Review from Karen R.
I went here recently with my vegan boyfriend. We started our experience by sampling a bowl of their lentil soup each and then followed by sharing the Vegetarian Platter which for $13.50 consisted of "a combination of Fasolia, Tikil Gomen, Misir Wot, Kosta and Shiro"
What a fabulous meal! Of course the restaurant had more of a friendly neighbour hood feel than some strange restaurant so that was nice/different.
Would definately go again!Listed in: Haunt-a-licious (Burnaby)

* Oy - sometimes the things you hear! *
I have a bad habit when dining alone - listening to conversations at the other tables. I know, I know, terrible of me. But it provides entertainment sometimes.
Today it was a really odd conversation between the elderly couple at the next table. They were talking rather loudly to each other so it would be hard to avoid hearing the conversation.
The woman asked the man, "So what type of Christians are Ethiopians?" The man responded with what I would categorize as just rude, "There aren't many, and those that claim to be Christian there aren't real Christians." He went on to say, "They're mostly Jew like."
WTF?!?!?!?! As I recall Christianity is the largest religion in Ethiopia. And what the heck is "Jew like"?!?!?!?!
When their food came out he rather loudly said, "There is no way you can eat this food with this bread. I need utensils." The woman said, "No, the menu says you should use the bread." He responded, "I don't care. That is stupid." He was a real charmer. Oy.
Anyway....On to the food......
I had the non-vegetarian platter which included doro wat (chicken stew), ye-siga wat (beef stew), minchet abish alicha (mild ground beef stew), and yedinich wat bessega (potato and beef stew).
The doro wat was the highlight of the meal. The drumstick was perfectly tender and covered in a pleasant berbere sauce with just the right balancing of garlic, ginger, onions, and herbs. Very flavourful. Oddly it didn't have any hard boiled eggs. But perhaps they just forgot to include one? But very tasty overall.
The yedinich wat bessega was also good. The potatoes were cooked to the right consistency and the beef was very tender. The spicing on the sauce was spot on.
The ye-siga wat had a nice sauce, but the beef was way too tough to be called a good dish.
The minchet abish alicha was pleasantly flavoured and provided a nice taste contrast to the other 3 dishes.
The injera was well made, of the right consistency and sourness. The lining injera was a bit too cold though - as if it had been in the fridge. Had the same issue at Axum (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) when I went there. But just as at Axum the extra injera was nice and warm. I'd be perfectly fine with room temp injera as the lining (and in fact it probably is more traditional that way). But when it is cold - as in chilled - it really isn't my favourite.
Service was friendly and efficient - more than I can say for that man at the next table!
I'm still going to be exploring the other Ethiopian places in town to find one that truly sings to me though!Listed in: Vancouver African Food

I gave this 3 stars because Ethiopian is not my favorite cuisine. However, if my friends are craving Ethiopian and I have to be dragged into an Ethiopian restaurant, out of all the Ethiopian restaurants in the city I would pick this one. It's a nice and tidy restaurant with reasonable prices and the food quality is good. I've been to a few Ethiopian restaurants and by far this one has earned my preference. Also, taxes are included in their prices so what you see is what you get. In fact, I'm changing mu mind and giving this 4 stars because of the extra value factor this causes. If you're a meat eater, for $14.50 you can't really beat trying 4 different meats in their non-vegetarian platter.

I ordered the veggie platter, which came with of Ethiopian bread. The bread has the consistency of a crepe (but about 3 times as large) and taste a bit like sour dough. The veggie platter was definitely not something my palate was used to, but it was very interesting nonetheless. It consisted of a different assortment of cabbage, spinach, lentils, a curry-like paste, and beans/carrots cooked in a thick sauce. There are no utensils so you used the bread swipe up the food.
The flavor was a little bland, probably because the meal was so healthy. Our waiter told us that everything was made with "natural" ingredients. I have no idea what he means by that. Organic maybe? I didn't press further since his English was quite broken. I wouldn't recommend the veggie platter if you like your food with a lot of flavour.
I suspect that were having authentic Ethiopian food because all the patrons were African and were not speaking English, which I liked. It's a small family owned restaurant so the atmosphere is very friendly, but the service is slow. But, for an authentic Ethiopian experience, it was worthwhile to visit this place. Next time, I will try a meat dish. -

one of the best Ethiopian restaurants in Vancouver. Tucked away in a little known corner, we often drive past 6 other Ethiopian places to make it to Lalibela. Great Injera and fantastic Wats and Tibs. Lalibela is fantastic!
