All hamburgers should be made out of foie gras.

All resto-bars should be full of gorgeous people.

Thankfully L'Assommoir has checked off both of these boxes.

Nice decor, tasty savoury small plates, extensive bar, and yet something seems to be missing for me. On Bernard the prices seem a little off for the neighborhood. They are clearly proud of what they do at L'Assommoir on Bernard to the point of perhaps being a little out of touch with the reality on the block. Put it this way - I live nearby and when choosing watering holes L'Assommoir rarely comes up. But in Old Montreal the whole vibe makes more sense, and no doubt, you can get a stiff drink here any day of the week.

Me and some good friends were looking for a place to get a drink and enjoy a nice girl's night out. We certainly weren't deceived with l'Assommoir, on Bernard Street.

Frist off, the bartenders give you a great customer service and are extremely charming. :-) Brownie points for this! (Which could very well explain why this bar has so many pretty women in it. ;-) )

But let's talk about the drinks! Like someone said in an earlier review, they have over 300 different kind of drinks to choose. I happen to be the kind of lady that enjoy a good beer, and they had a few. But they really do specialize in drinks and liquors. I

We had to choose something to eat with our drinks, so we chose the "Gueuleton" which included some plantain chips, houmous, olives... it was good with my beer! But my friends, who ordered different kind of drinks, didn't enjoy the "mix" as much.

The food itself can be pricey. And we already had eaten, so this is why we chose the"gueuleton". But I would be curious to try their Tartare, nex time.

There also was a D.J. in the place, which was nice. The music was a little loud but you get used to it after a drink or two. :-p

We probably stayed about two hours. And we're defenetely thinking of going back for a longer night.

Seriously, what do people in Montreal do to their women? They are gorgeous!!

Stumbled here for some drinks after a nice dinner at Bonaparte. It was a Wednesday night and the place had a good amount of people! At first, our large group was seated in the back at the round table. Not much going on back here. DJ was playing what sounded like French house music. Anything house related is good for me!

Ordered a Grey Goose and Tonic which really just tasted like tonic. My boss orderd a Jack and coke which tasted like diet coke. After that, we all just went for straight whiskey to make sure nothing was watered down.

Later a few of us moved to a high top table by the bar and really, my eyeballs literally popped out of my sockets and jaws dropped on the ground! Left, right, up, down and all around just beautiful women. One girl looked like a petite Kim Kardashian.

Things went downhill after we all decided to have some Absinthe. I hate black licorice but I couldn't be the one that said no. By far, the worst tasting drink I have ever tasted in my life but I will admit, a good and clean buzz.

Thanks to L'Assommoir.... Montréal, I am coming back for you when the weather is better!

Good food, good drinks, live jazz band, good ambience. What spoiled it for us was a waitress called Sylvie. Rude, arrogant, had an I-give-a-damn attitude. Such people shouldn't be in the service industry, they ruin a perfectly nice place by their attitude.

The reviews are ranging from "Doesn't deserve to be called a restaurant" to "The best Sangria of my whole life". One thing is certain, you'll probably find there the most exhaustive drink menu of your whole life. I honestly think that their menu is about 20 pages. Original drinks, tasty and very diverse. It's worth to go even for this very only reason. For example, their pink pepper and raspberry martini is superb.

On Thursday, the ladies receive two free drinks with any food. Another reason to check it out.

Ok, I'll be honest. Food is crap. You should not be coming here for food, ever... why? BECAUSE IT IS THE BEST BAR IN TOWN.

Just count how many drinks they have on the menu! 100? 200? no, 300+

Ask them for specials and you will see your drink flying, burning, exploding, and doing all other weird things before getting in front of you. And its delicious, no matter what you order.

Ask if Mathieu (bartender) is working. Tell him you read Oleg's review. You will get special treatment.

Happened upon L'assoimmoir by accident one rainy spring weekend, after the brazilian place across the street informed us they weren't yet open, despite a party of three drinking there. Your loss, brazilian restaurant.
L'assommoir is an upscale bar eatery in the Mile End. Its name either comes from a Zola novel (a heartwarming tale about alcoholism) or  the French term for gin joint. Either way, the cocktails in this establishment are the stars here, as much as the service, with food not being far behind.
Start with the drinks: I've never been much on cocktails, mostly because they usually are fruity and sugary and have stupid names like "Flying Squirrel," and "Sex-o-Plenty." Luckily this is not such an establishment. I had a "Cloud" which had gin and jasmine tea and something kiwi that was a deep army green and demanded a second. My date had something equally as tasty, so much so, I had cocktail envy.
The food was mainly ceviche and fish based, although there were bigger platters and samplers that ran the gamut between roasted potatoes and meat.  The spicy tuna and salmon terrine was good, the mojito scallop ceviche ten times better. PS: I will give the next Montrealer a Toonie if they can point me in the direction of one spicy dish up here that really is spicy. This terrine was good if  not over sesame oiled, but no where near spicy.
Service: Fantastic. Our server was a bald, handsomely attired man with gold bracelet, gravel laugh   who clearly enjoys working there, and makes you enjoy being there without even trying. He told us  the place gets jumping hardcore in the evenings and I don't doubt him.
But for a quiet romantic nosh avec serious cocktails, the late afternoon cant be beat.
Bonus for intellectuals and comic book nerds: the excellent graphic novel/independent bookstore Drawn and Quarterly is half a block west on the other side of the street. Perfect for pre-game head games.
