:

    - A fantastic haircut, plus the fact that after a few trips I don't even need to explain it to her anymore.
    - Great conversation. We talk about life, love, cooking, her life in Vietnam, everything.
    - A rinse and a short head rub.
    - A quick gel & style of my hair.

So, yeah. $15. I usually tip nicely.

Make an appointment with Gina. You won't regret it.

It's probably a better idea to review each stylist at this place. They all provide great service but the result varies for each stylist.  Kim is one of my favorites too. For only $12 a haircut, it's hard not to stop by every 2-3 weeks for a clean trim.  Experiences might differ for females with longer, more stylish hair.

I came here through a friend's recommendation to get a hair cut but I got more than a cool cut, I also got nice service in a  friendly environment.  The person who cut my hair was Lan and she was very talkative but fun.  The price is $15 which is a great deal!  This is the second time i had my hair there.  Now, I recommend this place to anyone who ask me where I got this nice hairdo ;).  They can be busy after work hours, so it's best to call ahead and make appointment.  So if you are looking for a nice place to get a hair cut, come to Lan!   See  ya!

As I sit on my bed, eating my chocolate ice cream, I think back to two hours ago when I was sitting in one of the few black waiting chairs at Lan Beauty Salon.

I drove up to the salon and found parking across the street in a "pay to park" spot. ($.25 for 10 minutes). I went into the salon, which looked mediocre from the outside but pretty stylish inside. To tell the truth, I was extremely nervous. I've had my share of botched hair cuts - all which make me cringe to think about. Anyways, my heart was pounding and I could feel my face getting hot; I was tempted to run out of the shop and never look back...BUT I knew I couldn't because my hair was in dire need of a date with some silver scissors. I waited for a good 30 minutes (there were 2 guys getting haircuts and 2 women ahead of me in line) before I was called up. My knees wobbled as I walked to the hair-cutting chair and stepped over the balls of hair on the floor left from the previous client. I took a deep breath and so it began.

I told LAN (the woman doing my hair) a general idea of what I wanted. She was so friendly and nice and we had a good conversation. I was still slightly nervous, even though I should have been put at ease by Lan's demeanor. 20 minutes later, I stood up and shook my head around and fondled my hair - it was perfect: it had flow and it didn't look like a curtain of black hair, but a cascade of black water (excuse my tackiness). Lan did everything I asked and even cut it to the exact length I asked for.

My total came out to be $20 + $5 tip and it was well worth it. I will be visiting Lan Beauty Salon again.

**for the record, I have really long, straight hair. It was about 13 inches past my shoulders and about 11.5 inches after my cut.

ALSO, they do everything from cuts to color, perms, eyelash tinting/perm, waxing, facials and nail care.
