This is a prime location for anyone who needs a break during their shopping adventures, nice walks, heading to the movies, or waiting at the bus stop.
I ordered a small latte with soy - no additional cost as a latte with regular milk (thumbs up)!... The soy wasn't too strong with a nice hint of espresso, all for a good price. Their cakes looked delicious, sandwiches looked fresh and the danishes and pastries had full of fruit.
Wish I was more hungry because I could have ordered one of everything with my sweet tooth! Guess I'll have to return :)Listed in: World away from Starbucks..

Vancouver is a city of few bakeries. Or few good ones, at least.
Before buying a full cake, I bought a slice for sample. It turns out the sliced cakes and the full cakes are not the same. The Korean lady at the counter only mentioned the Tiramisu was going to be different; however I picked the Chocolate Hazelnut cake. The sliced Chocolate Hazelnut was delightful, and so I placed an order for it for my mother's birthday. The full cake was not nearly as delightful as the sliced one. We were very disappointed.
Most of my disappointment, really, stems from the fact that the shop lady couldn't tell me anything about the cakes. Said she didn't like cakes. Well, that's swell. Now I have a person who is supposed to help me but knows nothing about her products. And she made very unnecessary comments about my choice of cake shape. Very rude, unfortunately.
Finally, pricey for the quality and portion. All in all, worth ONE try. That's all. -

It was close to the hotel and the Blenz, so we gave it a try. Friendly cashier, good looking variety of pastries. It ended there.
I tend to like my pastries not overly sweet but I did not enjoy the fruit danish at all. There was no flavor other than the tartness of the fruits. The creamy center had absolutely no sweetness to it. Gross.
The croissant was not buttery enough. And what's worse, it was on the chewy side. Yuck. -

Looks really cute but they couldn't even heat up my cheese croissant since they had no heating device on premise. Sorta odd if you ask me, considering they are connected to the hotel and are supposed to cater to tourists. The croissant was light and flaky, however, even if the cheddar was hard. I wouldn't order it again, and I probably would not return unless I was desperate to enjoy their patio.
Nice seating area on one of our rare hot days when you can enjoy the sun, especially when the Starbucks across the street was freezing.
They also offer free wireless which is appreciated, and is often tough to find at places other than SB, I have found.
More like 2.5 stars. I would like to take off an extra for being located next to that famous you-know-what that I refuse to try, but hey, it's not their fault. :) -

Stopped by here randomly as I was on my way to check out Japadog.
A really small bakery located on a pretty busy street. I can't resist the smell of bread but by the time I went, many of the pastry and bread were already gone, so I went for an almond croissant instead.
The croissant itself is pretty good, with lots of sliced almonds on the top. Good almond paste in the middle but the croissant wasn't as buttery. Definitely better than your typical market bakery. Kinda pricey though.
Oh and if you want to buy V8 juices here, you MUST buy in it quantities of 2. Weird but the cashier said that's how it's done. Yes random I know but hey, some people love their V8 juices.
If I lived around the area or work around there, definitely not a bad place to stop by for a cup of coffee or a quick breakfast rather than your typical super-chain cafes.Listed in: a rainy weekend in vancouver

Cute little spot which is run by the Sutton Place Hotel, but easily accessible to random streetwalkers (no, not that kind) waiting for the bus that never comes.
The pastries are just ok though. I much prefer Patisserie Bordeaux (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) for my croissant aux amandes and pain au chocolat.
If you are already here, it is easy to just hop on the bus (if it does finally arrive) and go to Patisserie Bordeaux instead. Go for it!Listed in: Dentists' Dreams in Vancouver, Vancouver European Food

The space is really tight, not exactly somewhere I would make a destination, and I didn't really get the feeling of a French cafe, but with the dueling Starbucks my only other proximal choice this is a decent pit stop.
A hop and barely a skip away from Robson La Boulangerie boasts sweet staff who let me know that they also had muffins and chocolate croissants behind the counter. The croissant was decent, just better than a grocery store variety. I felt a little jipped that it was $2, but for just off Robson, I guess it's appropriate. With it being the end of the day, it's easily forgiveable, but on the other hand, the pastry lacked the flaky buttery texture which had prompted me to stop in in the first place. Next time, I'll sit for a spell and perhaps try to conjure up Parisian streets in my imagination while I sip on an espresso and munch on a pastry. -

Amongst the many, many Starbucks in Vancouver, I wanted to get a coffee from a local shop rather than a giant chain. I popped into La Boulangerie for a coffee post-Japa Dog (nothing like hot dogs and...coffee?).
Turns out that La Boulangerie is owned/operated by the Sutton Hotel next door. Not a mom and pop shop, but it is a cute, tiny little store that can't fit more than 4 people or so. They have a good selection of pastries (cinnamon buns and things like that) and sandwiches.
Even though the actual store is small, there are ~5 small tables out front which make it a nice place to chill and take a break from shopping on Robson. -

I had completely forgot about this place until I read Marc D's review...I am so happy to be reminded and am SO going there this weekend...
I went to Paris a few years back...and after I got home I was still on a pain au chocolat and cafe aux lait kick..conveniently La Boulangerie was on my daily route to work! I would stop in every morning and have the same thing...the staff would actually have my order ready by the time it was my turn in line..I was just that predictable apparently..
I never did stray from my usual order so I can say what the rest of the eats are like..and while the pain au chocolat was nothing close to the ones in Paris..they did satisfy my craving..... -

I nearly almost forgot about this wee little cafe attached to the glorious Sutton Place Hotel, but luckily, the memories of wonderful coffee and tasty sandwiches brought me back.
While having the pleasure of staying at the Sutton Place Hotel when I first arrived in Vancouver, La Boulangerie became my early-morning (who am I kidding...mid-afternoon) coffee stop. The friendly staff were always at the ready with my medium black coffee and although I kindly turned them down, an offering of delectable looking French pastries as well.
La Boulangerie may be lacking space, but they make up for it by serving delicious coffee and fantastic baked goods and sandwiches with a smile. There are also a few tables out front of the shop, should your Robson Street shopping-weary feet need a rest! -

I tried three things there: chocolate croissant, cinnamon bun and chocolate chip cookie. The croissant dough wasn't very tasty and was on the dry side, but the chocolate was dark and delicious. I've had better cinnamon buns, but it wasn't bad. The chocolate chip cookie was really soft and a bit underbaked in my opinion, but that's the way I like my cookies, so that was probably my favorite pastry.
The prices are fairly cheap so I didn't expect too much. I probably wouldn't go again, but I didn't think it was a bad choice either. -

Tight space and not really French at all, but has nice desserts and tasty drinks. A convenient place to stop by on your way to something else. The products are a bit pricey, but good for what you pay for.

VERY TINY coffee shop just off Robson Street. My boyfriend had just treated himself to a Japa Dog and we were trying to spend our last Canadian coin before heading back to the ol US and A. We walked past La Boulangerie and decided to stop in. He ordered a hot chocolate and we shared a little dessert treat. I wasn't paying attention to prices since we were literally trying to use up money. The hot chocolate was delicious, really rich and yummy. The fruity mousse thing topped with chocolate and pistachios was pretty good. There were a few sandwiches in the case and other pastries covered in saran wrap. Another customer came in after us (which put the place almost at capacity) and inquired as to the freshness of the pastries. The woman at the counter told her everything was baked fresh daily and that they were plastic wrapped cause they were closing soon. Next time I'm in Vancouver this might be worth another try since it's centrally located and I try to avoid chain coffee shops as much as possible. -

I don't have much to say about this place... we stopped for a quick pastry on the way out for the day and it was quite the delicious, cheap pastry. If you're in the mood for a little french pastry, this is a good place to come.

Since Starbucks' viselike grip on Robson Street is unlikely to loosen any time soon, it's comforting to know that Vancouverites still have some options. Located a mere half a block away from the main Robson ramble is La Boulangerie. La Boulangerie is a tiny little café (no more than four very slim people can fit there at any given time) that sells coffee, tea, sandwiches and other standard French pastry fare. Despite it selling out frequently and early, the elusive pain au chocolat is definitely my favourite.
