San Diego, CA
I'm really surprised by the bad food reviews. I went here not expecting much after reading the Yelp reviews and I was pleasantly surprised with some great tasting food and awesome service!
I had the chile relleno and my sister had the mixed fajitas. The chile relleno was much neater and smaller than I'm used to (I've tried it at least 3 times at different places and just got a huge mound of deliciousness but you couldn't even tell what it was). This was two skinny peppers, very neat and clean looking, stuffed with cheese with sauce on top. The peppers had quite a kick, too! The rice was fantastic (with peas and corn) and the beans were beans. I was impressed that it came with sour cream and you didn't have to pay $2.50 to order a side.
I tasted both the chicken and the steak off my sister's fajita plate because it smelled so amazing! Both were tender and very nicely flavored! I was so wishing I would have ordered that instead but it was a little pricey ($16+ I think). She said it was worth it and enjoyed every bit of it except there was no cheese (her only complaint) but plenty of colorful peppers and tomatoes/onions.
The only weirdness was that I had a Groupon for $35 and our bill came to $33.50 and the waiter came and said that we had to use the full $35. So we ordered a coffee and tea and ended up owing $5 plus tip. That was weird. I mean, most places would let you know that you have $1.50 left and ask if you wanted to put it toward dessert or something but not force you to use the full amount. I guess it was a tax/tip issue. Not sure.... -

Fantastic Happy Hour!
Cheap tacos, carne asada fries, skip the ceviche, and the pork tacos, but the shrimp and steak tacos - mmmm!!
Cheap beer, great people watching - heaters even
Friendly staff, salsa is just ok, chips are great! -

We had a family outing here and thought it was great. I would have to say the location and people watching made this place a 5. However, with such a prominent location you have to have better Mexican food. Don't get me wrong it was good, but not great! I will try it again though. We had the fiajates and carne asada plate. Both very good. and the Margie's were too die for here. I will be back.

After making a reservation I was sat in between he front door and a giant Xmas tree. It wasn't very comfortable so I asked if another table was available. After ten minutes of confusion my girlfriend and I were moved to another table that needed to be stabalized. The food was pretty bad, boiled-bag beans and rice, a silly crinkled carrot garnished my dish. I ordered the seafood combo fajitas and received the steak and chicken fajitas, they fixed it but my girlfriends dish was cold by the time I got my correct order. This place is SUPER expensive for the food and the service that you get. Living off their location, I won't go back.

Cool location, right in the Gaslamp district. Cool place to people watch, but don't sit outside!! If you do, be prepared for people walking along the sidewalk to ask for change, or perhaps a dog will drop a deuce right next to your table. Seriously. (Thank God the owner picked it up)
For the food-- It is overpriced for what it is. The Perfect Margarita was not so perfect! Too much sweet and sour and I'm doubtful it was Patron that they served me. I ordered a beef chimichanga which wasn't crispy enough, the beef was nicely flavored and it came with a lame serving of what seemed to be canned re-fried beans. The side of rice tasted good, but it was a small serving. $15.95. She had the "Michocuan" it came with a chicken enchilada with green sauce, it tasted weird Also came with a Chili Relleno & it was really good! (Get the Relleno plate if you go). It also came with a pork Chalupa, and when I say Chalupa I mean a piece of pork in a tostada cup. The pork was good but not what we expected. They brought a basket of chips and salsa that was tasty & free.
Our server was a nice gentleman. He could have been more attentive but he was nice. The manager came by and asked us how service was and we said fine because it was.
I wont be visiting La Fiesta again. Much better options if you want Mexican food. -
Review from Jenn N.
The service was great but the food was uninspired. I ordered their signature dish: the fajitas. They bring them out on a hot plate sizzling and steaming, which is pretty cool. After that, the dish fell flat. It's served with bland guacamole and sour cream. I had to ask for a lime. Some of the chicken was over cooked and I couldn't even taste the chile sauce.
The chips and salsa were pretty good but for the price ($21 for fajitas and an iced tea), I won't be running back. -

Had a Groupon and came her on a weekend for lunch. Happy Hour is daily from 11am-6pm. They have a nice outdoor seating area and let us bring our dog. We called ahead to make sure we could bring dogs and small ones are fine. Our server, Megan, was awesome. Technically, you aren't allowed to use the Groupon for Happy Hour but she let us and also allowed us to customize our order. You rock, Megan! We ordered guacamole and chips ($5.95), nachos with both steak and chicken ($8.95), meat combo fajitas ($14.95), and tortilla soup ($6). The meat combo fajitas come with chicken and steak; both were tasty. Our eyes were bigger than our stomach and we had to box it up. Fun place and great service...definitely a place to try out and a Groupon success in my opinion.

Best free salsa ever ever!
It's smoky and sweet and spicy and memorable even a week later.
I didn't get to eat here, just stopped in for HH. Their $3 margaritas are not watery or sickly sweet and actually had a decent amount of tequila in it. And it comes in one of those big goblet things.
3 beers, 1 margarita, chips and the best salsa ever ever = $11 for hh. Amazing value! I'm going to eat here next time, the food looked good...Listed in: Bar Adventures

Dropped in here on Cinco de Mayo for a few Beers to celebrate Cinco de Drinko. There was a DJ playing and the place was packed on one side and half full on the other. I hung out on the half full side. The people watching was great.....lot's of drunk people providing a ton of entertainment.
Overall, it was a decent time.

HOLY CRAP, LA FIESTA!
You are my guiltiest of guilt pleasures. Not only do you please me by serving cerveza Victoria, but your crowd never ceases to amuse me.
DJ played some wack ass booty butt booty buttcheeks stuff with the occasional "Oh that's my jam!" kind of tracks.
Regardless, the Victoria is refreshing, and I shake it with my ladies and then WHOAH IS THAT GIRL GOING DOWN ON HER MANFRIEND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREAKING DANCE FLOOR?!"
I was so shocked I couldn't even be discrete, I pointed, my mouth wide open, "JESUS BREAKDANCING CHRIST IS THAT GIRL'S MOUTH REALLY ON THAT GUY'S PENIS RIGHT NEXT TO ME WHILE I WAS MINDING MY OWN BUSINESS DANCING!?"
Girl laughs and continues on her merry way.
I am scarred. I gulp my beer and wonder if there's any hope left for humanity.
Some douche bra with a popped collar and sunglasses (Uh, hello? It's after dark, we're inside, you're not a rockstar: NO) is all like, "Hey girl, let's go?" In true cliché 90s Beverly Hills-based sitcom "AS IF!"
What is this place? A dry hump fest? 3rd base?
Who gives a shit, as long as the Victorias are cold and the music is bump bump bumping Ima keep coming back!1 Previous Review: Show all »

San Diego, CA
My husband and I came here for dinner last night. As a local I'm always hesitant to eat dinner in the Gaslamp area, tends to be very overpriced and sub par food. La Fiesta was excellent and completely exceeded my expectations.
We started off with delightful STRONG margaritas. The chips on the table were a nice touch and their salsa is great and has a nice kick to it. Our meals were super good and very flavorful. We had the 'burrito' for dessert, fried cheesecake with fruity additions, it was sooooo good! The price was great, especially for the area.
Finally, the service was excellent. Our waiter was attentive and had great recommendations. The food and drinks arrived quickly. The manager even came by our table twice to make sure everything was great.
We will be back! -

Me gusta La Fiesta...
I had a really americanized quesadilla here and I'm still burping grilled chicken. Their mojitos were extra strong.
Rewind 1.5 years ago...
I stepped into Cafe Sevilla, the boy then and I were greeted by the instructor Valerie and her partner. Never done salsa before and totally sucked at it. My partner looked stiff and I was too much hips. The instructor said "You don't know the difference between standing still and walking." I had NO IDEA what we were supposed to do.
Fast forward to today...
I went to La Fiesta alone, Terrance (Valerie's dance partner) asked if I've done this before. Heeeelll ya! The lesson? Got it!
After the lesson I got spun, dipped, turned, tilted, gyrated... and I still have NO IDEA what's going on. -

My friends and I love going to La Fiesta on the weekends sometimes solely because of the music. Although the last time we went on Saturday, the regular Dj wasn't playing. The music was still good but we want the regular guy back since he gets the crowd going in a good direction. We always have fun here for the late night atmosphere on the weekends, but we hope the other dj is still there!

Went here about 5 years ago and really enjoyed my meal. Apparently things have changed since then.
The menu looks great, but the food was just "ok".
The service was really slow. The waiter was nice enough, but took about 20 minutes to get us the beers that we ordered, and maybe another 45 minutes for the food? At these prices, I expected a little better. -

This place used to rock. We would go every single weekend. The dj played an amazing latin mix (one of the few in the gaslamp) and the atmosphere was exotic and fun.
Imagine our surprise Friday night when we went in to go dancing, only to see that the stellar dj from before, had been replaced with some 17 yr old looking hipster, playing an awfully mixed selection of mainstream pop crap. What a disappointment! At 11pm we were two of only five people in the club. I give this place six months if they can't survive on the daytime food money they make. Why in the world they would get rid of such an awesome dj for the crap they have now, is beyond me.
The problem with this place has always been the promoters not the music (until now). You can go any weekend and see the older couple who promote, with their only average promotion girls standing directly outside the door or on the patio smoking cigarettes. Yeah, there you go...way to work it guys. Maybe replace them and bring back your sick @ss dj. I'll never step foot in here again.
Thankfully, the Tipsy Crow was just two blocks away and we were able to salvage the night. -

I am really surprised at these low ratings, I went to San Diego this past September and happened to eat at La Fiesta twice that week. Each time I got the Camarones Costa Azul........OMG, can I say totally awesome without sounding corny? You can't go wrong with shrimp wrapped in bacon AND stuffed with crab meat. I honestly am not a sauce person in the least, but that red pepper and cilantro sauce was soooooo good. I scrapped up every bit of sauce with my shrimp. Just the fact that the shrimp came with a side of guac is a plus in my book.
Since it was so good I had to go back before I headed back home so the second time I figured why go wrong with something else so I got the shrimp again, but I also ordered the Lobster Quesadillas....um can we say YUMMY!!! Every bite was heaven! I am so mad this is not a chain and that my chances of ever tasting the sweet pleasures of La Fiesta is if I ever go to San Diego again. BUMMER! I wonder if they will freeze the food and ship it to me. It was just THAT GOOD! -

"On the side": a directive that, when used in relation to food, refers to the diner's desire to have a food item - generally a sauce, dressing, or other condiment - placed beside (not on top of!) the main dish.
In general, this directive was missed by our friends at Fiesta. We placed an order for delivery online so my hard-working colleagues and I could enjoy dinner in the office. My salad (dressing on the side) was swimming in vinaigrette. Ditto for my coworker's salad. Churros were soggy with cherry and chocolate sauce. I made do (I'm a trooper), but I was rather underwhelmed.
In general, food was OK, but nothing all that memorable. Well, that's not true, people seem to remember that their food was cold. So, not good-memorable? Either way, I won't be ordering from Fiesta again.Listed in: It's Always Sunny in San Diego

Wanted Mexican food and some people watching so this was the place.
Our server greeted us promptyly and we gave him our drink orders and our food orders together.
Our beers showed up 15 minutes later -disappointing. Our food was delivered by the runner and we requested salsa to go with our meal.
We next flagged down another server and asked her for some salsa, and she turned around and told our server whom we hadn't seen since he took our order (30 min prior at this point).
We get close to the end of the meal and based on how the night has been I am thinking it will be another 30 minutes before we get our check.
I decide to flag the manager over. I explain that we haven't seen our server since he took our order. He says "I'm sorry" walks away and we never see him again. He clearly could care less.
The two stars was for the food and all other aspects of the evening get a 0. As there are so many options for food downtown and so many options for Mexican in San Diego this is one place that I will not be returning to. -

my gaslamp critique continues with my best meal ...
LA FIESTA served up food worthy of mayan royalty!
here's my three fave dishes that are sure to please:
UNO - Mar y Tierra (surf & turf)
filet mignon with a brown sauce and mushroms,
and a 1/2 lobster tail stuffed with crab meat too
DOS - Paella
moderately spicy with a blend of ingredients to
make your belly purr ... mussels, shrimp, chicken,
clam, tomato sauce, many veggies and spanish rice
TRES - Molcajete Cancun
i dunno the translation for this one ... it's one-of-a-kind.
it is served in a steaming bowl that looks like lava rock,
filled with lots of goodness from the sea in a tasty broth.
yum, yum, and yummy!!!
between 7 people the bills came to $550 (w/ drinks and tip).
oh yeah, the pitchers of margaritas and sampler platters
actually filled us up BEFORE the three entrees arrived!
so plan to take home leftovers for lunch tomorrow too. -
Review from Frank L.
Went to this place for dinner last Saturday. I felt like Mexican--actually, I felt like tequila. We perused the menu out front. Ouch. Like every restaurant in the Gaslamp District, the prices at La Fiesta are high.
We were seated at a booth inside. The chips were a little stale. The salsa wasn't very tasty. The margarita was damn good, though, and made up for a lot.
Girlfriend got tamales and I ordered the taco plate. The food looked great upon presentation, but it was just a tad bland for my taste. The service was okay, although it took quite a while for the check to come after we finished our meal.
Bottomline: Really good, STRONG margaritas. Food not really worth the high prices. -

Review from Daniel L.
My friend from North Dakota and I were walking around the Gaslamp District yesterday looking for a decent restaurant to stop by. We decided on La Fiesta based on several factors: 1.) We didn't want to go into a place that looked remotely expensive and touristy, 2.) We needed a vegan friendly restaurant that does not use any animal byproducts in their vegetarian dishes, 3.) We were operating under a tight schedule and didn't want to get too far away from convention center. La Fiesta happens to fit all the criteria and we perceived the presence of a nice crowd as a sign that the food was at least alright.
For the location, La Fiesta turned out to be a nice find. I thought the salsa and fresh guacamole were thick and delectable. My carnita burrito came with a modest side of refried black beans and rice, and the meat was soft, very tender, nicely seasoned and braised. I thought the dish tasted even better once I added some salsa and guacamole to the mix, and my friend who has an ultra sensitive palate ended up liking his vegetarian burrito that came with a colorful blend of grilled vegetables at the center. Portions were modest and not overwhelming.
It was after all still the Gaslamp District so our two lunch specials came out costing more than normal, but we enjoyed the chance to sit at their front patio and had a good hour of uninterrupted conversation. Service was prompt and attentive, but it was a slight disappointment to find dirty spots on my cloth napkin and had to get it changed.Listed in: Patio & Outdoor Dining, Beyond Rice & Beans: Latino &…

After gorging on greasy happy hour food, we felt like it would be good idea to get some "healthy" food back into our system a la, A Salad...
Sorry La Fiesta... Lettuce, tortilla chips, olive oil and a tomato does not a Caesar Salad make.
Neither was the hour wait it took to get it to me.

Review from Roseann M.

I came here on Tuesday with a group of 8, all conference attendees from out of town. We had a 7:30pm reservation. The restaurant was very busy. We finally sat down at 8:00pm.
Our waiter was a sweet young Brazilian man named Felipe, who did a good job with us. Because we were all on expense accounts, everyone had a separate check. That makes for a ton of extra work. There was an error on my check, but when I called it to Felipe's attention, he got it corrected right away.
Like I said, the place was jammed when we got there, and we had to wait for our table. It looked as if there was a couple, diners, who were not leaving as quickly as the restaurant had planned/hoped, so that appeared to be the reason why our table was not ready on time. As far as I know, we never got a reason for the delay, but that's what some of us surmised the reason way.
I ordered a standard Margarita, and it was good. Not too strong, not weak, just fine for a busy restaurant in a touristy area (Gaslamp District). If I were in San Diego, I would certainly be willing to go there for another margarita.
Because of the delay, we didn't get our dinners until about 9:10pm. The crowd in the restaurant was thinning out by then, but the dinners were not coming together. However, I guess I appreciate that the food was delivered when it was hot and ready, instead of sitting under a heat lamp and making the cheese icky.
As far as I could see, everybody got what they ordered, all the orders were correct. I am a vegetarian, so I went with enchiladas suizas in green sauce. The item on the menu came with chicken; I asked them to hold the chicken, and they did. I liked my meal just fine. It wasn't anything Earth shaking, and it was a pretty late dinner for me, so I sucked it down.
Bottom line; this is an okay restaurant in an area that's totally designed to appeal to the tourist trade. Of all the Mexican restaurants I've ever been to, this certainly isn't the best, and it certainly was okay. If I was in San Diego with someone who said, oh we have to go to La Fiesta, I would go willingly. -

Not thrilled...my husband and I went for lunch yesterday after a fun day at the Little Itlay Festa and the 5th Ave car show. We felt like Mexican food and decided to try something new. Big mistake..overpriced for mediocre (that's being kind) food.
You know you are in for a bad experience when the chips aren't crispy. I strongly recommend that you avoid La Fiesta. -

Came here as part of a "Dining Experience" where we stopped at several restaurants in the Gaslamp.
Only had the appetizers and drinks...
Part of a company event, I have no idea the costs of the food.
The guacamole was fantastic, the mexican pizza was good, and this one dish (I forgot what it was called, but it consisted of a variety of seafood) was great.
The one interesting thing? They had this opera singer that came up to the tables as we were eating... but he sang (in Italian) one of the pieces from La Traviata!?!?! An Italian opera singer over guac, chips, and patron shots? Hmmm.... -

We came upon this place last night (9/16/2009) while searching for a place to not pay cover or wait on the Holiday weekend.
There was a cardboard cutout that said something like, "Club 448." I'm not sure if the restaurant is trying to bring in some money with the Thurs/Fri/Sat night scene.
It looked like there were a lot of younger people (21-35) and there was hip hop music, cool lights and it didn't look overly crowded.
On the north end of the place there was Kirin, Blue Moon, Longboard and two other beers on tap. We got our beers and hit the dance area on the south end of La Fiesta.
The music was good, ladies and guys were dancing. There was an entertaining light show with odd laser dots everywhere. At times it was annoying and the lights creating an odd effect: at various times it felt like someone "popped up" right next to me. That's not a good feeling at a bar.
I noticed there's a second bar on near the dance floor with Widmer Hefewisen, Dos Equis (XX), and more on tap.
Well, I had left my tab open and went back to the same bar to get two more beers for me and my friend. I waited 10-12 mintutes (an eternity by my standards) and, finally, I had become so annoyed, I told the bartender that I wanted to close out my tab.
The male bartender has longer dirty blond hair and a beard (looks like Dennis Quaid but with the facial hair.) He served two more customers a round of shots before closing me out (really?! Just close me out, bro).
I think this place can be a less crowded and cheaper alternative to Whiskey Girl and Henry's but that poor service really burned my night. I'm not too stubborn to return with my guy friends and work some female traffic.
Also, I'm not sure if this is a regular thing or just somethign La Fiesta started to bring in cash from the holiday weekend.

I received a gift certificate for my choice of restaurants so we hit up La Fiesta yesterday. Highly impressed! It was happy hour (3-6 daily) so I ordered the margarita. And I was feeling good after about 1.5 of these! We downed the complimentary chips and salsa (yum!) and got our food quickly. I decided to order an array of items from the happy hour menu: rolled tacos, mini nachos and 2 carne asada tacos. All were delicious, hot and I was so full I couldn't finish. The 3 others loved their food as well.
Ended the meal with fried ice cream (so good) and flan!
Not the cheapest Mexican place in town, but great for happy hour! 3 entrees, my mish mash of an entree, 7 drinks and 2 desserts: $113! -

1. Service was terrible. Took forever to get anything, told us our chips would be right out and never came so we had to ask for them. Hostess had the memory of a gold fish and forgot to bring silverware 2 seconds after asking for it. The server tried taking our food before we were even near done eating.
2. Food was meh. Decent but bland and they forgot ingredients of my tostada somehow.. how do you forget avocado on a mexican dish?
3. Bathroom was a mess and not stocked. All of the seat covers and toilet paper was out.
4. Homeless man came and was pestering everyone eating on the patio and they did not do anything to fix the situation, despite seeing it happening. -

Meh. Its what I expect from a touristy restaurant - decent ambiance, mediocre food and a large bill. Whatever, at least I wasn't the one paying for the pitchers of Patron margaritas.
I would've loved to have had the chance to eat good Mexican food while in San Diego but that's just going to have to wait until next time because I'm already leaving. -

We're so close to Mexico yet this "Mexican" food is so far from being "authentic." I know it's hard for me to talk about authentic Mexican food because I'm neither from Mexico or am I Mexican. But living in California does offer me the joy of tasting Mexican food over and over again.
So after a long day at the beach and shopping, we decided to stop in Downtown for some food. We stopped at this place because my boyfriend saw something mouthwatering. I ended up getting the sizzling shrimp fijtias and he got the... err... I forget. Anyway... my place was NOT sizzling and my shrimps... well I could have made it taste more "Mexican." My pina colada was good though AND the waiter didn't charge me for it either that or he forgot.
The service... well... the waiter didn't give a damn about us but still... we left a 15% tip (is that the norm now?).
Personal fave: pina colada -

I think this is a good choice for Happy Hour, but probably not worth it for a full meal. Happy Hour starts at 11am for drinks and the food goes on special at 3pm. I believe the HH extends to 6pm.
$3 drinks on HH, including margaritas - which were good. There was a good selection of appetizers on special. I had the fish ceviche, which was really good, a nice size portion and pretty much my "dinner". Have also had the chicken tostado that was fair. Free chips and salsa - which were decent.
The location is great and good for a stop in on the way to a Padre game. However, the down side was the service, slow, slow and it didn't seem that busy. It took forever for our few apps to come out of the kicthen, plus despite asking for the check 2x - it never came and we had to leave so had to calculate the check total, tax and tip and left it on the table. Have NEVER done that before.
Would I come back? Probably but I probably won't be the first place I would recommend. -

Didn't stay long friends encountered rather grabby gentleman we exited rather quickly. We went pretty late so they were probably intoxicated but upon notifying someone they didn't do much. Easier just to leave. We wanted to try it out.
