After a good meal at Origin and a stroll through the occupiers around the St. James Cathedral, what could top off the night better than, well getting... okay I can't make the bad joke.  At the risk of offending, let's leave it at what could top off the night better than getting another drink?

I knew nothing about Laide as I crossed its threshold.  Passing by the nude statues, I have to admit I was intrigued... was this some strange Eyes Wide Shut experience in the making?  Unfortunately, the lounge was practically empty, maybe because it was a Tuesday night.

The service was good.  The price for a glass of chianti was $10 which I found fair.  We only stayed for one drink, but I am pretty certain that I'd like to come back here on a busier night to see what vibe this place has.

What is not to love about Laide, I ask you? Nothing, that's what. Skim past the provocative, life-sized human busts as you enter the subtly marked doorway and plunk down in one of their cozy rounded booths (I plan to do this next time for sure!) and take in your sexy surroundings...

For the fabulous Michelle V's birthday, nothing less than the best would do and Laide pulled out all of the stops for our sizeable group of rowdy imbibers. We were steadily fed mini sandwiches and pizzas throughout the night and nary a moment transpired where there wasn't some sort of food item in front of my face, waiting to be sampled.

I spent the night nursing several (exactly when does "several" cross over to "many", anyway?) sexy glasses of Pinot Grigio while contemplating the extensive martini list. I took a sip of my friend's "Pink Glove" (Sour Puss raspberry liqueur, orange vodka, lime juice) and immediately did an "I'll-have-one-of-those" motion. Seriously scrumptious, but so dangerously good you have to watch out that you don't blow through your bank account buying them all night.

Consistently amazing music throughout the night - it was as if my own iPod had been lifted, plugged in and set to shuffle for the night. Belle & Sebastian, Joy Division, Massive Attack, Deerhunter, etc.

Really cozy and loungey spot that I'd highly recommend for a birthday or other such celebration!

Finally.  A cocktail bar downtown with a name that makes you giggle.  Laide takes its name from two things; the street it's on (Ade-Laide...get it?) and the fact that it's all about sex.  Not a strip club or a porn shop per se, it's definitely not for the prudes in your pack.

As soon as you walk in, you're in full view of fully anatomically-correct plaster casts of naked people parts that we're told are taken from the staff.  Guess I'll not be applying for a job if there's a "minimum size" requirement.  The room is dark with small couch nooks that you can curl up in and enjoy a premium cocktail.  The bar is situated to the rear of the place, jutting out into the middle of the room (that shape remind you of anything?), where the countertop is covered with a mosaic of cut-outs from skin magazines that are so old it made me want to shave.

On the one wall porno movies are screened, but hold your horses there.  These are old porn movies that would have been made at a time that ankle flashes would arouse the masses.  Seeing them now juxtaposed with the erotic setting makes the film more comedy then sexy.  On the opposite side of the room is a stripper pole where you're able to take your best shot at slinking your way down the brass.  Do be careful.  The martinis they make are at full strength, so the tendency to take a face plant at the base of the pole is pretty strong.

Now this is my kind of lounge: An establishment that isn't built in and around a giant subwoofer with grotesque bass that beats the sh*t out of you and your conversations. A place with plenty of comfy seating lining the perimeter of the room. Delicious and naughty-sounding cocktails. Fantastic tapas to go with said cocktails. An atmosphere that's intimate and fun (olde-timey porn is projected on the wall, plastered naked bodies line the walls of the corridor as you walk in, and low but not too dark lighting). And then there's a stripper pole that's... sanitized.

If you're ever hosting a party, I highly recommend this place. If the above points didn't convince you, I didn't get to the best part: the staff! Racquel was so helpful and awesome while planning this party and the servers, Tracey and Tiz, were fan-fricking-tastic! The three of them will ensure you and your guests have a great time and get properly smashed at the same time.

So what are you waiting for? Get Laide already!

I read all of the wonderful reviews about this place and I was looking forward to a night of debauchery with my ladies to celebrate my birthday.

Too bad it didn't end up that way.

The place must be under new management because I wasn't greeted by a Tiz or Rachel. I was greeted by a wonderful woman, Rosealynn, who was quite gracious and welcoming but gave me the impression that Laide is going to be seeing some changes.

The menus was more salads and sandwiches and similar light faire and I was informed that it's not open  saturdays anymore ( although she was willing to open up for my event)

I'm not going to lie, I'm disappointed but I'm glad I checked it out ahead of time, otherwise I would have taken a large group of people to a venue that wasn't even operating that night!

I've been to Laide a few times now. It's a nice quiet lounge. Everyone there seems to be a regular. It's off on Adelaide East, so it's not really around any others bars and clubs. You don't get too many random bar hopping in. Everyone there wants to be there.

The place has a retro-sex theme. There are naked anatomically correct busts as you walk in, they usually project 1950s  porno on the walls, the bar is inlayed with vintage porno pictures, and there are a few other touches like this to help the name make some sense. There is lots of nice bench seats along the walls, with curtains separating chunks of the bench. For the most part the place is candle lit. It's dark as hell at night.

The food is phenomenal. They have a very small Tapas menu, but I shit you not it's some of the best food in the city. I think the chef used to be the guy from Bloom. (Or he created the menu, or something like that.) I've ordered most if not all the food on the menu, and I haven't been disappointed yet.

Drinks are pretty expensive. So is the food. What do you want? It's a nice enough place.

Now who doesn't love getting Laide?

Laide is one of the few Toronto establishments that I truly miss and wish we had here in New York. And it's rare that New York doesn't have something.

Even though Laide was the old 50s porno flicks projected onto a wall, it's really a Laide-back place. Lots of comfortable bench seatings with cushions. It's easy (when it's not crowded) to find a quiet private corner to be alone with your date.

The drinks here are STRONG. You definitely get your money's worth.

So why are you reading this review, Toronto? Get yourself Laide right now!

I was extremely fortunate to attend a Yelp Elite event at Laide, but sadly was disappointed with the experience.

Specifically, it was all due to one reason: The weird old-timey porn being shown on the wall the entire time.

Sure, the place is called "Laide", so I assume it's going to be a sexy place, but I'm of the mind that when it comes to "sexy", a little goes a long way. There's plenty of exquisite erotic art on the walls, the bartop features cheeky little picturettes beneath it's translucent hard-top surface and there's great lighting and furniture to make one feel "sexy" all the way. If not for that gross porn...

All that being said, the service from Traci, Tiz and Racquel was excellent and they serve up some excellent cocktails and shots. They're a great crew, but you can't help but be distracted by the awful old-timey skin flick on the East wall of the bar.

Seriously Laide, you're cool and sexy. The only thing stopping this from being a great spot is the weird, ugly, old-timey porn.
