We have been clients with Dr. Waterhouse since he first opened Lake Union Veterinary Clinic and he's been with us with an elderly dog with unusual problems. Dr. Waterhouse spent so much time with Jake and did so much research on how to make our boy comfortable and happy I can't express the gratitude my family has towards him. Dr. Waterhouse found us experts and was a sounding board to us when our other dog, a puppy was hit by a car and left for dead. Eventually we were able to take Sam home and with Dr. Waterhouse's help he recovered fully. During all of these issues we spent many hours in the office and on the phone. Dr. Waterhouse and we can tell you that his staff care, are detailed , thorough and always follow up. My family love Dr. Waterhouse and we can't say enough wonderful things about him.

I love this place. Dr. Waterhouse is great. The staff is great and very helpful. I had a dog emergency last weekend and they squeezed me in at the last moment. They were not at all unhappy about the fact that I made them stay late and gave great service. Thank you and I am happy to have Lake Union Vet Clinic as my vet.

My bf and I had just gotten our 7 month old pitbull mix, Annabelle moo, and after comparing all the vets in our area (capitol hill/downtown), Lake Union turned out to be the highest rated with the best experiences.... and this place delivered!
I felt so welcomed upon entering and they were so very good with the puppy, it made me feel comfortable. After a short wait, we got led into an individual room where we were promptly greeted by a vet tech who prep'd the pup for the Dr. Once he arrived, it was like a meet and greet. Every question we had, he had a very thorough answer to give. When asked about what sort of food would be best for a pitbull mix, he not only gave us the lowdown on what should and shouldnt be in dog food but also what the majority of his clients feed their dogs and what he personally feeds his own!
There was no "selling" BS I have previously experienced at vets. It was a very down-to-earth, friendly vibe that made me feel like i was talking to a friend who happens to know all there is to know about animals. We didnt feel as if they were trying to rush us out to get the next clients in. They took their time and made sure all our questions were answers and worries were quelmed. I highly recommend this vet for beginner pet owners. Dr. Waterhouse is a fantastic vet with a terrific staff beside him and we will miss this place so much. There will never be another Lake Union Vet, that is for sure.
If you are looking for a vet or considering to switch to a new one, look no further. You have found it! -

Today we got to see Dr. Waterhouse, he was super awesome with my dog, very gentle and really knew what he was talking about. He had a very soft tone with her and I appreciated his explanations of her ailment. The front office gal as usual was super friendly. This is my go to place!

They were GREAT with our 6 week old kitten. It was my first visit to LUVC and im 100% pleased. I found them here on yelp. Dr. Cary is great and Chantel in the office is super nice!
My kittens upper resp. infection is gone and he is more hyper than I ever knew he could be! Love it! LUVC is highly recommended by me! -

awesome awesome awesome. They were able to get KBJ in as a new patient on the same day, even though they were booked...we didn't have to wait too long and the staff were friendly, professional, and most importantly, these people know what they are talking about...everyone was really supportive, knew my cat as soon as I called to see how she was doing, and remembered us two days after we called. They gave me a price range that was really reasonable, and didn't try to sell me anything. I've got quite a difficult, cranky kitty --these guys were great--they took things in stride and didn't make me feel bad for her cruddy kitty attitude. I LOVE THEM!!!

It was an interesting first meeting with Dr. Waterhouse. It was already about 5pm and I looked on yelp to find a vet nearby. He had a 5 star rating but only 14 reviews which all looked really great. So, I called, no one answered but I decided to drove over anyway. By this time, it was 5:30 and I get to the clinic, the doors are locked! A little panic set in but then a gentleman came to open the door. I asked "is the vet here?" He said "What do you need?" and I said "my dog threw up 10 times in about 30 mins.." and he said "come on in". I walked down the stairs into the lobby, the gentleman goes around the counter, gets a clipboard, walks in the back, puts on a coat and I read "Dr. Cary Waterhouse." Well then, he was the vet!!!! They were already closed since 5pm, but he let my dog and I in and treated him anyway. I thought this was really great!
Dr. Waterhouse is really thorough, takes his time, doesn't rush you in or out of the exam room, explains why he's doing what he's doing, and he talks to you like a normal person. Some vets will talk so fast to be done with you, prescribe you a million things, walk out of the room without giving a hoot about why you were in there the first place.
If you're reading this, you love your pet and would do anything to keep them/get them healthy. My Charlie was in bad shape, his diagnosis was never clear, but we think it was an ear infection that got into his neural system. He was walking sideways, his head was turned sideways, BUT he never lost his appetite and still wanted to play! This normal behavior despite being very ill threw us all off! You may think...Ear infection gone awry?! Bad Owner!. Really, I am not that neglectful pet owner, Charlie is very well taken care of, ask his dad.
Long story short, Dr. Waterhouse got Charlie back to 100%. He didn't just throw tons of medicines at us, he carefully planned out the dosage, length of time Charlie needed to be on each med (antibiotics & steroids). His staff would call and check on Charlie's progress every 2 days until he was better, and sometimes every day! The awesome thing is that Dr. Waterhouse consulted with other vets who specialized in neurological problems and even fellow vets in the area. This showed me that he's not only vested in your pet's car, but he's also well liked among his peers. I really appreciated the "team" effort that went into finding out what was wrong with Charlie and the best treatment plan for him at the time. Dr. Waterhouse will tell you up front if a treatment doesn't work, what the next course of treatment would be, so no surprises.
In conclusion, Charlie is back to being the bouncy little white fur ball that he is, jumping and running and enjoying life. I can't put a price on what it means to have Charlie well and in my life. However, Dr. Waterhouse isn't way uber expensive and if you have to come back multiple times as Charlie needed to, he didn't keep charging us the office visit fee = awesome.
Great service, great staff, very awesome vet. You won't be disappointed! -

Awesome Vet! Dr. Waterhouse is very gentle, patient and wonderful with your dog. He spends a lot of time with you and makes sure you understand everything you need to before you leave his office. He is a vet you can trust and know he's not just out to make a quick buck. You will love him!

I established care with Cary Waterhouse based on a recommendation by a friend who was very impressed by his care of her pooch. My senior yellow lab at 12.5 years had a better quality of life for his final years because of Cary. I consider Cary a "vet's vet" with his wealth of knowledge, skill with analysis, and desire to teach. My new puppy was introduced to Cary today and I again feel like my sweet pooch is in excellent hands as am I. Karen W, Capitol Hill, Seattle

By far, the best vet ever!! Thank you Dr. Waterhouse and LUVC.
My dog and I have visited many many vets in the area from Crown Hill to Queen Anne...the search is over. LUVC is by far the best I've ever experienced. Dr. Waterhouse is very thorough in asking questions and making sure my dog is happy and healthy. As one of the other reviewers mentioned they do not "upsell" their services like many other vet offices do to get you to spend more $$...this vet does not which is AWESOME! It gives me a lot of confidence in bring my dog here and it also builds a tremendous trust. I know that this is important for any pet owner.
So thank you LUVC! You are amazing. 5 years and counting...
I highly recommend :) -

I've checked out several vets in the area, and Dr. Waterhouse is hands-down the best. I won't get into the bad experiences I've had, but Dr. Waterhouse gives a service that I haven't experienced elsewhere in the Seattle area: he checks out my dog thoroughly and HE recommends what we need to do. I was sick of having vets just try to get me to pay for as many services as I was willing to, regardless of whether or not they were needed. Thank goodness those days are over.

Dr. Cary originally came as a recommendation by some close friends. I started taking Butters (aka, Crack Kitty) to LUVC last summer. My first interaction over the phone with the receptionist was very pleasant and already made me feel very comfortable about this place.
Butters' first visit was nerve-wracking (for myself and the cat), but since then, she seems to like visiting the office. The staff is super friendly, and Dr. Cary is a consummate professional.
I'm writing this review today because I am grateful that Dr. Cary was able to squeeze in a very sick dog I'm dog-sitting for the next few days. Even though he was already booked, he made time to see Kirby, treated her with gentleness, and made sure we don't have a repeat of last night's episode! It was not pretty.
Thank you, Dr. Cary & the staff at LUVC for being so awesome. -

Super friendly staff. I saw worms (eww!) coming out of my cat late on a Saturday afternoon. The clinic was officially closed but I called and they were happy to see me and recommend the medication to take care of it. Went here for two years and was very happy with the experience and professionalism.

I found my new vet!
I called Lake Union Vet yesterday morning and they were able to get me in the same day as a new patient and after my work hours. That's worth five stars right there in my book, but it gets better.
When I arrived, my cat and I were put into an exam room almost immediately. My cat was terrified and shaking, but the assistant did her best to calm him down and make him comfortable. After she took his weight and temperature, Dr. Waterhouse came in.
Dr. Waterhouse listened to all of my concerns, and I never felt rushed. He told me all the possibilities clearly and told me exactly the steps necessary to get my kitten better without costing an arm and a leg. In fact, I got a discount for my first visit and a rebate for the prescription food that I had to buy without even asking! I was also taught how to give my cat his antibiotics.
Previous vets I have been to have talked baby talk to my pets, don't talk to me - only the animal, or rush me out the door and Dr. Waterhouse didn't. All of my questions and concerns were answered thoroughly and genuinely. I highly recommend Lake Union Vet!Listed in: Yes! Yes! Yes!

I like this clinic. We have a lab mix and took our dog here for a check-up and vaccinations. It was super clean and the vet seems like a guy who likes animals and became a vet for that reason (which is the right reason). He mentioned some tartar on my dogs' teeth but said it wasn't too bad and didn't suggest cleaning them. I could tell that if I has asked him more he would have given me options but that he didn't feel like they were bad enough for him to even bring it up.
They recommended one set of pills to prevents worms/fleas (which I agreed to) but it wasn't high pressure. The rest of the people that worked there seemed to really like animals too and tried hard to make my dog comfortable, giving her treats and talking nicely to her. The prices seemed fair and it is in South Lake Union which means it is our new clinic. -

I just got an Alaskan Malamute and found this clinic on here. The staff is extremely outgoing and professional. I had to come down and get my puppy his shots and stuff and he was not in the best of moods about that but the doctor was great! I expressed concern about him moving back to Hawaii with us and he took the time to help clear up those hurdles and let us know what we can do and what he can do to get our puppy ready for the trip back home in a few months. Will definitely come back in a few weeks for our puppies next round of shots! Dr. Cary is an amazing Veterinarian, If only human doctors shared the same work ethic as he did.

We've only been a few times for minor procedures (new patient exam and followups), but feel very comfortable with the care that our 10 year-old Pomeranian receives from Dr. Waterhouse. Very thorough physical exam (he seemed to feel around over the dog's whole body, which we had never seen before) and analysis of new x-rays and previously recorded blood work (from Urban Vet).
We left Urban Vet after our pooch was bruised badly during a blood draw procedure. Of course I know that bruising can occur with blood draws, but we felt this was excessive and were not fans of Urban Vet's "well, this sort of bruising is totally normal and he was aggressive" response. He has NEVER bruised before during ANY procedure.
Anyway, we're happy to have found Dr. Waterhouse at Lake Union Vet, and look forward to more high quality care! -

I took our Papillon back for a teeth cleaning after calling every other vet office in a 5-mile radius. LUVC charged much less than the other offices, even including two extractions!
ALSO - they called me the next day to see how our dog was doing. That's pretty awesome and I appreciate it.1 Previous Review: Show all »

If you have an animal that loves the vet they might be fine. I have a 4 year old dog who had surgery a year ago and since then has some PTSD at the Vet. I found both Dr. Waterhouse and the vet techs to be un-friendly and not patient with an animal, who with a little compassion and a gentle approach migh have been better. I was very disappointed with their care and lack of compassion and will be finding a new clinic.

Spent a lot of time WAITING. Waiting after we checked in for our afternoon appt. Waiting for the vet. waiting for the vet again. And then waiting for the vet again before someone at the reception desk finally checked us out. Everyone was really nice. The doc seemed very knowledgable. But another downfall was over the phone I was told what my price would be for everything. I added another 20 dollar shot when we were there but somehow the price for everything was DOUBLE what I was quoted over the phone. The waiting. The wrong price quote. not to mention I was supposed to receive a follow up phone call the next day...that i never got. ?? Whats going on here?

I had been very hopeful about finding a new vet in a great close to work and home location but unfortunately I was very disappointed in Dr. Waterhouse's interactions with my dog.
Scheduling was easy, the office is very nice, the vet tech was friendly and just lovely with my dog.
I was disappointed in the rough way that Dr. Waterhouse interacted with my dog and his inability to observe her body language to see that she did not like how he was tapping at her head and playing with her. She was cowering by the end of the exam under my legs and not interested in interacting with him at all. I have never seen my dog react to anyone like this, ever. Not all dogs like to be played with roughly and I would suggest that when meeting a new animal any person should proceed with caution and let the animal lead.
He did listen to my concerns, and then proceeded to take an ear swab w/o letting me know what he was doing and then charging me $45 for an ear specimen that I could have told him was unnecessary. I was not there with concerns about her ears. She has some allergy issues with her ears and I know when she has an infection and treat it accordingly. He didn't ask if I wanted the test done, didn't indicate how much it cost, he just did it. Upon re-reviewing my invoice his costs seem to be in line with the community, and he does offer first time exam discounts.
The next week they called which was very nice, but when it comes to detail they fell short again, they left a message asking how "he" was doing. My dog is a female with a neutral name and attention to those small matters I think are very important - others might not think so.
I truly wanted to believe this was our new vet, but my instinct tells me the interaction wasn't right.
In my new search for a vet unfortunately I've not found one person who "loves" their vet, save the few new posts here on Dr. Waterhouse.
Follow up after this posting from Dr. Waterhouse has only solidified my decision. I had provided some inaccurate inf. r/t cost and that has been changed, but unfortunately he didn't care to speak to the most essential element of the visit, his interaction with my dog which is the most important element. Perhaps you too will have the opportunity to have him wish you an insincere "great life". Proceed with caution.Comment from Cary W. of Lake Union Veterinary Clinic 3/5/2010

Took my pug here for the first time today. Fast and friendly service. No BS and reasonable prices. Dr. Waterhouse is a pretty damn cool no-nonsense kind of vet. His staff is very friendly and as expected really good with my dog. I really liked and am really happy with our overall experience.

Dr. Waterhouse and his staff are really great. We took our cat in because she suddenly got really sick. After they drew labs we found out she had kidney failure. We were explained all of the treatment options and potential costs. It was very reasonable considering how serious her condition was. At times we had to take her in on short notice because her condition was getting worse. They were always accommodating and made each visit very smooth. Unfortunately our cat's kidney function never fully recovered and was starting to suffer. Dr. Waterhouse was very compassionate and professional when we had to put her down. A week later we received a card in the mail signed by all of the staff expressing their sympathy. It was very nice. Highly recommend this clinic.

Dr. Waterhouse has been taking care of my dear Brewster for almost two years now. This is his brand new office and we are thrilled to have him closer to our house. He is a great vet and his prices are very reasonable. The office itself is clean and contemporary rather than the country kitchen motif that you find at other vet offices.

I had my first appointment with LUVC last week. I needed to get my cat any necessary vaccinations so that she could begin her new 'life saving' career as a feline blood donor at another animal hospital. I had originally been advised to get her three different shots by another vet, though Dr. Waterhouse questioned one of them. He had said that this vaccination was found to be potentially injurious in some cases, and overall ineffective in it's focus. I was impressed by his up-to-date knowledge of medicine and research, as well as his concern for my pet! I also have two dogs (one young and healthy and the other old and w/cancer). I have switched their care over to LUVC as well.

I have two cats and two dogs. We have followed Dr. Waterhouse from West Seattle over to Lake Union. I was hesitant about the drive but the 15 minutes is so well worth it. We appreciate Dr. Waterhouse's professionalism and demeanor with us. He is great with our pets and all four of them do well with both the staff and Dr. We are grateful for the follow up calls as well. I suggest LUVC to everyone that I can because my family truly believes in Dr. Waterhouse and his team.

Dr. Waterhouse and the staff at LUVC are fantastic! We live in the neighborhood and were curious about LUVC when they opened but were really happy with our current vet (Four Paws) so we didn't seek them out initially. Eventually however, our dog Margot was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma and LUVC's proximity to our house became an indispensable asset. We could no longer get Margot in and out of the car and so our vet placed a call to Dr. Waterhouse asking if he would be willing to take on the blood test monitoring for Margot and he agreed without hesitation. He even waived the office fees and just charged us for the blood tests themselves. He and his staff were very gracious and made us feel very welcome during a really hard time in our lives. They also provided excellent advice and doggy daycare when we had to leave Margot to go to work (this was not complimentary but it was on par with the costs everywhere else and knowing that if something went wrong she was already at the vet we would have paid a lot more!) Eventually- when the time came to put Margot to sleep Dr. Waterhouse and his staff were available and helped us make the difficult decision. We ended up staying with her long after closing time and they NEVER entered the room or hurried us along as we said goodbye to our beautiful girl. We really appreciated their care and compassion. I can't say enough how much we appreciated LUVC during Margot's last days.
We now have a new family member Bodhi and we are happy to say that Dr. Waterhouse is his vet too. -

Dr. Cary has been taking excellent care of our Chow Chow mix (Maia) since his opening. Maia can be a special needs girl, and Cary and his staff are always aware of and attentive to those needs. Taking Maia to the vet has become a non-event for her--and that's really saying something, as previously her stress level went through the roof. I give LUVC my highest recommendation, and have in fact referred several friends and colleagues and each (without exception) has been extremely happy with the experience.

This is my first Yelp review ever, but I feel the need to say how great Dr. Waterhouse is. I have the most insecure, nervous dog on earth. She literally knocks over chairs trying to hide under them, shakes, pants, is terrified. I was beyond impressed with how Dr. Waterhouse interacted with her. And here is the kicker: I am a vet myself. I do not practice on small animals, so needed to find somewhere to take my dog for her routine care, and I had heard good things about Dr. Waterhouse. I was all ready to have to restrain her, muzzle her, go through a wrestling match, etc. to get her vaccines done, but Dr. Waterhouse was INCREDIBLY skilled and my dog did not even notice the needle stick. I couldn't believe it. I've worked with probably a hundred vets and I've never seen anyone with such excellent "bedside manner". He is also a reasonable person in terms of his recommendations and overall approach. He does not suggest or push unecessary or impractical stuff as far as I can tell (which can be a real problem with other vets). And he was patient and listened to me. The prices are reasonable, and I have no problem paying appropriate fees to have a doctor examine my pet. I think I have pretty high standards being a vet myself, and I would not hesitate to trust him with my dog's care.

At the recommendation of a friend we took our golden retriever with lymphoma (diagnosed at a different vet) to LUVC and met with Dr. Waterhouse. Even with something potentially this complex, we were able to get an appt right away and Dr. Waterhouse spent about 45 minutes with us even before the tests. He discussed several options and did some lab tests and a x-ray that day to find out exactly how far along the cancer is. He ended up consulting with an oncologist (saving us $ and extra time trying to get an appt with a busy doc) and we decided on a middle-level treatment that we didn't think would make our dog sick. They followed up to see how he was doing and even sent a nice "welcome" card. I thought Dr. Waterhouse's manner (and that of his staff) was friendly, but down-to-earth, realistic about costs of the services and very matter of fact - something we really needed during a visit about an upsetting subject. I wish I had more pets to take to him so they all could be treated as well.
