I've visited Kushibar several times since I've lived in Seattle and have yet to review!  For three years I was blessed with living only one block away and now that I have moved to West Seattle, I still come visit!

The ambiance here is fantastic.  The *heated* outdoor patio is beautiful and the restaurant is always busy and lively.  Despite the great business, service is always attentive and friendly.

The menu has a huge variety of options but I always end up ordering a noodle dish whether it is Ramen or the Yaki udon.  So far everything I have tried is delish!!!  I have a feeling a lot of reviews are people expecting sushi at a Japanese restaurant, but Japanese street food is sooo much better than fish on vinegar rice (and satisfying!).

    Definitely recommended.

My gf and I stopped by here to get a bite before we headed to a party in Belltown. It was my first time here and I was surprised that they don't have sushi for a japanese restaurant. Their specialty is teppanyaki.

We ordered 3 menu items which consisted of sashimi, Japanese style hot chicken wings and jalapeño spiced prawns. The prawns were a bit spicy hot  with a small side salad included. I think my fave is still Japponessa for some good old HH food and drink.

The service was good as they checked up on us quite a few times and refill our water, but my gf said that their seating on the big long wood bench was hard to sit on for a long time.

Whenever I'm craving ramen - I think of kushibar.  While I've definitely have had better japanese and ramen - I just find this place very consistent and the food is always solid.

Plus, who doesn't love the curry popcorn they give.  I've had mixed service here - sometimes it can be really nice and other times it can be quite slow but not a big deal cause it's a pretty cool place to hang out at.

Ever since I moved from Oregon I've been looking for good Ramen. Well, I found it here!! It is the only thing I've had that compares to the Ramen house I used to frequent. This will most definitely do the trick.

I was craving sushi like no other after a show one night and I had my heart set on Wasabi Bistro. Imagine my disappointment when the wait for a table for three was an hour and a half. I didn't want to wait because I was starving so my friend suggested Kushibar. I had known of its existence but never took the time to venture in.

Kushibar is simply decorated with lots of wood furnishings and an outdoor seating area which we choose to sit in. I did like the fact we could be "outside" in the middle of winter.

The menus were quirky as they were like comic books. Imagine my surprise when I did not see spider rolls, which I was craving like a mofo, on the menu. Argh! I was hoping to see two pages filled with sushi options but my assumption was way off. Since sushi was entirely out of the picture my options were noodles, ramen, fried things, and much more. The menu wasn't puny at all. I decided to go with the pork. kimchee, and salmon noodles. One friend went with a variety of skewers and another got the gyoza.

My kimchee noodles came piping hot in a big black hot. When I mean piping hot I mean like first degree burn hot. I had to wait at least twenty minutes for it to cool down and even then it was still a hazard. My friend had to point out there were two small bowls and spoons to shovel the soup in to. Oh, that will probably help it to get to an eatable temperature. When it did I was quite satisfied. The noodles tasted homemade, the salmon was a great representation of salmon, the kimchee was nice and spicy, and the broth was as well.

Even though all I wanted was sushi and Kushibar didn't have what I wanted on the menu, the noodles were a good alternative. I left with full soup belly and was satisfied.

I admit my bar for japanese food is high and this one just sucks.  Do Not Recommend at all.

I ordered Shoyu Raemen and takoyaki.  Both of them tasted ok just better than being awful.  The frozen ones from Uwajimaya are honestly better.

Save yourself $$ and hassle to find parking in Belltown.

Honestly, my wife and I love this place. It's one of the only restaurants in Seattle that we routinely come back to.

Cool atmosphere, and really great food. The curry-something popcorn that they bring out when you sit down is pretty delicious, and we almost always order the same things off the menu. Fried tofu for the appetizer, and the spicy nabeyaki udon soup and the pork street-style fried rice for dinner.

The service is decent, but that's not why we come here. It's just dependably good food.

    All I know is:

THE CURRY POPCORN IS THE BOMB
The Octopus ball thingys (tako yaki) , were dam good, and the kimchi fried rice is delicious, so are the Cucumber Daquiris.

You can go wrong with the skewers (kushi yaki) I haven't had one I didn't like.
Great place for parties on the weekends, Fever is usually spinning and always plays CUTS.

The menu looked so cheap that we'd ordered a little bit of everything because it was per skewer/serving. It was ok. Our bill came to over $100 for 3 ppl. This street food wasn't so cheap after all.

Their yakisoba was something that stood out the most.

Will not be back, but glad that we did tried.

My friends and I stumbled across this place while strolling downtown Seattle during our last night of our weekend getaway..

When you first walk in its a bar.. and the back of the place is the dining portion.. we never got to eat anything, just drinks... so i cant comment on that.. i can point out that they lay out popcorn sprinkled with curry powder at the bar and on the tables.. its amazing.. we kept asking for refills because the curry powder popcorn was so good..

the drinks are well made.. strong.. may be a bit on the pricy side.. but worth it if you consider the volume and alcohol content they include in their mixes.. it is a bit crowded because the layout is a narrow rectangle shape.. but once you get up to the bar you will be served well and greeted with the delicious popcorn..

If i'm back in seattle again I'd like to stop by here and try their food as well.. it seemed to be your general japanese foods.. ramen.. things of that nature.

    BAR REVIEW: 3.5 stars

Would have been a 4- but the bathroom was ridiculous. There's no way a big place like this only has one tiny bathroom.

I really enjoyed myself at this spot. Great indoor and outdoor seating. The patio area is cool if you want to escape the noisy sweaty bar line. I don't know if i went on "asian" night, but there were a lot of asian-americans there that night. All in their 20's. Young crowd, decent atmosphere. Awesome priced drinks, but I'm from LA so what the hell do I know about Seattle prices.

Had an amazing time there, great place to drink for big groups (with small bladders)!

I can't believe I haven't written a review for this place yet... I've definitely been here several times to eat and drink too. Note that this place becomes a bar after hours on the weekends.

I really like how they have the outdoor/indoor seating because it has an authentic feel to it. They have heaters in the outdoor/indoor seating too so don't worry.

They don't serve sushi here so if you want sushi, don't come here, go next door to Wasabi Bistro. They serve small plates kind of like Japanese tapas. The skewers are yummy and so are the udon and yakisoba. I love how they serve meals with curry flavored popcorn too! Those are super addicting, who would've thought?

Service is pretty decent but this place can get so crowded and hot/sweaty on Fri/Sat nights depending on who's having their party here that night. It's a mostly Asian (Korean) crowd too.

The atmosphere in here is cool, unfortunately so is the temperature - I was freezing! Ordered the shrimp yaki soba which I thought would be a soup but was instead big fat yummy noodles in sauce.  Delish!  The ramen came in a HUGE bowl and the consensus was that it was also quite tasty.  I do like the concept of all the little grilled skewers.  The Honey I'm Home cocktail was also a delightful surprise.  I'd not thought of combining ginger and tequila before, and it really worked well.  The prices seemed a little high but I think that's just Belltown.

Kushi - cushy (except for the bench seating) and a nice atmosphere

I like it here and find myself drifting back for Japanese street food late at night on the weekends. Not the most amazing Japanese food I've ever had but there's something homey to it. I always seem to run into friends here no matter the day or time. I did have an argument with one waitress how I wanted sushi and she kept telling me curtly over and over they don't have it but thus I found sashimi and tuna hand roll. Ha! I know my food.

I really liked this place. We ordered from the happy hour menu.
The food tasted really good.  I especially liked the ginger on the vegetable udon.  It made the other spices come alive in the food.

Even though they seasoned the udon lightly it had balanced taste. Normally, when I go out and eat, I find myself eating a snack after.  This time, I didn't have to since they served a good portion.  It filled me up.

The atmosphere at Kushibar felt inviting and warm. The wooden interiors gave the place a zen-like feel.  I felt comfortable and relaxed.

No hurries or worries, I slowly ate and savored my food.

    Totally recommend it!

This is such an interesting place...and I don't mean interesting in a bad way!

The inside is cool - it's made out of planks of wood and the restaurant is very long and narrow. They have a really cool outdoor patio that is covered that looks like it'd be fun on a summer day.

I had always wanted to try this place but was skeptical because of the reviews. However, I had a great experience here. I think that I ordered well and that there are certainly items that should not be ordered but here's what I liked and disliked:

    Liked:
    - Friendly service
    - Atmosphere
    - The miso ramen with the ultra fresh ingredients, incredible egg noodles, and the perfectly seasoned broth

    Disliked:
    - Long, long tables and not that many of them
    - The one piece of shrimp for $3.50
    - Lychee lemonade (WAY too strong and syrupy, very concentrated)
    - The small amount of meat in the ramen
    - The really salty broth of the sesame pork/chicken ramen

So I loved this place because I ordered well. My husband, not so much, although he still enjoyed his meal. He just didn't drink much of the broth. I didn't drink much of the lemonade. He LOVED the shrimp but wished there was more as I did with the meat in the ramen.

Despite all of this, I really liked my soup. Definitely one of my favorite places for ramen in the city (maybe because it's the only one that I've been to...?) :)

Our waitress was a little on the slow side. She went back and forth between the patio (where my two girlfriends and I sat) and inside the restaurant about 8 times before she actually got our orders in. It was really odd that she didn't know how to group and prioritize tasks. Snippet of our interactions:

    J: "Can I have a Hoegaarden?"
Waitress: "Sure" --walks away and comes back--
R: "Do you make Shirley Temples?"
Waitress: "Umm let me go ask." --walks away and comes back--
Me: "Can I have a taste of the house white wine?"
Waitress: "Umm let me go ask." --walks away and comes back--
Me: "Do you want to take our food orders first?"
Waitress: "Umm just a second."--walks away and comes back--

Seriously... it was weird. She could have saved herself 10 minutes if she got all of our food orders in and got all of our questions before going into the restaurant.

Anyhow--the food was okay. Nothing too special. The ramen was a good size, but was too salty and oily. The katsu don and unagi don were both served in HUGE bowls--90% rice, 10% topping.

    Over it.

i came here for a sake tasting and a friend told me to try the spicy nabeyaki udon. I had just eaten and was not hungry at all but i was curious, i havent had good udon since Hawaii. The clay pot came out sizzling and bubbling. IT WAS SOOOOO GOOD!....OMG i burned my tongue because i couldnt hold myself back. at the end i finished the entire bowl although i was not hungry. Only down side about it is the fillers weren't that great. Such as the chicken pieces were bland and dry, and the udon noodles weren't handmade. Oh well, the soup made up for it. SPICY, HOT, hint of tartness from the kimchi.

    Damn good job Kushibar

I really like this place.  I have been here quite a few times, and I have always enjoyed my meal and the atmosphere.  Kushibar is owned by the same people as Umi, so you can definitely see the same cocktails on both menus.  However, Kushibar focuses on Japanese street food, instead of traditional sushi, so the two restaurants have very different focus.

They start out with popcorn at the table, which is lightly seasoned with curry.  Interesting and definitely addicting.  I love their nabeyaki udon.  The udon noodles are always cooked perfectly and the broth, with the tempura shrimp in it, is delicious.  I also love their pork yaki-udon, but I would recommend asking for no ginger on top (but that is mainly due to me disliking pickled ginger).  I also love their gyozas, which are different than most places because they are thin and pan seared, instead of being big, dumpling-like, and deep fried.  They are good though.  Love their croquettes, along with the varies types of skewers they have.  My favorite skewers would have to be the fish cake, eel, oyster mushrooms, to name a few.  I also love their ramen bowls but they are HUGE.  I would recommend two people sharing a ramen and getting a couple of little dishes to share.

I don't think that I have ever gotten anything that I didn't like off their menu, and there is definitely more things that I want to try that I haven't yet.

Sigh. I really, really, REALLY wanted to like this place.

The concept seems so cool, "Japanese street food" in a cute little spot in belltown. I was excited to try it (despite the three star rating on Yelp) for no other reason than the okonomiyaki.  I should have listened to Yelp.

So, we have this family friend -- another sister to me, really -- who introduced me to okonomiyaki when we were both 14.  It's her favorite dish and everytime she comes to the states to visit us, she makes it, and everytime she makes it, it's amazing! My hunt for okonomiyaki in Seattle started when I realized I can never make okonomiyaki as good as our family friend can, and now I've learned, neither can Kushibar.

We ordered the shin gyoza, gyudon (pretty much yakiniku don), katsudon and okonomiyaki.  The shin gyoza wasn't anything special, the gyudon was horribly dry and not very tasty, and the katsudon was decent but we weren't crazy about it. Now for the Okonomiyaki: it was DOUSED in okonomiyaki sauce and mayo -- drenched to the point it made the okonomiyaki completely soggy and overly salty, nothing like the taste that I'm used to.  I didn't even want to eat my second quarter, and we had to remove some of the standing sauce off the top of my friend's second quarter for her to eat it. Ugh.

So alas, my search continues for decent okonomiyaki in Seattle (please let me know if you have the answer!!) knowing to avoid this next time.

This place wasn't all bad though, yes, the place is cute and their outdoor area is fun, the donburi sizes were decent for the price, and that curry popcorn is yummy however; it might take me a while to come back to see if anything else is worth raving about. I've still got the taste of all the sauce and mayo lingering in my mouth. Eeek!

This place is really good for sharing dishes.  However, I felt that it was easy to order too much food because the portions are much bigger than what you expect.  The menu is very large.  There is outdoor seating, even in the winter if you so desire.

I tried the spicy nabeyaki.  It had great flavor and had really nice hot spice in it.  If you do not like spicy foods you probably do not want to order this dish.  If you do, it is delicious with the fishcakes and the kimchee vegetables.

I had the bacon wrapped asparagus spears.  Ok, put bacon around something, I am trying it.  I did and they were delicious.  The bacon was thinly cut so it cooked all the way through leaving it a bit crispy, but not falling apart dry.

Off of the kushiyaki menu, my party ordered a bunch of things which is where it got crazy.  We all wanted to try something so we did.   Everything we had was delicious and came out hot.  I really enjoyed the beef heart and you do not see it on menus very often.  There was also chicken liver and gizzards as well as beef tongue that I want to try next time.  I love chicken gizzards so I hope they are tasty.

Having someone in the party with a less adventurous taste, they ordered the spicy chicken.  It was good, but I mean with all of the other culinary options, I would not have ordered it.  It was spicy, but not too spicy and the fried chicken in it was crispy.  It did not seem to have a sweet component to it like a General Tso's, but was similar to that type of dish.

I tasted the lychee lemonade cocktail.  It was pretty sweet and not for me, but the person who ordered it liked it.  I tasted the ginger cosmo.  That was a lot better because it was less sweet.  I liked the ginger component.

All in all, a delicious communal meal.

The service was good, but not outstanding.

I've been here for HH a few times...and I don't feel like anything I ate was very memorable. This is supposed to be street food themed? I don't think I picked up on that. Japanese street food...oh Tony Bourdain, you've made this style of dining so hip.

The Service was "eh", but I have lowered my expectations for service in Seattle. I think it's just a city thing where all servers are a bit uppity and aloof.

Drink menu was beautiful and delicious...but expennnnnsive. 10 dollar cocktial with only one type of liquor in it? Humph....not really a bang for the buck.

This gets four stars solely for the Salt and Pepper Prawns. They are perfectly crisp and seasoned on the outside and plump and juicy on the inside.... soaked in a jalapeno oil  that adds the perfect amount of heat. A bit pricey for the size, but worth it for the taste.

As for the rest of the menu, the skewers were cheap and decent, but small, if I had just ordered the skewers I would have given it a three. The Spicy Dark meat had a lot of heat, almost to the point that it masked any flavor. The albacore and yellow tail were nicely seasoned, but the server did not tell me which was which and one was more fishy than the other (I am guessing it was the albacore, but again, not sure).

But dudes, the prawns, oh the prawns...

The theme of the restaurant is great--Japanese street food. However, that about ends the things that are "great" about this place. Prices are high, especially for "street food," but I suppose you pay for the Belltown premium. Boyfriend and I shared the tonkotsu ramen and the tasty set. The ramen was pretty good, but was incredibly salty. I even poured some water in my bowl to dilute all the saltiness. After pouring some water into the soup, it was much better, but that's a testament to how unbalanced the ramen was. The tasty set was tasty, but quite pricey, and the portions are so tiny! I think I enjoyed the pork belly skewer the most, but I would have enjoyed it more if it wasn't so small.

I would return, but only if I'm in Belltown, hungry, and it's late at night. Under those conditions, this place is great.

Best part about this place is that you can eat here late. They serve until 1. Therefore, this is amazing drunk food. Don'ts: don't take a first date here, don't build an evening around it. But, if you're in Belltown, you're hungry, and it's late, have at it. Winding down after clubbing? Even better.

I know nothing about Japanese street food except what I see on Anthony Bourdain. However, I'm loving the ramen, the okonamyiaki, and as my friends introduced me to, the "trash can sandwich." There's also lots of "meat on a stick." I'm not a huge "meat on a stick" fan, but I know lots of people are, and the range of choices is impressive.

When you sit down, you get a bowl of popcorn with curry powder, and it's yummy, and just right to tide you over. Oh, and there's Sapporo on tap!

Seriously, if you're in Belltown, give it a try. You don't have to mortgage your house to get meat on a stick, and if you like it, you can always order more.

The outside eating area is pretty nice too -- covered, lots of wood, smells a little like a sauna but makes bigger group gatherings easier. If it's raining it is loud though...be prepared for the tiniest drizzle to sound like a downpour.

Something else that is cheap? Skewers! With just about any meat you could want all fired up for you. My salmon was a little dry, but the chicken was good and I wished I had ordered more. The kimchi was tasty and just right on the spice levels.

Then you have the curry popcorn. Cold, possibly stale popcorn covered in  curry powder which is just the right kind of munchy you need 3 pints in on your happy hour tour. And it is free, so what's not to like about that?

Service seems more intent on refilling your drinks than getting you food, but eh. I don't know if I would come out here outside of HH anyway, so that works alright by me.

Did NOT enjoy my time here when I visited on a Saturday evening.

    Here are the reasons why:
    1. Parking was SO HARD to find. But what do you expect? It's Belltown
    2. I get seated in the semi-outdoor section of the restaurant where the structure is made of plexiglass and wood, thus no insulation. It was freezing cold in that room. Not a happy person at this time.
    3. I order the Yaki Udon which is a "Dry Stir-fried noodles w/veggies & chicken". I receive my dish, and it is in fact WET. That'd have been fine if it ultimately tasted good, which it did not. It was bitter and the chicken had a rubber texture to it.
    4. The waitress hardly paid attention to me. I had to ask for water when I ran out... 15 minutes ago.

The restaurant turns into a nightclub-type area during the weekend nights with the DJ. Seems too pretentious for me. I won't be coming back unless I get dragged there against my will.

I guess the only good thing about my time there was the malibu pineapple drinks I ordered, but how could you make a malibu pineapple wrong?

Came here for a friend's farewell party and was able to accommodate a party of 20 (divided us into two tables).

First off, the main eating area seems like a shack with some plastic panels acting as walls.  When it was raining, it was rather loud and there were also numerous leaks.  The seats are benches, wide benches, which makes getting in and out rather difficult when you're all sitting shoulder to shoulder (good luck if you're a lady wearing a dress!).

Next, the popcorn...possibly the cheapest popcorn on the market.  Dry, tasteless, and drowned in salt and curry powder.  Actually, this could be genius on Kushi's part, make customer eat horrible popcorn so their main entree will taste great.

The prices here are a little high.  Being a ramen fanatic, I went for their special...a $13 special.  Being the most I've paid for a single bowl of ramen, I was unrealistically hoped that this was going to be the world's best ramen.

    what a $13 ramen looks like:  http://www.yelp.com/bi...

The bowl was pretty big and their was a bunch of veggies in it.  Taste wise, just seemed like a typical shio ramen.  Great tasting or horrible, I ate that entire thing to some how justify myself in spending $13 for it.

They messed up a bunch of orders, but since we waited so long, we didn't care.

I really like restaurants that give you something to munch on while waiting for your food to come out. At Kushibar they give you curry popcorn! :) My table of 3 finished 2 bowls of popcorn because it was that tasty.

It was a nice evening so we decided to sit out in the front room.
My table ordered a lot of yakitori, along with a hiroshima style original okonomiyaki, yakisoba, and a katsu don. The food was delicious and it was a good filling amount that we ended up with some leftovers.

There was just one other table in the patio with us so I guess thats why the waitress didn't stop by as often as we'd like

Friggin' love this place, although my friends sometimes complain about the lack of parking. But it has this pretty cool extension part of the main restaurant where the bar is and it's kinda like eating on the street except less street-y. The extension does get colder in the winter and freakin' hot in the summer, but hey, that's what you get on the real streets! I heart me some kim chee fried rice (hold the pork) that is my staple when I go there. Deee-licious! And the skewers are pretty good, too, albeit a little expensive compared to other skewered-meat places like Satay. But the best skewers, to me, are the cheaper and more unusual ones. The chicken skin skewer is crunchy and yummy and my favorite. I also like the gizzard. I do sometimes splurge on the salmon with mayo one which just melts in your mouth. Love the okonomiyaki but I think I may prefer Wann's takoyaki and okonomiyaki to the ones at Kushibar.

Definitely one of my faves :)

Staff is very friendly. It's a great place for a late night happy hour. The environment is very upbeat with good pop music. The udon was huge, however, the chicken meat was a bit dry.

    SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!

I went to go get those fishies and... and.... *sniffle*

They are caught in an unsustainable way, so they don't serve them anymore.

Props for being earth friendly. For serious. But I'm sad they're not there anymore!

Stopped here to meet a crowd of people at about 10pm on Friday and the place was alive and kicking. Service, despite the trend captured in the reviews here, actually was pretty great considering how busy the joint was and also that we joined our party late, after they had already ordered, received, and consumed food. We were able to place our orders quickly and our water glasses were never empty.

I ordered the beef tongue skewer, and the Pork Belly skewer. They were cheap, and the size reflected the price but they were pretty tasty. The pork belly wasn't nearly as bacony awesome as I expected, but still pretty damn good. The beef tongue was great.

This place gets extra points for carrying Zubrowka vodka. But those points are mitigated by the noise level. My throat was sore from yelling by the time my group left.

The art on the walls is also extra awesome.

I really really like this place. I had the spicy nabeyaki and it was soooo goood! Mmm seriously. I have never been so in love with UDON. and the soup was HUGE! I could barely finish it. I probably ate half or 3/4 of it. Their Kimchee that I ordered on the side was okay. I have had better... it was so bitter. I have hade homemade kimchee better. Even the last time I went there it tasted better.

But we also ordered the kamikaze wings (I didn't get to try it) and house set with all the meats and seafood. I had the scallops... IDK if they were supposed to be seared or what, but it was slightly under-cooked. The salmon was delicious though. My other friend also ordered the tofu yaki soba which was delicious. Mmm! She had a hard time finishing it too (we all shared our dishes too) and she also tried the shrimp tempura which was delish!

My only complaint that I had which is why I'm updating this is the waitress. She gave us horrible service. She checked on us probably twice or thrice. Whereas the other waitress, (we observed), checked on her patrons at least 3x as much as our waitress. Our waitress NEVER gave us our popcorn!!! And I love their popcorn. we finally had to ask the girl who was serving water for some popcorn and she finally gave us some. While others got baskets of refills on popcorn, we did not. We also had to ask to order our food b/c the waitress didn't check on us when HH started and we wanted the HH prices. It was just hard to believe that the other waitress was doing everything right (refills on popcorn, quickly greeted and served popcorn right when people were seated, asked for orders, offered specials, and even asked all the tables if they wanted anything from HH as HH started)... I really liked her. I wish I had her.

But aside from that disappointment, I love this place. and will always come back :)
