Great atmosphere. Overwhelming beer selection. Friendly staff, who will take their time to explain what each dish/beer is and willing to give their own input on favorites.

Their beer selection is absolutely overwhelming (and expensive). I've never seen so many beers where I have literally zero knowledge about the kind of beer. That being said, you're always in for a new beer adventure every time you step in to La Trappe.

The food is excellent. Homemade favorites, such as mac and cheese and spaghetti are done exceptionally well. I had the Fish Gratin, which was an explosion of flavor. You can tell this is a popular dish because when we arrived, there was only 1 left for the night. Of course this review is not complete without some say about the fries. The fries are good, double fried and served with an assortment of sauces (you choose 2). Fries are good to share amongst 4 people.

La Trappe is great either as a casual place to have some beer and fries or a whole complete meal. The downstairs area is so unique and surreal with a dark dungeon feeling. Be prepared to spend at least $40 for yourself for beer, fries, and an entree.I'd come back (especially for the mussels touted in the reviews), but I wish the prices weren't' so steep.

+ Food is okay. I have to say it is true -  the mussels are great. But the fries and mac n cheese is nothing to write home about.

    - Service is lousy.

+ Love the vibe and neighborhood.

    - WAY too expensive. Beer prices are ridiculous.

I will most likely never return.

The mussels in spicy tomato sauce is very good. Please order yourself a Chimay Blue.

The overall atmosphere is wicked good. One of my favorite restaurants/bars/hang out spots in SF.

Went here for a friend's bday party and looking at the reviews, I thought that the food would be outstanding.  I was a bit disappointed.  While most people got the steak and loved their beer, I ended up with a dish that was only OK.  I guess I should have gotten the mussels as recommended.  I am willing to try this place again, but only mussels and beer for me.

    + Good beer

    - Poor service. The bartender here has a serious attitude problem...not just to customers, but to life in general. My friends and I left because he got too difficult to stand.

Also, I've been here another time. They always say they are busy when I call in ahead of time, but whenever I come, it's empty...so...what's up with that?

This is a cramped, hectic, loud, underground (literally), dark, cozy, rich, beer drinking place. Long wait if you are eating. So if you are picky and need everything perfect avoid this place. If paying an extra $3 for beer makes you panic, then avoid this place. I think this is an okay place for  kids, but the food is more adult oriented.

I'd say this place is $$$, not $$ like yelp says. But I guess it depends on what you order. Last time I went we spent like $65 a person on just entrees and drinks. I wish I could provide insight on the beer, but my friend is the connoisseur. I will just say the beer is very impressive and the food is fine.

We went here for dinner this past weekend and loved it.  We're vegetarians, so generally we have a hard time with any cuisine resembling German, but La Trappe even had a vegetarian menu.  We got the dumplings, which my fiance loved, and the portobello hamburger, which I could not get enough of (it was stuffed with goat cheese!).

We also aren't usually big beer fans, but we thought we'd give it a try.  Our waiter was extremely helpful and knowledgeable and was able to suggest a few beers we might want to try.  My fiance got a fruit-infused Lambic beer that he loved, and I found a Belgian pale ale that suited me.

Also, they gave us the option of sitting downstairs or upstairs.  Downstairs was crowded and loud, and upstairs was empty.  We like quiet, so we sat upstairs and enjoyed our food together.

Good experience, good food, and good service.  The only downside is how expensive some of those bottled beers can get, but I guess that's just what happens when you have to import!

Last stop on a pub crawl!  Dark - den dark - I liked it.  Squid Ink - black IPA- yummy!

TIP: Watch how much you drink down there, because going down the stairs is much easier than coming back up.  I'm just say'n.

Also, if you like funky mayos and ketchups for your fries, this is your spot.  I always feel vanilla wanting the regular ketchup but the wasabi stuff is kinda good.  Don't judge me.

I love this spot! I stumbled upon it right before attending Cobb's Comedy. We were looking for a new restaurant to try out and just happened to be in the mood for Belgian.

Although I'm not much of a beer drinker, the Timmermans Framboise Lambic was stellar! In fact, I also tried the cherry lambic blend, which was my favorite by far. We ordered a bunch of small plates, e.g. sliders, mussels in a dark beer sauce, Portobello mushrooms, ratatouille, mac n' cheese, and of course a side of Belgian fries!

I highly recommend it as the perfect date spot! The atmosphere is cool and mellow, not at all pretentious. It's underground too, so feels like a hidden gem.

Lastly, the service is fantastic! The staff is accommodating and very helpful!

BF David L. and I have these little dates once a week where we explore one neighborhood at a time.  It was his turn and he chose North Beach.  I would imagine that we would eat at an Italian place, but he had other plans...

The downstairs was PACKED.  I mean packed. The bar top was filled and the booths and tables were filled with beer drinkers.  We somehow got the attention of a busser who put us on the wait list and also recommended beers for us.  We couldn't pronounce it for the life of us so he wrote them down for us to show the bartender.  Bartender wasn't too friendly, but I suspect it's because his bar was crowded and getting a bit out of control.  We got our drinks and sipped them and people-watched while we waited for a table to open up.  No more than 10 minutes is what it felt like when the Asian busser came to us and asked us if we wanted to sit upstairs.

    HELL YEAH!

We sat upstairs literally, next to the door, so cold air came around us everytime the door opened.  Pretty wack, BUT we wanted to sit and it's not their fault it's cold, right?  Later on through the meal, the table next to us left and our kind server let us scoot over so we weren't' next to the door.

We ordered a few small plates.  the mussels and frites with the garlic white-wine, sardines and a smoked salmon salad.

The mussels were the highlight of our dinner.  We just kept dipping our bread and fries into that gorgeous broth.  The mussels were ridiculously good-  and it didn't cost an arm and leg.  The sardines were on point too, grilled, served with lemon, fennel and a duo of herb sauces.  The smoked salmon arugula was great too-  served with a lemon vinaigrette, cherry tomatoes red onions and goat cheese. We also dipped our frites with the sauces they recommended.  Garlic mayo and spicy ketchup were good (We killed the garlic mayo first.  Duh)  I wanted to bring the mussels home, but for some odd reason, La Trappe doesn't allow guests to take home food?  Their excuse is because mussels go  bad.  Listen, I eat Chinese seafood all damn day, and I take that shiz home too.  It ain't bad, It's wasting!

I think the best part of our meal, aside from the mussels, was the service.  Not the bartender, really but more so our server and busser.  Our server was gracious, on-point and always around to help us.  The dining room was small and he somehow managed to practically dance the ballet weaving in and out of the limited space he had to drop off food.  I always appreciate good service, as I once did a heavy amount of time at the restaurant.

He told us he had to work St Patty's day, so we hooked him up extra, cause nothing's worse than working on a night where you should be enjoying beer and festivities, NOT serving obnoxious, singing drunkards.  We'll be back!

First off the beer menu in here is awesome - they have a great selection of beers. Some of the Belgian ones are definitely expensive but thats the price you pay for really good imported beers.

The food here though leaves a lot to be desired. My wife had the mussels which were OK. I had the steak which was pretty terrible, probably the worst steak I have had since arriving in San Francisco in July 2010. Maybe it was just a bad night for steak though.

Staff were friendly and helpful. Ambiance was good - we sat downstairs which I think is definitely better. I would go back to La Trappe for the beer alone if I was looking for Belgian beers. If I ate there again though I definitely order the mussels and not the steak!

My friends and I came here for my birthday dinner and we all loved it.  True to form all the girls showed up about an hour late, so the guys waited patiently drinking beers at the bar until we arrived.

The whole establishment is small and cozy.  Everyone that worked there was very friendly and when we finally showed up our waiter helped us pick out beers that would suit our likings.  We shared the french fry appetizers. Lots and lots of homemade sauces to chose from.  We had everything from soup, to mussels, to mac n cheese, to burgers (portobello and 100% grass fed organic).  Everything we ordered was delicious.

I just love this place. Love love love. Great place for an intimate dinner or just to grab some appetizers and drinks with friends after work.

Just because the upstairs dining room seems empty, don't think the place has no business.  The hot spot is downstairs where the bar is located.  The downstairs is like a cave - very dark but great ambiance.

Their beer list is like a five star restaurant's wine list.  A thick book that gives you history and information on the beers they carry.  Every beer has a brief description.  If you are stuck, the waiter can definitely help with the selection.  Like wine, different beer is served in different glassware.

What we enjoy most are their mussels and fries with their flavored dipping sauce, our favorites are wasabi mayo and curry ketchup.

This is a really awesome bar. The upstairs restaurant was deserted and looked closed on a Friday night, but my friend led me in and down the curved staircase in the center of the room, and suddenly I was in a super friendly local scene filled with great Belgian beer and food.
I don't even know what I drank because the bartender kept making amazing recommendations. I liked everything.
My favorite food thing was by far the polenta with mushrooms. Noms.

I've been here twice and I must say that, on the whole, this is a good spot.  The small plates are excellent, especially the mussels which are prepared in a variety of tasty ways.  Their entrees are also good, but somewhat overpriced; when I'm grabbing for the salt and pepper after a few bites, it tends to make me think they are skimping on some seasonings.

This place also has a great selection of Belgian beers.  Very tasty and quite potent, which might explain the unfortunately high douchebag factor, and the fact the place is NOISY AS HELL.  My girlfriend and I were trying to have a nice meal, but crowds of people standing next to our table (and I mean, dude, your ass is in my face!) along with occasional "WOOHOOOO!!" made it un-enjoyable.  I mean, we weren't really interested in hearing about the "bitches" that Chet "banged" in down in Cabo during Spring Break, but as he was yelling right next to our table, it was kinda hard to ignore.  Hope you used a condom dude.

Luckily, the service is really good, and our attentive server Matt was kind enough to move us to a table not encircled by douchbags and future trophy-wives (wipes?).  Thanks Matt, you are awesome.  You saved us from bailing and rescued the experience, somewhat.  It's just unfortunate that the management allows such rude behavior among the patrons, which is largely a result of overcrowding and overconsumption of alcohol.  It really destroys what could be a truly epic gastro-pub experience.

I'll probably go back because the mussels are too good to pass up, but if I were you, I would go early in the evening before everyone is drunk and rude.  Also, if you are looking for a romantic spot, don't go.  My girlfriend and I basically spent the whole evening not talking because we didn't want to scream at each other.  Food get 4s+ stars on the whole, but the atmosphere is quite lame.

La Trappe is Mecca for Belgian beer addicts.

With a good selection of beers (Belgian and otherwise) on tap and a overwhelming number by the bottle, La Trappe rocks.  The knowledgeable bar tenders can not only suggest a beer that will match each individual's taste preferences, but also adeptly pair beer with different foods.

While beer is the star at La Trappe, the food is no slouch either.  Slightly spicy, the Thai mussels were delicious.  Crispy on the outside and soft and creamy in the center, the fries were perfectly cooked.  Also there is a plethora of dipping sauces--from roasted garlic mayo and Dijon mustard to spicy ketchup.

Service was pleasant, if a little slow.  Be sure to arrive early, as the place fills up by 7:00.

So many beers; so little time ...

I'll keep this short and sweet:

I did not come her for the food since we just ate at Swan Oyster Depot less than an hour before. We walked in about 530 and it looked like there was nobody in the place but then we discovered the basement. If you just want to drink they said you can sit at the bar or the lounge, always looks good to have a pregnant girl at the bar I think so I suggested to my wife we go to the lounge. We got luck because there were no tables taken when we arrived in the lounge but in about 10 minutes the entire lounge which holds about 12 was filled.

I tried these two beers and was happy with both.

Allagash Black and Silly Scotch Ale, "scotch de silly".

Allagash Black was not very heavy IMHO and it was a little dry on the finish for my taste but I'd take it over many others I've tried.

Silly Scotch Ale was nice and sweet without the strong taste of a strong ale although it still packed a punch of 9%.

Another notable find on the bottle list was the Santa's Little Helper aged in Boubon Barrels which I've had before and love but did not want to spend $32 on the bottle.

Over all cute, cozy, calm environment (at 6pm that is since I can see this place filling up quickly) to chill and taste a beer. I'd go back for sure if I lived there.

Can't really review as I looked at the prices and left.  $36 for a bottle of ABT 12?  Are you insane.  I can name 5 places I can go and get this on tap for normal prices.  I can understand charging high prices for rare or exotic beers, but they charge for everything Belgian.  Unless you have no other beer drinking options, avoid.

We stopped in here for dinner saturday night around 8pm.  There was some space open upstairs but the downstairs was packed.  Being our first time there we walked downstairs to check it out.  I liked it a lot, especially the slanted rock wall.  Totally different vibe than upstairs.

The wait downstairs was 45min or more so we took the open table upstairs (near the door which made it cold but we were hungry).  Our waiter was serving everyone on that level (plus a food runner or tw) and did a good job for being so busy.

    We ate:
Salmon toast: Toast with smoked salmon/fromage blanc spread, radishes.  It was ok but a bit more bland than I would have throught.  The smoked salmon didn't add enough saltiness so a little sprinkle of salt over the radishes really helped.

Mussels: we had the traditional white wine version.  It was good and very similar to the ones we ate in Brussels this summer.   Good firites too.  The garlic aoli was good (salty) and the curry ketchup was tasty too.

Rabbit stew: Also quite good.  Tender rabbit and a nice sized serving.  The mashed potatoes were good too.

We drank: 1 La Chouf and 1 Rochefort 8.  Delicious of course.

Overall we liked it.  The service was fast and friendly and the beer list was impressive.  I'd go back and hopefully get a seat downstairs.

The staff is slow and pretentious. The service is seriously lacking. With all the beers on tap, we requested a taste to determine what to order. The bartender refused to pour a sample and suggested we buy a pint. "And if we don't like it, but a different pint." With all the competition in North Beach, I can't believe this place is still in business. I won't be going back again.

I would like to give this place a 5 but since I have only been once...4 it gets.

After a day of Macworld, I came here with a few close friends.  Luckily we got here right before the dinner rush so we were able to be seated with no problems. I would say if we got in about 30 min later...we would have had to wait to get seated

The beer menu is like 30+ pages long with at least 5 beers w/ description per page.  The food menu on the other hand is like a page front and back.

We all tried to order something different... in short it was all yummeriffic!!~

    Mac n cheese was delish.
Oysters w/ the sauces were nom.
Mussels...I dun even know how to describe the awesomness.
The salad with salmon n goat cheese was full of flavor...just enough dressing too.
Oh!!~ the fries...the fries were just like any ordinary fry, but the have 11 different dipping sauces...since we couldn't decide we had 1 of each.

La Trappe is now one of my favorite bars on the planet.  My husband and I were visiting SF recently and spotted La Trappe from the trolley.  When we hopped off, we made our way back as it looked like just our kind of joint.  I'm so glad we went in.  What an amazing little place!  I had some of my favorite beer of my life (Nautilus from Pacific Brewing Laboratory) at the bar downstairs.  I also had a really interesting coconut porter.  Their beer selection is inspired, with selections you won't find almost anywhere else.  The basement bar area is really adorable with interesting photos on the wall (one of Edith Piaf's dead stuffed cat) and a neat little cave area with seating.  The music playing was also perfectly suited to me - The Cure, Flock of Seagulls, etc.  LOVE this place!

yummmm MUSSELS!!! You can resist the mouth-watering, tasty little things boiled in fennel and delicious broth you just want to drink up but slowly with mussel shells. This was just a starter and it comes with fries plus sauces you can pick. I got the scallops which was a special. The seared scallops were definitely raw enough inside to keep it soft and the sauce was so great. I couldn't even tell what was in it, but I loved it. I wish I could have more of it.

I can eat dozens of mussels myself. I wish it could be AYCE.

My friend and I were looking to grab something to eat before going out. We parked close to this place and decided to eat here because Belgian food was a mystery to the both of us and we were both curious.

The place looked empty when we walked in but we were lead downstairs to the more crowded pub area. Overall atmosphere was very cute in the old-fashioned pub way it looks. The menu was semi-interesting food-wise. Beer menu was HUGE (a whole ALBUM of different types of beers and descriptions). They had a cheese and wine menu too.

Our server was nice but wasn't that good about checking up on us. Average. Granted, the place was a bit busy. Everyone who was working seemed to be rushing to get things done (whatever they were doing).

I ordered the moules pastis (creamy baked mussels) with an Affligem blonde (Belgium ale) while my friend got the chicken videe (shredded organic chicken with cream in a puff pastry).

The mussels were delicious. I was very happy with my choice. The fennel sauce really added a nice depth of flavor to the entire dish. Without it, it would have been just okay. I wasn't particularly happy with the slice of bread they gave me since they placed it on my platter to make it look normal...but was burnt on the other side.

The beer was pretty good. It was exactly what I was expecting based on the description in the beer menu. My friend said her chicken was pretty good too. Nothing too special.

Overall good place. I expect that this place is best for their beer rather than the food but I liked the food too. It might vary depending on what you order.

Probably the best beer bar in the city. It is a Belgian beer bar, so don't expect to watch the big game here. The best thing to do is to go in when it's slowish, sit at the bar and talk beer with the owner and bartender. Most know a lot about beer and you can sample the drafts (of which they have a ton) before buying.

It's a bit pricey as all Belgian bars are and they will not let you take beer out of the bar which is bs.

The menu is small, but good. I don't know if all Belgian food is like this but it is RICH.

During a recent trip to SF to visit my brother we went to La Trappe after dinner and I don't think I'll ever be the same. If Alagash Interlude is the Lost Ark then call me Indiana Jones because I will not stop till I find it on the East Coast (or does that make me the Nazis?)

The bartenders were awesome, and extremely knowledgeable. They gave us a full spectrum of sour beers but due to the potency of the Interlude I can't remember what they were.

Is La Trappe franchising in Philadelphia any time soon??

Great Belgian beer selection & tasty frites!

Being a beer snob, I recommend that you ask to pour your own bottle (unless you don't mind yeasty sediment.)

FYI - Don't be fooled by the empty restaurant upstairs.  They bar area is in the basement.  IMHO - I think they should switch-up the two usages so that potential customers on Columbus Ave can see happy patrons enjoying great beer (but then again... I'm not responsible for the remodel cost.)

    Nothing.

    ***Recommendation***
Browse the beer menu. It will overwhelm you in a good way. It is awesome. This place is amazing.

Came here with a group on a Saturday night. We hung out in the lounge while we waited for a table, which took a while, but our service ambassador was offered two free beers as an apology for our wait. The wait staff was really accommodating and helpful when it came to ordering beer--they were very willing to chat with us about our selections and offer recommendations, even though the establishment was quite busy at the time. Made us feel right at home :)

At the table, we had a couple orders of fries (there are lots of sauces to pick from, which is a lot of fun), and several of us ordered the boudin blanc, which is a white pork sausage served with a potato cake and cream sauce... absolutely delicious. Unforgettable. A little pricey, but definitely worth it for a special occasion.

I've always had a great time here--the beer selection is a lot of fun, and as I mentioned, the staff is great. The atmosphere is cozy, well-decorated, warm and inviting. As my boyfriend puts it: "I wish this place was underneath my house."

By far the best Belgian beer bar in SF (trumps monk's kettle in service, selection AND price).

The beer here is legit. If you love crafty beers on draft, this place will be pure heaven. I had the Peche Mel and the Duchess here. Both were delicious. If you like strong fruit flavored beers, the peche mel is the way to go. Please stop and smell it before your first sip. Its fragrance is absolutely delightful and totally fruity without being overly powerful. The duchess is a sour beer that pretty much tastes like black cherry champagne. I'm HOOKED. A glass of the beers will cost you $8.50-$9.50 on average. There are more expensive bottled beers available if you want to go all out. As an amateur of craft beers however, I'm well satisfied with the $8-$9 selections.

The ambiance is warm, cozy, and underground. One star off for being sat next to a huge portrait of Edith Piaf's stuffed dead cat. Its face is literally grotesque. It looked like it was rotting and molting all at once. Not exactly the most appetizing view, which is a shame because the food is so very appetizing.

For example, take the Belgian fries. You can choose from a variety of  dipping to accompany them. From roasted garlic mayo to dijon mustard or spicy ketchup, these fries are sure to delight the palette. I also had the Chicken Videe which was shredded chicken cooked in yummy cream sauce and baked in a flaky, puffed pastry. I was afraid it would taste like chicken pot pie (which I do not enjoy), but to my surprise it was really great! Not too salty and not too heavy (which summarizes how I feel about chicken pot pie). The Chicken Videe is served over a bed of greens, which creates a really nice balance.

I will definitely come back to this place to try more beers and eat more delicious food!

I went to La Trappe on a Friday night with a party of 10 for my birthday. They don't seat your party until everyone is present. All ten of us arrive fashionably late. Typical.

Three of us had the moules frites and shared, and everyone else had a different assortment of foods: burgers, pastas, what have you. Needless to say, everything was delicious. But who cares, right. I think we all come to La Trappe for the hundreds of different kinds of beer that they serve.

There's also a bar downstairs, so while you dine you'll get used to a steady stream of buzzed people coming up the stairs. Overall, great food and an awesome atmosphere for the start to a fun Friday night. I'd definitely come back.

Solid recommendation from a SF native (kudos James!). An incredible amount of beer selection. Ultra good and ultra strong. Fair warning...

The lounge area downstairs is a good compliment to the dining area. We wanted very badly to get some frites with customary mayo in true Belgian form, but didn't want to ruin our appetite for west coast sushi.

Not cheap...one of the more expensive stops during our trip, but totally worth it.
