If you can find it, and if you're lucky enough to get a table, you'll be rewarded for your patience with a pretty darned good shot at bringing the Mexican experience to Winnipeg. But in my opinion, we're not quite there yet.

A quick survey of the menu will welcome you with comforting classics like enchiladas, tacos, quesadilla. But along the way there are departures from the oh so beaten path.

Flautas, a safe detour, feature deliciously crisp tortillas stuffed with mildly seasoned chicken.

Los bravos can take a defiant step into the all but unknown with civiche. Although traditionally made with lime juice and chilis, this dish is a refreshing and lively combination of tomato, onions, cilantro, shrimp, scallops and hot sauce.

Dipping decidedly south you'll discover enchiladas Molé, two corn tortillas filled with chicken, smothered in a savoury, and slightly bitter chocolate spice sauce, and garnished with crema and queso fresco. While I grant you there are dozens, if not hundreds, of variations of the infamous Molé, this one, at least for me, was forgettable.

Taco de pollo is straight up shredded chicken, but the carne asada, and quesocarne come with grilled steak, onions and additionally cheese in the latter instance. Theyr'e all tasty, but of all the tacos, the shining star is arguably the alambre - a build your own pile of steak and bacon smothered in cheese and served with three fresh soft tortillas.

Most dishes come with Mexican rice, and the best refried beans you'll find. Occasionally salsa fresco or guacamole bring a little extra flavor to the party and although fresh, none pack a great deal of flavor which seems the overarching theme of the experience.

But I'm repeatedly left asking, where is the puckery zing of lime, the perfume of fresh cilantro, the zesty heat of jalapenos, the smoky smoulder of the chipotles. Although incorporated into many of the dishes, these ingredients are inexplicably muted.

With an all Mexican staff, and a menu allegedly emerging from family recipes, it can only be a conscious decision to take it easy on a relatively new to Mexican market.

But bring it on, la Bamba. I want more and I think my fellow Winnipeggers are a tough and adventuresome enough breed to take it.

What can I say fresh good items prepared fresh and served to you by a good server, oh and it helps that Wednesday is 2 for 1 Mexican beer nite. Talked with one of the owners/cooks, their plan seems to be to slowly introduce more items to the menu over time that are less familiar to Winnipegers. The neatest thing they said was they do not have fish on the menu as they do not what to use any thing that was previously frozen. The price seems a little higher but they make up for it in the food being served, we will be back to try more.

Who knew this SK chain would be the ones to bring Mexican cuisine to our fair city?

This place has taken over the old Mise location in the Village, which has a small parking lot. The interior has been updated with fresh bright colors and it feels like there's more light in the place. There's Mexican flags everywhere and 3 plasma TVs showing, what else, World Cup 2010! There's one large main dining room and a smaller side dining room. Not sure why they have such a large waiting area when they could really add more tables. We were there on the weekend and it was packed, and with lots of people waiting too.

We were served complimentary fresh made tortillas but no salsa. I'll chalk it up to the server being overwhelmed with the hungry crowd and forgetting the salsa. Nonetheless the tortillas were delicious - a good tasty basket full of goodness.

I loved my lime margarita, at $6.99, is a tad higher than other places but it was strong and delicious (2 oz, 100% agave tequilla)!! A great starter (even though it's listed as an entree) is the "la bamba ceviche." At $14.99, it's a pricey starter since most of the entrees are at the same price but there's enough shrimp to share between three people. It's only available from Fri-Sun. The menu listed that there were shrimp, scallops, tomato, onion, cilantro, tomato sauce and hot sauce but there were no scallops at all, just lots of shrimp. Nonetheless, it was a delicious tangy dish!

The "tacos de carne asada" ($16.99) was recommended by the server. It comes with three soft corn tortillas with grilled steak and onions and topped with cilantro. All of the entrees seem to come with rice, beans, guacamole and salsa.  The steak was tender but I was craving for a bit more flavour, which I thought the tacos de pollo (chicken) had more of. I liked how the tortillas held up and didn't break apart. The guacamole was very creamy and yummy! The refried beans were sprinkled with some fresco cheese - a creamy and well seasoned side, and I'm not even a fan of beans! Surprisingly, the rice wasn't my fav even though I love rice. The salsa was freshly made, a nice change from the other two so-called Mexican restaurants (DP and C&M) but I wish they had more choices like mild, med and hot. There was no heat at all so we asked for some hot sauce, even then the hot sauce was pretty weak. I'd love it if they can add some jalapenos into the salsa!

The portions are quite large there so you'll leave full. The entrees range from $14.99 to $17.99 - it is a few dollars more than other Mexican places but since it's all fresh ingredients, made from scratch and never frozen, I think the price is appropriate.

Our food came really quickly despite a full house and our server was very nice. There were some minor misses but it's still a relatively new place so I'm sure they'll work those out. They also serve a weekend brunch from noon-3 pm - can't wait to try their huevos rancheros!
