The Kraut King is a tiny little diner tucked underneath the Garry Street parkade...kind of an odd place but it caught my attention. There's probably enough seating for about 12 people around the counter table that wraps around the open kitchen. The interior is fairly dated but it gives the place a lot of character. It's also very clean and well maintained.

If I could give 3.5 stars, I would. But can't do half stars on Yelp. They call themselves the "Home of the Bratwurst & Schnitzel" - I tried both and I have to say I prefer the bratwurst over the schnitzel. You can get the bratwurst on a bun (small kaiser bun) or on sauerkraut for about $5. The bratwurst is really juice and flavourful - great if you love that kind of stuff. The sauerkraut was tangy and provided a nice contrast to the bratwurst.

The schnitzel in pepper cream sauce with spaetzle is a massive dish - I had it for lunch and I am still full and it's way past dinner time for me (I only ate about 60% of it). I was expecting a strong peppercorn taste in the sauce (similar to the peppercorn sauce on steaks) but this sauce was kinda orangey in colour and tasted quite bland. The sauce tasted like reduced cream so that was kinda disappointing. The pork schnitzel was a very large piece of meat - it took up more than half my plate. It's not a breaded schnitzel, although I was expecting that...it was just plain and grilled on the flat top. The meat was very tender but it wasn't very flavourful. The spaetzle, is like a noodle/dumpling that has a similar consistency to gnocchi although it's not made with potatoes but with eggs and flour. The spaetzle was a nice starchy side dish to this meaty dish.

The best part of this place has to be the bavarian pretzel. It's only $1.40 for this small pretzel - better than the ones you can get at the mall. It tastes similar to the pretzels I had on the streets of NYC. It had a nice chewy texture with a great hit of coarse salt sprinkled on top and goes best with the hot mustard they have there. I will definitely go back for those pretzels!!! Yum!

It's a cute place with warm and friendly service. The bratwurst and the pretzels are definitely worth a visit. But a warning to vegetarians and people with diet restrictions - almost all of the meat dishes here are pork, except for maybe 2 or 3 items that are beef. There's no chicken dish here.
