This place is fun.  The people who work here are very nice, and seem to encourage goofing around with the puppets.

I visited Granville Island many times before realizing what I was missing here.  The kits are my absolute favorite.  As a kid, I never had much luck with kites, and part of me is still wanting to get it right.  So, this spring I'm gonna do it- learn to successfully fly a kite.  This is the place where's I'm going to buy the perfect kite.

As the name of this colourful retail shop in Vancouver's glorious Granville Island suggests, this is your destination for all things kites and puppets.

Though it's not every day one needs to buy a kite or a puppet (though both items make fantastic, fun, creative, imaginative, playful, whimsical gifts for kids of all ages -- better than a video game, I say), if you ever wake up on a sunny and slightly windy Sunday morning and decide you absolutely need to go fly a kite, Kites and Puppets is the place you ought to head to immediately.

Because the store specializes in these two items, the selection is broad (broader than I could ever imagine a selection of kites to be), and runs the gamut from your basic diamond-shaped, one-string kite to truly complicated works of art that require skill and patience to fly expertly.

And once you get your kite, head down the sea wall and over to Vanier Park (site of the annual Children's Festival and Bard on the Beach) to fly it with fellow enthusiasts -- beginner and advanced alike.

Kites and Puppets wins my stamp of approval for two reasons:

First, they let you goof around with the puppets. Nothing is worse than a place that has fun items then looks down on people fiddling with them. Puppets are meant to be played with and this place understands. It's fun to bring kids here to play with them but even just with a gruop of adults they aren't giving me a stink eye whenever I pick up a puppet.

Also, it's just a fun store. Not that the kids mall is particularly dour  but I do feel like about 3/4 of the stores might be full of goods kids COULD like but their layout is boring. I can't imagine many younger kids getting that hyped on the clothing stores or even the magic store. But here you see ever kid walking in get totally psyched on the sheer amount of puppets and toys.

This store really shows the kind of fun all the places in the kids mall ought to.

Kites and Puppets might just be the most fun store on Granville Island. I make it a point to stop by here every time I visit Granville Island. They carry an amazing array of puppets from bald eagles and camels to Freud finger puppets. The puppets come at all price points and playing with them in store is free.
