My wife and I had a favourite little place in Seoul - it was the only place near us that served the very local and hard-to-find dish called takalbi. When we first arrived in Ottawa, we asked a local Korean grocery store owner if there was a takalbi place in town. Unbelievably, he said yes and directed us to Korean Bar B-Q. It is a quirky little place in a really funky building on Willbrod Street in the Ottawa U district. They make a wonderful takalbi and they make it the way it is supposed to be made - in a wok, on a grill at your table. They even had the big Korean rice noodles called dok. It was delish - a chicken stir fry with dok, sweet potato, cabbage and a spicy red sauce that literally burns your lips, but in a good way! And after you eat it down a little, the waiter mixes in some rice. It is a meal that evolves as you eat it. Now, there are other Korean barbecue specialties on the menu - bulgogi, chap chai, etc. But, you can get those anywhere. Takalbi, however, is a rare find. Korean Bar B-Q does have parking out front, but it is limited. The clientele seems to be local home-owners and university kids, so prepared for a buzz in the dining room as you eat. Oh, and it is a licensed establishment so you can wash down the spices with a cold beer or soju.
