Drove through this area on my last day in Vegas. What a beautiful change from the craziness on the Strip! During our drive, I can't tell you how many times I was awestruck by the scenery. Being from Wisconsin, I had a preconceived idea of what a desert would be like, but there was much more plant life than I was expecting. The dry river beds and different colored layers of the mountains made you wonder what life was like here in prehistoric times. I am so glad I discovered this natural wonderland just a few miles from my favorite vacation city. I can't wait to come back!

What a break from Vegas!
I can only take so many blinking lights and tittie cards flying around the strip. Every once in a while on a trip to Vegas I need to see some nature. So I go to Lake Mead.
They have beaches and awesome hiking trails. My favorite trail was the one where you get up to a get a great view of the Black Canyon. Don't ask me how I got there, I happen to know one of the park rangers and let him drive.
Thanks to Groupon, a friend was able to snag one for a pontoon boat rental. While these things only go a whopping 5 kts, we were still able to make it to the damn and putt around taking awesome pictures around the lake. By the dock you'll see and unreal amount of carp and cool looking loons (the waterfowl kind, not the ones on the strip).Listed in: Viva Las Vegas!, Look Groupon Found Me!

Went to Lake Mead NRA after see The Hoover Dam. It cost $5 to drive in & look around. We didn't have a lot of time there, but would still recommend it if in the area.
We went to the boat launch area and walked a little bit. Lots of ducks, fish, geese there. Crazy carp were eating popcorn that people bought from the boat shop - craziness.
There's lots of hiking to do there. We just didn't have enough time. Would have liked to hike the White Rock Canyon & Arizona Hot Springs.
We'll go back to one day do the Lake Mead Cruise on the Desert Princess. It's closed in Dec for renovations. Sightseeing cruises Feb thru Nov.

This is the one and only place that I have gone motorboating in my life. And no, not the dirty kind.
Lake Mead is so much fun! It's very scenic and really cool to know that you're in the middle of the dessert. Definitely a great getaway spot from the heart of sin city. Rent and ride a motorboat! It's a guaranteed good time. -

a great place for a scenic ride. only 5 dollars at the entrance and you're free to roam for quite a long time. the curving roads alongside the lake and the cliffs are beautiful but be careful the air is dirty when you drive on some parts under construction. I drove down onto some unpaved road and was able to stay close to the lake at the north side I believe (not the south side where there's guided access to it and you can see wolves hanging around your car. they were cute, really cute, and they were afraid of people. I stepped out my car to take some pictures and they ran back)
then my car got stuck in the sand... I knew it was a bad idea to drive that far but I kinda just wanted to try it. That's just me. next thing I found out is my phone still had no signal so I walked to a couple camping there and borrowed there phone. ahh they told me they'd been there for 3 months (I could tell when I saw the spider net was expanding from the tire of their RV to the brick they put down it.) And they were going to stay there till winter (they should've relocated as I'm writing this)
waited 90 minutes in that 33 Celsis degree day and a cute AAA guy showed up. (not your typical Mexican uncle in California) He helped pull my car out and didn't want to take any tip saying that "we don't work for the tips." and advised me to wash the front tires immediately. OK nice guy, so I drove up to the small town the old man told me and the only thing I recoginzed there was Mcdonald's, and their drive thru was only open because the inside was being remodeled. It's a really small town where people would actually come and talk to you.
crazy shit I know..
