This is Comfort French Dining at its finest. Im talking food so good you'll wanna kiss it off the lips of your lover. This is the kind of place you want to go if you are looking to treat your partner to a 3 corse meal for that special night.
The lighting is dim, the tables are cosy and wether it be crazy busy or you are eating with crickets, it wouldn't change the wonderful time you would have.
Excellent service, and I mean top notch. Please feel free to get up at the end of your meal for a peek at the lovely desserts. Please try the Floating Island, its just heavenly. To start off the meal however, I often order the Beets with Parmesan, this dish is served cold with a creamy sauce lightly coating the dish. I have also had the French Onion soup, and La Escargots en crouton.
For your main, if you are a pork lover my mate loves to order the Pork Sirloin with sautéed apples and potatoes. This dish is served on a hot pan fresh from the oven. I dont think there has been a time he has ordered something other then this dish, as it is indeed his favorite.
As for me, I prefer the Grilled Prime Rib. This dish is served with shallots cooked to perfection, cooked whole garlic and potatoes. I make sure to ask for mine to be mashed with a side of Peppercorn Gravy. Now don't get me wrong this might not sound like a dinner for a lady, but let me tell you, if you know anything about cooking, you'll appreciate this dish!
Make sure to book your reservations. Please save this event for smaller partys, as 2 - 4 seem a good size group for this quaint little bistro.
And please enjoy yourself. Don't fill up on every dish if you want dessert and coffee afterwards. Feel free to take some home, as the Floating Island is comparable to being on the sunny beaches of Maui...

I was pleasantly surprised by my first visit to La Regalade. I've never been 'in' to French cuisine and dinner here this evening has left me wanting to explore more. Shared the Gnocci & Prime Rib - Gnocci was delicious (fresh - not bland store-bought) and the meat was cooked to perfection w/ a flavorful au jus. Desert was the warm chocolate tart which came fresh from the oven (a must for any chocolate lover - heavenly!).
Restaurant ambience was pleasant w/ a euro-feel (although a little loud when full). All seats full on a Thursday evening! Service was excellent.
Will definately return again. -

I've wanted to go to this restaurant for a while, a place that is always busy in west van is rare! So my husband and I went for my birthday. I was a bit surprised at how casual it is and the seating is tight . I had a lamb dish that was a bit too rich for me but the halibut my husband had was to die for! So I ate his.The wine our waiter suggested was lovely. The tight seating that was a bit uncomfortable at first actually became a social party. We had a great time getting to know our table neighbors and shared a bottle of wine with them or 2 or 3 any way we closed the place . If I were to rate how good the night was by the severity of my head ache It was an excellent time! The energy, food and sense of community makes this little restaurant a gem in west van!

Solid 4 stars!
Great little neighborhood gem. Excellent Service and large portions; you will leave here completely satisfied and full.
Desserts looked great but could hardly handle water by the end of the night.
Ordered the Gnocchi and would totally order it again. Love it! -

Third time here, so I was excited to have the food again.
We made a reservation for 8pm and got there about 20 minutes early hoping to get a seat ahead of time. No go as it was crammed full, so we wait at the bar to enjoy a drink. We must have waited 10 minutes before anyone actually stopped to ask us if we'd like a drink. We had our drink then another and the couple next to us let us know they'd already been waiting 40 minutes for their reservation! Didn't give us much hope as most tables looked like they were quite comfortable sticking around.
After one hour (no movie for us tonight!) we got shown to our table. We ordered right away as we'd had plenty of time to pore over the menu. Our food came, and was delicious, as always. The food is very good, no doubt. Flagging down a server was next to impossible as they were all running around like crazy.
We ordered dessert with cappuccino; the dessert came within minutes, but we had to wait about 20 for the coffees. There was no one person manning the bar so it was a crapshoot for when someone was available to make a drink.
Definitely not impressed at spending three hours trying to have a meal. Yes, the food was good, but it was a whole evening for two entrees and dessert. -

La Ragalade French Bistro, West Vancouver 2/14/2011
French Countryside Hospitality
It's Valentine Day to day, good time to take your love one to a special place for dinner. Since we never have French Cuisine before, there is no better place than go to this renowned French Bistro in West Vancouver called La Regalade. I don't know anything about French cuisine, when the waiter bringing a blackboard menu to us, we don't know what to look for since I don't read French. However the waiter suggested the following dishes for us:
APPRETIZE:
DUCK LIVER MOUSSE CROSTINI
Duck liver mousse on toast with letter salad
ENTRÉE:
CANARD
ROAST HALF DUCK WITH SAUTEED FRUIT (apple, grapes and blueberries) WITH SIDE OF
GRATIN DAUPHINOIS (scallop potatoes)
DESSERT:
TARTE TARTINE- apple pie with ice cream
All dishes are very tasty, good presentation and good portion; it's very good value.
I must add that as soon as we walk in the restaurant, immediately you have that country side feeling, its not too big but very cozy and everybody seems to be very friendly and helpful. When we leaving the restaurant, the owner's wife open the door and said Thank You in French to us. It really make you feel welcome, it's really French countryside hospitality. Thank you. -

As a native French, I will open by stating that this is maybe one of the best French restaurants in the North Shore. The steak was marvelously cooked, but did not wow me with any unique sides unlike many restaurants in Paris. The atmosphere is cramped and very loud, thus not being great to bring a date too. A family dinner or dinner out with friends is more the style.
It wouldn't truly be French cuisine if the bill didn't hang a rope around your wallet, so be prepared to pay a hefty price for your dinner.
Overall great establishment with a well trained cook and waiters with true unique personalities -

I went to La Regalade with three others on Friday evening. The atmosphere is so nice; the lights are low, the music is french, it is very busy and quarters are close but it feels bustling instead of annoying. Our server was French which was a nice touch although I'm sure that's not a requirement. The menu itself had very few items but there were a ton of features; maybe ten or fifteen?
I had the gnocchi which was fried lightly like perogies. It came with prosciutto, leeks and mushrooms and it was to die for. I have a big appetite and I was very full by the end of the meal (I did finish it). My boyfriend got the lamb which was a huge portion although it was lamb leg. He said it was quite good. One other person at the table got duck which was presented very nicely in a sweet fruit sauce and the portion was enormous.
All and all I had a very good time, and will most definitely return to La Regaade again. -

I really wanted to love La Regalade. Foody friends had suggested it as a place they loved. Even foreigners from the other side of the continent had told me I was lucky to live near it. So I went.
The service was fair, not bad, but not good. The place was cramped (with table spacing that somehow manages to feel cozy when it's done in Paris). I was buffeted by waiters butts every few moments as they squeezed by my chair (something I've never had happen in Paris).
If the food had been worth it, all of the above would just be atmosphere. Minor inconveniences justified by a supreme gastronomic experience. Sadly, the food was supremely ... ordinary. I understand the place has quite a following, but I really don't know why. Perhaps I'll give them another chance when the memory has faded. -

If you're dining at a true Parisian bistro there isn't enough room between tables for a waiter's butt to pass, let alone your sliding onto the neighbours plates as you squeeze out to leave.
La Regalade gives you the true French bistro food experience without the elbows in your sides, the tables so small it's a lego puzzle to fit the dishes on, smoke wafting up your nostrils and every other orifice and conversation impossible unless you want to share the family holiday with the adjoining 10 tables.
La Regalade is a gem, owners Alain and Brigitte two of the hardest working restauranteurs in the city. Also their son creates the most scrumptious desserts (I am addicted to the warm chocolate tart).
The portions are immense, cooked in cast iron pots, flavours tantalizing, and all meant to be shared with a hearty glass of wine. Nothing is boring and nothing is bad (except once when I had the calf's liver and it may have moo-ed).
The peppery short ribs are soaked in red wine, pepper bursting and lovingly layered with enough fat to make the moistest ribs. The Ensalade Regalade is my house stand out, I have the recipe at home but by the time I bought everything and made the dish the sun would have set and risen so not sure how they manage to get it in front of me in under 10 minutes and have me promptly demolish it in under 5.
There is a fresh board daily, literally a blackboard with the entrees written in that very French squiggle that the waiters carry from table to table and set on an easle. There is also the "French board" which I assume is for show and for the amateur foodie such as I to test my French menu skills.
The delight is you come to La Regalade for the food, the food is magnifique, and you leave full, happy, delirious and with leftovers, who can complain? It's open, loud, bustling, and you see everyone from your suited West Van lawyers, to your retired couples, families, lovebirds, friends and quite a few from the other side straggling in for the best French meal in the city.

We took my mom to La Regelade for mother's day after a few people recommended this restaurant and the fact my mom loves anything French!
Everyone in our group loved it! The restaurant is French bistro , busy, lots of action and an open kitchen concept. The service was excellent.. All of the casseroles were served in colourful cast iron dishes which gave a cozy comfort food feel.
We ordered a bunch of dishes to share and loved almost every one of them. I'd say the favourites of the night were the blue cheese and pear tart (melt in your mouth!), one of the specials of the day (prawn ravioli with lobster sauce), the beef bourguignon and the pork sirloin with sauted apples and potatoes was delicious! I'm not a fan of pork at all, but this dish changed my mind!
I'll be going back again -
Review from Sarah O.
The atmosphere here is unique, albeit the fact that the servers aren't very warm. The price range tends to be quite a bit more than I'd like to spend on lunch so I usually end up ordering from their daily menu that's written on the blackboard. Even then, be prepared to spend about $20~$25 for one person for lunch. I did enjoy the bread basket but not so much my meal. The mushroom omelet was too salty, the ceaser salad was small and the bacon on top was cold and unappetizing, and the fish, although the sauce was tasty, the fish itself had the consistancy of throw-up pate. Despite all this, I've been here a few other times and it hadn't been this bad.. I may come back for dessert sometime but don't hold it against me if I don't.

While the "rustic" decor leaves something to be desired, and the crowd isn't exactly hip, the food is out of this world. Many of the menu items are very pricey but we had the gnocchi and the pork on lentils, both of which were under $20 and quite large. The gnocchi in particular was unbelievable.

I've had a number of great meals at La Regalade and a one average meal. It's a great place in the fall/winter for traditional French bistro food - with an emphasis on braised meets - beef bourguignon, braised lamb shanks, 7 hour lamb (shoulder), veal cheaks, duck with winter fruit - all paired with great scallop potatoes and if you're lucky polenta (with the duck). Their desserts are very nice as well, tarte tatin, Isle Flotante and their raspberry tart in the summer - is an absolute treat. My last meal there was overly salty, which was disappointing, but I will be back. If it's good, they can keep the fourth star on this Yelp review ;o)
