Review from Dan J.
Vancouver, BC
UPDATE: I received word that Steve's son has taken over the business and has re-located it to Steveston. So, if you need a disemboweled moose that looks like it was attacked by werewolves, or a twenty-five foot salt water crocodile for your living room you know where to go.
Tragically Mr. Kulash passed away last year due to a fire in the basement of his home. Last I heard his son was left his vast collection.
Perhaps this is a posthumous review but I am going to write anyhow because it would truly be a shame if this wonderful and fascinating collection were to be lost to Vancouver.
Kulash was venerated in Vancouver. He was a strong supporter of the arts. I was introduced to his work when I attended Emily Carr. He generously donated or offered at a great discount the use of some of his creations to students.
I rented an enormous Raven in flight and numerous other stuffed trophies for photo shoots. His prices were fair. He understood I didn't have the budget of some of the big film studios that also rented from him and was very accommodating. I especially enjoyed spending time watching him work and chatting with him. He was intriguing and engaging.
Taxidermy is a lost craft. Sure it can seem icky or odd or whatever to some people, but I respect his craftsmanship, his passion and his unique skills. And I admire the fascinating body of work he left behind. He was a one of a kind artisan in this city.
I hope his creations will be available for rent or for sale so his legacy can remain alive in museums, photos & in film.Listed in: Photography., my R's OTD.
