How can you not give this place 5 stars? It's brilliant! Well not brilliantly clean, but it is on East Hastings!
Guy working there is so genuine and simply awesome, I have no words for him. Calling everyone 'my friend' and patiently answering on all of our not so bright questions and giving everyone a chance to try and pronounce frijoles charros con queso?huh?
I tried all the veggie ones and the fish one. They were all delicious, especially the one with the fish! Amazing flavour! Next time, I'm ordering four of those!
My friend devoured the meat ones before I even managed to put chipotle on my plate! I can safely assume he freakin' loved them!

p.s. Beer is so cheap here!

I'm from California (San Francisco Bay Area) and I have been craving good carnitas since I moved here for school.

    Thank God for La Taqueria!!

I stopped in here today on my lunch break for a carnitas quesadilla and a glass bottle coke. Really delicious and greasy and cheesy and meaty, all in the best way possible. My quesadilla came with a side of sour cream which was absolutely perfect. I love sour cream so I was definitely a happy camper.

The quesadillar isn't massive but it's filling, especially with the carnitas. I'll definitely be back on a regular basis.

I am not a huge fan of Mexican food. When I think of tacos, I think of Old El Paso (I know, I know, that's not real Mexican food!).

I came here by chance as our first choice of restaurant, Nuba, was closed for the day, but La Taqueria was open (and, no line up! According to my friend who works downtown and who frequents this restaurant often enough, this is apparently quite unheard of!)

I ordered the tinga de hongos (mushrooms and onions in spicy chipotle sauce), the pescado (grilled fish), and the asada (grilled beef). As they weren't busy that day, one of the cooks delivered my plate and pointed out which taco was which to me. The spicy chipotle sauce in the mushroom taco was in fact, mildly spicy, which I quite enjoyed. The fish taco was probably the best of the bunch, whereas I thought the asada was pretty bland and uninspiring. I did not like the corn tortillas at all: I found them to be a bit dry and somewhat doughy.

I am still not convinced that tacos are as amazing as my friend proclaims them to be, although I did enjoy my taco at Latitude on Main St. Take my review with a grain of salt, as I repeat, I am not a fan of Mexican food.

I have to start by admitting I had extremely low expectations for Mexican food in Vancouver.  I am from California, born and grew up in NorCal, went to uni in San Diego, and have calculated that I've probably spent about 4 months of my life in Mexico when you add it all up.  I love Mexican food, and consider myself to be somewhat of a connoisseur.  I'd had Mex in Portland, Seattle, and random other places before...and just overall felt that there was not much hope to be had for Mexican food in Vancouver.

So what made me go here?  The slogan.  It's hilarious.  If you don't know what "Pinche Taco Shop" means, find a Spanish speaker and get them to translate it.  I had to go in just because of that.  I had a pastor taco and an asada taco.  They serve TJ-style street tacos: little guys mostly full of meat and onions.  Throw some hot sauce on top, and you're good to go.  The asada was pretty good; nothing really too special about it.  The pastor was AMAZING though.  I'm not sure if it was naturally spicy, or if it was the habañero sauce I threw on top...but that thing put my mouth ON FIRE (in a good way).  They put pineapple on top of it too, which I'd never seen done directly before, but was brilliant.

On my way out, I had to grab a coke to put out the flames in my mouth.  The guy at the counter asked me how it was.  I told him exactly my thoughts here: "I didn't expect to find such great Mexican food in Canada."  His response?  "You never know where the Mexicans will be!"  I left with a huge smile on my face, a full belly, and a coke to attempt to ease the pain of the searing in my mouth.  If I ever go back to Vancouver, I'm definitely making a stop in here (or 10).

Love this place and all their burritos... my only complaint is the price.  To actually fill me up, I need to get 5-6 meat burritos and that ends up being around $15.  Not cheap, considering what you're getting..

Still though, there's nothing else like it in Vancouver and their quality is very high.

I'd love to give this places lots of stars but for me it was cramped, crowded, portions were too small for the price (4 for $10) and hyped.  Apart from that and the fact that Vancouver has little to no options for decent Mexican food, I gave it that many stars. I preferred the veggie options, and the homemade sauces were nice but afterwards I was still hungry (and I ordered 4 tacos and I'm not a big girl).  Not a family friendly place to go, you wouldn't be able to get a stroller in there at this location but I guess it's good enough for a fast lunch that's different from the usual sushi/noodle bar/ fast food on every other Vancouver corner. Fast service though and generally friendly but not overly friendly in the usual superficial way.

Give me all the tacos.  This place is seriously authentic and amazing - hand made tortillas, great ingredients, decent prices, veg and vegan options - they have GREAT tofu tacos and you should definitely try  the Frijoles Charros Con Queso -love-.  I really appreciate that they let you take their cute little plastic plates to Victory Square on sunny days (as long as you bring them back).

Beware: You have to order the taco's in spanish! (who knew two l's in spanish sounds like y?)

Oh horchata, you taste like a liquefied cinnamon bun/churro! This was my first time trying it out and it's not bad but I personally think it doesn't go with the tacos.

Aside from my usual pollo con mole and beef tongue tacos, I tried the seasonal fish taco which was tasty. I suggest eating that first before all the other tacos or the mild flavour gets lost. Again, I have yet to try the birria taco that I was so looking forward to but wasn't there due to the fish taco.

Srsly, seriously, SERIOUSLY good effing tacos. I'm talking the genuine article -- corn tortillas, beef tongue, lime on everything, pork cheeks, perfect guac, actual *spicy* sauce, local ingredients and not an old el paso to be found.

Just watch out -- these little guys might be tiny, but they offer serious south-of-the-south-of-the border flavour.

Friends, we have Mexican food in Vancouver. Frrill-like.

Best tacos in Vancouver hands down.

Staff there are very friendly and pleasant to deal with. Their food is always fresh and reasonably priced. Great for lunch dinner or snack! I introduced a co-worker of mine when our office was downtown and even after we have moved to a new location, he is still jonesing to go. This is the power of La Taqueria.

Their lengua is probably one of the best I've ever tried EVER. Beef cheeks and the corn/cream tacos are also outstanding. Oh, they offer free Horchata on Tuesday when you get 4 tacos (4 meats: $9.50 / 4 veggies: $7.00).

After hearing all the hype, I finally made it to La Taqueria for lunch yesterday with a girlfriend.  The shop was small, the line was long and the endeavour seemed daunting.

However, the super smiley staff made sure everyone made it through the line in a very short time (a plus when you've got a limited lunch break) and by the time we paid, two seats had opened up for us.

I'm a *huge* fan of Mexican food, the more authentic the better, in my opinion. While nothing tops food actually made and served in Mexico, the palm-sized tacos at La Taqueria are a close second.  For $9.50 I could choose four different tacos and I settled on the beef, pulled pork, fresh fish and cowboy refried beans with cheese.  All were equally good so I refuse to play favourites and sway you in a certain direction.

It's not much of a date or dinner spot, but I wouldn't hesitate to make my way back to La Taqueria for lunch again very soon!

I love this place.  It's everything you want. The menu is short, they only do a few things but they do them so well. They make the food about as quickly as I eat it. I admit I inhale my food but that's because I love it so much. Yes I taste every bite.  And lastly they are friendly. So much yummy goodness.

These tacos do not need to be graded on a curve (like best tacos this far north or for the price)... they are great by any standards.  Fresh, local, variety, and super tasty.  Throw in some nice decor and fast, friendly service and it unquestionably earns all five stars.

HOLY F-bomb! This place has the most chronic asada quesadillas i've ever had in my life. This is my new favorite guilty pleasure/comfort food spot. For four bucks  (plus tax, of course) you get 3 little quesadillas. Just thinking about it is making my mouth water. I will go back again and again to try all their items. Just throwing that out there! CHRON-CHRON!

I love Mexican food. I also love tacos. Therefore, I love, love La Tacqueria.

When I worked in Gastown a block from the Hastings shop, I went every single week and I still usually hit up the newer Cambie location with the same frequency.

I go so often I have a random of cell phone photos from all the deliciousness there I gobble up.

I've tried all the meat ones and my favourite is the Pescado grilled fish taco. I get two every single time. I also love the Al Pastor pork ones. And be sure to get the chorizo ones when they're available on special.

I love La Taqueria, and it's quickly become my favourite place for a quick and tasty dinner whenever I'm in the area. The place is friendly, and the tacos are super fresh, full of flavour and good value at $7 for four veggie or $9.50 for four meat.

As for the different options, the fish taco is king for me, and I have to force myself to not order it every time: gorgeous seasonal grilled fish and fresh pico de gallo combine to mean that a plate of four tacos are wolfed down as soon as the plate hits the table. Pretty much everything else is great though, with the carnitas and beef cheeks being the other stand out options. The only less than great choices I've had have been the re-fried beans (fine, but nothing special) and the Mexican chorizo special (spot on texture and not too greasy, but a little lacking in flavour compared to the other options).

And as for portion size, I disagree with previous complaints - 4 tacos is plenty enough for dinner, and I can eat!

I came here when I arrived too late to visit Meat and Bread down the street and what a fantastic decision!  It's easy to miss this place, as I nearly walked right past their door, but it's worth turning around and going in.  The guys working there were extremely friendly and engaging and really want you to enjoy yourself and your food.

I ordered the 4 tacos for $10 and picked: chicken mole, asada, al pastor (pork & pineapple), and the somewhat adventurous de cachete (beef cheeks, eek!). The asada was boring and the most disappointing of my tacos. I later noticed a salsa bar behind me that might have solved that problem, but considering how much I loved the other three items on my plate, I would probably skip the asada next time.

The chicken mole had a lovely spice to it, kicky but not overly hot.  I tried the al pastor taco first and it was fantastic, especially for someone who loves pineapple.  I was a little nervous about the de cachete, having never eaten beef cheeks before, but I was blown away by the incredible flavor of melted meat.  The tacos were all fresh and super hot, almost to the point of not being able to pick them up. I will definitely make a point to stop by here next time I am in Vancouver, and as a bonus, they take credit cards!

Like Suiki, I spent a lot of time in NY in the Hispanic part of Queens; Jackson Heights, to be exact, which pretty much makes Astoria look like Broadway in Vancouver (if one were to take away Suiki's taco truck, that is).

Maybe I was around the 'hood too often, but I'm not a huge fan of authentic Mexican. Give me some So-Cal Tex Mex any day. So consider my review with a grain of salt.

If you feel the same way as I do, this just might not be your place. I am going to add an extra star for those who "love" authentic Mexican...at least everyone around me seemed to enjoy it! The place was packed!!!

Pros: cute little restaurant and ambiance, clean and friendly, a variety of tacos, moderately priced. (4 for $10; less for all veggie) Line-ups out the door, but they move quickly, even at lunch hour on a weekday.

Cons: quite small as others suggested; only served in corn tortillas. (I despise corn tortillas and these were no different, even if they were soft and prepared with love).

    For those less daring, eat:
    1. Al Pastor- Pork marinated in chile with pineapple-my favourite thing here!

    2. Pole Con Mole- chicken with mole sauce. I LOVE chocolate (mole) but did not adore this for some reason.

    Others:
    3. Pescado- grilled seasonal fish with pico de gallo; I personally thought it tasted fishy, but I was told that I was crazy and that it was good. :)

    4. Rajas Con Crema-roasted poblano peppers with creamed corn, mexican cheese and sour cream. I thought it looked terrible but I was told that it was really tasty. It wasn't bad, actually, if you didn't look at it while eating.

    5. Frijoles Charros Con Queso- basically, this is beans and white cheese, the same beans and cheese that poor Mexican children love and it's a staple for them. I thought that it was just okay but I was told that it was good. I do not love authentic, Mexican white cheese.

So there you have it. Two points of view in one. Definitely go now if you like "authentic Mexican." Skip it if you don't. I did spend a lot of time with the authentic spelling here as I want this place to succeed. They sure don't need me after all, and their dedication shows. Bonus points for the sign on the bathroom, and their own photo of their cart by the register. Look for them and you'll see what I mean.

I would also have no problem seeing Mexican-Canadians employing illegal Caucasians for minimum wage here but I can't really write that. :)

One visit was all it took for me to become infatuated with this place. The biggest running joke among my friends is that I don't like Mexican food. I just think it's because I've never had really good Mexican food and now I have. It was in Canada of all places.

We had already eaten lunch but the boyfriend really wanted to check this place out before we left town. I figured that I would tag along and try a bite. It started with the incredible aroma, I decided maybe I would try a bite of each taco he got. Then I saw the menu full of appealing items. I instantly forgot that I had already just eaten lunch and decided maybe I needed my own taco....

I highly recommend the Rajas con Crema (roasted poblano peppers with creamed corn) and the Carnitas. Pretty cool that they had several vegetarian options as well.

It seemed like everywhere we went in Vancouver the employees were competing to see who could give the best and friendliest service. This place was no exception, we were greeted by every single employee and they were all so helpful and accomodating. One of them even took the photo (see attached) of the bathroom sign for me because I thought it was cute. The place  was busy and they seemed to keep the line moving fast, serving up their delicious tacos.

In the end, I think I ended up eating half or more than half of his plate of tacos. I'm not ashamed, these tacos were so yummy I would do it all over again! Well maybe next time I would get my own plate of tacos!

These are real tacos.  Sure it's a small brightly decorated place on Hastings. Sure it's always super crowded and they only recently started accepting anything more than cash. Sure they only have a few drink options, but hey we're talking about real tacos!

Soft corn tortillias filled with local fresh ingredients. For about $8 you can get 4 veggie tacos (3 of which can be made vegan).

I've always had great service and I love the fresh, fast, little tacos!

Oh my god. My friend and I visited Vancouver for the first time and we walked in here and ate some of the best tacos we have had in our lives. They were SO GOOD that we deemed the meal "untoppable" and came here again for lunch the next day. When I visit a new city I never do this, I always want to try new places... so a repeat visit is a big deal.

We tried over half the tacos on the menu but agreed our favorite was the creamed corn one (Rajas con Crema). Although honestly there was not a taco I disliked, they were all really good.

The dudes working are super nice!! Don't forget to squirt some of the hot sauces onto your tacos. They don't need anything extra but the sauces are so good I couldn't help it. And take your plate to the nearby park on a nice day to eat your tacos. I can't wait to come back!

Also, this place is conveniently located across the street from the New Amsterdam Cafe.. that's all I'll say about that.

During my years of living in New York City, I would travel the distance from Manhattan to Astoria, Queens for the El Rey Del Taco Truck - it's the ultimate late night comfort and cheap eats in the city. When I moved back to Vancouver, I was in search for the ultimate soft shell taco place and I found it at La Taqueria Taco Shop. Located on Hastings st and Hamilton near the Victory Square, La Taqueria serves up authentic taco goodess using local organic and sustainable ingredients. The decor is very colorful and cultural mirroring a Mexican fiesta.  Seating is limited; therefore, be prepared for a line up during lunch or simply ask for take-out.

On the menu, they feature over 12 types of Meat or Veggie tacos ranging from beef cheek, beef tongue, pork confit, chicken, seasonal fish and tofu. All their tacos are served with onions, cilantro and lime. You can order 1 taco for $2.50 or 4 for $9.50. For lunch, I ordered,

De Lengua - braised Pemberton meadows beef tongue - this is as authentic as it can get. I love the texture of the beef tongue.

Prescado - grilled seasonal halibut with avocado lime cilantro - the fish was cooked perfectly - very moist and juicy. The special avocado sauce brings out the flavour of the fish.

Carnitas - pork confit with pickled red onion - the pork was very moist and flavourful.

De Cachete - braised Chiliwack pork cheeks - this is my least favourite but still good.

Overall, I really enjoyed the food and the quality of the ingredients.  This is a great place for a quick lunch or " Grab n' Go"  - not the ideal setting for a sit down meal.

I've lived in Europe for the past 2.5 years.

There are many things Europe does well - fashion, wine, beer, beautiful people, art, culture, some politics, socialized healthcare, starting wars, old buildings, secularism, kinky sex, neutrality to name a few.

But there are a few things Europe is horrible at - immigration, rap (with some exceptions), flirting, dating, manbags, and worst of all...

    ...MEXICAN FOOD.

Don't get me wrong. There was Mexican food there. But hiring an authentic-looking Mexican guy to open a can of imported Old El Paso refried beans and fart it onto a plate does not equate to Mexican food (and if it does, stop reading now because you've insulted me).

So when I returned from my taquerialess existence, I had a craving for some proper Mexican food. Now keep in mind, when I think taqueria, I think of five tiny Mexican guys slaving over a wide grill of lengua and carnitas and asada, sweating their enormous hearts out to feed us and in return feed their families in an SF Mission taqueria where speaking English seems just about as ridiculous as trying to gain American citizenship. While I, on the other hand, show up at their taqueria after leaving my high-paying white collar job early because I was too hungover to work following a night doing jagerbombs and lines of coke off a tranny hooker's backside.

So I totally went to this place La Taqueria today because I haven't had proper Mexican food in a while. And I was totally craving it. And it's "Hot on Yelp" which must mean it's "Waiting for me to make love to it".

So I visited this place for lunch today after driving two hours to make a u-turn at the Canadian border to get my work permit. I felt I deserved a bit of taco love.

Truth be told, the place isn't that authentic. It's not like the taco stands in Puerto Vallarta. It's not like the Mission taquerias. There were no non-English speaking Mexican guys slaving over a grill yelling at each other.

But that doesn't mean it was bad. It was actually very good - a sort of *gourmet* taqueria. I go the four meat taco plate for $9.50 and took one of their special tacos of the day which was an organic lamb. I added to that an asada taco, an al pastor taco, and a pollo con mole. The mole didn't have quite the punch I like in moles, but all the meats were wonderfully cooked. The flavors were good, but I like a bit more spice and kick. The horchata was excellent and I highly recommend it.

The service was great, but get this...it was overdone. They kept asking me how the food was and I kept saying great. And when I left they asked me again. But it seemed like they were going through the motions and didn't really care. I should've totally been like "It was great the entire time. But that last bite tasted like poop! What happened guys???"

But the best part about it is, I didn't leave there feeling an exploitative white man's guilt (I'm brown, but just go with it.). I also didn't leave there feeling fat man's guilt - the food was actually healthy and fresh and not huge portions. But I did leave feeling a thrifty man's guilt. It's a bit pricey for what you get, so it's not a place you'd go to everyday. I recommend it for someone who wants just solid gourmet taqueria type food.

This was a great place to come for a quick, casual meal before a movie downtown.

It seems like most customers get a plate of 4 tacos. My favourites of my four were the beef cheek and the beef tongue. Next time I'm definitely getting two of each of them.

The tacos are tiny and delicious. The service was friendly and prompt. The bar of add-on salsas and sauces was cool.

OK, first of all I read some reviews and I have to tell you guys...
REAL TACOS does NOT come with lettuce or pinto beans... REAL TACOS from Mexico City where the tacos actually STARTED (not in Vallarta or other states where when we people from Mexico City go don't actually find the real MEXICO CITY tacos...) are actually small as this ones...

So for all those complaining about how small or how there is no sour cream or pinto beans... CALIFORNIA mexican food is not REAL TACOS.

That said, THIS PLACE IS AWESOMEEEEEEE!!!

Yes I am from Mexico city, the place is totally original, authentic until say no more, music is totally what I used to listen in any mexican radio... Staff is AMAZING! well... I totally feel at home!

To that add the fact that food is AMAZING!!!! real mexican food, made from SCRATCH with the best ingredients, yeah I know is a little in the pricey side BUT to me, is worth it... every penny! I go there and order 8 tacos, horchata water or Sangria (which you guys should totally give a try cuz in every mexican taqueria there is some) and I leave feeling awesome, happy and my taste buds in heaven!

So a few tips for the newbies... try the Al Pastor tacos, put some lime, some guacamole and if you like spice some de arbol sauce and enjoy... Al Pastor are the most popular most delicious tacos in Mexico city. Then go ahead and order some chicken with mole, charros beans, and when the special comes around try the Cochinita pibil which is pulled pork in an amazing sauce that will knock your socks off, put some pickle onions on it, lime and just a touch of habanero on it... UFF!!! Also other worthy specials to try are Home made chorizo ( I mean HOME MADE CHORIZO! not even in Mexico we make it at home! lol) and the Birria (lamb).

For the Al Pastor lovers try this, order quesadillas with pastor, ask them to put the pineapple in them and put some lime, sauce and OMG!

Anyways, this place is all I need to be 100% happy living in Vancouver... so go with an open mind,  remember this is no taco time there is not going to be any lettuce, "pinto" beans or cheddar cheese... so get over it people! lol.

I LOVEEEE this place and I think that everyone should give it a try!

I'm not sure why this place has so many 4 and 5 star ratings. Their tacos were meh. Mostly, the meat was so bland (I tried the De Lengua ones). Presentation was nice and the tacos looked pretty, yes, but I am all about the taste! Especially for a place that only does one dish, really.... tacos should be SUPERB here. But they aren't. And definitely way too overpriced. You get an itty bitty taco you can eat in one mouthful for $2.50. The tortillas are not as soft and fresh as they should be. I could just go on and on about what is wrong with their tacos...

It's like what another reviewer said here; this is just another case of Vancouver making something so simple (like tacos) so complicated and messing it up entirely. I've had better tacos from food trucks, especially those in the States.

(I might have some really high expectations of Latin American food since I grew up in California)

Sorry, La Taqueria, but I just don't understand the appeal of your tacos. Maybe I just can't find decent tacos north of the border? This makes me really sad... :(
