DISCLAIMER: While my Skeptic little self has never experience Knox United Church (or any other church, truth be told) as a religious organization, I really appreciate its role in Calgary's music community.
It would seem that all of the best shows occur at Knox. It is where I have had the chance to see some of my favourite (has anyone else noticed that Yelp totally spellchecks the Canadian spelling of FAVOURITE? Probably just jealous that we spell it proper) artists perform, such as Owen Pallet, Timber Timbre, Daniel Johnston, Dan Mangan, and the list goes on. I've seen Owen Pallet a few times here, and the acoustics of the church always contain his violin music more beautifully than I have ever witnessed seeing his act at outdoor festivals or larger venues. Daniel Johnston was also completely haunting, which I believe the space contributed to a lot.
The church itself aesthetically is absolutely gorgeous, and rich in history, from what I understand. The sound is something I just can't get over. Incredible. There is something about this venue that makes me all warm inside. I actually sometimes attend shows based on whether or not it is at Knox.Listed in: a list for book worms,…

As a live music venue Knox United is exquisite! There is not a bad seat in the house, excellent sound and an intimate atmosphere that is hard to match.
By no means am I a church going person but I cannot deny the inherent beauty of this place with it's rustic interior and air of rich history.
I would have never of thought I would be anxious to sit on the wooden pews of a church again but Knox United is a sight to behold! -

Another great concert @ the Knox!! This time it was for a much larger crowd in attendance to watch The Tallest Man on Earth.
i had a chance to roam around the place a little bit and didn't realize there was a basement floor. Lining up for the washroom was an interesting experience that prompted me to reflect on my own taste in fashion (lack thereof), there were over a dozen guys in tight jeans, cardigans, and sported greasy pompadours. It also felt like everything in the Knox, from the stairs to the urinals felt vintage and gothic.
We had the most AMAZING seats in the place. We sat right in church pew corner to the left, my back rested on the corner wall and front. At first we were a little worried because the left side of the stage was in front of us, but Kristian Matsson's animated way of performing and moving around the stage didn't relegate us to staring at the back of his head and his tight hipster jeans. Another plus was that the musician's backstage was right beside us and from the subtle movements of the swinging door, we can see Kristian kicking it back with a glass of wine. Check out some of the looser-iphone-app pics I took to see our vantage point!
I didn't manage to get a t-shirt or any swag after the concert. No worries, I scored a post-encore man-hug from The Tallest Man on Earth and like my tip suggested, I still am the happiest teenage girl on the planet.Listed in: BECAUSE I SAID SO!!

Knox United has to be one of the few amazing places to watch live music in our fair city, Calgary. And I mean amazing in an awe-struck, inspiring, spiritual experience kind of way. Of course it is a church, but it is more than that. To experience music in a room that has such incredible acoustics is an experience every Calgarian must have.
I have been to several concerts at Knox now and it has always been a perfect evening no matter where I sit, who is playing, and how much snow is outside. The staff at Knox are so kind and helpful and even though their washroom facilities are limited and old, you can't help but feel like a little kid again lining up and filling the hallways to get where you are going.
The architecture is absolutely breathtaking inside, I feel so grateful I get to hang out in a building like it to listen to some great music. -

Not only is the Knox United Church a church; it also offers facilities for social, business, education, culture, entertainment and sports.
The historic building, built in 1912 in Neo-gothic Arts & Crafts design, is one of Calgary's most well-known downtown landmarks. The sanctuary & concert hall is a neo-gothic arts and crafts design with a large choir loft and pipe organ. The sanctuary and concert hall may be used for organ, piano, orchestral or choral concerts and lectures and seats approximately 800 people.
Not only does the Knox have a gym, meeting rooms and boardrooms; they have a Restored period theatre and parlour and a meditation room with Labyrinth. The Knox has caterers, a prep kitchen, sound & audio-visual equipment, outdoor garden, and it even has high speed internet.
All this in the heart of downtown with the LRT and buses just outside their doorstep and most importantly wheel chair accessibility.
All in all the Knox church knocks it way out of the park. -

I've always been impressed with the style of this historic building and message of its church of believers. It appeals to a community of modern socially conscious individuals and still holds its sanctity as an important part of its heritage.
