Seattle, WA
I really like this little sushi place in Wallingford. The food is very good and the fish is always fresh, even on Mondays. I've been told that this place gets their salmon whole, as opposed to them being chopped up into small portions.
I've never had a bad experience here. The service is good and the cooks are very friendly and quite conversational (if you sit at the bar and feel like chopping it up a little with them).
As with many places on 45th St in Wallingford, this places does not have off street parking. However, this doesn't seem to deter the customers as this places seems to always be packed, especially during peak dinner time. -

Beer is cheap. Monk fish liver is great.
We ordered toro but they brought out regular tuna with no marble. When we questioned it they said that is toro. The calamari is tasteless and fatty. We ordered soceye salmon but they brought out regular tuna that doesn't have the right color.
The rolls are decent. -

Kozue is my go to Japanese Happy Hour in Wallingford. And wanna know the best thing? It's like always happy hour here! Don't be fooled by their happy hours on their website, it's almost always happy hour.
Great small plates, my boyfriend loves their spicy tofu. Happy hour roll rotates daily, and I love their crunchy Philly roll. A few items on their happy hour menu have been hit or miss, but most everything has been tasty.
The place is usually busy, but no problem getting a table unlike Mushashi's down the street which is too nutso for me. The staff is friendly and quick too. -
Review from Matt R.
pretty solid happy hour. Runs from open to 9pm on weekdays. Lots of food options (maybe 15 different plates)- all $3.
Portions are pretty tiny- but the quality was good. Tried the Roll of the Day (spicy scallop)- tasty.
Calamari with cod roe sauce- average
Teriyaki Beef- very good
White fish sashimi- nice and fresh, tasted great
Albacore Poke- nice- but a crazy ripoff given that it had only 5 very small peices of fish
Wasabi Octopus- nice- but again- lacking octopus.
Rest of the table had other plates. Spicy tofu was one of the favorites of the table.
Wine is $2.75 during HH, Large Sake was $3.50.
Got pretty busy at 6ish.
All things considered- we have a great time and the quality and value were good. -

I love Kozue for both their dinner and their happy hour. Their Happy Hour is the best. It's from 5 until 6:30 on weekdays and 3 to 6:30 on Saturdays. They have a wide variety of food items that are very cheap. From sushi rolls, to terriyaki, and calamari and poke, they've got it on their happy hour menu. But their happy hour plates are small, so for a fuller belly I turn to their dinner menu.
Their dinner menu is also very comprehensive. All the dishes I've tried here over the years have been wonderful. I especially like their Grilled Mackerel. All the rolls I've tried here are also very wonderful. I've been to Japanese sushi restaurants where their sushis all embody the same ingredients: imitation crab, avocado, cucumber, and a little wasabi. But at Kozue, each roll is different, has their own style, and are delicious.Listed in: Best Happy Hour

I've been to this place two times, and there were great experiences. Their happy hour is awesome! The rolls are pretty small, but the prices are great. I've felt satisfied every time I've come here. The food is good quality and it seems like they take care of their restaurant.

Review from Jeanny M.
Chirashi bowl! We opted for the regular chirashi, they have a fancier one that is labelled as a 'double-decker' which I cannot even comprehend, but we'll probably try it at some point in the future.
The "regular" chirashi bowl was excellent. It had several types of sashimi, smallish pieces (couple inches long), a few pieces of tamago, and a decent portion of seaweed salad. The rice was topped with green flecks of stuff and there was prolly 2c of rice in the bowl. I was pleased with the variety, but the hub preferred to have fewer with larger pieces. It was noticeably missing some roe, I like the pop 'n' crunch and its splash of color, but it's ok to do without.
For a couple bucks more than the other sushi place down the way, Kozue was a nice stand-in for a quick bite ($16.50) and they take credit cards! Nice service, quick and attentive.
I was rather surprised to learn that one piece of unagi nigiri (on a bed of rice, wrapped with nori and a little bit of sauce) was $2.75 for ONE. That kind of blew my mind since that's usually the price for two pieces. It was well made and tasted as good as other places, average size, but damn..$2.75 each?
Another nit-picky thing is that we were seated in view of the restroom. It would be nice if they had a single panel screen that could obscure that a bit.
Anyhow, aside from that, we really enjoyed the chirashi bowl and my sushi craving was adequately met.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Amazing sushi, especially for the price. Have tried a different roll every visit and so far have loved every bit.
Super-small establishment, but so far haven't had to wait for seating despite it always being busy. -

This place was plan B since Musashi's, which is down the street was a waste of our time. We came here with half full bellies and had such a good time! I love the cozy atmosphere here and they have some great appetizers! We got the Chu-Hi grapefruit sake which was so good and so cheap! We also had-
-spicy oysters, probably not going to get these again.
-assorted tempura, good, nice little side dish to have while enjoying other food.
-black cod and tofu, which was good but I wish the fish was a little softer and more sauce on both the skewers.
Customer service was good and there are many more things I would like the try next time. This place fills up SUPER fast so I will know to go early next time! ALSO, HH from 5-7? YUM! -

Went there because I had a coupon. The space was a little cramped. We ended sitting pretty close to another couple. I could have reached over with my chopsticks and grabbed some sushi of their plate. The reason I am giving it 4 stars though was the sushi was excellent. Nice, fat, slabs of fish. Not a romantic setting.

Used a http://restaurant.com gift cert. tonight and presented it to the server... I had to wonder later if that made a difference on the quality of the sushi and chirashi. The chirashi was about as lame as I have ever had...some skinny pieces of salmon and tuna, torn up albacore, old dark avocado, tilapia, and egg. Not very attractive nor of avg. quality. The sushi platter for $25 was very good if you like uni, amaebi, ikura, unagi, ikura, and hamachi.... all higher end sushi....decent quality. The chicken kara age was very generous, delicious, perfectly cooked and the highlight of our meal. The happy hour calamari was meh.... five fingers of deep fried squid with a small dollop of sauce. The deep fried salmon bites were weird. Imagine little nuggets filled with salmon fat. I am not kidding. I was expecting salmon, like pink fleshy fish. Not globs of battered deep fried nuggets of belly fat. I bit into the first one and thought....whoa....all fat??? like as much omega 3 as a costco size bottle of fish oil supps. Next nugget, same thing, next nugget, etc..... finally, my wife took a bite out of one and found Pink colored salmon inside..... YAY! Service was very attentive, very prompt and food was brought out at a good pace. We were the only diners in there however as it was 5 oclock when we walked in. Overall, prices are attractive, coupon saved us a lot but I will be trying other places before I venture back here again.

Meh. It's a'ight. They have some great looking outdoor seating and some happy hour food and drink specials, but few of those things are things that I'd normally order.
The takoyaki was pretty good. Their $1 side salad was among the worst side salads I've had recently, and all the others have been at Japanese restaurants and also very simple. Their $1 miso soup side was pretty tasty.
Their nigiri sushi, however, left much to be desired. The look, feel, and taste of both the fish and the rice weren't what I'm used to seeing at a fantastic sushi spot. Pretty sure I've had better nigiri luck at Blue C.
This may be a good spot for rolls and cooked food, but I don't recommend it if you're looking for some nigiri or sashimi in the neighborhood.Listed in: Nigiri, sashimi, chirashi,…, Best of Wallingford

Love this place. Been going there for years and years now. It's an authentic Japanese sushi joint. Not pretentious like so many American renditions, but down to earth and cozy.
Reminded me very much of the places I used to frequent when I lived in Japan. For that, and the great quality I will always go back to this place. -

This is my fav go-to place for lunch. The sushi lunch price is terrific, even if they cut the fish thinner than for dinner. The fish is always fresh and there's a wonderful array of delectable dishes to try if you look at the offerings posted on the wall -- like their forest mushroom salad with honey mustard dressing, one of my favorites. The nabeyaki udon is perfect for our cold, rainy weather and I never have to ask them to refill my tea cup. They are also very accommodating to vegetarians. Parking is tough at night but easy enough during the day. Remember to get your frequent lunch card - every meal of $5 or more gets you one "rice bowl" stamp. With ten of these, you get $5 off your next lunch.

Fri 1/13/12 5pm: Kozue/ Seattle WA: We're first to arrive and the tables steadily getting filled, good thing we came early. Most dishes are fresh and perfectly seasoned, not salty nor sweet, you can still taste the freshness, whether it's fish or seaweed or tofu or the rice. We love Black cod+tofu, Seaweed salad, Spicy Salmon bowl = great portion, Salmon skin roll, Yosenabe Udon; perfectly matched with the house sake with Happy Hour price. A couple didn't pass the rating: Geoduck butter = too much butter and mushroom, not enough Geoduck. Calamari strips = too tender, it makes you think what kind of tenderizer did they use. We can say, we prefer Kozue now instead of Rain Sushi in this Wallingford neighborhood. Rain Sushi is also fresh but tends to use more cream in their ingredients.
We'd come back with a coupon, it helps to keep the price down; Even this, we've noticed their coupon price has been raised. Service was great. 4 stars -

On a eating trip in Wallingford we stopped off here to hopefully try some, what I like to call, "Steroid" rolls.
Completely unmemorable, we tried the "crunchy roll with tuna, shrimp and tempura for dipping on the side. First things first, I find the tempura dipping to be gross and unsanitary.
Why don't you just roll the outside of the roll in tempura with that black tobiko. As well, tuna quality is pretty terrible here. Light pink in color, looking like bad seedless watermelon and mushy and mealy to texture. As well the fried shrimp in the inner core was over cooked and definitely pre cooked. I'm saying 20 plus minutes pre cooked.
This is the kind of restaurant that does white people sushi bad. I love a roll with everything on it, but execution has to be done right. Kozue, your smiles are nice but your rolls are in the dog house.
As well tried, was unagi sushi. Mediocre, served standard style. Musashi is better.
You get one star because it just didn't taste fresh and clean. Two key words to a pleasant dining experience anywhere, otherwise known as mandatory. -
Review from Kevin E.
How in the world did I not come here before now? $1.00 for one piece of nigiri sushi is a steal for happy hour lunch.
The quality of the sushi was good, not great. Some of the nigiri and roll sushi were better than others. I ordered all nigiri except for one unagi roll, which was small and hardly had any unagi in it though had the nice unagi sauce on top. It still tasted good, and for $1.50 I'm really not complaining. Just saying. I had four pieces of ikura for $4.00, which is a great deal.
My friend and I wouldn't have even been here today if May Restaurant hadn't been closed at and after 11:30 a.m. We weren't patient to see if they were going to open but rather, were frustrated by it. So we walked next door and found Kozue Restaurant open and advertising $1 nigiri sushi. Yes, please!
The service was prompt and helpful when we first got there and my only complaint I had about the service was that I would have liked more water after we finished eating. The restaurant was nice, clean and it smelled nice upon entering. -

I was running late after an appointment in Wallingford today and got to Kozue literally at 1:59 (they close at 2). I reluctantly opened the door, sheepishly poking my head in to see if they would mind feeding this late sap.
I shouldn't have been surprised, but the sushi cooks greeted me and the waitress insisted ABSOLUTELY!
I got a couple items off the lunch special list and a couple off their regular menu. The food was fantastic as always and I was really impressed with their service, especially considering how annoying my last-minute visit probably was.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Kozue's $1 sushi happy hour is seriously awesome. The quality of sushi was definitely not the best, but decent and enjoyable. Their black cod bento box came with a nice variety of tempura, which I thought was surprisingly well executed. I hate grease-heavy over-battered wanna-be tempura. Kozue's tempura was light, crispy, and pretty delicate. The agedashi tofu in the bento box could have stayed in the fryer for a bit longer, but the black cod was pretty delicious.
The hot tea (hoji-cha) they served was very good; the service was friendly and prompt. I like Kozue! -

Though originally planning on going to Musashi's sushi next door, we realized, ooops, it's closed on Monday... no worries, there are two more sushi places within 2 minutes walking distance (Issian and Kozue). Kozue was closer and looked like a beach cabana, so my lady love and I decided to go for it. We were seated immediately and ordered a ton of happy hour selections.
takoyaki - creamy batter w/ a beautiful mayo
mussels - what a kick, great spice
fried salmon - crunchy crunchy fatty delicious
seaweed salad - delightful combination of acid and sweet
shumai - filled w/ the cutest little shrimp, adorable
teriyaki beef - sweet and savory goodness
Each dish has flavor bursting out the seams, everyone joins in at the party in my mouth, what a culinary experience. I WILL be back, the food is intense!!! -

The Dragon is so unbelievably delicious, but is never on special. They usually put up with me asking for extra TEMPURA flakes... mmm.
Agedashi Tofu is perfect.
Traditional fish is really good quality. Good saba and maguro. Lunch pricing really can't be beat.
They've been doing this cool thing all spring/"summer" where they are charging lunch prices at dinner and offering happy hour during the normal lunch rush hours. Can't go wrong with what you can get for the price. -

I have eaten at Kozue at least ten times and love their lunch specials, particularly their frequent luncher punch card. My favorite dish is the sauteed geoduck with onions and mushrooms, a side of white rice, and a cup of miso soup. The service is always great and the staff are always smiling.

Read the yelp reviews. The picture doesnt do it justice. It was rainy, of course, so no outside seating, but inside was warm and cozy. there's about a dozen tables. I'm into basic sushi. LOVED the crunchy California roll and the asparagus roll. I think the sushi is their strength. We also had the fried oysters, Katsu Curry and the Teriyaki salmon. All good. Perfect place for a casual dinner

Now this is how a restaurant should be run.
1. Someone immediately acknowledges you when you walk in and tells you how long of a wait you have.
2. You are seated sooner than expected and immediately given menus and an opportunity to order a drink which arrives soon after that.
3, Your food arrives in a timely manner and is delicious. (The geoyduck clam was not tough as expected and had almost a chicken quality to it, that together with the mushrooms and onions it was sauted in made for a great side dish. The eel and eggplant was also a surprise treat)
4. The wait staff is attentive and cheerful.
5. You've impressed me as a dinner guest so much, that you will immediately come to mind next time I'm looking for Japanese food in Seattle. -

I always go to Wallingford with Mushashi in my sights, but any indication of a wait and I beat feet for Kozue (which is just two blocks east). The service is very good and the prices are reasonable. Plus, the menu has extreme depth and variety. My knockout combo (split between 2 hungry people) consists of
2 happy hour appetizers (they're all good!)
Salmon or Cod Bento Box
Double Decker Chirashi (Exactly like what it sounds, plenty of fish and rice.)
Cost After Tip: $50-$60 -

I came here and took advantage of the happy hour specials.
I ate:
Asparagus Tempura roll (their happy hour special) - delicious
Spicy Simmered Mussels - delicious
Striped Bass Nigiri - delicious (the fish was perfect)
a large house sake - good for the price
I will come back here. The service was great, and the food was delicious and fresh. -
Review from Rona L.
I was a little skeptical of this place when we walked in. Usually, when an establishment sells both teriyaki AND sushi, it's not the sushi that you want to go there for.
However, this place changed my mind. Their wall menu of sushi rolls made me want to order every one of them. The sushi was pretty good, fresh, and enjoyable. For lunch, they have a $1 nigiri special, and my friends and I had our fill. They also had some great roll options - though I would warn you to opt out of the eel roll (there was hardly any eel in ours).
My friend got the yakisoba. The noodles were cooked nicely but it was lacking in sodium.
Either way, cheap sushi for lunch? I'm in! -

My friend and I came here on a Monday night, and it was still packed.
While the food is a bit more expensive than other sushi places, the taste is really very good. I had the shrimp tempura and the dumplings. And I am still craving some of those dumplings a day later.
They offer you free warm tea if you ask for it; otherwise you're just sitting there with your water :P
Def. worth it if you're in the area and craving Japanese. Their happy hour menu looks good too, but honestly, I am sure it'll be even more packed then! -
Review from Lisa N.
$1 nigiri and $1.50 rolls at lunch!! Aiya, I think I'm in love.
Okay, I know 'aiya' was the wrong kind of Asian to be speaking when describing a Japanese place, but who can not love anything under $2 at a non-McDonalds establishment? It's almost unheard of!
The $1 selection is just single nigiri, but after a few bucks I get full enough from just the rice! The rolls are simple (avocado, tuna, salmon, etc), but worth it. There are some non-$1 rolls on the lunch order slip and some seem pretty complicated (Polar Bear roll? what?), but are explained on the back of the actual menu. The fish is fresh and cut well-- none of those ugly raw edges caused by inexperienced chefs and unsharpened knives. Service is good and fast and I can't complain about the prices either :)
They close between lunch and dinner so be sure to get there before 2pm if you're trying to catch the lunch special! -

I've eaten here twice, and wasn't super impressed by the food. It was all good, but not stand-out. However, it's hard for me to eat out with 2 young kids. This place makes it easier. We arrived right at 5:00 on a Thursday. We were the only ones there, but later 2 other families with young kids also arrived. The waitress brought the kids water in plastic cups AND even had divider-kid-plates for them, complete with plastic kid-utensils! The staff was very nice and welcoming. The restaurant also had a nice, clean interior. (I was a little surprised because it looks so-so on the outside.) I'll definitely keep this place in mind for family dining.

Review from Nerick M.
I got introduced to this place from a friend who told me that they served up $1 sushi rolls for lunch. At first I was a little skeptical, however, I decided to try it because I do love sushi and a good deal. After I tried it the first time, I used to frequent this place during lunch breaks a couple of times a week.
Yeah, the $1 sushi rolls for lunch are smaller than the typical sushi rolls. They have a small list of rolls which you can choose from that only have one ingredient in the core, like salmon, avocado, cucumber, etc. I usually go crazy when ordering $1 sushi rolls from this place. There are 6 pieces per roll and I usually order about 7-8 rolls (like I said, they're smaller than normal rolls). It sounds like a lot, but not really....at least for me. I stick with my favorites like the salmon and the avocado. It looks really cool when they bring out all that sushi on a huge platter. They also have $1 nigiri, which are equally tasty.
The service is really good there and I've never had any complaints. It's a small joint, so make sure you get there a little early to beat the lunch crowd. Be sure to try their other specials, like ginger pork or combination plates. -

Review from Ian S.
There is nothing wrong with the sushi here. It is better than average.
That is not the draw for me to come here, however.
That draw would be the Japanese home cookin'.
In fact, I'm not even sure what my favorite is. Where Musashi's down the street has the lock on the neighborhood sushi, I did not fully appreciate this place in their ability to throw down some serious (even though I hate the term) "comfort food."
Finally. Someone has the pork. Bring me my katsu!
They also have a highly decent udon. I was kind of surprised at the prices at first.
"Over ten dollars for soup? That is a bit strange," I thought.
There is a good reason. It's enough for two, comes in a huge thick steel bowl to retain heat while you attempt to eat it all, and was delivered to the table with two serving bowls.
The challenge of eating a very large and awesome udon was not beyond me. Please allow me to thump my chest and bellow a manly and gluttonous roar.
*ahem*
Also their happy hour (5-6:30) specials are fearsome! Huge beers and large sake for cheap cheap cheap! Perhaps cheaper than what you can buy in a grocery store around here.
I am tempted to call down a Yelp Happy Hour upon them, but we would nearly fill the place. I don't think they would mind the way the YHHH [Yelp Happy Hour Homies] eat and drink, but it might seriously damage their calm.
I need to remember to eat here a lot more frequently. I have a lot of menu to cover and many things I have not yet tried. -

Konichiwa!
I have been dyin' for some good real- deal Japanese food as of late..
I love sushi, don't get me wrong. Great sashimi isn't the easiest thing to find.. but I wanted a meal. A traditional Japanese meal.. not the easiest thing to come by.
I came to Kozue.
Tons of great trad Japanese favorites, including Katsu-don, Udon (lots to choose from), and several Bento boxes.
I had the Sashimi Bento. It came with 6 different pieces of Sashimi, way too much Tempura (veggie and shrimp), agadashi tofu, rice, salad, and miso. Fantastic! The sashimi was perfect and the miso was delightful. The agadashi was perfectly done.. and $10! A better bento than Wasabi Bistro (theirs is good, but it's also flashy).. and a bit more authentic.
Also, $1 sushi specials for lunch- tons to choose from.
Perfect lunch and they also have a card. For every $5 you spend, you get a stamp. 10 stamps and you get $5 off lunch. Not a bad deal if you frequent here often.
Service is good, the people are pleasant, and you can sit outside on the deck if you so choose.
Haven't done their HH yet.. but it sounds like a good 'un.
Props! -

Good lord, just how many sushi places does one street need? Idea for Yelp DYL: sushi and sake pub crawl on N. 45th...
Black cod, people, black cod. Kozue has a black cod and tofu skewer appetizer on the dinner menu that is delish - the black cod has a sake glaze (it's like buttah!) and the tofu had a miso sauce I think. I couldn't really tell but I liked it. They actually have many really good appetizer small plates for under $5, and I thought they were the stand out of dinner.
The sushi was fresh and sweet, although we noticed the maguro was sliced the wrong way. It was weird, but like I said, fresh so I didn't mind a bit. They have three kinds of california roll: regular, crunchy, and one with fresh crab. The rolls are really well priced, so we got the fresh crab, and it was disappointingly dry. I can't believe I'm saying this, but a little mayo would have really helped.
We got a cute little bottle of chilled sake that I loved for $10, and the rest of the list looked really good, too. You don't often see a sake list with lots of options that are affordable, too, so I'll be back to try more. There's also a seafood miso noodle soup on the menu I want to give a whirl, but I was in the market for sashimi this time....
This is my new go-to everyday sushi place! And when you go, be sure to get the black cod. See black cod in anything on the menu, and just order it, all of it.Listed in: Someone Oughtta Take You To…

I enjoyed my recent sushi experience here. The fish was cleanly cut and tasty. The rolls were neatly made, though I did notice a reliance on cucumber (which I really hate in my sushi). The teriyaki sauce for the eel was a trifle thick. Spicy scallops were excellent. Complimentary hot tea upon request tasted bitter at first but quickly grew on you. The mackarel nigiri was most excellent and I think one of my new favorite fishes to eat. The sushi is priced lower than most other places I have seen ($9 for a very tasty dragon roll? Wow.)
I noticed the reviews weren't very positive but I've definitely had a lot of bad sushi in my lifetime. This doesn't qualify. It might not be the best but it's a good, solid sushi experience.
