After traveling to the depths of Barrington Place Shops, I finally located this little knit shop. My first impression of the place was, "really?" I was unimpressed by the lack of professionalism - it's supposed to be a store, not a messy living room. As I browse the haphazardly displayed yarns, there was a smallish stock of commercial yarns, at least compared to a regular knit shop. However, there was also a separate room that housed a messy and somewhat sparse display of hand-dyed and/or hand spun specialty yarn. Throughout the store, there were also displays of unique, creativce hand knit accessories for sale, made by the owner.
I also couldn't complain about the prices, and I ended up buying a skein of brown-red wool (labeled only as 'Nova Scotia wool') for five bucks. I was able to pay by debit, after it was fished out of two feet of paper and other debris visible behind the counter.
I think this could be a really neat store if the shop owner just made things more professional. It would inspire much more confidence in the products if that level was higher.
Specialties
Kreative Knits & Designs is definitely not a traditional retail shop. It is the studio/workshop of Halifax fashion designer and textile artist, Liona Jollota. Liona's spring 2012 collection will be available by mid-April.
We also carry a selection of fashions, accessories, home decor and gifts by other Nova Scotia designers and artisans as well as knitting supplies and selected vintage items. This week we have handmade Belgian Chocolate Easter bunnies by Rosemary's Chocolates.
We specialize in custom knitting -- if you can describe it to us or sketch it for us, we can knit it for you.
We also teach knitting and felting and help knitters with their projects.
On Saturdays the shop is closed but we are open in the Historic Farmers Market at the Brewery (1496 Lower Water Street).
History
Established in 1978
Liona learned to knit at age three when her grandmother taught her to knit clothing for her dolls. By age 15, she established her knitting business and used it to earn the money to for her university degree in Computing Science and Math. She opened retail shop in 2004. In January 2010, after 24 years in Finance and IT related positions, she decided to work full time as a knitting designer and textile artist.
Meet the Business Owner: Liona J.
Liona was born in Halifax, NS and has lived here most of her life except for a year spent in Ottawa in 1985.
