I'm rounding this place up because I feel it deserves more credit than 3.5 since it's been around for awhile and the staff is super friendly.

I had been on a cruise ship for a week so I was in desperate need for any type ethnic food, so my review my be a tad bias. ;) I ordered an order of tomago and a lunch bento with chicken teriyaki and pork katsu.

My tomago was different than others I have had in my day but I'm guessing this is because I have been eating the gringo version this whole time. But honestly, I like the way I've been eating it before. The biggest problem I had with it was that it warm and I really dislike most warm sushi-- especially one involving eggs.

The teriyaki was decent. I enjoyed the fact the chicken didn't feel cheap and scary. The star of the show was the pork katsu because it was juicy and properly fried-- not dripping with grease. In my opinion, that's the way katsu should be. The salad had a super gingery dressing which isn't my thang but it wasn't bad. And the hot sauce was DELICIOUS! :)

Overall the food tasted pretty good ( nothing was too WOW), the staff was nice and the price was right. What more do people want?

Came here during a vacation to Victoria. I've lived in Vancouver and Seattle and I've been to Japan, so my bar for Japanese food is high, and Koto fell short both on the available selection and the quality of the food. They had only one kind of sake (Gekkeikan), few rolls, and a lot of the non-sushi food items were repetitive chicken choices. The sushi that we did order was okay but it didn't taste as good as other places back home. The salmon nigiri in particular was very odd--the cut of the fish did not look anything like salmon nigiri. I suspect a lot of the fish was not entirely fresh.

I was here with a group of people from Seattle and I think most of us felt the same way. If you are used to really good Japanese food then go somewhere else.

Loved this place!  Food quality was excellent and priced just right!  Sushi and sashimi were VERY fresh.  Udon was done perfectly.  chicken teriyaki was made with with breast meat but came out very tender and moist.  Service was a little bit slower than other places but everyone was very polite and competent.  Would definitely recommend.

The day before I got married, I was so nervous I could puke! I was certain I wouldn't be able to eat a thing, until my future-wife spotted this adorable storefront Japanese restaurant. Unfamiliar with the city of Victoria, we decided to gamble on Koto in hopes of a decent, veggie-friendly meal. The location was convenient, and Japanese food has a good reputation for being vegetarian-friendly.

We were seated in a very quiet, private booth near the sushi bar. The sushi bar was (wo)manned by an older woman who smiled at us for most of the time we were there. Maybe we were glowing in our wedding bliss, or maybe she was just really nice. Hard to say.

Our server was friendly and offered helpful recommendations - she tried to talk us out of the natto roll. Although we eventually ordered it anyway, it was sweet that she was looking out for us.  We started with a warm, comforting miso soup. The yam tempura roll was delicious! I had never eaten yam tempura sushi before. All of the veggie rolls were fresh & flavorful. The food came quickly, the service was precise, and I was able to eat every single bite! Weird, Koto cured my bride-to-be jitters!

Thanks for being a part of Our Special Day!!

My husband and I stumbled upon this place wandering around in search of a good bite. The wait staff was very friendly, the seating was nice and private, quiet, and the food was delicious! It was a lovely eating experience all around.

Tagorma was so good it made me weep. Dont bother with their specialty cocktails; weak and uninteresting.

Firstly: this is not primarily a sushi restaurant, it's a Japanese restaurant with some sushi. Its selection of fish, for example, is much smaller than you would expect from a true sushi establishment in this part of the world. Having said that, the sushi were huge and quite all right (with the exception of one piece of salmon which was a bad cut and the rather chewy squid). For some reason we were served what appeared to be toro (fatty tuna) rather than maguro (the leaner, cheaper part), which was fine by me as it's so much more tasty. We tried plenty of other dishes as well: miso soup, edamame, teriyaki salmon, udon salad, octopus sunomono and a Victoria roll. They were all right, nothing mindblowing, but good food. The udon salad was the most noteworthy. So: if you want sushi, you may want to go elsewhere unless a small selection of huge sushi is just what you're in the mood for. For a mix of Japanese dishes, this place seems all right but we haven't checked out the local competition. Oh, and they take plenty of credit cards and had milk for the kids, both of which are somewhat unusual for Japanese restaurants. Three stars plus.

Service is slow, even though they were not busy.  The meal was relatively expensive, and the food was no better than any of the other sushi places in the city.
