Definitely the best salon service I've ever had. They squeezed me in on the day of and gave me the exact cut I brought a picture of. Kris was my stylist and she was really rad and down to earth. She gave me lots of tips and pointers about hair. We chatted about everything under the sun and for once I didn't feel like I wasn't "hip" enough to be in someone's salon chair.

All that plus a really nice head massage with the wash. AWESOMESAUCE!

Knotty Boy is described as a "full service salon specializing in Dreadlocks, Hair Extensions, and Extreme Cuts and Colours," which is true, but I say the emphasis should really be on "full service." While they're better known for the more adventuresome styles and specialty services, the stylists there are great at the traditional stuff, too. I fall somewhere in between: I like a fun haircut and admire those extreme looks on others, but I've always shied away from bright colours and high-maintenance cuts on my own head.

Becca has been cutting and colouring my hair for over five years - she just understands my weird wavy hair - and I followed her from elsewhere to Knotty Boy. Each of the stylists has a well-established clientele and I'm a procrastinator with a busy schedule, so sometimes Becca will be booked if I try to get in after work with less than a week's notice. When that happens, I have no reservations about booking with Kris if she's available; she also does a bang-up job. In fact, all of their stylists and staff are pleasant and funny people who contribute to the relaxed, fun and upbeat atmosphere of the salon. Whether I have a photo of my desired cut for the stylist, or just tell her, "go crazy," I always leave in a better mood than when I went in.

They are famous for their dreads and extensions, but I also highly recommend the Knotty Boy Lock Shop to anyone who's looking for a great cut and/or colour (extreme or traditional) and an all-around positive salon experience. There's no snobbery, no booming house music, and no minimalist white décor - just laughs, a laid back atmosphere and talented stylists.
